Setting up GPIB to send/recieve data

Ok I know this is a rather simple question, but I honestly couldnt find a clear answer in the forums nor in the help documents...
My situation is as follows whatever help would be greatly appreciated:
I am trying to write instrument drivers for my labs HP4195A network/impedance/spectrum analyzer. I was able to locate a similar set of drivers AG4395A network/Imp/Spect analyzer. However, because of the newbie that I am I am not sure how they work, so I am not sure how to adapt them for my instrument. Also for right now we would be satisfied with just a display through LabVIEW of what the network analyzer is reading, and no control. Do you know how I can accomplish this?
Well that is the main question or goal I am trying to accomplish other than that the following is the simple questions that I need help with, that may help me get to where I am going.
How can I permenantly set the GPIB address in my LabVIEW vi? I know its on GPIB::17 cause thats what the measurement automation program tells me as well as what the analyzer tells me.
How can I recieve data from my GPIB device? and what kind of data can i expect it to be?
How can I send commands to my GPIB device? like i'll even take a simple Beep command done thru labview.
Well I will extremely greatful for whatever help I can get. Thank You
Andrew Ho

1) If you want to make a cotrol retain a specific value, right clock on the control and select Data Operations>Make Current Value Default. Most of the time, an instrument driver is called by another VI and I prefer to explicitly define the resource name in the calling VI for documentation purposes so I never set the default.
2) You get dtat from an instrument by doing a VISA Read. You need to provide the resource name and the number of bytes you expect to read. Usually, you do not get any data without first writing to the instrument and requesting data. The command you write is a query. The exact data you read will all depend on the nature of the query. You will read data in the form of strings. The strings will need to be converted if you want to perform numeric operations on them.
3) You write to an instrument using VISA Write. Again you need to specify the resource name. The write buffer input is the command you need to send to the instrument. Instruments that comply with 488.2 will support a standard set of commands for doing some basic queries. One such command is *IDN?. When the instrument receives this, it will reply with some information about itself such as manufacturer and model number. Other commands to set up measurement parameters are unique to each instrument and you have to get those from the manual. You'll need to study this to get the correct syntax. It may be similar to your old instrument but it may be completely different.
Before you start to do any LabVIEW coding, I would recomend you spend most of your time in MAX and issuing interactive commands there. You should also read the shipping document called LabVIEW Measurments Manual (Help>Search the LabVIEW Bookshelf). Lastly, the Instrument Driver Network has some links to what an instrument driver is and how to develop one. There are a set of templates available that can greatly simplify your job.

  • How to send joystick data over TCP connection

    Hi all,
I am a long time Labview discussion forum user for learning, but this is my first time posting a question, I hope somebody can help me!
In the attached VI I am trying to send data from a joystick over a TCP connection. I can send data fine using the TCP examples (in fact the majority of my VI is just a copy of the example). However I am to the point where I do not know how to send all the data necessary (3 axis data, 12 buttons, and the POV data) over TCP. Strings, clusters, and arrays were never my strong suite and converting between them is a nightmare for me.
Basically I am trying to send each axis data (X,Y, and Z), button data (12 buttons), and POV data (the POV data will be calculated to adjust the position of a camera, so the immediate data is not important, I will add functions to add the change in the button movements to write a standing position for two servos [pan and tilt], for which that I will need to send over the TCP connection) over the TCP connection to control various cameras and motors. I don't know if it is posible to send that much data over a TCP connection in one write VI through a string, and also how to separate the string on the other side in order to control the client VI.
Again, the actual TCP communication I get, and can operate fine, just formatting all the data into a string (or whatever is required) so that I can unpack on the other side is the issue here.
Another question I have (not impotant to get the program running just might make it easier on me) is can a TCP server (which sends the data to the client) also recieve data back from the client on the same port ( for example sensor data and digital positions [on,off])? Or do I need to set up two TCP communication loops with the first client acting as the server on a different port than the first, which then sends the data to the original server, which also has a client TCP configuration in another loop? I hope this makes sense...
One final question.....I already have a solution to this but using labview for the entirety of this project would be nice. I use skype to stream 1080p video from a webcam to my computer so I can view live feed. Can labview do this? This would be awesome if so, I am just not sure if the communication protocols in use could support real time (or as close as possible to streaming) for 1080p video.
Thanks all in advance for your help,

