Serious Finder Issues

I have been having continued problems with my Finder that are beyond anything I've experienced. I have already re-installed the OS and they continue to get worse. Here is what happening:
- Application databases are becoming corrupt. For example, the iTunes database became corrupted requiring me to rebuild it and losing all my movies, playlists, and rules.
- After about an hours worth of usage, the Dock will no longer work. I will click on an application and it will not launch or will not come to the top of the window. Basically, the dock does not respond to any of my selections. (I also cannot force quit an application from within the dock either.)
- About the time the Dock goes, it becomes difficult to switch to another application by using the command-tab keystroke. Often times the application I am switching from remains the prominent application. Also, if I have Entourage open, I can no longer quit that application.
- Force quiting an application becomes impossible. The Force Quit window opens but clicking on an application and clicking the Force Quit button yields no results. There is not even any registration of my mouse clicking on the button. It is as if they mouse had no effect on the button (keyboard strokes don't work either.)
- Once all the above starts to happen, shutting down no longer works. The shutdown window appears but clicking on the shutdown or hitting Return does not shut down the computer. Even after it counts down to "zero" to force an automatic shutdown, the computer doesn't. I have to manually hold down the power key to shut down the computer.
- It is important to note that after I restart the computer, all the problems above do not occur. This only happens after about an hour has passed.
As I said, I have already re-installed the OS after similar problems started to appear. The re-install fixed those but now new ones are cropping up. Before I go through the enormous hassle of wiping the hard drive clean and installing a brand new OS (without transferring my user data) I thought I would see if anyone has any ideas as to what I can do to fix this. And, yes, I have already run the Disk Utility program and repaired my permissions, etc.

I'm a tech specialist in an office of 20 workers, In the last two days I've seen 3 Intel Macs (1 MB and 2 MBP's) Have very similar issues as BayArea MacFan. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but what usually happens with our machines is when some one is working in Office 2004 apps and then they want to switch to another open app like safari or firefox it won't go it's everything is frozen but MS office.
In my experience with MS products, it's usally the other way around. My staff members can save their word doc or ppt file then they have to do a hard shut down and reboot.
I sort of remedied part of the problem by going into ONYX and switching on the feature that allows you to have a quit option in the finder menu. This work on one of the systems yesterday.
I think it may be and conflict/issue with Rosetta and the finder. We are running 10.4.9 on all of the machines.

Serious UI issues in SQL Developer 4.0 for Mac

I've encountered some serious UI issues in SQL Developer 4.0 for Mac (4.0.0.13) that impact it up to the point where it becomes unusable.
If the database and tables are expanded in the "Connections" view, sometimes a node in the tree seems to become sticky. Whenever you scroll the up or down, it will immediately scroll back to make the old selection visible again. If you want to work with an item that's outside the current view (e.g. to collapse the "Tables" node), you can no longer use it. SQL Developer needs to be restarted.
If the context menu is opened (ctrl click), it appears in the wrong place. It's too far to the right and bottom. If you then move the mouse pointer towards the menu, a rectangle appears and follows the mouse pointer as if you had initiated a drag and drop operation.
If the "Data" tab of a table is selected and if a cell is clicked to edit the cell value, the text cursor is drawn in the wrong position. It can be off by more than one character and it is often drawn in the middle of a character instead of between two characters. It's hardly possible to edit the cell value as you cannot tell for sure where insertions and deletions will happen. You basically need to copy the value into a separate editor, edit it there and copy it back.
The scrolling in the "Data" tab of a table is a pain. For no obvious reason, it first scrolls downwards a few rows and then jumps to the top (at least using a Magic Mouse). If all rows have been loaded, this problem seems to disappear. But generally, the scrolling distance is far too short. With a long finger swipe, one would expect to scroll the contents by several pages. However, it only scrolls about half a page. For shorter swipes, it's similar. It sometimes only scrolls by a few pixels.
Am I the only one to experience these severe problems? Or is the Mac version not as mature as the Windows version yet?

In terms of diagnosis, perhaps not -- probably very time-consuming to debug. I did find some unpublished bugs against dual monitor use ...

The first turned out to be an issue in the 64-bit Java AWT libraries, not the 32-bit libraries, and specifically for Windows 7 as opposed to, say XP, but this was all quite a bit in the past and was fixed for 4.0. The second one (on 64-bit Linux), however, just came in yesterday, so you can wait to see if a fix for that also covers your situation or, if you are able, pursue it directly with Oracle Support.

Serious battery issues, apple support waste of time and money!

