Server Groups - "Give Preference" vs "Only Use"

Hi All,
I'm working on a project where we want to have batches of reports being scheduled to specific server groups. Currently when these batches are run, the reports use the "first available server" option in CMC. This is problematic as the reports are just being scheduled to whatever server has the least load at the time, so on demand reports just have to wait until the long batches are over before they can be scheduled.
In CMC, there are two options for setting up server groups:
"Give preference to servers belonging to the selected group"
"Only use servers belonging to the selected group"
Our fix was to schedule these batches to server groups so that some of the servers would be available for on demand reporting. Since our goal is to have distinct server groups to help with load balance, we went with the "Only use" option. The functionality of this is pretty clear: Even if the needed servers (AJS) are disabled, stopped, or busy, the reports will still be scheduled to this server group. However, the functionality regarding the "Give preference" option is unclear.
My question is: Under what conditions would BusinessObjects switch to using a server not included in the server group if the "Give preference" option were used?
As far as documentation goes, the best answer I found was that the server would switch when the needed servers are "not available". What exactly does this mean?
When the server is disabled? (Assuming yes, this would be good for us)
When the server is stopped? (Assuming yes, this would be good for us)
When the server is busy? (No idea..., if yes, this would be bad)
If the server switches when the specified server is busy, then we just run into the same issue we had before, so we wouldn't want to do that. Does anyone have any insight into how this works so we can figure out which option to go with?
Thanks everyone!
Valentin Lazar

First reports will try to use the servers in the group, if they are not available, then it will go other servers. It may be disabled, or stopped.

  • BOXI3.1 How to dedicate server groups to select Webi reports?

We have a select number of Webi reports that we would like to always run on a specific server group which consists of a number of WebIntelligenceProcessingServer(s). I can get this to work fine by 1) setting up the server group 2) Specifying that server group in the "Default Settings" of a Webi report using the CMC 3) scheduling the report and viewing the latest instance. However I can find no way of stopping all other Webi reports in the system from running on that same server group.
Anyone know how to set a server group up so that it only processes specific reports and not ever report in the entire BO XI repository?
    Thanks,
    George

I have set up a little test on my BOE 3.1 SP3 system and have found the following:
2 server group:  SDKNO and SDKYES
4 WEBI Server (2 ADP and 2 WPS)
Have given SDKNO a set of WEBI servers and have given SDKYES the other WEBI servers
Created 2 user group SDKNO and SDKYES
Have set SDKNO group to have NO acess to SDKYES and full control to SDKNO have set SDKYES group with full control to SDKYES and No Access to SDKNO
Have created and schedlued webi reports as a user that should have NO access to the SDKNO server group and reports will still use the SDKNO servers.
I have gone one step further and set security directly to the servers as opposed to the server group and still a member of the "SDKNO" group can use the "SDKYES" servers.
Apperantly there does not seem to be a way to isolate servers based on group membership.
What does this mean to you?
Basically, if you want to use serve groups and you want to ensure that no "other reports" use any available server then all reports MUST be assigen to a only use a specific server group as, if this is not set, the "use first avaialble" option will come into affect and trump any server group security settings that have been set up.

  • Group policy Preferences server 2008 and windows 7

Hi I have been struggling with an issue with group policy preferences for a while now with regard to pushing out printers to windows 7 (32/64 bit) Machines. I have two DC servers one is 2008 and the other is 2008 r2. I have setup the group policies on the
2008 server as it is the only one i am allowed to access regularly to do this.
Basically here is my problem. I have created multiple GPO's to send out printers from out print server to classrooms across the school district I work for, I have a mix of xp and windows 7 machines. I have the server setup with both 32 and 64bit drivers
for all printers on that server, we have a mix of oki and hp and ricoh. I know all the connections work and the drivers work well, however when I push them out using the group policy, the windows 7 machines don't install the printers. The xp machines do this
perfectly well when I install the client side extensions patch, but they just will not pull down on the 7 machines unless i install the printer first manually, then delete it and then run gpupdate. In that instance it will work, but obviously i don't want
to have to go round thousands of computers doing this manually.
Just as a side note, each classroom has its own user account and its own printer.
If anyone has any advice as to how i can go about resolving this issue i would greatly appreciate it, this has been a problem i have been researching and trying to fix since January.......

    Hi,
    >>The xp machines do this perfectly well when I install the client side extensions patch, but they just will not pull down on the 7 machines unless i install the
printer first manually, then delete it and then run gpupdate.
Before going further, we can run command
gpresult/h gpreport.html with admin privileges to collect group policy result on the troubled Windows 7 clients to check the issue. Besides, we can also check event logs in Event Viewer to see if some related error events were logged.
Besides, I want to confirm if we have disabled
Point and Print Restrictions under both User Configuration and Computer Configuration. To have a consistent experience, it’s recommended that we disable the policy setting in both locations if we are dealing with mixed-level clients.

