Serious OS 10.4 Issue

Hi, I'm having some issues with my old Powermac G5 1.6 GHz model. It's used mainly as a W.A.P. so it's basically a host CPU. It is rarely used except for when I update it or am just checking something on the net real quick. Lately, it has been VERY slow. I tried restarting it today and it wouldn't get past the grey screen with the Apple logo. I turned it off, reset the SMU and tried again. Nothing happened. I then decided to go ahead and verify/repair the HD.
I booted up from the OS 10.4 DVD and checked out the disk. There were some issues with it when I went to verify. I can't remember them exactly, but it said it needed repairing. I went ahead and did that. After it finished, I tried installing the OS. When I walked back to my CPU after about 45 or so minutes, it said there was an error and that it could not install OS X. I clicked restart and the CPU froze. Obviously, now, when I try to start up the CPU, the Finder complains that there is no system.
So, I went ahead and booted from the DVD again. This time, I tried erasing the entire disk. It wouldn't let me erase it via Mac OS Extended (Journaled). However, I could erase it via Mac OS Extended. I erased it and tried installing it again. The DVD said that it could not install it as the HD was not suitable. I tried erasing it again with the Journaled setting and it says it cannot mount the HD.
I went ahead and turned the CPU off, then unplugged it from the back. I waited about 5 minutes and tried again. It still won't let me erase the HD, the system says it's not mounted and I have the following issues when I went to verify:
Invalid B-Tree node size
It's urging me that it should be repaired. However, when I try to repair it, it says:
Error - The Underlying Task Reported Failure On Exit
I think the HD is fried, but I don't have any other Serial ATA HD to test it with. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello! If the "zero all data" erasure gives you input/output errors it means the drive is pretty much fried as it can't read/write to the sectors reliably enough to lock out bad sectors. You're probably going to better off replacing it than messing with it any further. Tom

(Clearly i'm not alone in this problem, although i think i figured out what's going wrong a little more than he did...read on!)
his solution, to put mainstage in jump mode, is very unsatisfactory to me, as it bounces all of a sudden to drastically different settings.
basically, my analysis is that my controller is NOT receiving MIDI date from mainstage. in other words, mainstage knows what my controller is doing, but my controller doens't know what mainstage is doing.
let's say i turn the knob all the way to the right ... 127...and the virtual fader goes to the right like it's supposed to.
now...next...let's say i change to a different patch, where that same VIRTUAL fader is not at the max clockwise position..maybe it's only at 1pm. now when i turn the physical knob to the RIGHT, the midi data is still at 127 on the controller! it didn't "reset" to sync up with the new level (say 80 or so) setting on the new patch. so i can't increase that new setting of 80 by continuing to turn the knob to the right. i have to turn it all the way to zero,...and then continue PAST zero until the controller thinks that IT is at 0...at that point the controller and mainstage are in agreement, and things work fine....so bascially, the keyboard thinks the level is at max...but mainstage thinks the level is at 1pm.
i am using Logic 9, and i have a macbook pro 2.9 Ghz I7 with 8 gigs of memory and OS X 10.8.4

Serious HD & DVD drive issues

Hi,
I bought my MBP in April 2008.
1. After 6 months my dvd drive stopped reading discs, and now it doesn't read anything just spits all disks out.
2. My mac shuts down to black screen by itself every now and then. I'm guessing these are over heating issues?
3. The past week there are very loud buzzing noises coming out, and it sounds like something has melted. Again these are most probably over heating issues.
The problem is now, I bought this laptop in UK and now I live in Cyprus, so there is no one who can help me technically. I'm gonna call apple UK on Monday.
I'm just wondering if these issues are serious does apple replace the laptop with a new one?

Because I moved back to Cyprus and there is no official Apple dealer/service here. And I didn't want to end my laptop all the way to UK and wait for a DVD drive as I use it for Djing and all my music production work.
But now I'm afraid that things are getting worse so I might as well send it and wait a bit..

