Setting up mail on macbook

i've just had to re install all my programs as i was finding the macbook running slow with all the junk on it.
i've never had mail set up on my macbook and i'm trying to set it up,however, i am stuck.
on the 1st pop up of General Information i've selected my account type as POP and my account description as POP Account and my full name dean *** and placed my email address in the space provided. then click on continue.
the 2nd pop up of incoming mail server states
Incoming mail server with an example : mail.example.com ( what do i put here?)
user name ( do i put my full email here?)
password (is this my email password?)
any help would be great thanks
deano

Incoming mail server with an example : mail.example.com ( what do i put here?)
This is where you put in the server that your email comes from (your provider)
If you have, for example, gmail... you would put in mail.gmail.com
user name ( do i put my full email here?)
yes...just like you would login to your email on the client you used before
password (is this my email password?)
yes
any help would be great thanks
Hope it did

I took my iMac to be fixed and when I got it back, mail was not set, so I called Apple and they helped me set up mail. Now the new mail goes to trash and there is no number by the 'inbox' to tell me how many new messages I have. I cannot save a draft to 'drafts.' There is a large number by 'trash' (I think all mail went to trash - including drafts). When I send myself an emai, it goes to trash also. This is on both my iMac (the one taken in) and my MacBook Pro (same emails) which was not taken in.
I went to 'rules' but have no idea what to do there. There are no rules in the rule box. When I click 'add rule' it puts 'rule 1' in the rule box, but since that was not there when I took it in, I delete it to have an empty rule box.
Can someone pleasehelp me. I am completely stupid with all this. Do not under stand what is suppose to be set up in 'rules.'
    Thank you so much,
    Arudi

Now new mail is coming to both computer's inboxes but there is no number on the stamp icon on dock to show number of emails on the iMac. Nor is there a number by either email address under MAILBOXES/inbox (sidebar) on the iMac. This number is showing on MacBook Pro.
I also can save drafts now on both computers.
Seems the Pro is fixed and the iMac is only missing the numbers on dock icon and by addresses in inbox.
Now that the problem is less, I feel i am wasting your time but will continue so maybe I can get those numbers back.
Two emails > AT&T email and gmail.
Apple's Mail program for email - yes, and gmail.
    IMAP for both accounts.
Did not change mail configuration on MacBook.
The iMac and MacBook Pro have the same mail configuration except in Accounts/mailbox behaviours/store draft messages on the server was not marked on MacBook > it is now.
'Store junk messages on the server' was marked on one computer for gmail, but is unmarked on both now.
On the iMac, Accounts/Accounts info/Outgoing mail for gmail is smtpgmail.
On the MacBook Pro for gmail it is smpt.gmail.com (plus) my email address.
Rules/Add rule window, on the MacBook third line is 'Any Recipient', on the iMac third line is 'From."
The last box on that line has my email address on the MacBook.
The last box on that line has the last address I sent an emil to (last night), on the iMac.
On the last line on iMac, no box was selicted for 'to mailbox' > I choose 'inbox' because it is on the MacBook Pro.
Now I have a Rule #1 and am not sure I should have because there was no rules marked when I took the computer in.
Thank you. I relized I had done the labeling wrong when so much of my question appeared twice and no one else's did. I know how to do it now.
    Thank you so much,

  • Mail gets stuck importing messages from Time Machine when setting up new Lion Macbook Pro

I just used time machine to set up my new 13-in mid-2012 Macbook Pro and am having trouble setting up the Mail application. It opens fine, asks me to import my messages, takes about an hour and a half, then gets stuck at "less than a minute." I then have to cancel out, and restarting causes the whole process to start over.
I've tried deleting the Envelope Index, but that didn't help. I also tried restarting the computer. Hitting "Cancel" instead of "Continue" to try to set up Mail without importing my messages just exits the application.
Any ideas why it hangs at the very end, and how I can avoid this?

Did anyone find a solution here?
This has happened to me after numerous crashes over the years and just did again. Seems to be a recurring problem when dealing with lots of mail messages.
Today, after 3 attempts, it still hangs up on 50,951 of 166,972 (yes there are a lot and for a reason).

    Hi Jim,
Depending on the customer feedback, it works fine. Apple Mail the client that comes with OSX supports standard protocols (POP3, IMAP, SMTP), these are all supported by Exchange 2010.
If you're running Mac OS 10.4 Tiger or Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, you can still use the Mac Mail App to connect to your account. However, you need to connect to your account without using IMAP or POP.
If you're running Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard or Mac OS 10.7 Lion, you can use the Mail program included with those releases to connect to your email account automatically using an Exchange account.
When you use Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard or Mac OS 10.7 Lion and connect using an Exchange account, you can use features that aren't available to users who connect through IMAP or POP, including iCal and Address Book.