  • Extreme slow login on Server 2008 R2 TS at Group Policy Preferences - Printers

I see references to this problem everywhere, going back to 2010.  However I'm not finding any real answers.
I have Group Policy Preferences installing printers to Terminal Server Users.  I have one policy that applies to 4 terminal servers.  One of them is a 2008 R2, the others are 2003 x64.  Only for the 2008 R2 server, after all of the printers
show (in event viewer) as successfully loaded, there is a long hang.  I have many printers applied to me, and that results in my load time being the longest of all at about 3 minutes.  I am an administrator on the machine.  Others have the exact
same problem, just a bit less pronounced depending on the number of printers.
The policy preference is set to UPDATE, so it's not loading the driver... again, the printer is already successfully applied.
I've tried setting UAC to "Never" on the server.  No effect.  I've played with the Point and Print policy at both computer and user level, finally just setting both to disabled, but prior to that setting them to Enabled with the "do
not show warning" on both settings.  No effect (which makes sense since that is for non-admins and I am having this problem as an admin).
My logging pasted below shows this same thing in all cases.
Is there an answer to this that I am just not finding?

  • Does using Group Policy Preferences to deploy printers require the print driver to be pre-installed?

I'm trying to prepare our school system for Windows 7 (we currently use XP).  I would like to use the new Group Policy Preferences method of deploying printers.  I pushed out the XP client side extensions through WSUS.  In my test environment, I added the shared printer in group policy preferences.  My XP machine had the printers show up automatically, but my Windows 7 machine did not.  I realized that I had previously connected a printer of the same type to my XP machine before and the drivers were already installed.  To test this theory, I manually connected the shared printers to the Windows 7 machine, deleted them, then logged off and back on.  Now the printers are showing up from group policy.  My question is does using group policy preferences to deploy printers require the print driver to be pre-installed?  If not, then what am I doing wrong?  If so, is there a way to work around this?  Thanks for your help.
EDIT:  To clarify, I am using the share method in GPP.  This is the error message I get in the event log:
The user 'PRINTERNAME' preference item in the 'win7 printer test {946461A1-27F8-406F-A0B3-0A1A05AF34F6}' Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070bcb The specified printer driver was not found on the system and needs to be downloaded.' This error was suppressed.

This link have a description of resolution:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725938.aspx
    Open the GPMC.
Open the GPO where the printer connections are deployed, and navigate to Computer Configuration, Policies, Administrative Templates, Control
    Panel, and thenPrinters.
    Note
The Point and Print Restrictions setting can also be found under User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Printers.
This policy is ignored by Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, but is enforced by earlier editions of Windows including Windows XP with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, and Windows Server 2008. We recommend that you change
this policy setting in both locations so that all down-level clients have a consistent experience.
Right-click Point and Print Restrictions, and then click Properties.
    Click Enabled.
    Clear the following check boxes:
Users can only point and print to these servers
Users can only point and print to machines in their forest
In the When installing drivers for a new connection box, select Do not show warning or elevation prompt.
Scroll down, and in the When updating drivers for an existing connection box, select Show warning only.
    Click OK.

  • Group Policy "Restricted Groups" (local groups) using group policy preferences

I was recently tasked a solution with creating a group policy to manage RDP user access to a set of Active Directory computer objects.
Part of the  solution was to create a policy so that this would only apply a specific security group(users) to a specific set of Active Directory computer objects within the OU to which it was applied so that other machines
and/or user accounts in this OU remain un affected by this policy.
The policy was to be able to include multiple sets of Security groups(users) for the associated machines isolating those security groups(users) to only their sets of Active Directory computer objects.
Reduce the requirement to create multiple group policies to apply different "Local Group"/"Restricted groups" management for computer objects in the domain.
I thouhgt about using System based policies and creating different WMI filters to target sets of AD Computer objects, but came to the conclusion this would not help due to the limited of WMI quries I would be able to create for a standard
    Image.
So I then thought about group policy preferences and came up with the solution
I created a new Group policy and created a new item for the local group, in this instance but not limited to "Remote Desktop users (built-in)" and added the security group(users).  In my case I did not need to use the "delete
all member users" or "delete all member groups" as I wanted other groups in this local group for the computer objects to remain intact.
Then what I did is set the "item-level-target" setting from "the common tab" on the GPP and set it to the security group which containd the AD computer objects the user accounts required access to.  I then did a couple of standard
tests to confirm the local security group(users) appeared only on the machine in the item level target security group and applied to no other machines in the outside of SOM.
So with this in place, if I needed to create any other entries for different groups and access to specific machines all I need to do is create a new GPP item within this policy.
Being mindful that system policies settings if applied to same OU will take preceedence over GPP settings....
Thought I would just share this in-case anyone else has had similar requests/thoughts and or has other methods that they have used that they would like to share.
I am not sure either on the limit of entries that GPP have either so if anyone does know please post and possible links?
I have struggled to find an answer, however it could be that I am not asking the right question!

    good sharing...

