Server 2012 R2 Backup to NAS fails: another process has locked portion of the file
I am trying to setup Windows Server Backups in Server 2012R2
My
script didn't work, so started troubleshooting from the very bottom. My backup target is a DLink NAS drive with shared folder (full anonymous access and also tried setting up a dedicated user) Source to back up is a small folder on drive C From Server Backup
manager -> Backup Once, add my folder to items to backup, point to \10.1.1.49\Volumes_1 Click backup, goes trough initial motion and the fails with error: "The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file"
Hi,
Sorry for the delay in reply.
Whether it is the same error message as before when trying to backup a newly created TXT file to the NAS?
The message shows it is locked by a process so is there any security application running on your system? Test to disable them and see the result.
As I'm not familiar with your NAS, you may need to confirm with its support to see if any change it will lock the backup process.

Process can't access file bcos another process has locked a portion of file
Does anyone knows if Java could handle the well-known "Open File" problem.
I encounter the following error when I was trying to copy an outlook file to another location:
java.io.IOException: The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file.
My codes is placed below for reference.
Note that I was only trying to open to open the file for reading the Inputstream. Please advise what I could do to avoid getting caught in exception while reading the bytes.
It will be good if Java could handle the Microsoft's "Open File" problem.
// my codes
public static void main(String[] args)
int BUFSIZE = 4096;
File theFile = new File("C:\\Documents and Settings\\" + myID +
"\\Local Settings\\Application Data\\" +
"Microsoft\\Outlook\\mail.pst");
long size = theFile.length();
try {
FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(theFile);
// exception will happen on the next line
if (!(size >= 0 &&
fis.read(new byte[BUFSIZE],0,(int)Math.min(size,BUFSIZE)) > -1)) {
System.out.println("encountered OFM problem");
} else {
System.out.println("read file successfully");
} catch (Exception e) {
System.out.println("caught OFM problem");
e.printStackTrace();Sometimes Windows can place a lock on files that will
prevent you from even reading its contents. You may
have to close the MS Outlook application in your
machine to be able to read the contents of this file.Of course I knew Microsoft has locked the file.
I also knows Microsoft locks a lot of other files too.
The idea is that we just want to read the file, we are not writing or modifying anyway, so we should be able to read it. Of course that depends on whether Java wants to step into the area and do something about it. (Please read http://www.stbernard.com/products/docs/ofm_whitepaperV8.pdf)
Well, the easiest way anyone could advise is probably to use Microsoft development tools. The idea is nobody wants to be a "Micro-slaves" if we could...
So I am still waiting for someone with the area of expertise to reply... -
I have just tried to update my ipod touch and the update failed but it has locked my ipod. All I get is a picture of the itunes logo and the usb lead. I am unable to get the ipod to move and I don't know what to do. I think I should be recompenced by Apple if I have to pay to get it fixed!
The logo is saying connect it to your computer with iTunes installed on the computer. I assume when yo do this that the iPod is not seen in iTunes. to make iTunes appear try:
- Resetting the iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Place the iPod in recovery mode. See:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
- Place the iPod in DFU mode:
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
If the iPod appears in iTunes restore the iPOd. If not I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. -

You have two devices that access the same email account with POP configuration, this lock the access from another device.
the solution is to configure one device in IMAP,

The shim execution failed unexpectedly - Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation
Hello Everyone,
I have upgraded a SharePoint 2010 site collection to SharePoint 2013. It contains a BDC model used to insert/get records from DB. The record fetch works good but when I try to insert records it gives me error
The shim execution failed unexpectedly - Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation
I am using web part control to insert record which has the following code.
BdcService service = SPFarm.Local.Services.GetValue<BdcService>(String.Empty);
IMetadataCatalog catalog = service.GetDatabaseBackedMetadataCatalog(SPServiceContext.Current);
IEntity entity = catalog.GetEntity(EntityNamespace, EntityName);
ILobSystemInstance LobSysteminstance = entity.GetLobSystem().GetLobSystemInstances()[0].Value;
IView createView = entity.GetCreatorView("Order_Create");
IFieldValueDictionary valueDictionary = createView.GetDefaultValues();
txtWONumber.Text = Convert.ToString( GetNewOrderNumber());
valueDictionary["BU_ID"]=Convert.ToInt32(ddlBU.SelectedValue);
Identity id = entity.Create(valueDictionary, LobSysteminstance);
_BDCIdentity = GetBDCIdentity(txtWONumber.Text);
It is working fine in 2010 Farm. I have gone thorugh all the settings in BDC model and every thing looks fine. All users has atleast execution rights on BDC model, BDC service is running and Site collection admin and Farm admin has rights onexternal
DB.
Any one has any clue to this error?So I sort it by myself. One thing to consider seriously in this error is to look in to the Inner Exception rather than just looking on the main exception detail.
In my case it was UserProfile was not running and when I started the UserProfile service the error vanished.
There was no problem with the BDC or Webpart. -
The Volume Shadow Copy service initially was running under the context of System, so we thought that ‘System’ doesn’t have permissions to access network shares.
When the Volume Shadow Copy service was running under the context of System, this was the error logged:
“failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).”
Which is likely due to not having permissions to write to the network location.
This is a scheduled backup trying to write to a network location, so we changes the service to run under the context of an account that does have permissions to write to the network share.
Then the error changed to this:
“failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).”

