Setting default sound card to card 0
Hi,
After following Arch Wiki for configuring Alsa I added the following to my /etc/asound.conf:
efaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.pcm.device 0
defaults.ctl.card 0
This works on my current session. However, sometimes when I reboot my computer, my primary sound card that my speakers are connected to, becomes card 1 and I have to update this setting to get my sound card working. Also, noticed that Chromium always look for card 0. That is, if my primary sound card is detected as card 1, I won't be able to play videos on youtube, neither using Flash or HTML 5.
Any idea how I can dictate my system to set my primary sound card as card 0?

If both soundcards use different modules you can use e.g.
#/etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-cmipci
or
#/etc/modprobe.de/sound.conf
options snd-hda-intel index=0
options snd-cmipci index=1
which both do the same.
If both soundcards use the same module you have to do something like
options snd-hda-intel index=0,1 id=SB,HDMI
(See modinfo of your sound module for suitable parameters like id, vid, pid, etc)

I hear sound, but i cant found to make it the default output.
I've tried to change /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf :
defaults.ctl.card 0
defaults.pcm.card 0
to
defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
and I've tried to make a .asoundrc file in my home :
pcm.!default {
type hw
card PCH
ctl.!default {
type hw
card PCH
doesn't work either, what am i doing wrong ?
Thanks in advance,Ok, after a lot of try-and-error-and-reboot, i found that the default card is correctly defined ("aplay test.wav" works), but others applications (vlc, chromium) still did not produce sound.
Apparently, the problem came from pulsaudio, after i removed it, everything seems to work (sound is back on vlc and chromium), not sure what the problem with pulseaudio was. -
How to set default sound output
How do I set the default sound output? I'm outputting to a USB converter but Mavericks switches to internal speakers on its own with no warning, most times in the middle of a song. Doesn't matter whether I'm using iTunes or a 3rd party music playback app.
I too have the same setup as you and use my streamer with all of my Apple devices. I've found it necessary to turn off Bluetooth in the devices I don't want to connect to when they are all within range of one another. If you don't need Bluetooth on your Mac turn it off. I've also found that if I'm connected to my Mac and a call comes in to my iPhone that the phone will take priority.

How to set default sound card?
Every time I start up my mac, I have to go the system pref -> sound and select my firewire sound card.
My question is there a way to select a sound card and make it default so I don't have to do this procedure over and over again?
Your help is appreciated!
Yosemite Away!I suspect the reason is that the system sound card is selected before FW is even active. But it would be better to ask the maker of the FW card if it's possible to change this so the setting is sustained through restarts.

[SOLVED] default sound card changed
Hello all,
Been struggling with my arch64 and XFCE over the past couple of days. my arch32 gnome 2.x screamed, it was great.
Anyway, when I first installed Arch this week, I had sound(alsamixer reported SB Audigy 2 ZS [SB0350] as default). I then installed XFCE, updated, installed vlc, etc, and I had sound(alsamixer reported SB Audigy 2 ZS [SB0350] as default. I've been mucking around trying to get Arch to automount my DVD, and not sure what happened, but when I rebooted just now, I have no sound.
Now when I go into alsamixer, my default sound device is marked as ATI R6xx HDMI, with one S/PDIF connection MM.
What could have happened that made Arch/XFCE change my default sound card? I've check the forums, and didn't find anything. Then again, I've been living in forums for the past 4 days trying to solve various issues, I could have missed something, or gotten confused.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: RTFM'ed (read the wiki, which was the only place I didn't look)
Last edited by nixIT (2011-05-19 23:31:04)Hi, Masutu
Pulseaudio is in my daemon array:
DAEMONS=(@syslog-ng !network crond dbus @alsa @pulseaudio)
But what you've said about some program calling pulse and crashing things makes sense. How could I "correctly configure" pulse? What do you suggest?
My /etc/asound.conf is here:
# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
type pulse
fallback "sysdefault"
hint {
show on
description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
ctl.!default {
type pulse
fallback "sysdefault"
# vim:set ft=alsaconf:
It seems pretty the same what is written in some sites about pulse.
In a past time (with other computer), I just removed pulse completely. But now there is a warning about dependencies: gnome-settings-daemon and gnome-control-center. And I don't know how removing these Gnome packages will affect the window manager. -
[Solved] No sound with ALSA (change default sound card)
I installed Arch on another laptop and I am unable to get sound working.
# lspci | grep -i audio
00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Device 9840
00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] FCH Azalia Controller (rev 02)
Two devices show up in alsamixer. The first (the default, I assume) shows up only an S/PDIF button that I can toggle. If I select the other sound card, I can change volume normally.
I followed this solution in the wiki with no success.
How can I make the second sound card the default one?

