Setting static leases through DHCP (1841)

Interested in how to set up static leases through my DHCP pool on a Cisco 1841.
The DHCP pool is currently set as 14.18.16.0, sharing 14.18.16.20-120 with the submask of 255.255.255.0.
I'd like to have x clients with specific IPs (based on their MAC?), the leases should never expire.

You need to capture user MAC address to configure STATIC DHCP Mapping. IMO this is provided for users who want to get the same IP Address but too lazy to hardcode (manually configure in their PC interface) it in their PC :)

Watch out when user change PC, some users (though with NO disability) expect the IP Address to follow them when they change PC :)

Network Printer - Cannot Acquire a Lease through DHCP

TL;DR: Changed ISP and printer does not/cannot acquire a lease from new modem/router. I haver an Hp LaserJet 4050 with an HP 615n 100BASE-T NIC. This setup would acquire a lease and work flawlessly through an AT&T 2WIRE router. No special setup was needed other than enabling DHCP/BOOTP on the printer. I then moved to an area not serviced by AT&T. My new provider, CableOne, provided me with an Arris Touchstone Gateway. All of the computers on my LAN will acquire leases without issue, but the printer will not. I've looked at every setting available through my gateway's web interface and can find no setting that will permit the printer to acquire a lease or would otherwise cause/fix this situation. I have reset the printer settings to factory defaults. The TCP/IP section of the configuration settings on the printer will show the default IP of 192.0.0.192; the status will show "55 - BOOTP/DHCP IN PROGRESS" The printer's NIC is communicating, as Wireshark will show IGMP messages from the printer to a couple of different multicast addresses. Any hints in diagnosing are appreciated. If further info is needed, please let me know.

Hello sabretooth04, thanks for your reply. I thought I had provided most of that information, but here goes: Detailed problem description - see original post - too detailed to repeat. OS of computer: I have seven different OSs on this LAN, including OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Arch Linux, Gentoo, slackware, and windows Vista, SP2. Connection is ethernet. Make and model of modem: Make: Arris; Model: Touchstone Data Gateway. Error messages: none. Printer has been powered off/on multiple times to no avail. The printer is sending DHCP Discover requests (multiple) but not receiving a DHCP offer from the router/modem. So the question is, what is wrong with the network/router/moden that it will not respond to the DHCP Request?

It might not be logical at first sight to mix dynamic and static addresses. But as always with such strange features, there are cases where this comes-in handy.

In OES/SLes, you can still have static leases, but not within a range of
dynamic addresses like you could with Netware. Consequently, you also
can't change a dynamic lease to a static one.

Unable to set Static IP in Wicd

Wicd will get an IP just fine if I let it do DHCP. When I try and set my static IP it acts like its connecting and then just says not connected. The wicd .log has:
Putting interface down
Releasing DHCP leases...
Setting false IP...
Flushing the routing table...
Putting interface up...
Setting static IP : X.X.X.164
Setting default gateway : X.X.X.1
Connecting thread exiting.
Sending connection attempt result Success
X's to not show my IP. I entered the same information into the Properties tab that I would in windows or that I do in rc.conf and resolv.conf that lets me set a static ip without using wicd. There is 2 lines that I dont have that I have left blank and wondering it this is why its not working because I dont know what goes in them. DNS domain and Search domain(i have no idea what these 2 are looking for). I tried entering the server names for DNS 1 and 2 but that didnt work. I tried just ph.cox.net and cox.net in the DNS Domain field and that didnt work. So now im stumped and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

Well that makes me feel better, I did leave them blank but it would not connect. I actually tried googles DNS in DNS 1 and 2 and received the same results as with my proper ISP's DNS.
I did not try Global DNS Servers way that you described, I was entering in the information in the properties tab. I will go ahead and try this method.
Im correct on my gateway, I run an ipcop box as my router and set everything in my house with static IP's so I have the DNS and gateway information correct.

I am not sure if it matters but I am using wicd-gtk to set everything and not doing it through the terminal with just wicd or wicd curses.

Jumpstart through DHCP and dhcp interface files.

I am jumpstarting a sparc machine through dhcp.
after the installation starts dhcp is running in adopt mode (/sbin/dhcpagent -a).
But its not creating primary dhcp.interface files (ex:/etc/dhcp.hme0). where as primary ethernet interface files are getting created through sysidtool.

Firstly, you will need an ssh client, I assume your school computer is a Windows box. You may find that it already has something like PuTTY installed. Alternatively there are some Java web based clients you can use like this one, although I've never used any so I can't comment on their quality.
At the server end (your home) you will need to make sure that your PC has a static DHCP lease so it always has the same IP on your LAN, that your NAT is forwarding TCP port 22 to that IP, and your firewall is allowing incoming connections on that port. You will also need to know your public IP (the one that's visible on the internet). Most home broadband connections have a dynamic IP so you may want to investigate some kind of dynamic DNS service like No-IP or DynDNS. Routers often have support for these so they will automatically update if your IP changes, best to check your router first so you can choose one it supports.
Be aware that there are security considerations here, ssh is pretty secure but nothing can be guaranteed 100% bulletproof. Some kind of virtual private network (VPN) may be a better idea but you probably won't be able to get that set up at school, they can be a pain at the best of times.