We aren’t really seeing anything that gives any hint on what the issue is.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!We are trying to back up folders/files from 2 local drives (C: & D:), both of which have only 10% space used, and 100 GB free.
We are attempting to back the files up to a Remote Shared File (and there is 100+ GB free space out there).
If we try another network location, we receive the exact same error.
This is Windows Server 2012, not running Hyper-V and is a physical server not a VM.
Thank you for the link.

Failure to create a shared protection point during Windows Server 2012 R2 backup.
Several partitions on a system disk have been extended as well as the backup destination partition. After that Windows Server 2012 R2 failed the backup of a system disk with the following error message 0x8004230C. The Server stated it had failed to create
a shared protection point on source volumes and indicated a problem with volume shadow writer. What needs to be done to fix this error and does it have anything to do with partitions being extended?
Vladimir ShipitsynHi,
What destination did you use to do the previous unsuccessful backup? You could try the steps in the article below to troubleshoot errors where the cause is reported by an underlying layer to Windows Server Backup.

Windows Server 2012 R2 - ALL HF's Failing to install as "Does Not Apply to this computer"
Hi,
A general question about hot fix installs.
I have multiple servers that are all Windows 2012 R2. They do not have internet connections, so I have to install the Hotfixes manually. I download the HF's from the ISO download page (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/913086) every month. I collect them and install in a bulk install during a release cycle ( a couple times a year). I just realized that NO HF's have installed since JUNE 2014. Every HF that shows up in WindowsServer2012R2 directory fail to install with a message of "The update is not applicable to your computer". Which is fine if that was true, but.... I get this message for every HF from the ISO's since June 2014. NOT one HF thinks it is applicable to my computer. Could that be the case? No HF's apply to my Server 2012 systems since June of 2014?
This is my system info, and below that is the results from attempting to install 95 HF's.

Hi I have a 4 node Windows server 2012 Hyper-V cluster. When I try to run a cluster validation report, everything else is fine but it fails at validate the Operating System Installation Option step. I did some research but couldn't really find any solution.
Anyone knows how to pass this test? Thanks.
Here's the error I get when run the test:
An error occurred while executing the test.
The operation has failed. An error occurred while getting the operating system installation option for node "server1"Hi JasonLiu2002,
Please post the original error information, the current information is so wide that difficult to determine where may have issue and please offer more information about your
server configuration, you can refer the following article to prepare your cluster environment first.

Virtual Lab: Exploring SQL Server 2012 Integration Services - Setup script fails
I am trying to work through a Lab, but cannot get past the Setup script stage.
The lab is "Exploring SQL Server 2012 Integration Services". I have tried this several times (with new lab instances) and the result is always the same.
I double click the Setup command ... Press 2 ... when the popup dialog appears I press Ok ... the progress bar completes and the messages in the text box seem to indicate everything has completed (last line says "Done"). I click Close as per the
instructions and then the script moves to the "Configure SQL Server" stage.
After a short delay a number of error messages appear: "Could not open a connection ... Login / timeout expired" etc - basically it can't find or can't connect to the server.
I expected these labs to work seamlessly :)
Anyone know what's going wrong here?
Thanks,
LarryI am moving it to SSIS.

