Server Disk I/O issue?

I have a server 2008 with 24gb of RAM. On it, there are 5 separate instances; some SQL2008 and some SQL2012.
In my Oracle databases that are in Windows environment, I normally reserve 30% (about 7gb) of RAM for OS. So this is what I'm doing as well for this server.
I allocated 10% of the remaining (about 1.5gb) to the max server memory to each of the default instance, instance 2, 3 and 4.
I allocated 50% of the remaining RAM (11gb++) to the max server memory to instance1 because it has a numerous databases and one particularly huge database (> 5tb) and about 10-15k rows inserted daily.
Question 1: Is that how you allocate RAM? Based on database size and activity?
Question 2: I have a user reporting that when she has bulk insert (1000++ rows) from an 3rd party application; the application hangs and nothing will get inserted. Her database (DBXYZ) is in instance 4. Could this be related
to amount or RAMs allocated to instance 4?
Question 3: I was reading
http://www.sqlskills.com/blogs/paul/how-to-examine-io-subsystem-latencies-from-within-sql-server/ and executed the 2nd query. The read/write latency for
DBXYZ are 111 and 571 respectively. Is that too high?
Question 4: The article mentioned "read and write hot spots are and then drill into a database to see what’s going on, and if nothing out of the ordinary" - what am I suppose to drill on the database and what's out of the ordinary?
Thanks
Ami

Hello Ami,
1. Configuring MAX server memory for SQL Server can be done through article.
http://www.sqlskills.com/blogs/jonathan/how-much-memory-does-my-sql-server-actually-need/
Now it is an article which will give you tentative value which is almost every time correct but for configuring MAX server memory properly for  server having multiple instance you need to look at perfmon counter. Please refer to below article it has
section as 'How to test SQL Server is facing memory crunch there are perfmon counters which you have to look .If you configured memory such that Your target server memory is less than or equal to total server memory and page life expectancy is high with high
buffer cache hit ratio and low checkpoint pages/sec you can say you have configured memory well
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/22316.sql-server-memory-and-troubleshooting.aspx#Does_my_system_have_low_memory
11G memory for Terabyte of data seems less to me .
2.There can be many reasons for that may be blocking may be server is not able to cope with load its difficult to answer unless you provide some stats.
3.If you see Pauls answer for what is value which should be considered as good he said it depends .So please can you check perfmon counters according to this article and it has value which will tell you what is acceptable and what not

I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro(2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need topurchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

The OS disks that are shipped with a particular product
are set up so that tey will only install on that product.
It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
    is all.
This is to prevent people from doing exactly what you
are trying to do.  The license for OSX shipped with any
is only valid for that product.  Also, Snow Leopard,
including Server, is only permitted to be run on one
computer at a time.  Bottom line, unlike Lion, legally
you cannot install the same copy on multiple
computers unless some "family pack" or site license
    is purchased.
Yes, you need to purchase another copy.
The copy of Snow Leopard license is here:

  • My hard disk has mechanical issues, is it possible to recover any of the information?

My iMac is a year and a half old, one day I turned it on and it wouldn't load, I mean, it stayed on the white screen with the apple. I tried everything, nothing happened so I took it for maintenance. They checked it and said the hard disk has mechanical issues, is it possible to save any of the information?
How come, using it such for such a short period of time, the hard disk is already damaged?

Apple isn't known to use the highest quality hard drives. The Seagate in my mid-2011 iMac gets a 2 year warranty when sold on it's own, which in a world of 3-5 year warranties, isn't inspiring.  I got Applecare for that reason.
Your year and a half old iMac has one of the hard drives that either needs to be replaced by Apple (which may be a refurbished drive, if that matters to you) or you can send your iMac to OWC (macsales.com) and have them install a drive. Apple now uses a proprietary connector which has a sensor included on the drive. OWC has a service where they'll work magic to install the drive of your choice with added sensor, so the system works. If you were to install a regular hard drive yourself, the system thinks the hard drive is overheating and runs the fan on full.

Tried to sign in to a couple of websites lately and got this message:

What is going on and how do you fix?

hello, unfortunately this is an issue caused by the website, which uses an intermediary certificate but doesn't properly [https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=https%3A%2F%2Fphp.net%2F&hideResults=on implement a trusted path to the root certificate authority].
in order to work around that you'd have to manually install the missing certificate and trust it to verify websites in firefox: https://ssl-tools.net/certificates/a1e08f9a6a21691dc96bc3b9fa59a7cadd6d4cc4.pem

  • How to add Server disk on the Sidebar?

