Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Preview Activation/Upgrade

Hello,
Is there a way to activate an installation of Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Preview?  I have tried DISM, and Activating with my product key through Control Panel.
When I run the Get-TargetEditions command it says I am unable to upgrade to anything.  I have Datacenter license.
Currently I mounted my 2012r2dc ISO and it said it was eligible to upgrade from it, and I am currently running that...I will udpate if it works!
Thanks,
Rob

If anyone is looking to upgrade their Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Preview to a production server, it's actually very simple.
1.) have a license for datacenter
2.) have the disk, or ISO
3.) run the setup from windows > install > datacenter with GUI > upgrade
about 20 minutes and 4-5 reboots later, you're up in Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.  Go to CP > System and Security > System > Activate Windows
Done.  Full licensed production version.

  • Windows Media Player on Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Edition

I have a server with Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter edition installed. This server is being used as a terminal server and I needed to have Windows Media Player installed in order to use a certain feature of a program running on the terminal server. After
researching online I found that all I should need to do is install the Desktop Experience feature and Windows Media Player was included in that. After installing the Desktop Experience feature and restarting the server, I was not able to find Windows
Media Player anywhere. I tried the same process on another server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter with the same results.
I was curious as to if this was a Datacenter thing where it was specifically not included with Datacenter edition. I was not able to find any documentation stating that WMP was not included in Datacenter, and everything that I found stated that the feature
sets for Standard and Datacenter were the same, it was just the licensing for them was different.
Curious to see if it would get installed with Desktop Experience on Standard, I spun up a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard VM and installed Desktop Experience and sure enough WMP was installed as well. I then upgraded the Standard VM to Datacenter with a
Datacenter product key and after a restart WMP was still present.
I have also tried this exact same process with Windows Server 2012 (non R2) Datacenter edition and WMP was installed as expected, so it appears that this is only a problem with R2.
My question is, I this "works as designed" and I was just not able to find the documentation to support it or is this a bug?
Update: After doing some more playing around I noticed that if I did a clean install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and then installed the Desktop Experience feature and WMP does get installed. Then I remembered that on the servers that I was trying to
install WMP on and it wasn't working were upgraded from 2012 to 2012 R2. So I created a brand new VM and installed Server 2012 Datacenter (non R2), then upgraded to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and installed Desktop Experience and sure enough, WMP did not
install. So now I really think it is a bug and it is related to the 2012 to 2012 R2 upgrade process.

    Hi Caleb CSG,
    Thanks for your feedback.
I'll feedback a report to Microsoft, and I also recommend you can post this bug in Microsoft connect.

  • Log into a virtual machine on server 2012 r2 datacenter from a windows 8.1 client login

    Hello,
I have set up a VPN on Windows Server 2012 r2 Datacenter using Hyper-V. Everything seems to be functioning ok using the Hyper V platform. I would like to know if it is possible to connect to a virtual machine on the VPN from a Windows 8.1 client using the
widows login and if it is then how to go about it. If I could have some links to tutorials etc I would be greatful. I have not been able to find anything and I have been looking for days. I would really appreciate some assistance. Thanks in advance.
    Ed

    Hi Ed,
I am sorry to say that I am not quite sure of your requirement. Is the Windows Server 2012 R2 computer a host server in Hyper-V? Did you mean that you want to RDP into a Hyper-V VM from a Windows 8.1 client? If yes, you need to allow Remote Desktop Connections
in guest OS. The network adapter type must allow communication with host machine and network discovery mode and the services supporting network discovery mode must be turned on.
    Best regards,

  • Updating Server 2012 R2 DataCenter Offline With WSUSOFFLINE

    Hello!
I Am trying to update a system that is not connected to the Internet and I am not really sure which updates I need.
    Server 2012 r2 datacenter roles:
    1. DC
    2. DHCP
    3. DNS
So far... (will have VMware installed)
I will need to update every server on the system via wsus offline (also the client pc's)
is there a bundle of updates for the O.S. (Server 2012 itself) or can you direct me as to where can I download the updates please?
    thn'x in advance
                                          Omri

    Hi Omri,
essentially you'll have to configure the main WSUS server to sync for whatever products you want to patch (i.e. Server 2012R2, Exchange 2013, etc), and select the update classifications (critical updates, service packs, etc), and then export/import those
    to the disconnected WSUS.
It's not really practical to try and figure out exactly which updates are needed on which machines, using the approach above the clients can then determine, based on their own configuration, which updates are applicable.