Well, you cast the axis info cluster to a string, but then you cast it back to an array of DBL. Thatr's not compatible. You should probably cast it back to an "axis info" cluster of exactly the same type. Go the the other VI and right-click the cluster wire to create a constant. Now move that diagram cluster constant to the other VI and use it as type.
Your default ports don't seem to match. You seem to have client and server roles confused. In the sever you create a listener, but then you start sending packets, even though no connection is established. The connection needs to be initiated by the client.
Your client stops the loop the first time a timeout is encountered. Shouldn't that be more permanent? Also, please retain code clarity and avoid unecessary complexities. For example, replace the "not or" with a plain "or" and change the loop to "stop if true"

You can send as much as you want. The casting to/from string is the same as described above.

The primary function of a "server" is to wait for a connection and then communicate with the client once a conenction is established. An established TCP/IP connection is fully two-way and both sides can send and receive.

  • Best way to recieve Datas from MII in SAP

    Hi everybody,
We are discussing which way is the best to get data to SAP when SAP is the initiator.
We tesed RFC but it looks like that if I call a transaction in MII as a rfc I can only send data and it is not possible to recieve data in this way. Can somebody confirm that?
To send data to MII we usually use IDOCs when SAP is the initiator.
To send data to SAP we usually use rfc when MII is the initiator.
To send data to MIIwe usually use rfc when MII is the initiator
But what can we use if we want to send data to SAP and SAP is the initiator?
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    Matthias

    Hi,
    thanks for your quick answer.
Is it possible to use an rfc in ABAP-Code and recieve data?
I think this is not possible.
    Our Business-case:
A user starts an SAP-Programm (e.g. custom transaction) where he has some informations to a machine.
In this program we also want to see data from MII.
it should be something like this in ABAP-code:
    CALL FUNCTION mii_transaction DESTINATION mii_dest
                         parameter_list.
But I read in a help-file that it is only possible to send information not to recieve. Is this correct?
Or is it also possible to recieve data from mii like this (in parameter_list)?

  • Sending log data to two different files using log4j

    Hi,
Can some one please help me with my problem I have here?
I want to send log data to two diffrent files depending on the logging level such as DEBUG and WARN.
How can you configure this in log4j.properties.
Please post sample code for log4j.properties to achieve this.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Finally, I found the solution to this problem my self.
What you need to do is define two loggers in the application, and set two priority levels to these loggers and define two out put files to these loggers. Deploy the war file, restart application server and you are good to go.
This seems to be working for me. Only glitch I found is, the out put in
the second file is displaying one space character at the start of line starting from second line (First line don't have this problem). This is odd. It may be because of my faulty code. Any how thanks for you all.

  • How to send binary data in the message body

How can we send binary data in the message body that is base64 encoded? below are the requirements
    Mime Header.
    Mime-version: 1.0
    Content-Type: application/octet_stream; name=test
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: Base64
Submission must be named "test.sub" (lowercase)
    Submission must be base64 mime-encoded
Submission must be sent in the body of the message (not as an attachment)
Only one submission per mail message
No other comments should be put in the body of the mail message (other than the submission)
I highly appreciate your help. If you can provide few examples, that will be very helpfull.
    Thanks,
    Madan

Use Message.setContent to set the content, or use Message.setDataHandler with
a DataHandler constructed with a ByteArrayDataSource. If the content is not
"naturally" encoded in base64, you can enforce it by setting the Content-Transfer-Encoding
header to "base64". Any reasonable mail reader won't care what encoding you use, as
long as the decoded data is correct.