  • Setting up Mail on a network

After countless years of being subject to the tyranny of Windows (and other horrible operating systems going back to 1984), we (2 of us) have broken free and are now the proud owners of an iMac and a MacBook connected together by a wireless network. We achieved our freedom less than 2 weeks ago, so we are still in the throes of setting up our system and we would be grateful for some advice about Mail.
We have a POP mail account with a main e-mail address, but our previous mail program (Turnpike) allowed us to have further addresses by using mailboxes within the program. When I set up Mail on the iMac, I created the account, with 3 e-mail addresses (1 was the main one and the other 2 as 'aliases'(?)) and on the MacBook I created the account in the same way, but with the other 2 e-mail addresses - the main one wasn't included at all.
I had hoped that when either one of us logged on to get mail, then we would download only those messages specifically addressed to the e-mail addresses that I had entered in Mail Preferances|Accounts. (Am I making sense?) Unfortunately it didn't work - whichever of the 2 of us who logged on first downloaded all the messages, no matter who they were addressed to.
Then I decided to set up Mailboxes on the two machines - 3 on the iMac and 2 on the MacBook - with Rules which would redirect mail to the appropriate Mailbox. This is where I have come unstuck; the Rules operate perfectly well on the iMac, but I have no idea what to put after 'Move Message to Mailbox:' because the 2 Mailboxes are on the MacBook. Should I put the MacBook's name? Its IP address? Is this possible at all in Mail? Do I need to use a different e-mail application?
If anyone else has found a solution to this problem, I would be most grateful for your advice. Reading through this, I realise that I have gone on at great length and for that I apologise - especially to those who might be gently snoozing by now. We really do love our Macs and have all the symptoms of recent converts - boring anyone within hailing distance with interminable stories of how wonderful they are.
    Many thanks.
    iMac 20" Intel/ MacBook 13" Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Wireless network

our previous mail program (Turnpike) allowed us to have
further addresses by using mailboxes within the program.
I don't know what Turnpike is, but what you're saying here doesn't make sense.
I had hoped that when either one of us logged on to
get mail, then we would download only those messages
specifically addressed to the e-mail addresses that I
    had entered in Mail Preferances|Accounts.
When Mail (or any other mail POP client) logs into your mail account on the server, it doesn't care at all what your email address is. The only thing that matters is the username and password required to log into the account. Once logged in, all the newly arrived messages there are downloaded.
I have no idea what to put after 'Move Message to
Mailbox:' because the 2 Mailboxes are on the MacBook.
Should I put the MacBook's name? Its IP address? Is
this possible at all in Mail?
You cannot move mail to mailboxes not stored within your home folder in Mail, neither with a rule nor manually. You may be able to overcome this limitation with a different mail client.

  • TS3276 Set up Mail Accounts

I have 2 gmail accounts set up in my mail on macbook air. I send mail from one account but the reply goes to my other account. When composing the email I double-checked that the mail is sent from the correct address. The reply shows that it is mailed to the correct address but when I click the arrow to the right of the name on my account, it reads as my other gmail address. What's going on?

Hmmm.  All I can say is check for a fourth time.
POP account as you describe,  but IMAP is the more common for synching accounts between machines.
Try deleting that mail account  on the Mac and renenter all your info as new if you have to.

  • Way to avoid setting up Mail to email from online links?

I recently got a new macbook pro, and have not set up Mail yet. I do not plan on using it. When I click on any contact links online (safari browser) it does not display address but automatically sends me to Mail and prompts me for setup. I don't have transfer info for account and don't want to use mail at all. Maybe this is more of a safari question, but is there any way for email links online to direct me someplace other than mail or just display the address instead of opening mail app?
    thanks.

You don't have to use Mail and Mail can change the default email application.
    Open Mail.
From the Mail menu, choose Preferences.
    Click the General button.
Choose your desired default email application from the Default Email Reader pop-up menu.
OR you can use RCDefaultApp to change the default email client.

  • Trouble Setting Up Mail

    Hi,
I should be receiving my MacBook Pro in a couple days and want to set up Mail. My college's e-mail, however, doesn't work on MacMail. Is there a way to MAKE it work? I go to a PC school (unfortunately) and I want to use the Mail feature on my Mac. Another option is to have all my e-mail forwareded to G-Mail and set G-Mail to my Mac Mail, but I want the original sender's name to appear, not my own e-mail address. Is there a way to do that? Any tips? Thanks.
    --Bill

    Hello Bill.
The Mail.app supports accessing an Exchange Account.
An Exchange account allows you to connect to your Exchange server via IMAP, and if you enter text in the Outlook Web Access Server field, Mail filters non-email related content from the server. (You can get the text you need to enter from your mail account provider.)
For Exchange to work with Mail, Exchange administrators need to configure the Exchange server for IMAP access. Some system administrators may refer to an Outlook Web Access Server as an Internet Information Services (IIS) server.