    Hi,
I use the sidebar alot but I can´t figure out how to put a unmounted server disk in the side (to be opened later - as a shortcut). It will not go there. I can put folders from the disk on the sidebar but not the disk itself. Any ideas?

you can't do it with an unmounted disk directly. make an alias to the mounted disk and put the alias in the sidebar.

  • Can' t read disk label, install issues

can' t read disk label, install issues
i am trying to install solaris 8 on a sparc5 (256mb, 4.2gb,110mhz). i initially installed using the installation disk and it seemed successful as i was able to load the rest of the cds. something went wrong though b/c the system is stuck in a rebooting loop after it finished the last cd. so i went searching and found that i could only have a root partition of no bigger than 1gb. since i used the installation disk, i was not given an option to specify slice sizes. so now, i am trying to redo the install starting from the first disk (1 of 2) and skipping the installation disk. when i do a "boot cdrom" with the 1 of 2 disk, i get the cant read disk label or something about short entry and it will not boot. i am using actual Solaris 8 cds and not downloads. what can i do to get it to boot up from the first disk, or fix the partitioning on the disk?

I am using the offical Solaris 8 Installation 2/02 for SPARC Platform Edition for Sun Computer Systems February 2002, Revision A
Output from the probe-ide command follows:

  • XI Server Disk is full

    Hi All
    I need help in this:
Basis is telling that XI Server disk is full and we cant increase the size anymore, so what are the things we can do to free the space?
    Regards
    Dheeraj Kumar

    Dear Dheeraj,
in your last reply you mention 2 tables. Let's keep things separate...
Per SXMSPHIST: this table does not belong to PI message tables as it does not hold any (part of a) message. Instead a fingerprint of each message is stored to this table for duplicate detection. For reorganization of this table report RSXMB_DELETE_HISTORY is used. This one usually is executed by standard PI house-keeping job SAP_BC_XMB_HIST_DELETE_<client>. See also SAP Note 872388, section 5 - a). Additionally you might want to check the list of [periodical tasks|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwpi71/helpdata/en/cd/20bc3ff6beeb0ce10000000a114084/frameset.htm].
Per SXMSPMAST: From your reply I understand that archiving works fine and you also use report RSXMB_DELETE_ARCHIVED_MESSAGES, however, there are several situations that might cause table SXMSPMAST to increase:
    (a) growth is not due to messages flagged for archiving, but it is caused by messages flagged for deletion (without prior archiving)
    (b) growth is due to messages flagged for archiving, but
(-b1) some of these messages are not archived
(-b2) RSXMB_DELETE_ARCHIVED_MESSAGES is not used correctly such that successfully archived messages are not deleted afterwards
    (c) archiving & deletion is working perfectly fine, but messages remain in SXMSPMAST as the switch deletion procedure has been activated and the threshold for actually performing the switch over to the shadow container has not yet been exceeded
Per (a) and (-b1): walk through section 5 of SAP Note 872388 meticulously.
Per (-b2): check configuration of deletion phase (TCode AOBJ) and / or trigger deletion manually (TCode SARA).
Per (c): check configuration of switch procedure (TCodes SXMS_MONI_DB, SXMS_CONF_SWITCH, SXMS_IECONF).

  • Dual disk Mac mini server - disk issue Disk Utility can't repair

    ML Server.
There are two disks: Server OS HD and Server Mac HD. The Server OS HD only contains the OS and the Apple software update catalog. The Users folder is on the Server Mac HD. When the server is started / running, I go to the Disk utility > verify the Server Mac HD and I am told the Journal needs to be replayed but the volume is read only (it can't be!) and some other errors with regards to headers and bitmaps. DU then stops verifying the disk. I start the Mac mini / Server into recovery mode, try to verify the Server Mac HD. There are no problems - the "disk appears to be okay". I did this several times to same effect! How the heck do I repair the disk?

I see what you mean about live verification.
But didn't realize that the common sensical approach of separating the OS data from non-OS (user) data was an unusual config. Figured, it couldn't have any downside to it or atleast the least drawbacks.... had considered striping etc. but coulnd't see THAT much of a benefit in striping given my particular use / scenario. I have the system backed up to an external Time Machine drive (and will be doing an offsite / online backup of mostly user folders in the near future).
It would be interesting to see the results of fsck check though, like John said.
Anyway this whole thing was initiated because one of the users was getting an error of iTunes library being on a read only volume or on a locked volume. After repairing the Mac HD through Disk Utility in recovery mode (evethough no errors were found, I simply repaired it), that issue seemed to have resolved. So eventhough DU reported no errors, there must have been some small error - atleast it seems that way!
Thanks to both for the help!

  • Is there a way to avoid having a content library on a site server when the Distribution Point role is not installed on that server (disk cost issue)?

