Server 2012 File Preview Locks Files

Hi everybody,
I recently reinstalled one of my customers server.
The previous installation was Server 2008 Foundation running RDS and the new installation Server 2012R2 Foundation (RDS).
With the previous installation it was possible to use the file preview for documents like Word and Excel or PDF in the explorer, and while these files were openend it was possible to delete them or move them.
With the new installation on Server 2012 it's not possible to delete or move these files when they are shown in the explorer preview.
Any ideas?
There is also another issue, it should be possible to preview saved e-mail (*.msg) conversations with the Windows Explorer when the 32-bit "Outlook 2013 / Office" version has been installed
This also doesn't work, the preview handler has not been made for x64 but for the x86 it should work. But it doesn't show the messages in the explorer.
Kind regards,
Tim

Hi Tim,
Turns out there is no Windows Server 2012 R2 foundation in our lab, I have tested this on a Windows 8.1 machine.
In my tests, there is no issue to delete Word and Excel files when there are in the Preview Pane, and saved email conversations can be viewed through the Preview Pane, also can be deleted.
As for PDF file, the Preview Pane is unavailable.
The preview of *.msg files still doens't work in the explorer.
I'm thinking that the Kerio plugin for Outlook is creating this issue...
Do you also have the same issue on other machines?
Regarding Outlook related issues, I suggest you also refer to experts from Outlook forums to see if they have more insights.

  • Server 2012 Hyper-V locks up Virtual Server for no reason.

Server 2012 Hyper-V locks up virtual servers for no reason.
This is a production server. I began building this server in February. I installed the server in November. 2012 server R1 is full of bugs!
First who was the rocket scientist that decided that the TURN OFF function in Hyper-V means "Please turn off when the
F*#@$*% you feel like it"? Idiots!
I have a Supermicro server with perfect memory (for those who want to blame this on memory).
It is running 12 Virtual Servers. Every morning, at a random time, at least 1 of the servers lock up solid. Sometimes as many as 5 decide that for no reason they all want to lock up. The servers that lock up may be 1 or more: a database server, a terminal
server, an exchange server, a Windows 8.1 Ent VDI server, an IIS server, and or AD server. All 2012 R1.
They are running all current Microsoft and other vendor patches and hardware updates.
The only common denominator is the Hyper-V server.
I cannot shut them down using the Hyper-V manager. I cannot turn them off. I have a hundred users standing by while I nicely ask them to turn off. The VM will turn off after 20 minutes and a lot of gentle coaxing.
I cannot Kill the vmwp.exe process associated with the locked Virtual Machine.
No .DMP are created. No events in the event viewers. No reason at all. When they restart, there is no indication of a problem.
I ran two VMWP dumps and posted it here.
    www.a1bcs.com/hyper-vlockup.zipx
Does anyone know why these are locking up?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Robert

I'm not positive of the cause but I was able to stop the problems.
It turned out that Network Load Balancing (NLB) between the two terminal servers and another between the two gateways was causing the lockups.
This is a normal configuration and it should work. Especially since Microsoft has seen fit to remove the DRAIN USERS function from RDP as well as the LOCK OUT till next reboot function. JUST FYI these functions are still available at a DOS prompt
by using the CHGLOGON command. But still the NLB also provides these functions.
Anyhow, once I removed the NLB I haven't had the lockups anymore.
That doesn't however change the fact that TURN OFF should mean TURN OFF not turn off please!
    Thanks again,
    Robert

  • Constand InDesign Crashing in a Mixed Server Environment and Undeletable Lock File

    Hello All,
I have been running into a lot of problems with InDesign recently. I have been working on a 14 MB .indd file with approximately 50 MB of linked files with it. ID will crash with other files open, so it doesn't seem to be file specific. Here are some details about our operating environment:
All files are located on a server running Mavericks with Server 3.0
I am using ID CC 2014 on Windows 7
2 other people are using OSX Mavericks and using ID CC 2014
I will typically have this file open for hours at a time, making occasional changes and updates. Every once in a while I get a windows dialog message that says "The network connection was lost for the file "\\FILEPATH HERE", or the file was modified by another process."
I have checked with my colleagues and they are nowhere near this directory and yet this error occurs.
After I click OK on this box, a crash box occurs for InDesign saying that I must close it. The error details are as follows:

These errors occur at random intervals, and sometimes when links are updated in AI or PS. Is there a connection there?
In addition to this, I can no longer reopen the file, as the crash causes the ID lock file to remain there, giving no access to the .indd file. I cannot delete this file unless the administrator of the server deletes the file.
Does anyone have any insights into these problems? Thank you in advance.

Set up a new group called "Workers" or something like that and put in the Users into that group. Now go to Server.app and assign the Group to your share ADDITIONALLY (not by changing the group you see in the Posix permissions) by hit the "+" sign. Give READ & WRITE to the group. The go to Server > Hardware > Storage and propagate the permissons to the included files & folders.
That should clear you problems by setting up and additional read & write permission by ACL, which is not overwritten, when a user saves a document to "The Box".

You can still run two Windows 2012R2 Servers on Esxi, just like Gary said.  For 10 users, it's really not that big of a deal either way.

  • Server 2012 SMB3 for redirecting files or VHD

    Hello,
I’m new to Server 2012 and my question is, should I use Server 2012 SMB3 shares for redirecting files and folders or should I create a virtual HD, put the VHD in the shared folder and do file and folder redirection to the VHD? Is there a preference to use

It's not clear what you want to do really. If you want to run VMs on the same machine then hosting them in a loopback on SMB 3.0 folder is not supported configuration. See:
    Deploy Hyper-V over SMB
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134187.aspx
"Loopback configurations (where the computer that is running Hyper-V is used as the file server for virtual
    machine storage) are not supported."

If hypervisor and actual file server are different hosts then you'll be fine.
If you want to run VMs locally on the same host then again using "nested" VHD(x) is by far the best idea.
Did it put a bit more light on the issue? :)

  • Server 2012 SMB 3.0 file cluster issues with Streaming media services 2008 R2

So I have a file server setup with the always available feature turned off on this brand new cluster. Everything seems to function normally and I can hit files from the shares no problem.
My issue I built a brand new 2008 R2 machine and created an on-demand publishing point to point to my 2012 file share cluster. I created a windows account for my windows media service to run as and applied read only to my video share. Media services see
the video files on the server in the GUI so I know its got connectivity, but when I go to test locally or externally it will not play the stream at all. It complains of access even know I know that is not the issue. I have verified the setup and the ACL
stuff is turned off on both the root and the publishing point. I can login to the Media server as my service account and play files from the share no problem. IIS media services can stream the files with no problem and yeah everything seems more like something
possibly with SMB 3.0 and something in media services.
I have a country rule where my data is not allowed in other countries so I have multiple video services on a domain with tunnels and what not my US Streaming services is working great but has a server 2008 R2 file cluster server. If I take that one to my
out of the country publishing point to test it streams great as they use the same services account. If I take my out of the country file share to the US I get the same result just will not work. I have poke prodded and banged my head and since I get this result
I have concluded it must be something with the new security of SMB 3.0.
Does anyone have this working or tested? Also I am using the exact same video file to test all of this. Or is there secret I missed to either make smb 3.0 even more compatible or make streaming services play nice.
Anything helps please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Adam

I'd recommend calling in for support on this one.  Things aren't adding up.  Probably the most useful thing to do would be to do a network trace of the WMS server connecting to the remote server over SMB.

  • Preview locks files - cannot edit in Photoshop CS6

Preview has locked all my image files - Even if I use the dropdown menu in the Title bar and change it to unlocked - makes no difference - I still cannot save/save as when I open an image in Photoshop CS6 - it says I  do not have permission, or someone else is using file etc. I have gone into Get Info - does not says file/folder is locked - have made sure that I have Read/Write privileges in the Get Info window - makes no difference.  It basically means I cannot use Photoshop - the only thing that works in Photoshop is Save for Web. I have lost two jobs that I was to do by Christmas because of this - if anyone can help I would be most appreciative!

