Server app hangs during Upgrading services

I have upgraded my mac mini server to Mavricks and installed the new Server app.  When I run the Server app, it stops at the stage "Upgrading services" and never ends.  Any idea how to investigate whats going wrong?

Deleting /Library/Server and installing the Server.app solved the issue.

10.6.8 --> 10.9 Upgrade: hangs at Server App "Upgrading services"
Upgraded XServe-Early-2009 to Mavericks OS no problem. Albeit extremely slow (50min install, 2hr cataloging).
Initiating Server for 1st time renders a Hang at "Upgrading services" (left it for 1-1/2hrs).
Then computer claims hard disk is almost full, so I trashed a bunch of crap.
Force Quit (Server install) and Restart shows white screen.
Target FireWire in order to DiskWarrior and Repair Permissions brought XServe back to life.
Downloaded Server App again (for kicks).
2nd attempt at running Server App renders a Hang again at "Upgrading services".
Was I being silly thinking I'd have a flawless Upgrade and get home in time for Turkey ?
Does anybody have any ideas what could be happening ?
Thanks, and have a Happy Thansgiving !!

You were probably foolish to try this before a holiday weekend.  Repeat after me...
Q:  What is the first rule of upgrading OS X Server on a Production Server?
A:  You don't upgrade OS X Server on a Production Server.
Q:  What is the second rule of upgrading OS X Server on a Production Server?
A:  You DO NOT upgrade OS X Server on a Production Server without a backup!
You get the point.  Hopefully, this made you smile a bit.  I feel your pain.
So, first...  Tell me you have a backup of the 10.6.8 boot volume before your started and that you can restore, walk away slowly, and pretend this never happened.
If this is not the case, the next step is to define a list of all services that you had running on the server before attempting the upgrade.  Remember, there are a lot of services removed between 10.6 and 10.9 (Podcast, MySQL, Tomcat, QTSS, etc).  If you were using one of those services, the upgrade process may be halting.  Likewise, if you are using something like mail, there may be a long reindexing process.  So, while the 1 to 1.5 hours sounds very long, it is possible that the server was doing something.  That leads to the next place to look.
What was being reported in the log files.  System log, Open Directory log, and even the all events log can be helpful in tracking down an error or long running process.
Likewise, what does Activity Viewer show during this upgrade.  What process(es) is/are consuming CPU?  Disk I/O?  The assumption is that the server is trying to do something (hopefully).
You are going to need your put on your Sherlock Holmes' deerstalker for this one.  I will also point out that the "out of disk space" error is sounding particularly terrifying.
You may be having a very long Friday.

  • Adobe apps hang after upgrade to Yosemite

  • OSX Lion Server app hangs; dock icon shows incrementing counter

I'm running OSX Lion (10.7.3) on a MacMini.
since yesterday, the following concistenly happens: when I start the server app, it says "connecting to the server" next to the spinning wheel at the bottom right corner of the app window. After a few seconds, the app's dock icon shows a red counter (akin to the "unread counter" of the mail app) which is continuously being incrememted, and the (in)famous colored spinning wheel comes up as well: the server app hangs, and shows up as "Not Responding" in the Activity Monitor.
I've checked the System Diagnostic Reports on the Console window, and it reports the Server app as hanging, followed by a few thousand lines of messages ...
Does anybody know what goes wrong, or better, how to resolve this problem??

I have the exact same issue. I can see from Console.app, that
    opendirectoryd: got error 1100
    Can somebody please help?

  • Server install hangs at calendar services

I performed a fresh install of OSX Server following issues with upgrading to version 4.0.3.  Even with a fresh install, the server hangs on "Preparing Calendar Services," and won't move beyond it.  Any ideas?

    Hi
You may find following the steps outlined in the 'answer' on this thread helps fix your problem.  The step (to kill one process running during the install sequence) is a lot less invasive than doing clean builds and so on.
    Hope it helps.

  • Server.app hanging at install

This is the second time this has gotten stuck like this.
How long does it take to prepare services?

I've not seen a Server.app upgrade go more than a half-hour or so, and freshly-installed OS X Server.app installation should be quick.   Is this a fresh install, or are you upgrading an older OS X Server environment?
If I had a backup or didn't care about the contents of the disk, I might try a reboot and see if restarting allows this installation to continue.   Failing that, clear out /Library/Server and related areas (I'd try this sequence), trash the download of Server.app, and redownload Server.app and try again.  Failing that, wipe and install.