  • Executing same VI multiple times, sending/retrieving data

    I know how to
execute a single vi multiple times using the invoke node/reentrant method.  But
I am not sure how to send/get data the running vi's.
    A little background
on my project.  I have to test up to 64 units for a long period of time.  When
one of the 64 units is found, I want the test to execute the test.vi then come
back to my main.vi and wait for the next unit to test to be
    found.
    The test.vi will
require some information to run so I need to get that data into the test.vi
along with a way to stop the tests while they are running.  I also want to
report running data back to the user, so I need to get data from
    test.vi.
    I am using a
producer/consumer/display loop(s) and I would like to be able to use my display
queue to collect and sort data from my running test.vi's.
    I may be going about
this wrong executing test.vi using the invoke node, but I am trying to find away
that the test vi's will independently execute and run.
    Please let me know
if I need to clarify my situation.  I have been trying to figure this out for a
while, so it may make sense in my head, but not on paper.
    Thanks,
    Zac

If I understand you correctly, you are invoking a reentrant VI to run in up to 64 different instances?  And you need to set up a communications mechanism between each instance and the main VI.
I would look at a functional global variable or action engine.  (Search on either of those terms and  you will come up with numerous examples).
Let the FGV store data in its uninitialized shift registers.  If you need a separate queue from each VI instance to the main, then have one shift register be an array of queue references.  Let's say you are ready to invoke the first instance of your VI.  Pass to it and ID value of 0 in its connector pane.  Obtain a queue and store the reference to that in index 0 of the queue array in the FGV.  Every time you need to enqueue or dequeue from queue 0, you use index array to retrieve the reference stored in queue 0.  You would do that whenever you need to work inside the instance of the VI (have it remember that its ID was 0) or in the main VI.
Next instance of the reentrant VI, you pass it a 1 as its ID.  Let the FGV obtain a queue and store its reference in index 1 of the array.  You could have other values stored in the FGV or other arrays such as an array of booleans that serve as flags to tell the instance of the reentrant VI to stop running.
Basically the FGV or action engine becomes a storehouse of information for each instance of the reentrant VI.  It will be scalable.  Each time you need to add a new instance of your VI, you store the info in another element of the array stored in the FGV that is based on a ID number you assign as you create each instance.

  • I'm using a 1D Arrary with 27 different elements and would like to send those data over UDP Write and UDP Read functions.

I'm using a 1D array with 27 different elements. I would like to transfer that data over a UDP connection, and read it back by using UDP connections.
But I would like to read 3 elements at a time (On read side) and send those to 9 different ports.
Note: the data will go to only one PC with one Network Address)
    * 1st elements (0,1,2) and send to port #XXX to see those 1st 3 elements.
    * continue until the elements reaches up to 27
This is what I have done but I'm finding myself in pitfalls...
    Send side:
I'm using a UDP Open connection on send side to send my data. So with selected a Source Port, I have created a UDP Op
en connection. Im using only one source port to send all the data across the channel. I would like to read 1st 3 elements and send those data across with an assigned Destination port. I would like to do that for 9 times b/c there are 27 elements in the array. So Im using a For Loop and setting N count to 9. So Im not getting any errors when I execute and no answer on the other side at all.
    Read side:
Im using a UDP Open connection to read in the data with port #. Im using while loop to with Boolean inside by making a true all the time. Inside that While loop, Im using For Loop to read the 3 elements data a time and send to a right port address. (As start out I was just trying to see if it works for only one port).

You are not getting any errors because UDP is a connectionless protocol. It does not care if anyone receives it. Your example will work fine with the following considerations.
    (1) Don't use the generic broadcast address (255.255.255.255).
    (2) You are listening on port 30000. So why are you sending to port 1502, nobody will receive anything there.
The destination port of the outgoing connection must match the server port of the listener. (The source port is irrelevant, set ot to zero and the system will use a free ephemeral port).
    (3) On the receiving side, you are not indexing on the received string, thus you only retain the last received element. Then you place the indicator outside the while loop where it never gets updated. :-(
    (4) Do yourself a favor and don't micromanage how the data is sent across. Just take the entire array, flatten it to string, send it across, receive it, unflatten back to array, and get on with the task.
(You can do the same with any kind of data).
I have modified your VI with some reasonable default values (destination IP = 127.0.0.1 (localhost)), thus you can run both on the same PC for testing "as is". Just run the "read" first, then every time you run "send", new data will be received.

  • When setting up an aux send and returning it to another bus, when you solo the aux bus it solos the entire return bus with all other channels mixed in.

when i set up a aux send for parallel compression from a snare drum input channel to two aux busses—one for a compressor and a second aux bus for the limiter—and send the outputs of the comp/lim aux busses to the drum buss everything works fine. However, when I solo the comp/lim aux busses the entire drum mix is in the solo as well. Is there an alternative routing scenario?

