Windows Server 2012 R2 Scale out file server cluster using server disks as CSV

Hi,
My question is if I can create a Scale Out File Server Cluster with CSV using the disks that comes with the servers, we have 2 servers with 2 arrays each one, 1 array for the OS files and 1 array that we could use for the CSV.

a SoFS needs some kind of shared Storage, this could be in the old days ISCSI or FC SAN and now also a Shared SAS JBOD with Clustered Storage Spaces.
If you have 2  Servers with "local" Disks you need some sort of Software to create a Shared Disk Layer out of that local Disks, like Starwind or DataCore.

oh i forgot the normal 4th Option, some Kind of Clustered Raid Controller like HP or Dell offer in some Solutions.

Udo, clustered RAID controllers still require SAS disks mounted into external enclosure *OR* everything mounted into single chassis for Cluster-In-A-Box scenario (but that's for OEMs). The only two benefits somebody would have with them are a) ability to
privide RAID LUs to Clustered Storage Spaces (non-clustered RAID controllers would be used as a SAS controllers only in pass-thru mode) and b) abillity to have caches synchronized so VM moved from one physical host to another would not start from the "cold"

    We are looking to implement a 2-node 2012 R2 Scale-out File Server cluster (using SAS JBOD enclosure) for the primary purpose of storing the VHD files that will be accessed by a 4-node 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster using 10 gigabit Ethernet (no RDMA).  Our
    environment can be characterised as having a large number of mostly idle VMs that experience sporadic, low intensity use (this is *not* a VDI environment).  We have 2 questions.
    1) To what extent is RAM a consideration for the SoFS servers?  We can't find any documentation to suggest that there are benefits to be gained by having more RAM in the SoFS servers but we don't know if we should go with 8/16/32/64+ GB RAM in each
    of the nodes.
    2) With the need to keep costs down, we don't think RDMA / SMB-Direct NICs are going to be within our reach.  Should we however look to have 2 * dual-port 10 Gbps NICs in both the SoFS & Hyper-V boxes?

    Unless your VMs are read-intensive and you're going to deploy a CSV cache memory requirement for serving mostly idle VMs can be pretty low. However RAM is cheap these days so going for less then 16GB per node does not sound reasonable. Good sample, see:

    Just trying to get a definitive answer to the question of can we use a Shared VHDX in a SOFS Cluster which will be used to store VHDX files?
    We have a 2012 R2 RDS Solution and store the User Profile Disks (UPD) on a SOFS Cluster that uses "traditional" storage from a SAN. We are planning on creating a new SOFS Cluster and wondered if we can use a shared VHDX instead of CSV as the storage
    that will then be used to store the UPDs (one VHDX file per user).

  • Scale out file server client access point using public nic

    Thoughts on this one.
    I have a Scale Out File Server cluster with a Client Access Point. Whenever i talk to the Client Access Point it uses the public nics.
    If i talk to the Scale Out File Server directly it uses the private like i want it to. How can i get the Client Access Point using the private nics?

    Could you tell us why you want to modify the CAP use the “private” network, the CAP is used for client access, your clients may can’t access your cluster if modify your CAP

  • How to backup a Scale Out File Server

    Can anyone explain to me how i am supposed to backup my Scale Out File Server? It is used to host our VDI environment but we have thrown a few other minimal shares on there for stuff relevant to the VDI setup. Profile Disk/Scripts etc

    Scale out file server support in DPM is for VM's (and SQL DB's I think), only and to be honest because of the metadata overhead using scale out file server and CSV as a general file server is not a good choice.  To protect VM's running on a scale out
    file server the VM's are backed up from the Hyper-V hosts but the Scale Out file servers do require a DPM agent on them.  SMB 3.0 has a new feature which enables Remote VSS therefore the volumes (shares) are snapped from the Hyper-V hosts.

  • Cluster Quorum Disk failing inside Guest cluster VMs in Hyper-V Cluster using Virtual Disk Sharing Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hi, I'm having a problem in a VM Guest cluster using Windows Server 2012 R2 and virtual disk sharing enabled. 
    It's a SQL 2012 cluster, which has around 10 vhdx disks shared this way. all the VHDX files are inside LUNs on a SAN. These LUNs are presented to all clustered members of the Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster, via Cluster Shared Volumes.
    Yesterday happened a very strange problem, both the Quorum Disk and the DTC disks got the information completetly erased. The vhdx disks themselves where there, but the info inside was gone.
    The SQL admin had to recreated both disks, but now we don't know if this issue was related to the virtualization platform or another event inside the cluster itself.
    Right now I'm seen this errors on one of the VM Guest:

    We don't know if this can happen again, what if this happens on disk with data?! We don't know if this is related to the virtual disk sharing technology or anything related to virtualization, but I'm asking here to find out if it is a possibility.