  • Dbua hangs during upgrade from 10.1.0.5 to 10.2.0.1

    Hi All,
I am working on upgrading database from 10.1.0.5 to 10.2.0.1 on RH linux(32-bit).
After completing the basic software installation on a new ORACLE_HOME,
I triggered DBUA for upgrading the db.
DBUA hangs immediately after collecting the database information.
When I checked the processes running on the server, I could see that java process is consuming nearly 100% of the CPU.
I had to kill the process as it was hanging for a long time.
Has anyone come across such an issue?
    Thanks,
    Saj

  • Save app layouts during upgrades/restores?

Has anyone found a way to keep the layout of apps during an upgrade or restore. I spend time creating separate pages for my apps (music on one, games on another... that type of thing) and every time I have to restore or like with yesterdays upgrade, it all disappears.
Is it possible to keep apps in place? If not... Apple can you hear me?!
    Thanks

i had to do a restore from ITunes and EVERYTHING kept its exact place, exact settings everywhere. Same pages, apps in all the same place. I was amazed!

  • OS 10.4.3 install is hanging during upgrade!!!

I'm upgrading from 10.2 to 10.4.3. The installation has hung at "Installing Base System Part 1". The progress bar isn't moving forward and the estimated time remaining is stuck at "1 hour and 15 minutes".
Any ideas on the best way to recover from this? I can't abort and do a clean install because my contacts database is on the system.
    Thanks in advance!

Wait a day to see if it fixes itself. I would not interrupt an installation.
If it doesn't fix itself, get Prosoft Data Rescue and attempt a recovery.

  • ProBook 4520s hangs during upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 due to Ralink RT3090 driver

While upgrading my ProBook 4520s from Windows 7 pro 64 to Windows 10 pro 64 the laptop froze. It appears that it was caused by the Ralink RT3090 wifi chip driver that comes with Windows 10. I have replaced it with another driver and the upgrade worked fine. The procedure I followed was as follows: - Disable the wifi/bluetooth combo in the BIOS settings. - Goto control panel - Windows upgrade and start the listed Windows 10 upgrade- After Windows 10 has been installed, download the Ralink RT3090 driver from: http://mediatek.com/en/downloads1/downloads/pcimpcicbrt2860rt2760rt2890/ fill in a name, email address and the captcha to start the download of the driver package. Note that Mediatek bought Ralink a few years ago so this site is from the manufacturer or the Ralink RT3090 wifi chip used in the laptop. - Unpack the driver package in a folder.- Select Windows key + R, enter msconfig and run it- Select to start Windows 10 in safe mode after the next boot - Select to reboot the PC- When the PC restarts but before Windows 10 starts up, enter the BIOS settings by pressing escape- Enable the wifi/bluetooth combo in the BIOS settings- Save the BIOS settings and exit- Windows will start in safe mode- Install the new driver by running setup.exe in the folder where the driver package was unpacked- Select Windows key + R and enter msconfig and configure to start Windows normally after the next boot- Reboot It appears that the ProBook 4520s can also come with other wifi chips than the Ralink 3090, so this fix might not be suitable for all versions of the ProBook 4520s.

    Thanks for the advice!

  • Where is memory.dmp if server crash during upgrade?

I am updating a server from 2008r2 to 2012, but server keeps crash during upgrade.
I am trying to dig into memory dump and core dump. It usually locate at \windows\memory.dmp if server crash.
Where does the file locate during upgrade?

    Hi,
Based on my experience, the memory dump file will be created by the operating system in its own folder in the MEMORY.DMP
file by default. Windows keeps a list of all the small memory dump files in the %SystemRoot%\Minidump folder if you have choose the “small memory dump” option in the Startup and Recovery page. Of course, you can change the folder location for the memory dump
    files.
If you can access to the page of
Startup and Recovery, you can view the location of the memory dump file.

  • OSX Server 3 Failed to Update Services, Reboot Fails now

I upgraded my Mini Server to Mavericks, then installed the Server 3 upgrade (paid $19.99).  The installation hangs during "Updating Services" and most windows become unresponsive.  Remains in that state for hours.  I lost patience and rebooted from a remote ssh session.  Now the server doesn't reboot.  I restored back to 10.8.5.
Has anyone encountered and resolved this condition?
To be precise, during the Update Services process, the gauge stops at the "d" in Updating... label.

I had the same problem. Finally found a solution that appears to work fine.
Using any free app uninstaller, remove "server" from your applications and remove it and all of its related files.
    Empty the trash.
Restart your Mac holding down the 'shift' key. This puts you in safe mode.
Go to the Apple app store and re-download the "server" app.It will ,et you do this, becuase it cannot find a copy of the app anyplace on your computer.
After downloading and installation, configure the 'server' app following its commands.
Restart as usual .... presto ... works!
You can then re-configure as required.