My Mac Book Pro 17" has a serious battery issue it holds a charge for a hour or less, and does not always charge. Telephone apple support and all they say is take it to one of there shops to get it tested that will cost me about £40 in train fare and take a day at least. Ive had the Mac since September 2011 i never started using it until late December 2011. A 3 year warranty for what!!!!! And it overheats..... Apple good bye your becoming worse the Microsoft your just making money out of constant yearly updates/releases of your products, Updates which becoming boring!

The thing is you pay for a warranty and unless you live close to a Authrorised test centre etc, then it cost you more in time and money for travel!
I'm really not clear on what you're asking Apple to do. You don't have to go to an Apple store, you can go to any Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). Your warranty is still completely valid. You can find them here:

The title of your thread says Apple support is a waste of time and money. What would have preferred that they do? If you are too far from an Apple store or AASP, you can let them know that and they will usually send you out a box so you can ship your machine back to them so they can check it out. Of course you'll be completely without your machine during that time.
You're comment contains quite a bit of bashing for something which Apple will clearly resolve. Unfortunately, if you live in a remote area where there are no Apple stores or AASPs and you dont' want to send it in, there isn't anything anyone can do to help you.

Serious resolution issues with After Effects CC (2014) on Windows 8.1 Pro on Dell Precision M3800 laptop??

My new company installed Adobe Creative Cloud (There was some annoying Proxy issues at first, because of the seriously tight I.T policies) but we are having some serious resolution issues with After Effects CC 2014 (also have this resolution problem with Adobe Premiere, Media Encoder, Muse) on Windows 8.1 Pro on a Dell Precision M3800 laptop with icons and interface looking too small and hard to see, is there a fix, an update or a work around, can anyone help?
Any help will be appreciated!

Hi Todd is there a time-frame for this fix, there is a lot of pressure on me, because I convinced my company to get the Creative Cloud and quite a lot of the CC software is not compatible with the latest Windows 8.1 OS.
Is there at least a work around, until this big fix comes along?

Finder issues and Get Info refusing to show the number of files on items on the main hard drive.

I am having finder issues. Mostly on the main hard drive. It takes ages to find things and I get the spinning wheel every time I open a folder.
So I moved all of my files to a external drive. When I had finished transfering I hit get info on the files on the external drive and on the same folder on the main drive. To ensure that it has copied over all the files. Because it was acting up and not copying all the files.
Get Info refuses to show the number of files within the folders on the main hard drive. It hasppily tells me everything on any of the external drives.
I have reset, the imac. I have re indexed 3 times. I have deleted the finder plist files. I have reset finder using terminal commands. I have moved nearly everything off the main hard drive. But nothing is working.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what could be causing my finder and get info issues.
Any help wpuld be appreciated.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Back up all data.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):

The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.

Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

Finder Issue

After iMac (10.6.8) has been running for a few hours, sometimes less than that Garageband and iTunes won't open.
I have been keeping track of different scenarios when this happens and every time it happens I have noticed that the Finder won't allow me to save any file to the HD or the external drive because the item could not be found.
It will allow me to save files to the Desktop however.
I have no idea if Garageband and iTunes and the Finder acting up are related but just putting it out there.
When I click on any location via the side bar icons all I get is the respective icon appearing and .
However, when I click on the Devices icon in the sidebar I can path my way to my user and it allows me to save it anywhere I want.
Rebooting only fixes these issues temporarily. I have run Disk Utilty from the Start Up Disc as well and everything came back with no problems found.
Also I am having to Force Quit all Apple based programs such as iWork 08 during this period of the Finder Issue and I cannot access the About This Mac function.
I can however activate the Software Updater.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Robert!
It sounds like there may be some sort of an issue in your operating system causing this to happen. You will probably want to create a Time Machine backup of your computer and reinstall the operating system to see if that affects the issue. Finder issue with Spaces

I found a Finder issue when using spaces. I performed an upgrade installation on my Intel Core Duo iMac. Finder worked as expected. Then, I turned on Spaces. After a few minutes the finder hung. I tried using activity monitor several times to force quit it. Finder quit, then relaunched and hung. Then, I turned off Spaces and the Finder stopped hanging and functioned as expected. I turned Spaces back on, and the Finder is still working currently. I am not sure if this bug will reproduce itself at this point.

Turns out I was having the same two problems as the original poster. It also turns out the solution to his first problem, which he outlined in the third post, happened to solve both problems on my machine.
In your Spaces prefs (Expose & Spaces in the System Preferences), make sure "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application" is checked!
Seems to have worked for me!
Here's hoping this solution helps others with the same problem. =)

Finder Issue with Alphabetizing

Hi everybody,
I'm having an issue after installing Lion in that Cover Flow/List/Icon in Finder is not alphabetizing (yet every other option is). Does any body know how to fix this? I've made sure that English is the correct text/language, but nothing else has changed.

