Setting up a second Airport network

Is it possible to use the ethernet network switch on Airport extreme to plug in another Airport device to create multiple wireless networks, or do I have to have separate cable modems to set up a whole new network?

A few things:
Configure each base station connected to the Ethernet switch as a Bridge, i.e., Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Make sure that you provide sufficient channel separation between each base station to prevent Wi-Fi interference between wireless networks. This is especially important for base stations that are near each other.
If you want all of the wireless networks to have the same Network Name or SSID, then please check out this Apple Support article on setting up a roaming network.

  • How do I set up a second home network that bypasses Open DNS?

I have been having trouble downloading and streaming itunes content because I use Open DNS on my network.
There have been many posts about disabling Open DNS to solve the problem but if I do that, my internet filter goes away.
I would rather set up a second network that bypasses Open DNS and use it only for my Apple TV.
Is this possible and if so, how do I do it?
I have airport extreme base station with a second airport to extend the range, mac desktop, mac laptop, ATV, several iphones and ipads.
    I'm running OS X 10.7.5.
    Thanks in advance!

Are you suggesting that I go into my Airport router settings and just blank out the DNS settings and then reboot it?
Yes, exactly. You can always input those addresses again, if it does not solve the problem.
OpenDNS may offer some advantages over your whatever your ISP uses for DNS but optimizing download speed is not one of them.
Maybe I have jumped to the conclusion that Open DNS is the problem when maybe it isn't.
It is possible. As I understand it, Apple's servers attempt to use a location near you to deliver iTunes content, and OpenDNS may result in pointing it to a less ideal location.
3 hours may or may not be normal for HD movie. The download speed depends on a number of factors that are difficult to surmise without knowing details about your network and your ISP.

  • Setting up a second wireless network with TC

    Hi All
Am shiny new to these communities and a recent convert from PC/Windows to MAC/OS and have so far been loving a simple, easy to use home computer life!
I've scoured through to see if i could find an answer to my question but couldn’t see anything so my apologies if I’ve missed it and it has been answered before.
As part of our upgrade to MAC I also invested in a TC to enable us to make use of Time Machine and securely back up pictures and videos etc. it's been working like a dream and have had no problems. but now i want to get a bit clever.....i think
    Apologies for the impending "book"....
My current home set up is as follows:
BB is provided via cable so the router and modem are required to sit by the TV giving me some issues in getting a clear wifi signal in those far to reach corners of the house.  To overcome the occasional signal interruption I have used Power line Network Adaptors throughout the house.
    Downstairs
Cable Modem/Router - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Media streamer - Plugged directly into Router
    Office
Mac mini - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Airprint Printer - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Windows Laptop - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
    Upstairs
WD my Book Live - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Media Streamer - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
TC - Plugged into Power line Network adaptor
Currently the WD NAS holds our media content for streaming to the media streamers downstairs and in the bedroom.  While i could use the WD NAS to hold my Time Machine backups I was worried about available space and i didn’t want to put everything into one place in case the worst happens and it's ever stolen etc. So i elected to get a TC as a second NAS drive purely for time machine backups which then meant our family pics etc were safe and in the event of us ever getting broken in to its unlikely any would-be burglar would find both NAS's, if either.
But here in lays my issue.
My wireless range upstairs is fairly weak and i wanted to use the TC to "extend" my current wireless network upstairs. meaning iPads, iPhones etc will still get the benefit of a good signal and printing can still be down via airport etc.
I've tried to set it up via Time Machine that the wireless is turned on but the back ups are done over Ethernet (for obvious speed reasons) but for some reason i can’t seem to have the TC doing both.  If i have it plugged in to the Power line Network adaptor but set it up with wireless enabled i don’t get any better wireless signal upstairs.  But the backup still seems to be going over the Ethernet Power line Network adaptors.
What am i not doing?  Or is what i want to achieve not possible?
Apologies for the novel and i hope I’ve explained my set up correctly for someone to point me in the right direction?
Many Thanks in advance for any help or pointers