  • Server 2012 Datacenter Upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter

    Good Day Everyone,
Ok so my dilemma is that I HAVE to upgrade one of our 2012 Datacenter Servers w/Hyper-V hosting to 2012 R2. The part that troubles me is that I have 3 Production VM's on this server, do I have to migrate these off the
Host Controller before I conduct the upgrade? Can I shut them down and just conduct the upgrade? What is the risk? I have backups of all the VM's, however I do not have another server currently setup to handle the Live Migration as they are full, but I could
make something work if I had to move them before the upgrade.

In terms of whether you can do an in place upgrade, yes you can. We've done it with some of our formerly 2012 datacentre servers, and upgraded them to R2 with the VMs remaining on there and it worked fine. The main issue is that while the upgrade is
taking place on the host server, the VMs will need to be shutdown (or optionally put into a saved state), so as long as you have a long enough maintenance window to allow that then you should be fine.
If the maintenance window is an issue for all or some of the VMs then you'd want to live migrate them to another server so they can continue running while the upgrade is done. Unfortunately it's been a while since we did our upgrades so I can't remember
how long the upgrade process actually took.
Fortunately 2012 VM's are completely compatible with 2012 R2 (but obviously not the reverse), so after the upgrade your VMs will power up and work as before. That said, once complete you'll want to upgrade integration services on all the guests so they gain
the benefits of the R2 host.

  • Can't join clients to domain in Server 2012 R2 Datacenter

I have done the searching.  I have installed 2012 Datacenter 64bit.  No problem.  I installed the Ad Ds role and elevated it to a domain controller.  I installed DHCP and DNS roles.  I now want to join a client computer to this new
domain in the server.  (it's the only domain).  However, nothing I try works.  I get the message:
"An Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for the domain "DGR.MINE" could not be contacted."
Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly.
If the name is correct, click Details for troubleshooting information"
    Details:
The error was:  "This operation returned because th teimout period expired."  (error code 0x000005B4 ERROR_TIMEOUT)
The DNS servers used by this computer for name resolution are not responding.  This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses;  192.168.1.200
Verify that this computer is connected to the network, that these are the correct DNS server IP addresses, and that at least one of the DNS servers is running.
In my 2012 Server the DNS address is set to 192.168.1.200
In my client computer the DNS address is set to 192.168.1.200
The server and the client are both connected to a simple switch, so I'm using straight through Ethernet cables.  I've tried crossover for client to server connections also, but no luck there either.
This should be a simple process.  Can someone with patience give me a step-by-step on setting my server to a domain controller, DNS server, assigning the DNS address, and what else I need to do to allow a client to connect?  Then can I get the
same wonderful help in connecting the client to the server?  I wouldn't ask for such detail, but I'm needing to check to see where I messed up, if indeed I can find where.
    Thanks very much.

Make sure that the machine you are trying to join to your new domain has access to the domain (can ping the IP address of the domain controller) and has set itself to point to the IP address of the domain controller
    as its DNS server.
    Hi, Tim
I can ping my domain controller, but not quite sure about how to set itself to point to the IP address of the domain controller as its DNS server. where do I do it? Thanks in advance.
my sql keep dropping out the domain for some reason, I cant see any domain user account and the location is not entire directory anymore on my sql server even the domain name appears there. so I decide to take it off domain officially and rejoin later, but
failed to rejoin and gives me an error msg just like that.