I've had similar issues recently. I saw them first on an SMB share. Here are slightly different steps for repro:
All in the Finder:
* On a network share, create a new folder, e.g., "test"
* Within "test", create two new folders, "test1" and "test2", renaming them as you create them
* Select the "test1" directory you just created
Result:
* After selecting "test1", it visually changes to "test2" such that there are two "test2"'s listed there
* After a short delay, the display is rendered correctly, showing "test1" and "test2", but "test2" is now selected.
* If you select "test1" again it then displays as "test2" (i.e. two "test2"'s) and "test1" from there on out is inaccessible
Note that "ls" from the terminal shows these correctly; this is a Finder issue.
Unmounting and remounting the share fixes the problem.
This also happens on a USB card reader. It does not happen on the internal drive, nor on a PPC Mac running 10.4.9.

Two FINDER issues

taking a stab at trying to solve two finder issues.
1. is it possible to keep finder from automatically sorting a re-named folder or file when i am in the middle of re-organizing things? say to wait until i have actively clicked a sort button or otherwise clicked out of the finder view? i am always running around trying to find a re-named file or folder in a list of one hundred files when all i really want to do is rename some things and then move them. having this newly named entity automatically do the skeedaddle out of my view in the finder window is a real pita.
2. is there a realiable method that will let folders sort alphabetically with folders and files to sort alphabetically with files? i find it very annoying to have all this mixed up together when i will look for a file with files and for a folder with folders. i tried some terminal editing based upon a posted url that described a solution to this at one point but it does not appear to have taken.

SERIOUS lag issues with Intel iMac

Hello everyone,
I'm pretty frustrated right now. I've been having this serious lag issue with my new iMac for the past few days. I think it may have started after I ran the last security update.
What happens:
When switching between apps, the system will hang for 1-3 seconds between doing anything. This includes typing, mouse requests, etc. It's VERY frustrating. I have activity monitor open currently, and I am seeing both Safari and SystemUIServer hogging up the CPU resources like CRAZY. I've even seen Safari recently give a CPU usage of 120%, right before I loaded this webpage. tis isn't just centralized to Safari too.... I have the following apps running:
Adium 0.89.1
FoireFox 1.5.0.8
Safari
Activity Monitor
My Memory stats currently are:
175MB Wired
708MB Active
618MB Inactive
1.47GB Used
There should be no reason I'm getting these lags with just two web browsers and a chat client open.
Has anyone else expierenced the lags?? Any suggestions? I'm almost ready to reinstall OS X and not run the last security update. Thanks

I would manually run this script from The X Lab, and my load times would improve greatly. The problem was, I would forget to run them untill I noticed web pages loading slow or iTunes and iPhoto taking for ever. It wasn't untill someone here in discussions suggested Anacron that I saw the light. WOW what a difference Anacron has been making in my overall system speed. My iMac has not been shutdown for 11days 5hrs 34mins (sleep or use only) and opening new App's, switching App's and web pages load as fast or faster than after a fresh start up. If your system is operating properly and you are having only what seems to be a slow or sluggish issue Anacron will make a difference.

Can someone please advise what I need to do to correct this critical error?
My computer is VERY slow and when I ran the event viewer, this is listed as CRITICAL. Any information would be appreciated.

I do get the same problem. It believe it started after I switched from HDD to SSD some month's ago. My machine is very fast now so I do not have performance problems (only a very slow power on boot).
The description above is exactly the same as I have.

For All Serious Burning Issues!!

If you are having serious burning issues and error messages, and after you have freed up atleast 5 gb of HD space on your STARTUP drive (Startup is the drive that your OS is running on) then go to:

and download the appropriate Superdrive firmware for your computer. i have used this site several times. Make sure you follow the directions. This is a major change to the software that runs inside of your superdrive, but it usually does the trick for me when I have issues. If you have previously updated your firmware, and are now having issues, go back to the original firmware and see if that works, (it usually does for me). I have updated several times, and never had any issues. My superdrive is atleast 2 and a half years old with heavy use.
Not sure if Apple approves of doing this, but they don't seem to ever be very helpful with error messages, so this is the best solution for me.

Not really. You only need enough space to cover the amount of data being burned to the disc, which in most cases is 4.7 gb. You will need more if you are burning larger dvd's and/or dual layer. For years, I have only kept roughly 5 gb available on my system and haven't had any problems.