    I have a similar issue I guess.
I have the DSL(or cable modem, tried both) connected to the TC. The TC then shares the Internet wirelessly on the first and second floor(since the iMac is on the first, right next to the TC that is not a problem).
I want to get reliable network connectivity to the third floor so i have connected the TC to a Powerline adapter on the first floor and the second powerline on the third floor is connected to an Airport Express to extend the network up there.
However, the only way i could get it to work was to bridge with the AE on 3rd which creates a new network. It works great, as long as the devices are in the room from the startup of the network. If say i take the iphone or laptop down to 2nd or 1st floor and they access the wireless network from the TC with no problem, when I return them  to the 3rd floor, they see the 3rd floor network but I cannot get them assigned an IP address and they are stuck wth a self-assigned IP until I go back down to the first floor and unplug/replug the powerline there.
Ideally, I'd like it to be one network so there is no switch over, and therefore no need to reset, alternatively, I need some sort of solution to let the devices get a new IP address when they return to the third floor.
    Baffled.

  • Can't configurate my second Airport Express

Hi, I just spent two hours in vain to set up my second Airport Express.
I get Internet from my neighbors via WLAN.
I managed to configurate my first Airport Express (living-room) as a client 'connect with wireless network'. I only use it to stream music to my music center.
I bought a second Airport Express to do the same in the kitchen. The idea is that when I play music with itunes the music will play in the kitchen and in the livingroom. It doesn't work. When I reset and start from the scratch I have four options:
    A Create new network
    B Join an existing network
    C Replace a unit
    D Reset old settings
A works but doesn't solve the problem since it won't join the network
B doesn't work, first it is looking good, than there is written 'waiting for the station' for around 4 minutes and than there is an error message ' an unexpected error arrived, try again!'
C is not what I am looking for
D is not what I am looking for
Any ideas what to do? Why can't I join the existing network?
    Please help

  • Is my airport network secure with Personal File Sharing on?

I have my Airport Extreme connected to a cable modem. I have a G4 tower w/external hard drive connected by ethernet cable to the airport base station. I use a MacBook laptop wirelessly around the house to access the internet.
Each computer is set up for multiple users but we don't use passwords with any of our user accounts. I have Personal File Sharing turned on in both computers and am able to access accounts and drives from the other computer in the house.
I do have password protection (WPA/WPA2 personal) set up on the Airport network itself.
Does the fact that I don't have passwords on the user accounts mean someone outside of my home could get into my home network and access my files?
Does the afp address I use to access the other computer in the house afp://10.0.XXX mean it is restricted to people outside of my home?
Any guidance someone could provide is appreciated.

Does the fact that I don't have passwords on the user accounts mean someone outside of my home could get into my home network and access my files?
    No.
WPA (with a strong non-dictionary password) is going to keep everyone off you network.
If they could get on your network, then they would be able to access your files.

  • Daisy Chained Airport Network Wireless Client Problem

It's a long distance from my cable modem to the last area in my house I want to establish a wireless network in, so I set up a three-Airport network, with a Time Capsule at the cable modem, connected to an Airport Extreme (wirelessly), which is connected to another Extreme (wirelessly). Airport Utility shows the three in a chained arrangement:
The problem I'm having is that the last Airport won't allow any wireless clients. It does allow several devices to connect to it with a wired connection, just fine. Any suggestions how I can allow the last Airport to extend my network wirelessly as well as wired?

When I add a few clients to the list with their Mac addresses and change the Unlimited settings to No Access, the Airport Express stops working.
The last AirPort is configured to "join" the wireless network....even if you think that it might be set to "extend" a wireless network. In this type of configuration, the last AirPort provides no wireless signal extension.....but.... the Ethernet ports are enabled.
If you want the last AirPort to extend the wireless signal coverage, it will need to be connected using a wired Ethernet connection to your main router.....or.....it will need to be moved much closer to the Time Capsule if you want to try to extend wirelessly.
Maybe they're all really connected in a hub-spoke arrangement after all, and Airport Utiity is just showing them wrong?
No, they are not configured in a hub-spoke setup. If they were, then both of the AirPort Extremes would  be displayed as connecting directly to the Time Capsule.

  • How can I set up a wi-fi network, using one time capsule and two airport express

how can I set up a wi-fi network, using one time capsule and two airport express ?
The time capsule is near the Mac. ok
The first Airport is on the corridor, ok, works well and the App on the iPad signals so, ok
But when I plug the next Airport on another room nearby nothing happens, and signals disconected ....
is the signal so weak that is not able to go to ono room to the other ?