    Hello,
I don't think it is possible, but my goal is to start a discussion about content libraries and maybe suggest something for a future release or version of Configuration Manager.
Actually, based on Configuration Manager Technet documentation, Configuration Manager creates a content library on each site server and on each distribution point.
Often, when designing the architecture, people will offload the distribution point role from the site server to an external server (and add the role to other servers too for redundancy). They could also do the same for the Management Point role, but this
is not related to content library. The idea is to save the site server from having to deal with clients for software distribution (applications, software updates, OS, etc.), this is especially true for organizations having a large number of clients and/or
primary site servers involved in a hierarchy. Doing so will allow more resources on the site server to deal with the database and also replication in the case of a hierarchy.
When doing that, you still have to maintain a content library on the site server and the thing is this library will usually become huge, especially for organizations having more than 1000 applications (add also OS images to this). Will the content library
on the site server become as huge as the one for a distribution point having a copy of all content? I guess the answer is yes.
I know that Pull distribution points will help offloading the task from the site server to distribute content to distribution points, but, correct me if I'm wrong, you still have to maintain a content library on the site server when using them, and they
will not make the content library smaller on the site server. Also, I don't like the fact that you lose the rate limits feature with Pull DPs, but this is another story.
Storage cost is high and in this scenario, it hurts to have to pay this cost for a content library not used by the clients, but only to distribute content to DPs.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the key component here is Distribution Manager on the site server; this is the one which has to maintain a content library to do its job.
It would be nice if we could have a way to elect a specific distribution point (not on the site server) as the Distribution Manager for a site, that main DP would hold a copy of all content by default, but would be used to distribute content to other DPs
and avoid the content library on the site server. Said differently, the Distribution Manager component would become a site system role that could be transferred outside the site server.
Tnx for comments, answers or suggestions.
    Patrick

There is no way to avoid that the contentlib will be placed on the site server.
I don‘t agree that storage cost is high. It might be true for fast storage, but that‘s not needed for it.

  • Windows server 2012 R2 clustering issue with disks

we have a two node cluster
we have volumes configurred on both the clusters.we are using  EVA san storage.
    Data(C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1)
    Logs(C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2)
i am able to change/move Clustered disk drives from owner node A to Owner node B.I cannot see the clustered drives on both active/passive nodes.
i am also not able to view the volumes on node b in the windows explorer. Can someone please tell me how to look at the volumes once we move between the drives on the cluster.
    Thank you
    lucky

Since you are showing us that you have configured Cluster Shared Volumes, that means there are no volumes to be seen in Windows Explorer.  This is expected behavior.  When you create Cluster Shared Volumes, the cluster software creates reparse
or mount points for the volumes.  That is what the C:\ClusterStorage\Volumex is - it is pointing to the actual volume.  When you want to use storage, you need to point to C:\ClusterStorage\Volumex and whatever subdirectory you create for the location.
CSVs are not meant to be used by all applications.  They were initially designed for Hyper-V.  But that is not how you would set up you cluster if you want to offer a something like a regular file share.

  • Drivers for Windows Server 2008 and HDD issues

Recently I have had the hard drive with my OS fail. After replacing the hard drive and reinstalling windows server 2008 I seem to have run into a few issues with drivers.  After insalling Windows, I had 3 items in my device manager that did not install properly. I was able to get the driver for the LAN port to work but I have not gotten the driver for "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and "SM Bus Controller". After a little research, I believe the video card is a Radeon HD4350. With that information I still have been unable toinstlal the correct drivers for either of these items. I've tried several drivers listed on the drivers support page on HP's website but all fo them return the same error about not finding the correct Operating System. The link to the driver I used originally on my previous installation seems to not be valid any longer.
Also I can't seem to access the two additoinal hard drives (connected by sata). They were used with the previous installation of windows with no issues. They appear in the device manager but do not show up under My Computer. A removeable drive does show up that I'm not sure what it is. Previously I had used software to mirror one of the drives onto the other as to prevent losing data if a drive would fail. Is one of the above drives causing the issue with not being able to access the drives or did the software used before cause the problem?
Any help on these issues is greatly appreciated.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    OK.
I can't help you with the drives then.  That is out of my realm of knowledge.  If they are marked healthy and active in the disk management utility, then that is all I know that they should be indicated.
    As for the graphics driver...
Download and install this free file utility.
    http://www.7-zip.org/
After you install 7-zip, right click on the graphics driver file and select 7-zip from the list of options.
Select 7-zip to Extract to: and let it extract the file into a folder.  I let it extract to the file name of the folder.
Then just follow the rest of my instructions to install the driver.
Of course you will first browse to where 7-zip has extracted the folder to, and proceed from there.