  • SCVMM 2012 R2 managing Scale Out Fileserver: Creates only MBR style disks limited at 2 TB?!

    I'm new to managing scale out fileservers with SCVMM and so far have been unable to create a share within SCVMM on a scale out fileserver with a volume which is larger than 2 TB... It looks like SCVMM creates a virtual disk on my storage spaces pool (which
    was also created by SCVMM) of lets say 10 TB but the volume it creates within this virtual disk is only 2 TB in size. I cannot extended it because the partition style is MBR. This leaves me wondering why would SCVMM create a 10 TB disk with a MBR partition?!
    Am I doing something wrong here or is this a bug?
    If I manually create everything in Windows Server Manager then i have control over the partition type and hence can create a volume of 10 TB... But I Need SCVMM to manage this.

    I just learned from someone a Microsoft that this is a bug in SMAPI. A bug will be filed and then fixed.

    clusters, but also need off-site replicas for the data sources.

    There is no change in DPM 2012 R2 with respect to secondary protection for scale out Hyper-v.  Consider backing up to Azure for offsite solution.

  • Accessing Windows 2008 File Service Cluster with Windows 2012R2 File Services Cluster using same SAN

    I am in the process on converting my existing Windows 2008 host servers (2 host cluster) to a Windows 2012 R2  (2 host cluster).
    All 4 servers will be accessing the same SAN via ISCSI. 
    Currently the Windows 2008 host servers are running both File server roles and Hyper-V in clustered environment.
    How can I transfer the File Server roles from 2008 to 2012R2 will still keeping access to the same SAN and LUNS?

    You would have a short outage, but all it takes is to set up the 2012R2 cluster with the appropriate roles.  Then remove the LUNs from the 2008 cluster and present them to 2012R2 cluster.  You could initially build the 2012R2 cluster with just
    its witness disk sitting on the iSCSI SAN, then move the other LUNs over at your leisure.

  • Windows Server 2012 - Disk IO & High Latency

    We have a very strange issue on what appears to be all of our Windows 2012 servers.
    We can build a basic server, HP Proliant DL 380 Gen 8 - RAID 0 (2x 300GB 15K SAS). Install Windows 2012, patch to latest levels, all HP firmware and drivers at latest levels on HP website.
    Pretty much a vanilla Windows build, even without Anti Virus at this stage. (This same issue occurs with IBM HS22 blades as well with base build and all latest IBM firmware / drivers so does not appear to be single vendor issue).
    Take a large file, for testing a 20GB VHD. If we copy this file from C:\Temp to C:\Temp  we get about 1.4GB/s transfer speed (Not bad). However post copy all processes in Performance Monitor
    Disk Latency increase to over 1500 ms. This happens every time we copy a large file.
    The file systems is NTFS.
    The array controllers cache settings are set 75% READ / 25% WRITE.
    This problem is much worse when it occurs on our Windows 2012 Scale Out File
     Cluster with Hyper-V hosts using the storage. In theory if a client (Hyper-V server) requests a large Read or Write activity you see a good throughput, but then followed by a large period of disk latency afterwards on all processes on the
    file server. If multiple requests from clients occur simultaneously then this problem is severe enough to hang / crash the file server.
    This also occurs when the servers are not using the "C:" drive and instead are using the CSV volumes on our IBM V7000 array. In this scenario the server has 4x 8Gb HBAs connected to
    the 8x 8GB FC connections on the V7000. EasyTier is enabled SSD Disk Pool to 15K SAS Disk Pool. So in this scenario I know that the issue is not due to an underlying performance issue within the disk subsystem.
    This does disk latency issue did not occur on Windows 2008 with the same hardware EG: HP Proliant DL 380 G7 with local or V7000 disk.
    Therefore there appears to be a major difference / problem in the Windows 2012 disk IO stack.
    Another thing to notice, if a process is running a large copy EG: the VHD copy above and a second or third copy is executed the data transfer of all process does not reach an equal level instead
    one process reaches the highest transfer rate then slows down and the other process takes over. This kind of activity is again not what we used to see on 2008 or other operating systems.
    Can anyone shed any light on this? Does anyone else see a similar IO profile?

