Setting library-wide volume level

How do you set the volume for all the music in your library? You know -- so one song doesn't come in louder or quieter than the previous one?

itunes preferences to playback. click sound check.

  • Setting default volume level.

    I have a 2nd Gen Nano which I am using in my car. I have an OEM adapter which connects to the iPod through the dock adapter and allows the car's stereo controls to operate the iPod. (The stereo thinks it's a really big CD changer.)
    My problem is that the sound level from the iPod is significantly lower than that from either the radio or the actual CD changer, so when I have finished listening to the iPod I have to be careful and remember to crank the volume way down or else the radio blasts when I select a different source.
    Looking at the iPod I have made sure that the volume limit is set to maximum, and I am confident that I don't have a EU crippled unit since the sound level through the earbuds is plenty loud even at half volume and keeps going up from there.
    The thing is that when it first wakes up the volume level is always set to 50% on the slider. I cannot manually change the volume level when connected to the car because when it's connected to the adapter the iPod's controls don't work (besides it is mounted in a fairly inaccessible location), but I don't even know if doing so would help since it communicates with the stereo through the dock connector.
    My question is: Does the iPod's volume control have any effect on the signal level out through the dock connector, and if so is there a way to permanently adjust the default volume level the unit uses when it starts up? What I'd like to do is set the default volume level on the iPod to, say, 75% or whatever will balance it with the other source input levels that the car stereo uses. I tried adjusting the volume manually and then sliding the lock switch to 'Lock' but it didn't work.
    Thanks in advance.

    This sounds like the problem that I'm experiencing and <a href-"http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2694517#2694517">aske d about a couple of days ago. The sound level resets to 50% after shutdown.
    I tried setting the levels in Audio MIDI Set Up as suggested above, but that hasn't changed anything.
    In answer to B_web, I am running my external speakers through the headphone jack.
    So, any other suggestions?

  • Setting individual volume levels per song

    If i set my song volume levels individually through itunes. When i transfer them to my iphone will they be set at that level?
    Also if the songs are already on my iphone and i change each a volume level on one particular song through itunes. When i plug in my iphone to itunes will itunes recognize that i have changed that songs volume level and correct it on my iphone?

    1. Yes. Sound Check is supposed to do as you suggest, but it mangles the sound sometimes. I avoid it for this reason.
    2. Yes. Usually the tracks for a given album are balanced well against each other. If, for example, you know a particular album is quiet, you can select all tracks in the album and boost their volume.
    I'm sure iVolume works well for lots of people. My experience wasn't good. I used iVolume over two years ago and it didn't work with my protected music bought from the iTunes Store. I used iVolume's recommended setting at the time (can't remember what it was), and it made everything much more quiet than the protected music. Perhaps its algorithm or default is better now. If you use it, test it on a few tracks and then play them next to your protected tracks...

  • Setting default volume level for Java Desktop

    Hello,
    I am running Sol 10 11/06 for sparc. How do I permanently set the default volume level for the Java desktop? If I change the volume manually and "save settings" on logoff, the saved setting is not saved after a reboot, after which I have to set it again.
    Thank you......

    Annoying, isn't it?
    Unfortunately the only thing you can do is lower your system volume before opening those pages. The volume could be controlled by the Web page author but most are clueless.

  • Fluctuating volume levels during a track

    'Ello. Has anyone else ever experienced the volume levels changing during a song? The only way I can describe it is it feels like someone's playing with the volume, lowering it for half a second before returning it to it's previous level. It only does it on a handful of tracks, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this? Could it be an earphone/headphone problem? Any help would be much appreciated. Rich

    I have Windows 8.1 and this only happens with Spotify, not Songza, Amazon Cloud Player, or Pandora. It started happening just in the last week and I have no membory of downloading any new software.  I've played with disabling/enabling on Spotify:- View > Hardware Acceleration- Properties> Music Quality> High Quality Streaming- Advanced Settigns> Crossfade tracks- Advanced Settigns> Set the same volume level for all tracks On my PC's Sound settings I checked "Do nothing" in Communications and I tried different options with Beats, which was included with my laptop. Sound does NOT fluctuate using the app on my phone, so I can only assume it's either my PC or the PC application. I believe I've tried everything listed in this topic, but posting again in a last ditch effort before I have to end my subscription :(

  • How can a consistent volume level be set for all the songs in an iTunes library?

