Serial rs-232
I have Keithley 6514 and trying to get data over rs-232. If you have same Labview VIs which cab be can modified, please send it to me. This VI will help me to get current data taken. Thanks.
S. Saygi
I still having problem. I wrote my VI and it seems to me ok. Basically, when I run it after reset the instrument and the VI it gives me the word following.’’ KEITHLEY INSTRUMENTS INC.,MODEL 6514,0893334,A07 Nov 29 2000 11:08:20/A02 /? ’’. But in the second run ıt gives me the time error. Meaning that I can communicate with the instrument. How can I read the correct values from the buffer through the serial rs-232? I run the loopback.vi that having no problem.
In the VI, the read character is *IDN and termination is done by \r .Timeout value on VISA CONFIGURE SERİAL PORT is 500ms.
On the other hand my serial connection is done by HAND MADE cable that ıt has all pins go trougth like 1 to 1, 2 to 2 ....

Hi - I would like to build the logic in which it should accomodate the communication redundancy using serial RS-232 for Data Transfer b/w Host and RT irrespective of TCP/IP Data Transfer.
I want to do data transfer b/w host and RT through RS232 VISA portal whenever TCP/IP ethernet cable has been unplugged from the controller continuosly , it should keep on checking for TCP/IP link re-establishing also , when ever the tcp/ip link established again that time the communication should be using in that link only. This is accomplished by deploying the RT vi as execuatbale file. I made some logic regards to the above said logic , bur it was not working as much I expected.
I request you to go through the attached two VI's and let me know , what I did wrong in that,
Please do the needful.

Baud rate and parity are set correctly, RS-232 cable is also connected correctly. My QuickBasic program has no problems to read and write to the Multimeter. It is obviously a software problem: the same error is persistent if I disconnect RS-232 cable.
I downloaded NI-VISA 2.6 for Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP frorm digital.ni.com and installed it. But it did not help.
Thank you in advance

I have problems with the 34401A and serial communication. Do you remember
where the error was in the code ?
Thanks

Serial RS-232 Comunication in LABVIEW
I would like to know how to use the VISA blocks in LABVIEW 7.1 to perform a serial comunication using RS-232. I have a pH sensor that sends the pH level using the RS232 interface, how do I read this sensor with LABVIEW ?
What kind of ph-sensor are you using(manufacter)? Search on their homepage for LabView serial drivers
for the ph-sensor you are using, or earch for it on this website. If there are no Labview drivers
for this sensor you would need a programming handbook with all information about programming the
serial interface and write a LabView driver yourselve... better search for it first!

CAN I use the crio chassis serial rs-232 in the fpga interface?
Is it possible to talk directly to the serial interfaces on a cRIO chassis (like the RS-232 port on the 9074) from the FPGA interface, or is this resource only accessible from the RT environment?
Many thanks!
-Will BerstcheHi,
it is only accessible over RT.

BUILDING A SERIAL RS-232 TO GPIB CONVERTER
I am using an agilent hp-8648B signal generator and a hp-E4403B spectrum analyzer, both of them have a GPIB connector only.
I want to control them by the serial connection-so I need to build a VI to connect by the serail and I need hardware to convert from the serial connection to the GPIB.
Anybody have and idea how to do that? or reference to schematics of this circuit and software if needed?
Thanks
TzvielAnd may I inquire as to the serial number of your LabView software? After all it is cheaper to....
With all that high ticket Agilent equipment, a few hundred bucks for a GPIB card is a drop in the bit bucket.
Just my rant, but why expend all that time building someone else's design, doing PWA artwork, debugging, writing drivers, etc.

Can we replace an old serial board with a new one found available on your site?
So.. we are using Lookout 5.0 to operate a plant, and we have a PCI SERIAL RS 232/485 ISOLATED 2 PORTS board, with the code 185726C-02 printed on that board, which is used to comunicate with some solenoids modules. I search your site for a replacement for that board, and I found the PCI-8433/2 board which seems to be compatible. Question: is it ok to use this board instead the old one with Lookout 5 if we update the NI SERIAL drivers from your site?
Thanks in advance ..
Eddie ZackMake sure the site folder created by iWeb is named exactly the same as the site folder currently on the server.