Well, even if you have the first express set up to extend the network, the second express can only extend from the TimeCapsule.
Maybe you got walls of sheetrook in the way, or kitchen/bathroom tiles, etc, dampening the signal rapidly.

  • My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.

  • Second Airport Express brings my network down

I tried adding a second Airport Export to my Airport network (presently I have an Airport Extreme plus an Airport Express upstairs to extend the network). However when I try to add the second AE downstairs, the network comes to a stand still. I set it up and it automatically detects my network and tries to extend it. But then when ever I tried to access any of the other devices, I am always asked to enter my device password. Also, It seems to be forever reading the network configuration. Either this second AE is defective or could it be that adding a second AE to extend my network will not work?

Unfortunately, screen shots are not working on the Apple forums.
You might be able to see what you have posted, but no one else can see them at this time.
So, you'll need to describe things that you see in the screenshots as much as possible.  Thanks.
As far as having two AirPort Express devices extend the network, that opens up a can of worms. We'll assume that you are trying to configure the Express devices to extend using a wireless connection and not wired.  As you know, when you extend using wireless, about half of the potential speed on the network is lost in the process.
Adding a second Express can really complicate things and really drag down the performance of the network significantly.
It is possible to have two Expresses both connect using wireless to extend the network, but here is the rub:
    1) Both Express devices need to be about the same distance from the AirPort Extreme
    2) Both Expresses need to be closer to the AirPort Extreme than they are to each other
The second Express cannot extend the signal from the first Express, it must connect to the AirPort Extreme and extend that signal.  If both Expresses are connecting to the AirPort Extreme and extending the AirPort Extreme signal, both Expresses will appear side by side horizontally under the AirPort Extreme in the AirPort Utility network display.
You do not want the AirPort Express devices to appear vertically, one on top of the other, in the display.
Notice that the Downstairs has a (4) in the name.
I have not ever seen that type of error, so more troubleshooting will be required.

  • Second Airport Express doesn't show up in Network

I have an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express used to extend the wireless network. I bought a second airport express to extend the network in another area of weak signal. I appear to go through the setup procedures correctly but it never gets to the final setup and does not show up in the airport utility. I get this message: The settings for this AirPort wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the AirPort wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again.
The light is green on the ae...
    any ideas?

Try a hard reset on the Express by holding in the reset button until the amber light begins to flash more quickly, keep holding when you see this for another few seconds and then release.
Move the Express near your computer and temporarily, connect to is using an ethernet cable
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab to name the device, assign password and adjust Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same as your main network
Check mark next to Allow Wireless Clients
Wireless Security = Same setting as your main network
Password = Same as main network
    Confirm Password
Click the Music icon to check to see that AirTunes is enabled. It should be by default.
    Click Update to save settings
After the Express has restarted, you can disconnect the ethernet cable and move the Express back to the desired location.

  • Advice on set up for a mixed Airport network with guest network.

    Hi,
The manuals on the Airport Extreme and Airport Networking are more technical than my knowledge base can follow.  I would like advice on how to set up a new network with a mixture of wired and wireless devices and some Windows equipment as well as os x based macs.  the following:  dsl broadband from Talk Talk to be managed by a Draytek Vigor 120 external modem connected to an Airport Extreme.  I want to connect a Nov 2009 iMac (with Mountain Lion installed), Apple TV and xbox by ethernet cable to the 3 ethernet ports on the Extreme, but also to connect wirelessly one Windows 7 laptop, one Macbook Pro (2010) (again running Mountain Lion) and various other wireless devices like an iPad 2, iPhones etcetera, with all devices being part of one network run under one SSID and able to access the internet, and the 3 computers being able to fileshare with each other. On my current Windows created network which I am abandoning for reasons I won't go into here, if more than one of the computers is switched on, I can use any one of the computers to access information in any of the shared folders on the other computers - via Finder in the case of the macs - and I need this going forward.  I would also like to create a Guest network as I have a lot of people come to stay who need internet access. To further complicate things, I would also like to add in an Airport Express wirelessly onto the network and link that to a hi-fi to give me the ability to play my iTunes library (situated on my iMac at present) on the hi-fi.
I appreciate that there are similar questions but I have not really found an answer that exactly nails my situation.
    Thanks in advance.