    The volume of the songs in my iTunes library varies significantly when played on my iPod.  Is there any way of setting a consistent/equal volume for the songs in my library so that I don't have to change the volume level when listening to my iPod?

    I have used the $30 iVolume utility to equalize my iTunes song's volume for several years and it works well. I just wish it worked for music videos.  iVolume is available on the Mac  App Store, or you can try before you buy at the developer's site: http://www.mani.de/en/ivolume/index.html

  • When I set all the tracks in the latest Garageband to the same volume levels and save, when I open the file again they've changed back to a previous setting?

    I'm trying to mix a recording in the latest 2014 version of Garageband, but when I set all the tracks in the latest Garageband to the same volume levels and save, when I open the file again they've changed back to a previous setting? Does anyone know why it changes even after saving the file?
    Below is my iMac settings.

    Do you have a back up?
    If not you're into using file recovery software like  File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
    There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

  • Which EQ setting + volume level is the most 'clear'?

    Hi
    Just got an iPod Classic this week (my first ever Apple Product other than iTunes). It's replacing a 30G player from another company from 2006 (ran out of room) that had really good sound. With a simple pair of JVC Marshmallow earbuds, the right mid-volume and the right EQ setting, I could hear all the musical instruments clearly and somewhat equally and the singer's voice was clear as well, as if we were in the same room.
    I'd like to recreate this with my iPod Classic but I've noticed the EQ isn't customizable (unless I'm missing something) and that with some of the iPod's EQ settings I can hear instruments clearly but the vocals sound muffled, almost like they're dubbed from another source. But there's other settings (Vocal) where the singer comes in clear but the instruments are muffled in that dubbed way. I've tried Flat and Off but results with those vary.
    My old player's EQ was set at a reverse of the iPod's Rock setting, lowest bars on the outside and highest in the middle. Is it possible to load an EQ setting like that from iTunes? If you can download a game, can you download an EQ setting?
    AND is there a certain volume level where that 'same room' clarity shines through? Anything lower than 11 out of 20 on my old player and it would lose that clarity (anything higher than 13/20 was too loud). 12 was just right. If that makes any sense.
    Or could it have something to do with how a song is ripped from a CD? Which is what my music collection started out as.
    I'm hoping someone can help and shed some light on this for me. I got it engraved so I can't exactly return it. haha
    tangcameo

    Most audiophiles, switch off the iPod Classic EQ as it is crap, most probably designed by some team who like bubble-gum music. but if you must use, create a custom EQ presets
    read this forum

    But try not to boost up greater than zero db, the new iPod audio chipset don't like it, your music will sound like something from some Oriental Opera, of course, unless you like the metallic tin highs.

  • Changing OSX default volume setting to a higher level in sound preferences

    When I change the default volume setting to a higher level in sound preferences within OSX, it is back at the lower level at the next listening session the following time I use iTunes on my Mac Mini. Within System Preferences there is a section that lets you "choose a device for sound output" but the only choice I have is "line-out" and under the "port" heading there is only "built-in output"--no other choices are shown. I have external speakers attached which I like to use for listening to music as I work. What is the problem? Why won't the higher volume I set remain? Also, shouldn't more than one choice be shown for sound output?

  • Setting/Controlling volume levels

    I'd like to know what you guys do for volume levels.
    I have the system volume, iTunes volume, and my Bose volume knob.
    Basically, rather than worry about three volumes, I set my system volume and my iTunes volume to max, then just controll the overall volume with my Bose volume pod. This seems to work great.
    I don't want to spend my day worrying about 3 different volume levels:)
    Bryan

    That sounds like a good idea. No pun intended. I don't like to set my sound set up to max, because I think it does not give you the best sound. Whenever I use source sound without amp to max (like a walkman), I notice that receiver or a sound device has noise or static to it. I like to set the source to medium and play with receiver or speakers for adjusting volume.