Serial communication crashes with blue screen
Hello,
I have been troubleshooting an application that consistently kept crashing/hanging after ~1 to 5 minutes. I am communicating with a syringe pump NE1000 from New Era (http://www.syringepump.com). If have finally isolated the problem to a VISA write function.
Configuration:
· DELL INSPIRON running Win7 64 Bit
· LabVIEW 2011SP1
USB to Serial RS-232 Adapter [ GUC232A ] http://www.iogear.com/product/GUC232A/
· The driver for the GUC232A has just been updated to the latest version, but the same behavior was observed with the older driver dating back to 2009.
· RS232 to “telephone cable” adapter:
· Telephone cable to RS232 port on syringe pump
I was running the NI Desktop Execution Trace Kit while running the attached Test NE100X – Query Volume.vi. The log is attached, Trace Test NE100X - Query Volume vi (1_4_2013 _ 17_06_11_423180).ttd.
When I run the vi at a loop rate of 10ms, it hangs after 15889 events. (Occasionally, Win7 crashes with the Blue Screen of Death.) I did not find anything unusual in the trace report.
After the vi hangs, it becomes unresponsive. When I attempt to exit LabVIEW, I get the Resetting VI: … message, and LabVIEW is hanging and does not exit:
If I decrease the loop rate to 50 ms and 75 ms, the vi seems to be running longer, but still crashes after about 52000 events, or 25000 events, respectively. At a loop rate of 100ms, it is was running for 51 min and then I had another Blue Screen Windows crash.
What confuses me is that the system just hangs without giving me any timeout or error message. This makes the troubleshooting very difficult. A query rate of 10 Hz seems to be rather low. I wonder whether this is a hardware issue or some bug in the software. I appreciate your help in troubleshooting this issue. Thank you.

Tech Support Inquiry.zip 781 KBHi
I can see several potential problems with this code. It looks as though what you are trying to do is to send a "DIS" command to the syringe pump and are then trying to read the data that the syringe pump sends back in response to this command.
1. How many bytes are you expecting to get back in response to the DIS command? You're attempting to read 1024 bytes. If you really are expecting 1024 bytes then you need to calculate how long that would take to arrive. If we assume that you're using a data word consisting of 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity then the number of bytes you will receive per second = 19200 / (8 + 1) = 2133. Therefore 1024 bytes will take 1024/2133 seconds = 0.48 sec. Therefore there is no point having a loop rate of 10msec. 0.5 seconds would be better.
2. You haven't included the vi that initialises the serial comms so I can't see what timeout value you've assigned. You need to check that it is greater than the time it's going to take for your data to arrive.
3. If you're not expecting exactly 1024 bytes then you need a different strategy for reading back the data. Possible options are i) counting exactly how many bytes you actually do get and using that number in the byte count input, ii)reading data continuously in a small loop until a terminating character is seen. eg if a CRLF is returned at the end of the data, read continuously until you see this. I've attached a modified version of your vi that shows how to implement this last method.

Bluetooth/USB RS-232 converter recommendation
Hi,
As laptops haven't come with a serial (RS-232) port for a long time, would anyone have recommendations on what to use (Manufacturer, model, etc.) to do that? I need to connect to various routers, switches, servers, etc. with 9600 8N1 and the Bluetooth or USB device needs to be able to pass the BREAK signal correctly but those are pretty much my only requirements.
Also, do people use kermit or something else (zterm? is there an universal binary?) on OSX as their serial communications program? Googling didn't really help this time.
Thanks
Kaj
MacBook Pro 2 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.6)Hi, Kaj —
and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your serial-device-related needs are outside my experience, but I may be able to help get you started with Bluetooth-related resources beyond Googling. From your query, I presume that you are aware that "Apple Bluetooth software lets you add virtual serial ports to your computer to enable incoming and outgoing connections with Bluetooth devices."...?
Links to Bluetooth-related resources.
First, here are results from a < serial RS-232 > search within Bluetooth.com — the "Official Bluetooth® website". Bluetooth.org —home of the Bluetooth® SIG (Special Interest Group of lead companies developing the open-source specifications) has lists of products and organizations, and may also be worth a look. Various technical associations such as PaloWireless Bluetooth Resource Center and Bluetooth White Papers also provide access to a lot of Bluetooth-related info. Sorry — I don't have time right now to help with the search, but my guess is that your efforts with one or more of these links will prove fruitful. [1]
Another resource you may want to bookmark and keep up with is MacInTouch's Universal Binaries and Intel-Native Mac Applications listing...
I hope this helps to get you headed toward answers — at least until someone with this specific expertise "drops by" your thread...