Server 2012 R2 Core installation & Remoting from another computer
I have server 2012 R2 Standard Core install in server. I want to move that server to data center . now i want to create virtual machines remotly from my office. is this possible. i have tried enabling remote management but its gives below error.
Akshay PateBy default, a Server Core installation allows remote management. However, the default configuration is based on Active Directory domain membership and a single subnet. This leaves you with two challenges:
In a non-domain environment, your credentials might not match the credentials used, locally, on the Server Core installation. This is an easy one to fix, by either making sure the password for both the 'Administrator' accounts are set to match, or
by creating a secondary account with administrative privileges on the Server Core installation using option 3 in
sconfig.
The Hyper-V Manager requires specific network traffic and permissions. John Howard, a Program Manager on the Hyper-V team has created a free script called
hvremote.wsf, that helps you address issues you might have and find specific connection problems. -
Server 2012 Clustered Hosts - How can I place a Hyper-V Guest in the DMZ?
I have 3 server 2012 hyper v clustered hosts. I've been recently asked to create a VM where external parties will have local admin rights. I've been resisting things for a variety of IMO valid security reasons. What I'm trying to understand is if it would
be possible to build a guest VM that was not part of our domain and put in our firewalls DMZ zone. In this way these folks could be local admins but there's be no connection with the internal network.
In a single host environment if I'm understand things correctly I'd create a external type virtual switch, connect it to a specific physical network card on my host and then connect that card to my switch's DMZ port. But my environment is clustered... does
that mean I'd designate a physical network card on all 3 hosts, connect them to all the same named external virtual switch and plug all 3 in to DMZ ports on my firewall? Could I also instead of plugging all 3 in to DMZ ports on my firewall plug all 3 into
some little rinky dink 4 port gigabit switch and then plug that in to my firewall's dmz port?Hi,
When your guest vm using the external vswitch, it can be considered as the physical host, therefore it has the physical network features, in the DMZ zone we often create the
decided subnet for the security reason. Therefore the decide NIC is needed, it will used for the Hyper-V host VLAN settings.
When considering Hyper-V for server consolidation in a DMZ it is recommended not to run VMs of vastly differing trust levels on the same physical host in production environments
(i.e. do not consolidate all DMZ boxes on one physical host).
Instead, the recommendation is to consolidate all the front-end boxes on one physical server and do the same for the back-end, depending on the workloads.

Server 2012 R2 Team - cannot be teamed as it has a Hyper-V role enabled on it
Hi
I removed a team Server 2012 R2 Server with Hyper-V Roles installed. When I go to recreate the team I don't get any adapters listed even though they are there and have picked up ip addresses. I tried to create it using powershell and get the following
PS C:\Users\trcadmin> new-netlbfoteam -name "Virtual Production Team" -TeamMembers "Production Virtual Network A", "Production Virtual Network B" -TeamingMode SwitchIndependent
new-netlbfoteam : Member 'Production Virtual Network A' cannot be teamed as it has a Hyper-V role enabled on it

"Member 'Production Virtual Network A' cannot be teamed as it has a Hyper-V role enabled on it"
According to this error message , please try to check if the other process occupied the NIC in host .
Also you can try to remove the NIC from device manager and reload it , then please create teaming again .
If it is not the answer please unmark it to continue
Hope this helps

Server 2012 Datacenter - local IIS site opens locally but not from PCs on the domain
This is my first multi-server domain server install on an existing domain. I have a new Server 2012 installed on our domain. This server will host an intranet site, not public facing. I managed to install IIS and have a working ASP/.Net site. I can open
the site while on the server. However, the server denies access to the site from PCs on this domain. I tried changing the security options for the site directory but I can't find the issue.
The directory security objects allowed include:
MYSERVER\IIS_IUSRS
But, "MYSERVER" does not acknowledge the security object:
MYDOMAIN\IIS_IUSRS
What settings have I missed? The default site on port 80 is working locally and from the domain. My site is on port 8080 and is not located under the c:\inetpub folder, where the working default site is located.
Thanks in advance,
KurtUpdate:
I installed SQL Express 2012 and Management Studio 2012 locally on "MYSERVER". Again, I can attach to my instance of SQL locally from this server but using SSMS2012 from my PC on the domain, the SQL instance is not found. This must be related to
the above issue. -
Can FSRM send e-mail notification to Administrator while a user copying a big file(e.g. 100MB) onto server?
Environment:
Windows Server 2012 Standard 64bit
FSRM install and test email ok

ThanksHi,
You can create quotas to limit the space allowed for a volume or folder and generate notifications when the quota limits are approached or exceeded.