I have a local LAN DNS server. My preferences point to that server. Why does dig give me 8.8.8.8 as my DNS server?
Something is/was modifying my DNS preferences to 8.8.8.8 It seems to be pointed correctly now (at my local LAN DNS server), but why was it pointed at 8.8.8.8 before? I never want it pointed to 8.8.8.8

You've hit the nail on the head Ben.  For point to point communications, the IP addresses should be fixed, therefore there is no need for DNS.  If a DNS is configured, the NIC (Network Interface Card) drivers will try to contact it.
In my test system, I need DNS for the test computer, but I am communicating with a dedicated Spectrum Analyzer over TCP/IP.  So I added a second NIC.  The main NIC is configured for DNS and all that jazz.  The second NIC (plugged into PCI slot) is configured with a hard coded address, no DNS, no Gateway, nothing else.  I connect that NIC to the spectrum analyzer using a crossover cable.  The analyzer is configured with a hard coded address also.  Now my computer can get on our company network, and the spectrum analyzer is isolated from the network, so it can't catch any viruses, etc., and it still talks to the computer.  When using a configuration such as this, it is best to use a dedicated address for the 2nd NIC and spectrum analyzer in the range of 192.168.100.0 to 254

I have the solution! Well it at least worked for me. This is the response I got from Apple, Can you please try the following steps towards fixing your audio issue, and report back with your results?
    1. Open the application Audio Midi Setup (located in Applications : Utilities)
    2. Select the Output Tab for the current output device
    3. Select the Configure Speakers option
    4. Select the Multichannel tab
    5. Change the setting to Stereo Now mine was set to stereo but the left channel wasn't showing left. re-clicking on stereo reloaded the settings and after clicking apply it worked.

  • Executing a Job via Web Services using a Server Group?

When executing a job from Designer or from the Management Console you have the option to select a specific job server or a server group.
But when executing a job via Web Services it uses the first job server with which the repository was associated (i.e. the first job server listed in AL_MACHINE_INFO).
Is there a way to get the job to execute using a server group instead simply choosing the first job server in the list?
Note: We are using FIM to execute the jobs via web services and don't have access to additional parameters.

    Joe
Here is the where you can change the server group/job server.
    - After you add the Batch/real Time job as a webservice.
    - Go to the Webservice Batch Job Attribute and from the drop down choose the "Enable job Attributes" and hit apply.
    - After this if you use the WSDL URL http://<Data Services Web Server>:<Web server Port>/DataServices/servlet/webservices?ver=2.0&wsdlxml
    - You will see the job attributes that you can change based on the allowed parameters mentioned in the documentation.
The batch job or real time job is published without the job parameters by default. Once you enable the job attributes, remove and re publish the batch job as a web service. The application making the call to this webservice should be able to read the WSDL generated by Data services and pickup all the input and output parameters of the method.
Refer to the Data Services Integrator guide (Chapter 3 : pages 25 - 33 ) to get the exact parameter values permitted via Data Services jobs called via web services.
    Hope this helps!
    Thanks & Regards

  • Oracle can only use 2GB on Windwos XP Server

    Hi all,
Is the following statement true or false:
"If the Oracle database runs on the Windows XP server (without access to the Datacenter version of Windows), the single-process architecture limits the Oracle database server to about 1.75GB of RAM in total. So, if we have 8GB of RAM on the server, users connected to Oracle can use only about 2GB of it."
    Thanks in advance.

This was why I posted in the first place... Like I said, it is not just copied (not verbatim, at least not from the edition I read), and it is taken out of context.
In this case, the chapter talks about how to develop oracle applications, the mentioned section (p 10) has an example of how not to by ignoring how oracle works and hence using more connections than really needed - it is not a chapter about Windows memory architecture.
According to the link I mentioned above, even XP has ability to use larger-memory techniques e.g. a larger user address space (3GB). But who or which note, doc, etc. is correct? Like Tom always pushes towards, you should not just swallow the bait, instead try to find out what it means yourself, build your own understanding.