  • KB2883200 Failing on Server 2012 R2 DataCenter Core

I've been trying to get this update removed from the available update list for a while now. Here are the steps that I've tried:
I've used the .msu standalone installer to install this update. The update is actually installed on the machine according to the KB2883200 msu:
I've tried uninstalling the update using wusa /uninstall /kb:283200 . The uninstall seems to work, but then this error appears:
I've tried using the technique of stopping wuauserv service, removing the windowsupdate.log file and renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder, starting wuauserv service and still have the same outcome. The update is the only one listed and it will
    not install.
Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks!
    -Jake

    Hi,
Since the update could not be uninstalled using the method you mentioned, please also try to uninstall it with the following method to see if the issue persists.
    To remove a Windows update:
    1.  At the command prompt enter expand /f:* <update>.msu c:\test
    2.  Go to c:\test\ and then open <update>.xml using a text editor
    3.  In <update>.xml, replace Install with Remove and then save the file
    4.  At the command prompt enter pkgmgr /n:<update>.xml
    Hope it helps.

  • Hyper-V host server upgrade from Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre

We are about to upgrade our Hyper-V host servers from Server 2008R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre to take advantage of the latest Hyper-V features.
This only concerns the host servers and not the guest VMs running on the hosts (they will be upgraded next year).
This is what is running on our host servers:
    Host 1
    File,print & issuing CA server
    Exchange 2010
    SharePoint 2010
    Quickbooks server
    Domain controller 1
    Offline CRL CA
    Host 2
    SQL 2008
    Forefront TMG 2010
    Domain Controller 2
    Windows 7 client
With this is mind, I have drafted a rough action plan as follows:
Create a list of all file locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
    Document all existing system settings
Gather server information, download drivers, RAID controller and other boot drivers & firmware updates (in case the in-place upgrade fails)
    Test all software media
Copy all VMs onto external data storage (NAS drive)
As part of the upgrade process we will redistribute some hard drive space i.e.
expand them to their new sizes and verify the data integrity of copied VMs by powering up each VM in a test environment
Wipe and adjust the sizes of the host partitions to accommodate the expanded VMs
Perform an in-place upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
    Check EV, services etc
Change the default locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
Upgrade Anti-virus and other system software
    Test the system
Are there any glaring omissions? Does anyone have any tips they can give me?

    Hi Marco,
always do a fresh Installation of your hyper-V Hosts, you could end up doing a lot of Troubleshooting with Drivers,Addons etc.. new Installation ist way faster.
Depending if you have a Cluster or Standalone Servers there are different ways to do it.
When you have installed your 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server you just can Import the VMs from the new Location.
As far as i know VMs with snapshots are not supported, so you have to remove them before doing that move and commit the changes to the vhd files, the VM need to be offline on 2008R2 to do that.
You do not Need to Export the VMs on 2008R2, just copy it, normaly you should have all Files of a VM in one Folder.
A working Backup is always your friend on such Tasks.
When the VMs are running on Hyper-V 2012R2 do not forget to Update the Integration Services.
Make Sure your Servers Hardware are still supported with 2012R2, see Server Catalog and Support Matrix of the Vendor.
And last one, where possible and supported convert the VHDs to VHDx Disks, after testing the first boot of the VM.

  • Upgrading a DC in place from Server 2008 R2 to Server 2012 R2

This is not a question but more of an information post. I've found lots of posts regarding the upgrade of a DC and most say that you should do a clean install and migrate services and then decommission the old server. But I was more interested in an in-place
upgrade of a DC. I only found one post on here that said it was possible, so I gave it a try and it worked perfectly.
Here's what I've got and what I did:
Server 2008 R2 Std (Virtual Server using VMWare)
AD, DHCP, DNS, Certificate Services, Office KMS Host
I did the whole adprep /forestprep /domainprep routine and then installed Server 2012 R2. I selected the upgrade option and then sat back and watched the process. It took about 30 minutes to complete. Once it had installed, I logged in and the only issue
I noticed was that one service hadn't started, and this was just due to the OS waiting to be activated. Once I had done that there were no more errors/issues.
For the Office KMS server I then had to install the new version of KMS host as this has changed for 2012, and this is quite a simple task too. The only issue I have is waiting for the minimum of 5 PC's to activate...