  • How to check server hardware and OS issue without offline DB server

    Hi Experts,
For checking hardware issue, do we have any way to check server hardware and OS performance without offline server?
any way we could rule out bad hardware causing the problem without offline server?
    Thanks
    Jim

I think your answer depends on the nature of the hardware issue you think you may be having, whose hardware you have, and the OS your are running on that hardware. Such as on UNIX there are several error logs that record errors related to the system including detected hardware issues and you have numerous utilities like vmstat and iostat that can be used to measure performance. Some disk units linclude their own diagnostics modules you can run.
If you really want help I think you have to be a lot more specific about the problem you are facing.

  • Osx desktop vs osx server disk fragmentation?

does anyone know if 10.5 server is any different than 10.5 desktop regarding disk fragmentation? if server is any better then desktop at minimizing fragmentation, i might just go there...
    thanks-

while i never rule out the possibility of hardware problems, in my experiences, hard disk failures have generally had similar symptoms... the symptoms tend to be cyclic retrys for reading, i can here the retries, and the computer has interrupted responsiveness... another type of symptom i've seen with disks that are failing is corrupted files (usually unreadable with a disk error message, reading or writing) poping up... the disks where i've had fragmentation issues, it has always been long continuous reads, but the computer doesn't have any halting in responsiveness... it's mostly slugishness when accessing large files, like starting programs...
although i don't rule out the possibility of a disk problem, the symptoms are matching the later case at the moment... of course, when i eventually try something to address fragmetnation, that should help either eliminate the problem or rule out fragmentation and suggest the latent hardware problem... like the saying goes, there are 2 kinds of hard drives, those that have failed and those that are going to fail...
regarding the suns, they were servers and ran software as well... we had x-windows terminals as well as macs and windoz computers running software on the suns (mostly thru x-windows)... they also were nfs servers for our sun workstations on peoples desks... although we didn't have the bloatware that is ubiquitous these days, we had a fair amout of large simulation software for finite element analysis, circuit simulation like pspice, database software, etc... some people wrote and compiled software on them... they were also our mail servers and our gateways to the rest of the network... i seem to recall framemaker in the mix for a brief time... (not sure what ever happened to that company...) we had 3 servers and about 130 to 140 people in my working area. yes, many of those people were doing lesser activities like email and not running simulation software... but it is still nothing to sneeze at...
although this was toward the start of "the web" much of what is done on computers today had already existed before that... it was just not well known... before there was "chat", unix had "talk"... i've had an "internet" based email since 1985... there were image viewers... i recall seeing the 1st streaming mpegs sometime in the early 90's. of course the internet did not have the bandwith so the streaming mpeg was very slow... but i digress...
one of the most intersting developments i thought was really hypercard on the mac... it was the prototype for the web... it had graphics, scripting, networking access for transfering and displaying information, rudimentary animation, etc.... if it had been multiplatform and an open protocol instead of apple only, that might have been the model for the web... well, i've digressed again...
regarding disk fragmentation, the basic unix partitioning scheme really reduces the disk fragementation issue... that is to format with 3 partitions, 1 for the OS, 1 for the user files, and most importantly 1 for /var for all the temp files that get created and swap space for virtual memory... since the files which come and go and change size a lot are on the /var partition any fragementation from those would be restriced to that partition... since it is changing of files that causes the fragmentation, the temp files which change more freqently often drive the fragementation issue... the occasional reboots tend to clear out the temp files in /var... so with this scheme, the majority of the fragmentation is limited to /var, which is cleared and much of fragmentation isn't normally persisant across reboots...
at least that is my experience... i recognize that others may have different opinions or experiences... thanks for the trip down memory lane... i miss the days when there were standards for how the internet worked before microsoft arrived on the internet and made all these competing non-standard protocols... but that is another topic...

  • Rebooted Hyper V Server and seeing some issues please help

I think it was shared from the host. Those screenshots are from the host not in a VM. I think the previous tech created a virtual drive perhaps even spanned it across multiple ones and had that as the share but I can't find the volume or something. I'm new to this network so I am unsure how it was setup.

Hey everyone. I rebooted out Windows 2012 Hyper V server to install some ram (which didnt go well because the power supply apparently was overused so I took it back out and booted the server back up until a new power supply comes in) and there appear to be some issues/changes after the reboots.First let me say I am not 100% up to speed with current Hyper V capabilities and such I have been using VMware the past couple years but am in a environment with hyper v now.
Before rebooting I noticed in the Disk Management section that there were a TON of disks reflected there. Many of them if not half of them were blue colored and didnt have a drive letter accociated with them and had names like {234234n-2njnkj32-njn3krjn23k-kjsdjkfnsj} I believe these were like VHDX disks if I am not mistaken however I am not really sure why they showed like...