You still refuse to discuss data versus radio signal.
So, I guess that is that. You have no proof to back up your contention as neither do I.
Granted, from the g device to my Express, it is at g speeds. But, I contend, that once that g radio signal is converted back to data only (now at speed of light) inside the Express, the Express sends that data, via the exclusive “Extended network” connection, to the Extreme, at n speed. It has to as the Extreme will only take n speed.
Sure, it is splitting hairs, if I am right. I am not saying I am. But my idea (before our branch debate on g and n signal versus data upon arrival at the Express) is an interesting way to force old g clients to use only one router. But to force those pesky g clients to use the newer simultaneous dual band Express by setting the Extreme to 5GHz g only was a new solution for me. It worked too. In that case, it is not about minute speed gains or losses but simply letting the g clients have their one party at the Express, which can handle them better when part of an extended network with an older, original Extreme.
It is also far better to just have one Wi-Fi router as, adding Airport routers in an extended network, slows things down 60% or less and requires more "data management overheard", according to Apple*.
It is interesting that they said data management overhead and not radio signal management?
Alternatively, using the “Roaming network” method where the two stations are linked via Ethernet, is an even better option.

  • Send/receive data without a terminating character

I am trying to use the visa driver to send hex data over a serial port. I have tried to disable terminating characters but when I read from the port the trasnmission still terminates with a 0x0A character. How can I send/receive data without a terminating character???

You need to call viSetAttribute with VI_ATTR_ASRL_END_IN set to VI_ASRL_END_NONE. In LabVIEW, use a write property node with the Serial End In mode set to None (0).

  • Sending Binary data using ASCII

    Hello All,
I'm trying to control serial-interface instrument using NI-VISA with a set of ASCII codes, but the instrument reads/sends binary data only. What should I do so that the ASCII codes I send are converted into binary commands for the instrument to read, and that the data I receive is converted back into ASCII?
    Thanks in advance
    M

    Hi M,
first you should define the words "binary commands/data". Then you should know: ASCII is binary too...
You may work with an U8 array. You can easily convert strings to U8 arrays and vice-versa!

I need to send binary data to a PIC without the data being converted to ascii. With the VISA vi's, when I want to send 11111111, it gets converted to a string "255", and is sent as "2","5","5" in ascii.
How can I send it as one byte?

Well I wouldn't call my customer an idiot either.  I didn't know he was your customer.  Sorry.  Not every comment posted here is intended to directly solve a problem.  We are a fun loving group, and occasional ribbings take place here.  I still think that trying to use 9 bits over an 8-bit protocol is not a good way to go.  But if it is the only way, then so be it.
    r_keller wrote:
Does the Mark or Space parity bit add another 10th bit to the command or can i only use either ODD parity/Mark/Space?
According to the link you attached, the parity bit adds only one more bit.  If the number of bits is set to 8, then the parity is the 9th bit, and you can only use Mark or Space to force that 9th bit to either 1 or 0 respectively.  If you try to use odd or even parity, the protocol will determine the parity and change the bit accordingly, and it may not be the one you intended to send.  The start and stop bits are fixed by the protocol and cannot be used for extra data bits.
Actually, until I read that article about using Mark and Space, I had no idea at all that sending 9 bits at a time was possible.

    a) complete a workout -- check
    b) connect my ipod to my computer -- check

    d) Select "Automatically send workout data to Nike+." -- NOT A CHOICE I CAN MAKE -- I CAN'T FIND THIS CHOICE !!

I am using the latest software on both the computer & iPod and their is an unsynched workout on my ipod touch.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks in advance.

Hmmm, sounds weird. If someone else has experienced this maybe they will jump in here, but if not, you can always call Nike+. Surprisingly they answer their phone quite quickly.
Anyway, here's my shot at it:
I will assume you have downloaded the Nano updater ( http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ ).
I would eject and disconnect the Nano (perhaps restarting my computer) and close iTunes, then reopen iTunes, reconnect and see if the box is available.