Serious Keyboard Key Mapping Issue

Hi there everyone...
Yesterday evening, while i was watching a movie on my Macbook, i accidentally pressed the command button, and all of a sudden the movie stopped playing.
After some research on the internet, I activated the keyboard palette, and found out that several keys had issues
1. The left command button behaved as if i was pressing command + . (period key)
2. The right command button behaved like command + up arrow key
3. The up arrow key like issue 2 above
4. The period key like issue 1 above
p.s. the up arrow and period keys arent working at all, they just behave as i explained above
Since it had to do with a modifier key, i tried to change the modifier key settings, but even though i tried accessing the modifier key settings through preferences, no pop-up window opened and no change could be made.
Even though i tried a PRAM zapping, nothing happened because as i understand it, the system doesnt recognise the shortcut, since together with command,option,p,r, the period key is seen pressed as well.
If anyone can help please do!

So I booted from the install disk.... Didnt now what exactly to do, so i use the terminal to see if the problem with the keys persisted... And unfortunately it did.... Didnt know what to do next so i quit and booted again...
But i restarted my macbook, only to boot into hardware test mode, to see if the problem really is on hardware side.
I am running an extended test, but poking around a bit, i noticed that the up arrow key worked fine...
Waiting now to see the results from the test, which i will post after it's finished.

Flash CS5 has a serious speed and crash issue.

Works PC.
Dell dual core 3.5Gb ram PC. 1 yr old
Launch time CS5 1 minute.
Opening a file is 1min 10sec, saving a file ditto, copying from lib takes 50 secs, pasting to another library 1min, replace existing item, go yes and it crashes.
Install CS5 trial on home very powerful purpose built CAD and video workstation, expect it to fly, but get same times, at least it doesnt crash first attempt but still terribly slow at everything.
Second time I try this routine it also crashes upon replace existing item.
Try saving files as CS4, they open into CS4 in seconds, wow what a difference !!!!, CS5 obviously at fault as a program, but text on buttons is a mess. so thats no good. Thats text created in CS5 not displaying when saved as CS4. Is this program in fact any good ?
File size of source file is 26Mb, of destination is 21Mb. Source has about 14 movie clips, select these and make a movieclip of them, copy/paste it to library of destination and it crashes.
Works PC reinstall Flash twice trying to resolve this, assuming its the prog, still its got these speeds and it crashes when accepting movieClip into Library. Remove the busy layer and try again and it accepts it, still damn slow. The home PC survived the busy layer paste first time round, suggesting the Office PC is at fault. But now its also crashing.
Has Flash CS5 a complexity limit ? These are map layers with many vector shapes on one of the layers, quite a few on three others. That layer seems to be the straw that breaks the camels back. Is 26Mb beyond the limit. I even upped the preferences for memory to 3000kb but no better.
I see on the forums complaints of CS5 speed on saving, users reverting to CS4. I wanted CS4 but was forced to have CS5 as it had just come out. New progs are not the best move but Adobe bully you.
The speed and crashes are prohibitive for business work, 3 days trying to do a mornings work.
I thought it was the PC but others are finding CS5 slow and crashing. What have we here as a prog...useless ! Adobe. you need to fix this. I would go back to CS4, I have it on home PC, but CS5 into 4 has text issues, unless the Office PC used a font not on the home one.

I still cant realize how this buggy piece of **** could make to the market! After I switched to Flash CS5 it became true headache working on Flash projects:
- in constantly crashes on saving, working with library, exiting;
- trying to create file with FLVPlayback throws dozens of errors with references to the classes that even do not exist in configuration folder nor in preinstalled SWC files that I HAD to reference manually;
- publishing in CS4 files that are published properly in CS5 throws tons of errors even though both reference existing classes and are for the same FP10 version.
- saving FLA for CS4 creates huge source file and compiling this file in CS4 creates SWF with 10x size (~280kb in CS5 and ~2800kb in CS4).
Even though Flash CS5 has some nice improvements in interface and ActionScrip editor which I do like, in general it is a complete DISASTER and huge TIME WASTER!

Serious FaceTime and iMessage issues.

When I enter my account information to log in to FaceTime and IMessage I press sign in and then it brings me to the next page, but then like 5 seconds later it brings me back to the sign in. Why is this happening?