Set up CS6 as an secondary editor, and then it will use LR's built-in ACR to process the files, instead of the external ACR with CS6. The external ACR 6.7 also processes D800, just not ACR 7 just yet.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Scale out file server cluster using server disks as CSV

    Hi,
My question is if I can create a Scale Out File Server Cluster with CSV using the disks that comes with the servers, we have 2 servers with 2 arrays each one, 1 array for the OS files and 1 array that we could use for the CSV.
    Regards.

    Hi,
a SoFS needs some kind of shared Storage, this could be in the old days ISCSI or FC SAN and now also a Shared SAS JBOD with Clustered Storage Spaces.
If you have 2  Servers with "local" Disks you need some sort of Software to create a Shared Disk Layer out of that local Disks, like Starwind or DataCore.

oh i forgot the normal 4th Option, some Kind of Clustered Raid Controller like HP or Dell offer in some Solutions.
    Udo
Udo, clustered RAID controllers still require SAS disks mounted into external enclosure *OR* everything mounted into single chassis for Cluster-In-A-Box scenario (but that's for OEMs). The only two benefits somebody would have with them are a) ability to
privide RAID LUs to Clustered Storage Spaces (non-clustered RAID controllers would be used as a SAS controllers only in pass-thru mode) and b) abillity to have caches synchronized so VM moved from one physical host to another would not start from the "cold"
state. Please see LSI Syncro reference manual for details:
    Syncro 8i
    http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public/Syncro%20Shared%20Storage/docs/LSI_PB_SyncroCS_9271-8i.pdf
"LSI Syncro CS solutions are designed to provide continuous application uptime at a fraction

technology, the Syncro CS 9271-8i enables OEMs and system builders to use Syncro CS
controllers to build cost-effective two-node Cluster-in-a-Box (CiB) systems and deliver high
availability in a single self-contained unit.
    Syncro 8e
    http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public/Syncro%20Shared%20Storage/docs/LSI_PB_SyncroCS_9286-8e.pdf
LSI Syncro CS solutions are designed to provide continuous application uptime at a fraction
of the cost and complexity of traditional high availability solutions. Built on LSI MegaRAID
technology, the Syncro CS 9286-8e solution allows a system administrator to build a costeffective,
easy to deploy and manage server failover cluster using volume servers and an offthe-
shelf JBOD. Syncro CS solutions bring shared storage and storage controller failover into
DAS environments, leveraging the low cost DAS infrastructure, simplicity, and performance
benefits. Controller to controller connectivity is provided through the high performance SAS
interface, providing the ability for resource load balancing, helping to ensure that applications
are using the most responsive server to boost performance and help prevent any one server
    from being overburdened.
So... Making long story short: 8i is for OEMs and 8e is for end-users but require a JBOD.
    Hope this helped :)

  • Bad File Permissions, Locked Files, Applications and Drives

I've been running in to a huge problem the last few days and I can't find a solution short of a complete archive and reinstall. The problem started with photoshop CS3; I couldn't open the application because it said that it was locked and to go into the 'get info' panel and change it. Well, it's not locked and nothing I did could change that. Shortly after this, I started getting folders and files that would keep changing their permissions so I wouldn't have access to them any more. I kept getting the "Unknown" user in the 'Get Info' panel of these files and folders. While trying to find a solution to that, I could no longer add files to the Trash without immediately emptying it. I tried the steps from this post but nothing worked:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1216618&tstart=0
After trying all this, All of my drives except my Main Boot Drive locked itself and I can't figure out what's going on. I have never had this many problems happen in the 12+ years of owning a Mac. could someone please help me.