It is not really an issue of how many clients can the iMac serve, but more about the volume of traffic you are processing or data the database application needs to serve. We have a Mac hardware that is a good 6 years or more old running OSX Server and supporting 20/30 clients without any problems.
One idea you may like to consider.
Don't run the VPN on the mac, get a router or separate dedicated networking box that provides that purpose. Then it will talk the load of any networking issues and external attacks. It can also provide other networking services for you such a DHCP, firewall, DNS, internet gateway, etc. They cost less next to nothing and are easy to install.
When you need to get something faster, look for a second hand xerve - we use them all the time. They have the advantage of have fast and very reliable discs, also you can raid the disks and hot swap them for backup purposes,
Finally, moving from one machine to another is each with things like carbon copy. But you cannot have the same licence for OSX server running twice, so you will need to install normal OSX on the iMac once you have done the move.
As for can you easily move from a imac to mac pro, sure not to hard to do.

  • How do I unhide my network which I recently set up with new Airport Extreme?

I recently set up my new Airport Extreme. Then realised my Canon MX 410 was not seeing it on wifi network. I've been told I need to unhide the AE so the printer can see it. However, when I go into Airport Utility it is not giving me the option to unhide. I have tried connecting ethernet cable to it & turning off wifi, but this does not help.. Any ideas people?
    Thanks....

I've been told I need to unhide the AE so the printer can see it.
Advice likes this sounds good.....IF.....you previously enabled the option to "hide" your network. Chances are, you would know if you did do this, but if you are not sure, you can check to see if the network really is "hidden".
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options at the bottom of the window
If the network is hidden, you will see a check mark in the box next to Create Hidden Network.  If the box is not checked, then your network is not hidden...so there is no way to "unhide" a network that is not hidden in the first place.....and you might want to contact Canon support for help on how to set up your printer.
If you do see that the box is checked, then remove the check mark to "unhide" your network, click Save, then click Update and allow a full minutre for the AirPort Extreme to restart.

  • I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either.

I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either. I have an iphone 4 that will not connect to 5ghz.
    thank you!

Your AirPort Express is already providing two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but each band is using the same wireless network name.
This is the default setup for the AirPort Express, which is recommended for most users. The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Express.
It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" devices at that network to connect. Some users swear by this option.....(I am not one of them).... but you might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Express
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options near the bottom of the next window
Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name.....which will automatically add "5 GHz" to the network name....so you can identify it
Click Save, then click Update and wait a full minute for the Express to restart
Now you will need to "point" your 5 GHz capable devices at the 5 GHz network name.  2.4 GHz devices will connect to your "other" network name.

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • Setting up a Apple Airport Extreme to work on the Telecom New Zealand Broadband network?

Has anyone had any success in setting up their airport extreme to work on the Telecom New Zealand broadband network without having to connect it to the modem which NZ Telecom supply?
Any advice and tips would be welcomed!

    1. Since a "router" is needed next to the cable modem and before the ethernet switch, should we put the new Extreme in that basement location? Or, should we instead put the new Extreme somewhere on the main floor of the house (connected by ethernet) and leave the old one where it is?
Assuming the older Extreme is no older than Gen3 or Gen4 it is a perfectly adequate router for the speeds that cable will generally give you.
And therefore it is best to bridge the new AC extreme and use it upstairs via ethernet. That will then give you the best wireless in the most suitable area of the house.
    2. Should we somehow bridge the two Airport Extremes (the old one and the new one) into one wireless network?
Yes, what is called roaming network. Both units create a wireless network.
You simply setup same name and same security/password on all the devices for wireless. The wireless channels are the differentiator.. and you can either leave that on auto or take some control over it and set manually. I would be inclined to do it manually just because the AC wireless needs the 149 channel for high speed AC.. so you do not want the old Extreme in the basement using that. Force that one to channel 36 or 40. However it is likely to work itself out ok on auto.. but I recommend you check it.
The apple docos on roaming are rather ancient..
Here is a post with newer info.
Setting Up Roaming - New AirPort Extremes and Utility
    3. Should we go a further step and also bridge in one or both of the old Airport Express units, perhaps on the top floor of the house for example?
Yes, if you have a black spot with poor wireless you can add the Express to help. The old ones are single band and will probably work better at 2.4ghz but whatever suits you.. perhaps setup one on 2.4ghz and one on 5ghz.