Try a Reset...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

Serious hard disk space issue (9.2 on XP Professional, 56 GB not enough)

I installed Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on HP Pavilion running Windows XP Professional (Pentium 4).
Following are the numbers about disk space:
Space before starting Installation: 56.8 GB
Universal Installer indicated Enterprise Edition needs 2.86 GB and I selected General purpose database.
Universal Installer in summary before starting installation shows:
Space requirements as
C:\Required 2.57 (includes 90 MB temporary): Available 56.82GB
After completion of installation: I had hard disk space available as 32.6 GB (Approximately 25 GB space was taken)
Within couple of hours hard disk space dropped to 12 GB
and some thing kept taking the hard disk space.
Where is the problem? Oracle? XP? HP?
After uninstall Oracle and deleting Oracle home space is 56.5
Am I doing some thing wrong?
Earlier I tried the same on XP home edition and within couple of hours I ran out of space on same computer after installing Oracle 9.2
Any pointers, help greatly appreciated.

You were right HTTP was the problem. It keeps writing to
error_log file in Oracle\ora92\Apache\Apache\logs folder till hard disk is full.

Serious start-up speed issues...

Any idea why my 6 year old STOCK Dell laptop is faster at starting up than my 6 month old FULLY LOADED MacBook Pro? All of the sudden, I boot it up and it takes nearly 30 min to get to the login screen, then another 30 min to get to where anything is workable on the desktop. I've already had a hard drive replacement just a few weeks ago due to a faulty hard drive, so this only is practically brand new. Plus, I have only used about 70GB of the 120GB on it.

I have exactly the same problem. I have a MacBook Pro, barely a month old, with hardly anything on it yet. The one main thing that have added to it, is a windows portion as it was necessary for a work program. The windows portion is only 15GB and only has one program on it which is a sound effects thing. Mac was starting up fine up until a week or so ago, when I noticed that it was taking longer and longer to get anywhere, to the point where today I switched it on, left it for 40 minutes, and it still hadn't reached the login screen.
I had thought that it could be to do with windows, but I'm slightly relieved (though only a tiny amount!) to hear that others have had this problem. Is there anything I can do?! I'm having to use windows for everything at the moment, and that sort of defeats the point of having a Mac OS.

Serious Usb Audio issues after attempted fix.

I have serious macbook usb audio issues, some help?
So recently I've been trying to get rid of my the robotic sound my macbook makes with usb audio using this tutorial:

However after deleting a AppleUsbAudio and repairing the files permission with disk utilities it no longer works, period.

IOS 7 music playback issues in car on USB - iPhone 5

I'm having some serious and very frustrating issues with the new music app on iOS 7. I use my phone on USB to play music in my '13 Hyundai Sonata. Been doing that for about a year and it's been a dream. Now all of a sudden after upgrading to iOS 7, I have the following issues:
-serious lag (sometimes 5 sec) when changing songs from my steering wheel or stereo
-random songs not displaying their title (never had an issue previously with this)
-song time not showing as the song progresses. Just says 0:00
-hitting the rewind button to start a song over will actually go to the previous song, even if I'm well into the current song
-at random times it will just default back to the first song in my library when switching songs
This is my biggest issue with the update. I tried resetting by holding the power/home buttons but that didn't work. I haven't tried blue tooth because I don't want to drain the battery and pair it every time- my car makes me do that. May come to that though. Does anyone know of a fix for playing on the USB? It's basically unusable right now.
Not sure if this is related to the car issues or just the app in general, but I also can't tell Siri to play a song anymore- she doesn't let me finish talking before it beeps at me again.

I have been experiencing this problem as well. I have some 8,000 songs in my library and just shuffled it once and allow the player to pick songs for me. Sometimes I have to skip several dozen songs because it plays the same songs I listened to before.
Now, this gets a bit speculative, but I noticed that if I pause the player briefly, it will pick up where it left off -- even when "briefly" means several hours. Thus I am speculating that the bug happens when you switch applications. Leave the player on, maybe answer a couple of phone calls, and you should be fine. Use other apps, and the music player will jump back to the last place when you resumed it under controlled conditiojns. I hope others can confirm or refute this finding, as I have a real job to take care of too.
This also suggests a workaround; when you stop listening, pause the player, but then press play again, and pause again. If that works, you should be able to pick up from the first pause when you resume listening.

