Serious CPU usage problem

Hi everyone,
I used to have my own kernel running and everything was fine.
Recently, after the cool changes which happend with kernel/udev related stuff in the last months and weeks, and with the "beyond" kernel being available and having the possibility to use software suspend2 an easy way,  I thought it would perhaps be better to switch to the beyond kernel package, staying up to date easily and not having to care about wether some update perhaps wouldn't work with my old kernel anymore...
After some minor hassle, I got it working fine and thought, well, runs reasonably well. But then I discovered some strange issues:
* If I boot with the regular kernel, log in to the console, use mplayer to play an mp3/ogg file, I got 22% cpu usage by mplayer, and additional system cpu usage, summing up to only 66% of my cpu is in idle state!
* If I do the same thing with the beyond kernel, it is still around 7 to 8 %, the CPU has a maximum of 87% idle time
* If I start up X and start xmms, without playing anything, even with stock configuration and nothing changed/enabled, xmms will take 12% of my CPU!
* If I run some other things aside (like mplayer), xmms - still being idle! - still uses 4% CPU
* if I actually use xmms, it takes up to 20% cpu
* now mplayer only uses 2% CPU - but still too much for only playing a music file
So I just don't have anything left than scratching my head. What's going on there?

XMMS doesn't play nice with today's Linux scheduler.  It's old.  (I still use XMMS -- out of sheer habit -- and ignore the problem.)

  • Btrfs + luks cause serious CPU usage

    I often tried to forget about this, but in a time I use a external disk with btrfs.
    bus as soon as I mount the disk via luks mapper device, I get serious CPU usage by kthreads. It goes that far that even typing into pidgin gets lagged/delayed.
    Does anybody else have this kind of issue? An internal disk has the verysame effect. Tested copies with these combinations: ext4→btrfs; btrfs→btrfs; btrfs→ext4
    Thank you!
    Appendix:
    Phenom 9500 4x 2.2

    so the system should be pretty much capable of anything :>

    I use pretty much the same options as you:
    $ grep backup /etc/fstab
    /dev/mapper/backup /mnt/backup btrfs defaults,noauto 0 0
    I use the standard kernel from testing which is 2.6.39 though I have not seen this behavior on any previous kernel either.
    If you don't use an indexer and something like iotop shows no activity I'm not sure what to try next. If you have hourly backups in place how many snapshots are there present on the volume? Are they being rotated or just building up? Could btrfs be doing some sort of rebalance (seems unlikely on a single disk pool)? Probably not being much help sorry.

  • 10.1.3 memory/CPU usage problems

    I recently migrated from JDev 9.0.5.2 to 10.1.3.0.4 and impressed with the new features and functionality.
    However I've noticed the interface seems significantly slower (eg. code insight and simply inserting a new line of code is much slower), and the memory footprint seems to continually grow. Seeing it at >300M is not unusual.
    There are also times when JDev seems to simply hang, and when I look a the JDev process in WinXP, the memory usage grows seemingly out of control as well as gobbling CPU cycles. My only option to kill the process. I'm using a 2.6G Pentium, 1G RAM, WinXP Prof and JDK 1.5.0_05.
    Are there known problems with JDev's memory/CPU usage, or known options I can turn off to improve performance?
    TIA

    I don't have the memory monitor extension and have turned off all non-essential extensions but still see the memory-growth problem.
    One odd thing I noticed is the JDev process on WinXP grows by 2-3MB each time a breakpoint is hit. I verified that same behavior doesn't exist in JDev 9.0.5.2 for the same project, and happens no matter which J2SE I select for the 10.1.3 project (JDK 1.4 or 1.5) or which runtime VM (hotspot or ojvm).