Set Static IP address on Mac clients

Hi,
I'm trying to change the IP address on a mac client at startup time to a different value and to be Static type. I need to do it via the command line. I've researched and found out that 'networksetup -setmanual ...' and 'ipconfig set en0 MANUAL ...' would do it, but the 'networksetup' command is not available unless I have ARD installed and 'ipconfig' is not recommended for use other than testing and debug.
Another option I was looking at is editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist and then doing 'changeip ...' command.
Do you know if there are any other commands that will allow me to change an ip address via the command line, set it to Static/Manual and preferably do it without a reboot?

when I use static IP in my jwc_properties.ini it is never picked up, it still uses DHCP. The part where I have configured IP looks like this:

[SOLVED] No network when setting static IP on boot

When I have:
eth0="eth0 192.168.1.73 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
set in rc.conf at boot, I get no network. I can't even ping machines on the LAN. When I have
eth0="dhcp"
in rc.conf at boot, the network works fine. What I can't figure out is why, if I boot with the dhcp line in rc.conf, then change that line to read
eth0="eth0 192.168.1.73 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
and execute
/etc/rc.d/network restart
the network works fine and I get what I want: a static IP. How can I set it so I get my desired IP on boot?

I'm a recent Arch convert (after seven years of Slackware, Debian and CentOS). I have a few questions about details that I didn't quite get in the Wiki section.
1) static IP
The sample line in rc.conf is explicit enough, so this one is no problem. On the other hand, there are some diverging hints concerning the configuration in /etc/hosts. Let's say I configured a server with a static IP of 192.168.1.1/255·255.255.0. In that case, is it correct to have an /etc/hosts that looks like this?
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.1 buildbox.localdomain buildbox
Or is it:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain buildbox.localdomain localhost buildbox
2) DHCP
If I configure my Ethernet interface with DHCP, what do I have to put in /etc/hosts? Only the localhost line?

Yeah, you don't really need to inject anything into /etc/hosts
I'd say this is partially wrong. When I only keep the default /etc/hosts, I get a warning message when XFCE starts up: it complains that there's no hostname defined.
Finally, I'm using this configuration:
127.0.0.1 buildbox.local buildbox
127.0.0.1 localhost.local localhost
Note: The double 127.0.0.1 is only for better readability.
But I just notice something else, that puzzles me a bit. Here's what ifconfig returns, as expected:

Unable to set static IP to wireless printer Officejet 6600

First sorry my poor english, still keep trying We do have an HP Officjet 6600 Printer for about 6 months.This printer has USB and WLAN, but no LAN port. We used the printer until 2 weeks ago. At that time, **bleep** starts ...As long as we used the printer, he was connected via Automated WLAN (DHCP) and everything worked fine.The printer was connected to our WLAN Modem which assigned the DHCP IP Adress automatically.Then, our Internet provider updated our cable modem, which is also our WLAN router, and since that time, the printer does not work anymore. He always shows an error after booting, and told us to restart the printer, and all lamps of the printer are continously blinking. There is no way to access the printer menus on the printer.After a long and intensiv internet research, i found out that the cable modem is responsible for the printer error!It looks like the WLAN DHCP Server of the cable modem sends DHCP messages, which the printer cannot use correctly. If I shut down the modem (with the integrated WLAN router), the printer boots normal without an error, but I cannot use him becaused he is not connected to WLAN as because the modem is offline.So I wanted to set the printer to not use DHCP by assigning static IP to the printer. But this does not work! I tried 10 times or more to assign static IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS-Server, no way, the printer always show "IP not set" (same for the others). Can anybody tell me why I'm not able to set static IP, Gateway etc. to the printer?!Thanks for every suggestion.

Since you now have a new cable modem, let's start with a more basic approach. Please use the following document for instruction to reset the printer to your new network settings: Connecting the Printer After Changing Your Wireless Network. You may notice, when you open the link, that the full title mentions the Photosmart B209a, the instructions presented apply to your printer to so please don't be alarmed. I hope this helps.

I set my cRIO from 'DHCP' to 'link local' and lost contact with it.
I changed the setting at the placed labeled "2" to link local only, then I think I hit save at "3". Then poof, I had no network contact with my cRIO.
I tried;
Hitting the reset button
Opening a closing MAX
Going to safe mode
Throwing the Reset IP switch
Power cycling the cRIO
Running cat 5 cable directly from the Host to my target
None of it worked, and I have no contact with my cRIO.
This is what MAX looks like now. How can I fix this?

Make sure to disable the firewall on your computer.