    We do have multiple SoFS nodes in the cluster, all have have dual 10Gb NICs with RDMA ability (Mellanox Connect3) connected to Brocade VDX switches. RDMA works a treat between hosts using SMB Direct & SMB Mulitchannel. The SAN disks from SoFS are 8Gb
    FC, the local disks are SAS.
    The problem we have is locally not even remote. EG: The latency occurs on the SoFS when copying data from C: to C: or from CSV Vol1 to CSV Vol1.
    It is very strange, not seen this issue before. It makes me think its a bug as it can be created on other Windows 2012 hosts with just local disk.

  • Restoring new DB to SMB3 Scale Out Server Disk takes forever to initialize

    We have a SQL Server 2014 DB installed on a VM running 2012 R2 Standard with Datacenter 2012 R2 as the host. We have a Scale Out File Server (SOFS) running 2012 R2 on two nodes clustered (CSV).  The entire network is 10GB.  SQL server is configured
    to use the SOFS cluster for it's databases files (using SMB3 as a network share).  When restoring a backup to the server as a new database restore, the process takes about an hour (it's a big DB 210GB).  When restoring the backup over the top
    of the existing database (nearly similar file/DB sizes), the restore takes 10 minutes.  I have read about "Instant File Initialization" but that appears to only apply to directly attached disks where the OS can block allocate the data using
    some "Volume Maintenance" permissions.   The network traffic during the "initialization phase" seems to be floating about 700mbs, yet when the actual restore counter starts (reading the backup file and writing the data) the network
    activity steps up to 6.5Gbs - sometimes higher - the count down appears to take 10 minutes either way.  So I'm quite sure that the 50 minutes is attributable to the initialization phase.   Which seems horribly excessive.
    Has anyone had similar experience using this kind of configuration? 

    For these databases, we use the simple recovery model.  So the log file is not very large (5GB compared to the 200GB of the data file).

    I have also been trying to install PP CC on Windows Server 2012 R2. I chose this because I am attempting to connect to a SAN with SMB over RDMA over Infiniband, and only 2012 supports the protocols I require to do this. Regardless, the problems I am having with Server 2012 R2 is that Server 2012 no longer supports direct installation of Windows Media Player, which has core files required for use by Premiere. Instead, Microsoft will try to have you install IIS Media Services which doesn't help in this situation.
    I did find a solution to this that appears to be working. If you go to Server Manager and install the Desktop Experience Feature this should install the WMP core required in Premiere (Manage -> Add roles and features  -> Add Feature -> User Interfacce and Infrastructure -> Desktop Experience).
    So as John Smith said, it isn't officially supported by Adobe, but it does seem to work once you go through those first first annoying steps.

    i have two servers that i wish to cluster as my Hyper V hosts and also two file servers each with 10 4TB SATA disks, all i have read about implementing high availability at the storage level involves clustering the file servers (e.g SOFS) which require external
    shared storage that the servers in the cluster can access directly. i do not have external storage and do not have budget for it.
    Is it possible to implement some for of HA with windows server 2012 R2 file servers without shared storage? for example is it possible to cluster the servers and have data on one server mirrored real-time to the other server such that if one server goes
    down, the other server will take over processing storage request using the mirrored data?
    i intend to use the storage to host VMs for Hyper V fail-over cluster and an SQL server cluster. they will access the shared on the file server through SMB
    each file server also has 144GB SSD, how can i use it to improve performance?

    There are two ways for you to go:
    1) Build a cluster w/o shared storage using MSFT upcoming version of Windows (yes, finally they have that feature and tons of other cool stuff). We've recently build both Scale-Out File Server serving Hyper-V cluster and standard general-purpose File Server

    Will do things like on the picture below:
    Just be aware: feature is new, build is preview (not even beta) so failover does not happen transparently (even with CA feature of SMB 3.0 enabled). However I think tuning timeout and improving I/O performance will fix that. SoFS failover is transparent
    even right away.
    2) If you cannot wait 9-12 months from now (hope MSFT is not going to delay their release) and you're not happy with a very basic functionality MSFT had put there (active-passive design, no RAM cache, requirement for separated storage, system/boot and dedicated
    log disks where SSD is assumed) you can get advanced stuff with a third-party software doing things similar to the picture below:
    So it will basically "mirror" some part of your storage (can be even directly-accessed file on your only system/boot disk) between hypervisor or just Windows hosts creating fault-tolerant and distributed SAN volume with optimal SMB3/NFS shares.

    Do you mean than you want everyone have their own personal share folder? And need to limit the folder size?
    I think you can use the FTP server function in Windows server.