Yes, that is what I meant; F6 did not list them both when I use your options. I must have done something wrong the first time, because now it does.

Games do not detect 740m, default to intel 4600 card (HP Envy Laptop)
If I uninstall the HD card, computer defaults to VGA... Will not run without the Intel Card, nor will the nVidia panel even open without it being activated. Then games only detect the Integrated Card, so there is no way to run the computer with just the nVidia card...
Skyrim, Mass Effect 1... None of my games detect the nVidia card.
I have tried fiddling with the nVidia panel forcing activation of the 740m. Games still do not recognize the card. Tried reinstalling everything - nothing.
I see this problem all over the internet, what worries me is that I see no solutions whatsoever.

How do I set up a PCI-DNET card as master with A-B DNI as slave?
I'm trying to communicate with an Allen Bradley PLC through DeviceNet. I have a NI PCI-DNet card in my computer, and an Allen-Bradley 1761-NET-DNI interface between my PLC and the DeviceNet network. Does anyone know how to set up my National Instruments card as the Master of my PLC/DNI combination? Thanks in advance for the help.
MarkHi Mark:
The PCI-DNET card should set itself up as the master by default. As a matter of fact it should take more work to get it be the slave than to get it to be the master. Is this not what you are experiencing? Is there some sort of Allen-Bradley software that you have installed that is not allowing the NI board to be the master?
The DNET Manual states on page 4-8 that NI-DNET assumes that it is the only master in your DeviceNet system.

Could not detect Sound Blaster Audio Card on xp sp2 Sys
I have Audigy Platinum and trying to install to a recently re-installed windows xp sp2 system. On my previous install everything was working fine and now I am looking to install the newest drivers and the error comes up [color="#ff3300">"could not detect Sound Blaster Audio Card on system". The strange thing is windows recognizes the card and will install it's drivers, but when I go to install the latest driver update I get the error. In addition, I also tried to run the install from my original disk.
I also?un-installed the devices showing? in the windows device manager, then tried and the same error, I even tried it in safe mode. Any ideas? Thanks and Advance,MikelYes i think the real lesson here is not to buy creative,. i have the same problem with their junky card, so i guess ill just have to take buisness somewhere else. if you all do the same perhaps the threat of them going out of buisness will have them deal with their problems. if not atleast we saved others the headache of learning this lesson.