  • MSI KT6 Delta LSR SATA to PATA High CPU Usage Problem

    Well recently I've switch to my one of my other motherboards on my network to a MSI KT6 Delta LSR, it was working fine after a reformat, but I notice a few problems and that is 100% cpu usage for SATA to PATA, and vice versa, which seems really crazy. Then my network card performance is ISDN speed sluggish, and I tested my line to be working 100% with another mobo. But when I put another NIC on the same mobo it suffers the same speed problems.
    Any suggestions? The rig is specs:
    Barton 2500+
    Antec QuietPower 350W
    200GB Seagate SATA HDD
    40GB Seagate PATA HDD
    ATI Radeon 7500 AIW
    Audigy 2 Value
    Realtek 8139 NIC
    MSI KT6 Delta LSR Mobo
    2x512 MB PC 2700 RAM
    Pioneer 107D DVD Writer
    LG 16X DVD-ROM
    56K Modem (A-open)

    Shouldn't say what I don't know about SATA, but since I found below, I need ask if VIA 4in1 drivers are installed, preferably while in SafeMode I say:
    http://www.google.se/search?q=cache:X6ewgPiIHYcJ:www.qdi.nl/cgi-bin/bbs/YaBB.pl%3Fboard%3DP4I865%3Baction%3Ddisplay%3Bnum%3D1074174096+sata+to+pata+cpu+usage&hl=sv
    I recently installed 160g Seagate barracuda 7200.7 drive on SATA port. (I enabled the Bios using Auto) I have a P4I865pea-6al mother board, with two PATA drives . When copying files between the PATA drives on ide ports, to or from, the SATA drive, I notice the CPU usage goes up to 100%, but when copying files from one ide drive (the PATA drives) to another the CPU usage is very low.
    Is there a bios setting that will allow me to copy files from the SATA drive to the Pata drives using a small amount of CPU power, found when just copying between the Primary and Secondary IDE drives? I am using Adobe premiere pro, which uses a lot of CPU power, and the high CPU usage of the SATA drive crashes this program? Any help would be appreciated

    have you installed the newest chipset- and ide drivers ?

  • FMS 4 configuration / High CPU usage problem

    I am seeing extremly high CPU usage issues with the FMS 4 server.  It seems to be a problem with the FMS Edge process?  If you start and stop the service, the processor goes back to normal operations.
    Looking in the Windows Event logs I am seeing these errors:

    Hi
    Can you please provide us some little more environment information on this issue, like:
      - what were you trying to do when you saw this issue, if there was a live telecast or if that was a simple vod workflow?
    - What publisher application were you using to send livestream to FMS?
    -  were you also doing some kind of recording while doing live streaming??
    - In case of live streaming what audio/video encoding and bitrates was there in use?
    - how many number of connections were there?
    - What amount of cpu and mem usage was there (when you say very high cpu usage).. you can see it using task manager
    It will help if you can also share your fms logs (inside fms_install_folder/logs) so that we can see if something abnormal was going on there..

  • Flash Player High CPU Usage problem

    When I used Flash Player on Windows XP, it used 50-80% CPU Usage so my browser was really laggy but when I used Flash Player on Windows 7, it only used 10-20% CPU Usage... It happened when I load same content on a website.and on same PC (I'm a dual boot user), so I think it's not computer specification problem..
    Could someone help me? Thanks in advance.

    First go to http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ and check that both XP and Vista have the same version of Flash installed. Then check that both have the same video driver version as a more recent driver may mean more hardware acceleration is supported.

  • Q180 High CPU Usage Problem

    My new Q180 is showing CPU usage of at least 40% all the time in the Windows 7 Task Manager. Sysinternals Process Explorer show that this is due to over 25% of Hardware Interrupts happening all the time.
    Is anyone else seeing this kind of problem / symptoms?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I was able to locate and fix the problem yesterday. The problem was in the Realtek ethernet drivers. I disabled the device from the control panel and interrupts went a way. After that I removed the existing driver and re-installed with the one available on Lenovo support site and now interrupts are gone and CPU utilization is 0% when the computer is not doing anything.