Dean

How to access serial port using servlet
I want to communicate with a microcontroller connected to the serial port of my computer.
*I am using the following:
Windows 98 operating system
Tomcat web server 4.1
*The directory structure is as given:
Tomcat 4.1/webapps/myjsp/web-inf/classes/remoteservlets.
I have placed my jsp files in my jsp folder and classfiles in remote servlets folder.
**my java program has compiled correctly.**
** my simple java application which accesses the serial port works fine.***
*when I start tomcat I am able to access the sevlet as the servlet responds with the button name i have pressed.
**** I have also tried the following
Copied file comm.jar in <JAVA_HOME>\jre\lib\ext
Copied file javax.comm.properties in <JAVA_HOME>\jre\lib
Copied file win32com.dll in <JAVA_HOME>\lib and also in c:\windows\system32 and c:\windows\system
***************which helped me do away with errors.
still I don't get any output. I dont get any errors either.
PLEASE HELP. URGENT. i am at my wits end.
Thank you.Servlet is the one which runs in the server side...if u want to comunicate with the serial port of the server in which ur servlet is running can be done but making use of Communication api available....
U can download the Api from http://java.sun.com/products/javacomm/index.jsp
There are three levels of classes in the Java communications API:
High-level classes like CommPortIdentifier and CommPort manage access and ownership of communication ports.
Low-level classes like SerialPort and ParallelPort provide an interface to physical communications ports. The current release of the Java communications API enables access to serial (RS-232) and parallel (IEEE 1284) ports.
Driver-level classes provide an interface between the low-level classes and the underlying operating system. Driver-level classes are part of the implementation but not the Java communications API. They should not be used by application programmers.

ROSA element manager enquiry ( connection using RS 232 interface )
Hi , I'm RF transmission engineer working in broadcast station .
Our broadcast transmitters have only serial RS 232 interfaces .
We have ROSA element maanger unit in our site so i need to connect the broadcast transmitters to the ROSA element manager .
How can i do that ?
After finishing all installation is it possible to communicate with the broadcast equipements using web browser from our LAN ?It would appear that if the ROSA supports your type of equipment then it would allow you to manage or at least monitor the device using a web browser.
This would mean that the ROSA hes a very good knowledge of how your equipment works and what questions or instructions it can give via the serial connection.
I have a very limited trust in general of this sort of equipment. Make sure you exact devicetype has support from cisco with its current software.
Cheers,

Serial VISA - without installing all drivers
Dear friends, I want to build my serial (RS-232) application with serial VISA but I do not want to install the softaware VISA, because then I would have all the files resulting after an installation of VISA, because I need to run my app. in a PC where LabVIEW is not installed. Also I do no like to install NI MAX.
Regards:
KikeAnswered here. If you want to develop with VISA, there is no choice except to install the VISA run-time. The serial only run-time is much smaller than the full VISA or run-time.

RT DLL general protection fault associated with serial I/O
Hello,
I'm experiencing Generatl Protection Faults on my real-time PC running LabView Real Time 9.1.0. The faults occur when oppening/reading/writing from a serial rs-232/422 port, regardless of whether I use the Serial library or VISA library.
How do I debug this? Is there a stack dump stored somewhere on the RT system when a fault occurs?
I am using LabWindows/CVI 2009 with the corresponding RT module to do my development.
Regards,
ndoMichael,
I was able to get a report of the crash just as the KB instructed.
(Although no report was generated when I ran my DLL in debug mode, the report was only generated when I deployed the DLL to the RT system and a crash occurred. )
I've attached the report here, can you tell me why it's crashing?
Regards,
ndo