External hard drive issue - PC to Mac (weird problem...)

Hi everyone,
this is my first post and new to Macs, so apologies if this may have been covered elsewhere (though I can't find an answer!), but I'm getting seriously frustrated with this issue!
I've just recently been given an iMac and I'm trying to access my files and use my previously PC-mounted external hard drive as my iTunes library and general storage for everything else. However, I'm having permission issues in that it will only allow me read-only status. I followed instructions from other forums and google searches that said I should install macFUSE and NTFS-3G drivers and this would solve the issue, which it did. Then my girlfriend turned off the hard drive accidently at the wall socket and once I remounted it, it has returned to read-only once again and even re-installing the drivers makes no difference!!!
I'm running an iMac PowerMac G4, Mac OS X 10.5.6 if that has any relevance?

Hi Adam;
Personally instead of attempting to use NTFS, I would suggest that you reformat to HFS+.
Using NTFS on a Mac is always a kluge at best. It will always give you problems. If you reformat to HFS+ then you are using the native format and everything should work much better for you.

It is a serious enough backward compatibility issue, and
doubtless affects other content too. I'm hoping for the outcome

Has anyone else had any issues with their iPhone 5

I had a problem with Siri this weekend. Asked a question and got it answered, then asked another question and it was just "thinking" and didn't answer. This morning I connected to iTunes and the screen went black except for time, service bar. I had to shut it down and turn it back on. And is it just me, or does the battery run down A LOT faster??

Everyone else seems to be using their iPhone 5 devices trouble free No, but seriously...the issue with the fast draining battery is probably your push notifications or the known problem with excessive data network usage. Make sure you adjust your app settings to reduce push notification usage, and monitor your data usage to see if your phone is secretly downloading tons of data. People are describing gigs worth of data over a few days.
WiFi also drains batteries pretty fast. If you don't need it, turn it off.
Sounds to me like Siri had a freakout that sapped the memory of the phone (some kind of memory leak/bad programming). The restart probably stopped whatever was stuck in a loop.

OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 Wifi still has issues!!

So, i just updated to os x yosemite 10.10.1 hoping that apple would've fixed the Wifi dropping down issues, and as i restart my mac and install the update, and connect to wifi back again, it just drops down within few seconds like it did on yosemite 10.10!! I expected apple to do some serious maintenance on this issue but it seems that they didn't tweak a thing! Hopefully in the next issue it doesn't say

so, hopefully this will be my last concern regarding this OS.

This site seems to have some useful solutions. I just tried step one, and (fingers crossed) I seem to have a good wifi connection (although I'm just WAITING for that wifi signal to go dim ). At least it gives you something to try instead of waiting for apple to respond!

Reconnect issues w/FCP 6 with "phantom missing clips"

Ok folks it's kinda hard to describe in a concise way what's going on so please bear with me.
We are working with FCP6 on multiple machines.
We have one master project file that Edit 1 houses.
We work on the other machines on a copy of that master project file and bring in the work sequences into the Edit 1 master project as they are completed.
We do this a lot and move sequences around.
Ever now and then we have serious reconnection to media issues on the main machine where when I go to reconnect a sequence to the media files it will bring up a ton of "blank" or "phantom" clips in the missing files box in the reconnect window. Basically instead of a list of clip names that FCP wants me to reconnect it will list a batch of clips that are blank with no txt and therefore we have no way of connecting that media.
Has anyone experienced this issue before and how have you worked around this?
any help very much appreciated and if you need more info to understand what the **** I'm talking about then please let me know!

I've never been able to truly get that to happen properly.
Over the break I will give that one more shot.
On the two main systems we work with we do have the same size and config of drives etc so it can be achieved. I'll take a look at that option over the break and see if I make make it happen.
I do take the project home at times and media manage the footage into a much smaller drive to work on sections of the project so in that case there's no way around it. Although I guess if I keep the naming and folder structure the same it's possible. I'll give that a try too.