  • MSI FX5500 128Mb 100%CPU usage problem

    Hi,
    i have a LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb mobo and a Atlhon 64 1800+ 512ddr and a MSI FX5500 128Mb with Windows XP SP2, and i'm having too much cpu usage(between 70/100%)..the strange part of this is that i'm having this huge cpu usage when system is at desktop without anything runing (programs..games..).. and no.. its no virus/adware/spyware.. because i've format my system and only install windows and mobo drivers(nf3 drivers) and ofcourse nvidia Display drivers nothing else..
    if anyone could help me i appreciate because this slows down my computer a little bit.. :S

    its weird..because in task manager in processes separator, there is no process using too much cpu, but in performance separator it shows CPU between 70/100% of usage.. i will try to post a screenshot soon as i can to show to you..
    btw.. could this be solved or its my graphic card damaged?
    tks

  • CPU Usage problem

    I recently acquired another computer. I installed jdev 10-1.2 on the new machine
    using a cd, and then copied my java files from the old machine to the new one.
    I opened the project file with jdev and compiled and ran it.
    The performance is very slow.(I'm using Windows-XP)
    When I check out the Windows Task Manager, I see that the CPU Usage is at 100%. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?
    Thanks-G.

    O.K. Here is another dump...it looks slightly different but it's hard to watch for spikes when the thing is steady at 100% ( no spikes )

  • Plugin-container / Flash Player CPU Usage Problem

    Watching Twitch.tv stream and I am constantly having problems where my CPU locks up at 100%.
    Was using chrome with this problem also. Was hoping the switch to Firefox would resolve it.
    Windows 7
    8GB RAM
    Phenom II X4 3Ghz processor

    Hello and quiet the cause of this problem is momentary launched firefox version is a Beta test and this problem is hovering lately in our Pc `S.te suggest you're frequently updated on our firefox.Te DepNet.com for the promise that this next vercion will be better with all their efficiencies.

    2.-In when you leave the vercion but suffers of firefox installed.

  • Firefox 21 CPU usage problems

    I made the stupid mistake of allowing Firefox 21 to install and now must be a guinea pig or part of your User Acceptance Testing, well I don't accept.
    Since upgrading there is a pattern, Firefox loads and starts to work OK at first, then after several tabs are open and for no apparent reason it starts using a constant 25% of CPU, at the same time no websites work properly, even Google takes 15 seconds to load.
    So I terminate the service and reload Firefox, it then starts to work OK for a while but soon starts the same behaviour all over again. No particular site seems to be responsible and it happens over and over.
    I also noticed that the memory seems to keep increasing even if I am not loading any new sites or even if I have Firefox in the background.
    I am not going to re-install, I lost thousands of structured bookmarks last time that happened.
    Why can't you just release software that works.
    None of my plugins seem to have any problem, it seems to just be Firefox.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?

    This is also a problem on Firefox 23. CPU reaches 100% on starting Firefox and when opening a number of tabs, or just a few or one or two. Firefox then locks up and it is impossible to scroll, open or close tabs/windows while CPU is at 100%.
    Firefox do not seem to acknowledge that there is a problem here. This started around version 19 and has been getting worse with each subsequent version. Is it simply that Firefox is becoming more resource hungry with each iteration?

  • [AfterUpdate] Psi unresponsiveness and high CPU usage problem

    Hi there
    I tried to look for a solution of my problem on the web but apparently can't find anything on the topic.
    I have just upgraded system via powerpill -Syu
    What was upgraded is:

    [2009-03-13 16:28] starting full system upgrade

    [2009-03-13 16:34] starting full system upgrade

    [2009-03-13 16:35] upgraded dhcpcd (4.0.10-1 -> 4.0.12-1)
    [2009-03-13 16:35] upgraded qt (4.4.3-5 -> 4.5.0-3)
    [2009-03-13 16:35] upgraded soprano (2.2.2-1 -> 2.2.3-1)
    [2009-03-13 16:36] upgraded kdelibs (4.2.1-1 -> 4.2.1-3)
    [2009-03-13 16:36] upgraded kdebase (4.2.1-1 -> 4.2.1-2)
    [2009-03-13 16:36] upgraded kdepim (4.2.1-1 -> 4.2.1-2)
    [2009-03-13 16:36] upgraded kdeplasma-addons (4.2.1-1 -> 4.2.1-2)
    [2009-03-13 16:36] upgraded moonlight (1.0-3 -> 1.0.1-3)
    [2009-03-13 16:36] upgraded pam (1.0.3-1 -> 1.0.4-1)
    [2009-03-13 16:36] upgraded qtcurve-gtk2 (0.61.5-1 -> 0.62.2-1)
    [2009-03-13 16:36] upgraded qtcurve-kde4 (0.61.4-1 -> 0.62.2-1)
    [2009-03-13 16:36] upgraded system-config-printer (1.1.3-1 -> 1.1.5-1)
    [2009-03-13 16:36] upgraded util-linux-ng (2.14-1 -> 2.14.2-1)
    After the upgrade everything seemed to be fine, but just when I try to write to anyone in the chat window of psi, processor usage increases up to about 97% and psi becomes dead. It doesn't react to anything but SIGKILL.
    I am using psi-git form AUR.
    I have tried to rebuild the package but it didn't work. So for the moment I had to temporarily switch to psi from extra repo. Nevertheless it would be nice if I still could use git version.
    Has anyone encountered similar problems?  Does anyone know which package is responsible for this strange behaviour? Is it psi itself (I doubt it because before update it was working well and it wasn't updated) or some kde lib?
    Greetingz

  • Applet CPU usage problem

    Hi All,
    I have a tcp/ip listener that is running in a thread that is munching 100% of cpu. I wait for data in an endless loop but in a thread this can't take 100% cpu...or can it?

    If you check for data all the time, it can. If you tell the Thread to sleep for while between each check you'll use less resources.

  • CPU usage problems...

    hey, all of a sudden i seem to ahve an issue wiht loads. while doing nothing the laods 'idle' from 50-80% per core... this is doing nothing, and makign sure there's nothign runing in teh backgroudn that shouldnt be.
    as i t pe this its at 2ghz, and a high load.. any one have any ideas what could be doign this.. its out of the blue, restarted, and its stil doign it.. its fine for a few min then all of a sudden (after the eboot) it starts to go up...
    thanks:(

    hey thanks for hte quick repley!
    well, at first when i got the mbp i did all the updates... as soon as i rebooted after the 003 security update it started to do it. after a few hours i gave up and wipped the system and reinstall (not archive, compelte reinstall). it was fine until today, 2 or so days. i was out getting some dinner when i came back to notice it was at extremly high loads again (and runign hotter obviosuly), espcially for being at idle...
    nothing had been installed or anything changed from when i went to eat and came back. it was fine for 2 days, then all of a sudden it started again. i've tried killing the startup items, checking processes and killing everything that isn't essential to the system.. nothing will fix it at all. as im typing this both cores are jumping 50-75%, theres nothing else even runing other then firefox andno weird processes either:(
    just got off with apple and they said it sounds like a hardware problem.. though i'll try my best to resolve it before monday morning so i don't lose my machine for days while they are trying to pin point it being serviced.
    thx for the help
    james
    Oh yea, it was ordered through apple.ca, i'm guessing for a replacement i have to send them it back, wait forever, then theyll send the replacement, so i get screwed out of a machine i paid 2500$ for 2 weeks hu? as if th

    Hello Laura&Graeme, Welcome to Discussions.
    First off great job with what you have done. I have some suggestions below. One which you have done but want to ensure you know the full list of apple programs that may actually be in your system. So you can remove them all. Below is the first link to assist you as well as a text list of those Apps.