  • Is there any "mechanical" helper to get my volume levels the same?

    I create playlists from ratings,(and comments),- and albums have different volume levels. As I always use my ipod to go to sleep, it is very destructive, to not be able to hear my music one minute, and then have it much too loud the next.
    Is there ANYTHING, free or chargeable, physical or software, that can help me get my itunes library to all the same volume level. My problem is agrivated by the fact that I do have some shared downloads, and also someone put my vynils onto cd for me, but at a lower volume.
    I might add, that I'm still a learner on the computer. I have been told to change the soundcheck -playback -preferences -itunes. I have tried it, ticked and unticked - it doesn't make any difference.
    I'd be very gratefull for some advice. Please HELP, this has been going on for ages. Thank you, in anticipation.

    I'm SO very grateful for your help! Have downloaded it, and have started to use it, but havn't listened to results yet.(just about to) THANKYOU SO MUCH.
    Thankyou so much again, this could be the end of a long (negative) era!
    A bit later: have listened to a little, seems a huge amount better. will update when used properley.
    I'm anticipating some being way out. Though it says it can overcome old changed volume levels, is it best in your opinion, to put them back to original setting?
    Many Best Wishes Vonnie

  • Why does Find not see a visible file at Volume level?

    I recently searched (Find) my iMac's internal hard drive for a file that I knew I had created ("MAC addresses.doc"), but it found no such file, either by File Name or Contents. I had to try to remember where I filed it, and then I found it in [Macintosh HD] > Library > Documentation > User Guides and Information. Searching (Find) again at the level of any folder within the volume, even Library, finds the file immediately, both by File Name and Content. The file has no unusual properties, and its Permissions allow everyone to at least Read it. This occurs even after repairing permissions of the volume. Why should the OS be unable to Find this file for me when searched on the volume name? Should I change some setting/preference in order to allow that (all files to be found at Volume level)?

    Thanks Frank,
    SYSTEM_PARAMETER is a table owned by X.  If I qualify the select statement by adding the owner it works, but of course I do not want to do that.  Here is the DDL for creating SYSTEM_PARAMETER:
    create table SYSTEM_PARAMETER
      name         VARCHAR2(256) not null,
      date_value   DATE,
      number_value NUMBER,
      string_value VARCHAR2(512),
      comments     VARCHAR2(512)
    alter table SYSTEM_PARAMETER add constraint PK_SYSTEM_PARAMETER primary key (NAME);
    Again, if I rewrite the procedure to the following (only difference is the red X.), it works:
    create or replace  procedure ztm_get_debug_level is
      vc_pkg_name  system_parameter.name%TYPE := 'DEBUG_LEVEL_PKG_BASE_KEYS';
      vn_error     services.debug_log_level.debug_level_id%TYPE := 30;
      v_debugLevel   system_parameter.number_value%TYPE;
      function get_owner return varchar2 is
        cursor c1 is
        select owner from all_tables where table_name = 'SYSTEM_PARAMETER';
        v_Ret_Val VARCHAR2(30);
      BEGIN
        OPEN C1;
        FETCH C1 INTO v_Ret_Val;
        CLOSE C1;
        RETURN v_Ret_Val;
      END;
    begin
      DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('AAAA - ' || get_owner);
      select s.number_value
      into   v_debugLevel
      from   X.system_parameter  s
      where  s.name = vc_pkg_name;
      DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('BBBB');
    exception
      when no_data_found then
        NULL;
      when others then
       DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('p_get_debug_level.WHEN OTHERS');
       raise;
    end;
    This procedure exists in 4 other environments where there are no issues.  It can't be a privileges issue as the table is owned by user X and as you can see by the lookup (which was added for debug) against ALL_TABLES the owner is clearly X.  So, why can X not select from it's own table unless we include the owner?
    Thanks,
    Thomas