I went back to 10.4.11. Right before the upgrade to 10.5 I bought a new hard drive and cloned my old system to it and then upgraded. When my machine became completely unusable, I was able to just through in my old drive. I didn't loose that much, but it's still frustrating. I'm still dealing with all my external drives being Locked or the permissions are so messed up that it might as well be locked. I'm gonna be waiting for 10.5.4 before I even think of upgrading again. Worst system upgrade I've EVER had to do.

  • Issue with lock file in Oracle 10g app server - MDB not running

    Hi,
I have Oracle 10g & MQ 6 on my laptop. I generated JNDI bindings for app server-MQ by giving ip address of my machine first. Then i changed it to "localhost" & generated new set of .bindings file.
With this new set i am able to send messages from my program to a queue. I also have an MDB which should listen to the same queue.
However now my mdb is not listening to the queue & i suspect it is due to host address change, - because each time i start the server, i see a lock file created "OracleASRouter_store.lock" - under j2ee\home\persistance. And below is the content of the same -
    "O10.1.4.245:/C:/Program Files/Oracle/oc4j_extended_101330/j2ee/home/persistence/"
As per few suggestions on this site, I deleted this file & restated app server, deleted whole content of persistance folder, restarted app server. But each time i see this file created and also see the ip address in log.xml under j2ee\home\log\oc4j
Error message in this log.xml file is

what should be the size in MB (not in %) of autogrowth. based on what we have to determine the ideal size of file auto growth.

It's very difficult to give a definitive answer on this. Best principal is to size your database correctly in advance so that you never have to autogrow, of course in reality that isn't always practical.
The setting you use is really dictated by the expected growth in your files. Given that the size is relatively small why not set it to 1gb on the datafile(s) and 512mb on the log file? The important thing is to monitor it on an on-going basis to see if that's
    the appropriate amount.
One thing you should do is enable instant file initialization by granting the service account Perform Volume Maintenance tasks in group policy. This will allow the data files to grow quickly when required, details here:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175935%28v=sql.105%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
Also, it possible to query the default trace to find autogrowth events, if you wanted you could write an alert/sql job based on this
    SELECT
    [DatabaseName],
    [FileName],
    [SPID],
    [Duration],
    [StartTime],
    [EndTime],
    CASE [EventClass]
    WHEN 92 THEN 'Data'
    WHEN 93 THEN 'Log' END
    FROM sys.fn_trace_gettable('c:\path\to\trace.trc', DEFAULT)
    WHERE
    EventClass IN (92,93)
    hope that helps

  • Server 2012 Failover Cluster No Disks available / iSCSI

    Hi All,
I am testing out the Failover Clustering on Windows Server 2012 with hopes of winding up with a clustered File Server once I am done.
I am starting with a single node in the cluster for testing purposes; I have connected to this cluster a single iSCSI LUN that is 100GB in size.
When I right click on Storage -> Disks  and then click 'Add Disk', I get No disks suitable for cluster disks were found.
I get this, even if I add a second server to the cluster, and connect it to the iSCSI drive as well.
    Any ideas?

For testing purpose you'd better spawn a set of VMs on a single physical Hyper-V host and use shared VHDX as a back clusterd storage. That would be both much easier and much faster then what you do. + it would be trivial move one of the VMs to another physical
host, shared VHDX to CSV on a shared storage and go from Test & Development to production :) See:
    Shared VHDX

For a pure iSCSI scenario you may try this step-by-step guide (just skip StarWind config as you do have a shared storage already with your SAN). See:
Configuring HA File Server on Windows Server 2012 for SMB NAS

Hope this helped a bit :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Install Windows server 2012 using powershell

    Hi Folks,
How to Install Windows server 2012 using powershell.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to install Windows server 2012 via PowerShell.
Per the previous thread, we could not install Windows server 2012 directly via PowerShell.

As this is the forum for SharePoint server on-premise, I’m not familiar with the Windows server, for this issue, I recommend you can post a new question in the forum for Windows server.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=winserver8setup
More experts will assist you, then you will get more information relation to Windows server.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