Yes. That is of course a different situation. however, I would still not do it for acouple of reasons, which may or may not apply to you.
I work in a controlled environment (regulatory requirements) and for any change we need QA approval. Allowed downtime is very low. preparing a new DC and then swapping it out means far less downtime and much easier to manage from a QA perspective. Especially
since you can do a lot of acceptance testing up front.
Upgrades always carry the risk of certain things being reset, or changed unknowningly. Scratch installs are always the same. The possibility that after the QA release something may not work as expected can create a huge problem for me. We always prepare
and test installation procedures up front.
That's why we always try to follow best practices and procedures that allow as much pre-configuration as possible, and which allows us to fall back to existing configuration. Timeslots for downtime come around only once per year. And if it causes more than
a couple of hours downtime, only once every couple of years. the amount of sitewide effort involved and the financial risks are massive.
Basically it all boils down to this: is it a problem for you if somethign unexpected happens, do you have the possibility (time) to do much troubleshooting or the time needed to restore backups, and how acceptable is the risk of not being able to finalize
    the proposed changes.
When there are millions of $$ on the line and a schedule slip could cost further hundreds of thousands of dollars ... , and aborting the site upgrade would be a huge failure for the site ... you want stability, predictability, and as few changes
as possible where you don't know the success in advance.

  • Upgrading Cluster To Windows Server 2012 R2

My previous thread was closed so here is a new one.
I have a 4 Hyper-V host failover cluster (R720s) running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, which is connected to a SAN where the CSVs are stored. I have a 5th R720 server on which I have installed Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter from scratch. I have installed
the Hyper-V and Failover Cluster roles on it as well. It is can see the SAN.

    1. To setup the Hyper-V virtual switch on the 5th server, should I join it to the existing Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster and create the virtual switch then? Or should I create the virtual switch on the 5th server, with the same settings as the virtual
switch in the Hyper-V failover cluster, before adding it to the failover cluster?
    2. Can I add the 5th server to the existing Hyper-V cluster, migrate virtual machines from Hyper-V host #1 to the 5th server, install Virtual Guest Services on the virtual machines which have been migrated to the 5th server, drain roles from Hyper-V host
#1 and perform an in-place upgrade on Hyper-V host #1, once the in-place upgrade is complete, fail the roles back to Hyper-V host #1.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,

Just and FYI, it is now called a witness disk.  Yes, it does provide a quorum function from time to time, but with the new dynamic quorum model it is not always used as a quorum.
There are multiple ways to move the VMs from 2012 to 2012 R2.  Here are three.  A little searching of TechNet and you will most likely find some others.
One of the new capabilities is to live migrate the VM from 2012 to 2012 R2.  This involves storage migration across the network, so if you have lots of VMs and not a lot of bandwidth, this can be painful.  But it is the only way to ensure no downtime
of a VM, so it could be used selectively.
If you can take some downtime on the VMs, you can use something like VeeamZip -
    http://www.veeam.com/virtual-machine-backup-solution-free.html
Another method that requires some downtime is to use a step-by-step guide that Microsoft published for moving from 2008 R2 cluster to a 2012 cluster.  Even though you are going 2012 to 2012 R2, it works exactly the same.

  • Server 2012 Essentials Active Directory users

I am in the process of setting up a small business with 40 users and 12 workstations, most of the users will be working in a client site on they workstation and some will have access to anywhere access. I'm aware of essentials limited to 25 users, my question
is can I only create 25 AD accounts or can I create 40, as all 40 users will not require concurrent access at sny given time?

    Hi,
    à
when you say Essentials role experience is included, does this include Remote Anywhere feature in Essentials?
The Windows Server Essentials Experience role is available in Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Windows Server
2012 R2 Datacenter. When you install the Windows Server Essentials Experience role, you can take advantage of all the features that are available to you in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials without the locks and limits enforced in it. Windows Server Essentials
    Experience role enables you to
use the Anywhere Access functionalities on the server (such as Remote Web Access and virtual private networks) to access your server, network computers, and data from remote locations in a highly secure manner. For more details, please refer to following article.

For configuring Anywhere Access functionalities in Windows Server Essentials, please refer to following article

    Essentials
By the way, if only have Windows Server 2012 Essentials, there are two scenarios in which Windows Server 2012
Essentials can be used in environments with more than 25 users. For more details, please refer to following article.
    Using
Windows Server 2012 Essentials with more than 25 users
However, as Cliff and diramoh suggested,
Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard with the Windows Server Essentials Experience role installed will be a better option.
If anything I misunderstand or any update, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
    Hope this helps.