  • Limited Volume Level on Nano

    I have my iTunes library stored on an external drive due to my library size and my limited internal disk space on my Windows XP laptop. Fast forward to now where for months I puzzled over the volume level on my Nano. I can gradually increase the volume on the Nano to 50% level. But when I go above 50%, the volume remains unchanged to the max. After repeat visits to the Apple Genius Bar (including one where they replaced my Nano with a refurbished 4G) I kept having the same results. Finally I got someone at Apple (his name is Mickey) who was able to help uncover that the volume limitation is due to my library living on the external drive. We tested it by copying a CD to the internal drive, syncing it to the Nano, and the volume increased to a deafening level (I do like it loud.) Any ideas about how to fix this? Mickey suggested copying part of my library (for syncing purposes only) to my internal drive and that should resolve the volume issue, but then I'm always dragging and dropping. BTW, the volume level is fine with iTunes itself.
    Thanks!
    -David

    The test was to rip the CD with the external drive disconnected. iTunes set up a new library on the internal drive and the volume increased from 0 to 100%. I then repeated the same steps with the external drive and the volume increased from 0 to 50% and would not increase any further as I turned the click wheel. I even dragged and dropped the newly ripped file from my internal drive to the external drive and the same thing happened as if I ripped it directly to the external drive.
    As for the info tab and the level, do you mean info -> options tab? After ripping, the default volume adjustment is set to the default of 50%. I then increase it to the max. Strange thing is when I plug my headphones into the laptop and listen to the songs directly within iTunes, all is well....

  • Headphone and Internal Speaker Volume Levels

    I saw a topic about this earlier, but it has become locked, so I thought I would post another to see if anyone has any information about it. Until recently, I have been able to set my headphone volume and internal speaker volume at different levels. In other words, I can set the speakers to a certain volume, plug in my headphones, set the headphones to a different volume, then unplug the headphones and the volume changes back to what it was before I plugged in the headphones. I don't know exactly when it started happening, but I can no longer set these at two separate levels. I have seen that other people are having this problem, so I know it isn't just something stupid that i am doing. Anyone know why this is happening, or what I can do about it? Any help would be much appreciated.

    Assuming that you're not listening to songs that have been imported at very low level, the next thing to do is a full Restore. A Restore will remove everything form your iPod, reset it and then put back onto the iPod only what is in your iTunes library. So if you have items that are not in your library (and therfore on the computer) you need to sort that out first.
    I believe it will also reset your user data in any Apps you use. There is a backup method for this, but I'm not sure how it works as I've never tried it.
    If that doesn't work, there must be a hardware issue, which means booking it in for service.

  • Inconsistent volume levels from song to song

    Hi guys. I've lurked here for the past week now and I haven't seen this complaint so I figured I would ask. I'm getting what seems to be inconsistent volume levels from song to song. On one song 70% volume seems loud but on the next I can kick the volume all the way up and it's not as loud. I've noticed this on the phone and through my truck which has a hardwired Ipod adapter.
    I don't have the problem with the same library of tunes on my Gen V Ipod so I'm likened to believe it's a phone issue.
    The problem is very noticable on my motorcycle as you have to find a sweet spot for the music to be loud enough to hear but not so loud as to hurt your ears. Last night on an hour ride it seemed as if some songs came through loud and clear and others were barely audible over the bike.
    So anyone else? Other than this I have the typical problems with the low speaker/ headset volume and the Ipod software crashing when running Safari but I expected these things with a first gen product. Overall the phone is great and it's user interface makes my Ipod feel archaic. I'd put money on Apple releasing an Ipod in the near future with cover-flow and multitouch.

    Thanks guys... That was indeed the problem. In fact I remember fiddling with this setting a couple days after buying the phone and I turned it on to see what it did. Not having immediately noticed any difference I completely forgot about the setting and didn't think to check it.
    Problem solved.