Set default iCal alert sound?
iCal allows the user to specify how long it will be between an event and a default alarm. Is it also possible to specify what the default sound will be for an alarm? I find myself having to change the sound on every alarm I set, which is pretty annoying. Thanks in advance for replies.
I just discovered that iCal or Calendar uses the first (alphabetical order) sound it finds in your sound folder
The default is Bass because this is the first one
but if you add any other one that starts with the letter A, iCal will use that one
I added the sound Agogo and now all my alerts use Agogo
You need to copy the sound you want to be used in your User Sounds folder, no need to change the System Sound folder
or add an A in front of the name of your favorite one -
Setup could not detect any Sound Blaster Audigy card on your system
Hi from Barcelona!
I've a Soun Blaster Audigy card (Model: SB0090)
I tried to install the Audigy software and drivers from the original product CD but Setup was unable to find Augigy hardware and halted the installation!
"Setup could not detect any Sound Blaster card on your system. Please ensure that your Sound Blaster hardware is properly installed before running this Setup program"
By the way. Manually the sound drivers can be installed working only front speakers of the 5. Creative system
I tried a clean installation of Windows XP and Windows 2000 PRO (reformatted the hard dri've) but Audigy install CD still could not find Audigy hardware.
I've changed the card to a different PCI slot with the same results!!! Damaged?
What is happening? I need a solution!! Many users have this problem to with other Sound Blaster cards and models...ADSLNEW wrote:
It seems to be an important BUG of Creative Sound Blaster Audigy cards related with EEPROM!!!
Yes, indeed, that is my theory as well. After much ****hing and on-line research, it seems that this problem has been around since 2002. From Creative Labs point of view, it appears they view this as "pilot error" -- the user has installed the card in a system that is not fully compliant with the latest standards -- specifically Microsofts ACPI (configuration and power management). A wide variety of configurations and/or actions seem to cause the PCI subsystem ID in the Audigy EEPROM to be erroneously overwritten -- including certain older motherboards, certain older PCI cards, and perhaps other actions.
Once the subsystem ID in the EEPROM is overwritten and has garbage information, many or all of the Creative applications cease working and various sound problems can arise. Attempts to reinstall the driver or update to the latest driver consistently fail becuase of the dreaded "Setup could not detect any Sound Blaster Audigy card in your system..." error message.
There appear to be four fixes:
) Get a replacement Audigy card from Creative, but <EM>only</EM> after you perform their prescribed troubleshooting steps to prove that the card is indeed the source of the problem. Apparently, the steps include installing the card in another PC. Apparently, Creative in Europe is more willing to replace your card than Creative in the US. It's up to Creative Labs whether or not they issue you an RMA ("Return Material Authorization").
However, this fix will fail if the root causes of the EEPROM error are not corrected. Apparently, Creative Tech Support isn't always a foolproof source of guidance, so the burden is on you. The root cause MUST be corrected before the new card is installed, or the same problem will happen all over again. Eliminating the root cause may involve replacing your motherboard, replacing other PCI cards, or manual configuration (disabling ACPI).
2) Reprogramming the EEPROM. This is for advanced PC owners only, because it involves desoldering the EEPROM, programming it, and resoldering (and even lifting some pins to prevent reprogramming). There are instructions on how to do this posted in the German Creative Labs discussion board, by a Russian (!). I have links for those who are interested.
3) Removing the Creative drivers and software (using Clean Sweep procedures and third party utilities), updating again using Windows XP SP2, then physically moving the card to different PCI slots (multiple times if necessary), until ACPI Bios writes the proper information into the EEPROM. You can then reload the drivers.
Again, the root causes of the problem must be removed or your fix will only be temporary (a day or two). This solution also seems to be very dependent on the specifics of your system (motherboard, PCI cards, etc.).
4) Some people have had success in by-passing the step in the driver installation process where they check for the Audigy card subsystem ID, using a utility called CTZAPxx on the installation CD. Then then manually install each of the applications they need to use.
5) Use the open source driver from the kX Project (http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/index.php). This driver (and associated utilities) does not depend on the detailed configuration of the card (i.e. they don't check subsystem ID) and appear to work fine even with cards with corrupted EEPROM.
This driver is aimed primarily at computer music applications, and opens up the on-card signal processing capabilities. The downside is that the Audigy 2 ZS does not have all of it's capabilities supported <EM>yet </EM>(e.g. Dolby Digital decoding, S/PIF passthrough, possibly some game sound features, THX, 24-bit recording, support for Hyperthreading CPUs, etc.). But scanning over the discussion boards, the user community seems to be MUCH happier with the performance and support associated with these drivers than with Creative's.
This is the direction I'm going. I'm not a big gamer and I don't really care about the latest in home theater audio performance. Basic 5. surround sound is all I care about, and I'm much more interested in computer music capabilities.
I have also lost faith in Creative Labs as a vendor to provide the support I want and need going forward. Just imagine if the Creative Labs were running the Space Shuttle program :smileysurprised:. -
why is apple requiring me to enter a gift card, credit card or itunes card in order to set up a new account
My assumption is because you aren't setting the account properly. You can't set up an Apple ID and then try to use it without a credit card unless you follow a very specific procedure which you obviously did not do.
You have to try to download a free app first - before you set up the ID - and then create the ID from the prompts. You set the ID up first and it doesn't work that way. You will have to either enter a credit card now and then delete it later, or start all over again with a new ID. If you start all over again, you have to sign out of the current ID in Settings>Store - tap your ID and sign out. You will also need another email address because you already associated your email address with the first ID.
This explains how to set up an Apple ID/iTunes account without a credit card.

As I said, this is my assumption, if there is something else going on here, post back with something more detailed other than "why is Apple requiring ...." We can't possibly know why you can't do without some more information to go on. -

Why is my debit card being charged for iTunes purchases when my iTunes account is set up with my Amex card?
Login to the account on iTunes and under payment info, select none for the credit card. iTunes is supposed to use gift cards and store credit over credit cards but it doesn't.

Set firefox sound to new default sound device - quirky behavior windows 8
My 64bit Win8 machine will direct sound to the default speakers as output but when I try to toggle the sound to a different devices such as e.g. 'headphones' the sound goes out. I am using the notification icons area on my PC to switch the sound output device which works acceptably in other browsers.
The exception I've noticed at least once on a TED talk video was if the sound/movie clip was loaded from the URL directly instead of as embedded in a webpage, the sound device selector native to the OS works fine.I think that you need to close and restart Firefox after making changes to the default sound device to make Firefox pick up the change. Otherwise it might not work properly, especially when a built-in (HTML5) media player is used and not a plugin.