  • Do I really need to pay fir a yahoo email to set up mail on Mac?

I have a free yahoo account and I can't set up mail on my MacBook pro? It says something about a p.o.p.
Why doesn't it work? It works on my iPhone.

No. You should be able to use your Yahoo through Mail for free. Go into Yahoo Mail Help to see if you can find the right IMAP servers.
Try to use IMAP instead of POP3 so if you read a message in Mail, it will get marked as read in Yahoo Mail (online). Yahoo should have the right information for it. When you're setting up Mail, it will ask for an IMAP incoming server, and an outgoing server. I believe for Google, it's imap.google.com it should be something similar for yahoo.
    Hope that helps!

  • Setting up Mail with Optimum Online

I'm trying to set up Mail to work with the internet service provider Optimum Online on a brand new MacBook running OS X 10.5. This is a "first time" set up for Mail. I think I entered all the information correctly but I cannot connect to the Optimum Online Mail server. I can't complete the setup. I'm sure I have the correct user id and password to access the mail server. Mail just won't complete the automatic set up of the account. Does anyone have any ideas I can try to fix this? I can't use Mail at all, since I can't get past the automatic set up screens at all...
    Thanks!

Thanks again for the advice. I was able to finally connect to receive email, so I know I'm connected to the incoming mail server. I still can't send email though. I'm not able to connect to the outgoing server. It is a POP3 account. I've entered what I think are the correct server names, but I can't connect to the outgoing mail server. I did delete the com.apple.mail.plist file and restarted Mail, but the start up screen still had some information already added in the fields. After my latest attempt to set up the account, after waiting for quite some time, I did an message saying "unable to connect to smtp server. Make sure username and password are correct, etc. I clicked continue and was able to get into Mail. For some reason, this particular ISP uses the same server name for both incoming and out going email. I haven't run across this before. Also, in Mail Preferences, under Accounts, the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): field has the correct server name followed by (Offline). I can't seem to take this server online. Going to the advanced tab shows the "Use default Ports" (25, 465,587) radio button selected. Authentication: Password, etc.. I don't know if this helps you or not. Thanks again for the advice... Ed

  • Setting up Mail for different locations

I have enjoyed using a MacBook Pro at several locations including my home and office. I use wireless at home (airport extreme) and connect using ethernet or wireless at work. While my programs and safari work seamlessly at both locations, I cannot access my e-mail using Mail unless I am at home on my home network. I used the Connection Doctor while at work, but it only indicated that I wasn't connected. While it was saying that, I was simultaneously searching for solutions to this problem on safari and updating my software using software update. Does anyone have any suggestion for how to set up Mail at work?

I would suggest posting this question in the "Applications > Mail and Address book" Discussion board.

  • VZ Contact Transfer will not work on Wi-Fi; Synch with iTunes sets up mail

VZ Contact Transfer goes into a loop with Verizon iPhone connected to your Wi-Fi and does not work.
Your wi-fi network will come up right after registering VZ iPhone. You could wait until later to allow it to connect.
Otherwise, disconnect router to force iPhone onto Verizon 3G network and proceed. If you click the change phone number button, it will get you a new access code to your old Verizon contacts from Verizon back up. (Back up before signing up on iPhone)
Took me hours of fooling around to learn this on another bulletin board.
Also after hours of fooling around to set up mail, synched iPhone thru iTunes to mail, calendar, etc and the email accounts set themselves up.
Hope this saves you some time
    Enjoy!

I don't have an answer for you but from my experience iOS WiFi syncing has always been a hit and miss affair (more miss than hit I'm afraid). I have gotten to the stage where I rarely use the WiFi sync. It is just quicker, easier and much less stressful to use the USB cable. I am having the same issues with all the iOS devices in our family which includes various models of iPhone, iPad and an iPod Touch and have been having them since WiFi syncing was introduced (in iOS5 ???). And then I have not even mentioned my favorite iTunes syncing messages: "Waiting for items to copy" and "Waiting for changes to be applied"!
iTunes is always extremely quick and eager to pick up the devices but as soon as I click on sync it shows "Looking for iDevice" and then the device disappears. I have found that initiating the sync from the Settings app on the device prevents this issue.
It does however seem as if it is worse with Windows 7. I did not have so many issues with my previous Windows Vista PC.
Sorry I cannot be of any help.