Note specifically that one option is to read the console out from the target VIA the serial port will a null modem cable during boot and it will indicate what IP the system is using.

WES610N unfindable after setting Static IP

I have here a WES610N wireless bridge.
The default IP is the 169.254.1.250 with the subnet mask 255.255.0.0.
I can set the IP from DHCP to Static. As long as I don't change the IP, or make out of the 250 a 251, it still works.
But I need to set it to the static IP 10.X.X.X with the subnet mask 255.255.255.X
As soon as I change that and the device reboots, I can't reach the device anymore, only by doing a reset - getting me where I've been in the beginning.
It makes no difference if I set up the wireless connection before... well, after I can't because I can't reach the device. But according to the lamp - it seems still fo at least try to establish a connection. But I couldn't find the device even with a IP scanner.
The one I have now is already a replaced product from Cisco after having those issues before - so I guess it's supposed to work fine, but how I said - after the restart it's useless.
I've put already hours into that thing and it just doesn't seem to work right.
Is there anyone that can help?

Reset and power cycle the WES610N. Access the WES610N ui and then the WES610N’s ip address to static. Once the settings have been saved, then the computer (that is hardwired to the WES610N) will no longer be able to ping the WES610N since the computer’s ip address is something like 169.254.1.XX. In order for the computer to ping the bridge then you also need to assign a static ip address on your computer which is by the way in the same range as the ip address of the WES610N.

Sure we can set a static IP (actually we are going to reserve an IP address - even better). But first, please mark the post that helped you solve the problem as "Accepted Solution".
Connect to the wireless router by typing the IP address of the wireless router in the address field of your browser, then click Enter. 192.168.1.1 is the default IP address of the wireless router. The wireless router will prompt you to enter the user name of 'admin' and the password. The default password is 'password'.
See the procedure on page 8-16 of this < http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/forums/replypage/board-id/Networking/message-id/NetGear%20'RangeMax'%20... > document to reserve and IP address for your printer.
You will need the MAC address of your printer (this is on the Network Config Page you printed from the front panel of the printer).
(Although I am employed by HP, I am speaking for myself and not for HP)

Just got back to this thread after trying what you suggested re new install program.
Months ago, when originally tried to install new C4500, spent weekend, literally 4hrs on a Sat and 4hrs the following Sun with HP support on the phone trying to get C4500 wireless to work.
Finally downloaded a new install program and after installing that and making other numerous setup adjustments, which I cant remember, it worked (the only saving grace for the time spent) for a while.
But for the sake of trying, we did put in the original disk, just like page 4 (or our original paper manual) instructed (per your last post).
The disk loaded and the program did its thing and then get...
"A newer version fo this software is alredy installe on you HP HPPhotosmare C4500 series computer."
So clicked 'finish'.
Then loaded...
PS_AIO_04_C4500_USW_Full_Win_enu_120_210_NB.exe
...which we thougth was the new installer program which we downloaded those months ago (same one you suggested).
Started the '4 step' process.
Got to 'step 3' and it connected to printer with usb cable.
Along the way got message from 'network diagnostics'...
"The PC and the printer are connected to different networks(192.168.1.0 and 192.168.0.0). They must be connected to the same network. This can happen when you use the manufacturer's default network name (SSID) and another nearby network is using the same name.
The gateway address of the printer does not match the network to which the printer is connected. Reconfigure the setting on your printer to match."
Tried changing ip addresses at network settings, but no help.
Clicked on disregard and proceed.
Started 'Network diagnostics' and got...
HPPhotoshopEssential 'install' bar window.
Either way, disk or new install program, get pop-up window with message...
'The feature you are tryong to use is on a CD-ROM or tother removabledisk that inot available. Insert the 'HPPyotosmartEsesential' disk and click OK."
Moved HP .msi and .cab files to same directory with ...NB.exe file.
Install went ahead, and then needed 'setup.exe'.
Opened setup.exe at disk and install went ahead.
Installed latext updated 'HP Solution Center'.
It showed both the C4500usb and wireless, but still wireless not 'connected'.
Ran diagnostics and got same 'diagnostics' message as above.
Made sure hardware enabled etc.
How to fix ?

Static coming through computer line out, PLEK500

I have three of these working just fine, in this configuration:
#1 tied to cable modem
#2 tied to ethernet port of a macbook pro
#3 tied to a Roku box
#4 is meant to serve the Ethernet port on the Mac Pro tower in my home office. Unfortunately, upon installing it I get a huge amount of audio static coming through the Line Out jack on the computer, or the speakers if not using the Line Out (which I connect to a stereo receiver). The static correlates clearly to network load; if I run a test on speedtest.net, pushing a big amount of data up and down, the static is nearly continuous. If I'm just working locally on the word processor it's intermittent. So something is interacting between the Ethernet connection and the other electronics of the computer.
What is going on here? I can't use it like this.

I would suggest you try using another Ethernet cord for isolation. Make sure as well that the Powerline's firmware is upto date for better performance.
