Setting up Podcast Producer errors out

It looks like I am almost done having this setup. My PcP 2 server is setup and forward / reverse DNS are working. I've kerberized the service.
When going through the setup assistant, at the last step, I am getting an error message that states setup of the PcP failed.
My podcast producer startup log returns this:
2009-11-04 18:23:59 -0600 - Checking Open Directory search policy…
2009-11-04 18:23:59 -0600 - Checking host names…
2009-11-04 18:23:59 -0600 - Error: no host name in system configuration

2009-11-04 18:23:59 -0600 - Checking database…
2009-11-04 18:23:59 -0600 - Checking Kerberos…
2009-11-04 18:23:59 -0600 - Done. Fail.
How can I resolve the problem with No Host Name in System configuration. As far as I can tell, everything is setup properly on that box.

I had the same issue too and scutil verified my HostName (not to be confused with what `hostname` returns) was not set:
admin$ scutil --get HostName
HostName: not set
this did the trick for me:
admin$ scutil --set HostName foobar.domain.private

  • Setting up Podcast Server: error 256, message says uninitalized constant ActiveSupport::Dependencies::Mutex

Settings up podcast server for the first time, everything seems fine, but the Configure Podcast Producer helper fails on setup.
the error in the Server log, which repeats is:
    Loaded Podcast Library ...
    Migrating database: ... /db.sqlite3
    ... setup_pcastserverd_library failed: 256
also interesting is the Error log, which repeats:

    rake aborted!
    uninitialized constant ActiveSupport::Dependencies::Mutex
(See full trace by running task with --trace)
I've tried changing the location of the Library, doing the standard as opposed to the express setup and turning off the Podcast Capture web application (which turns itself back on on save). Xgrid also works, with single signon and i'm using OD w/ Kerberos.
I host some rails apps on the same machine, so it's possible that i've updated past whatever the podcast server needs (as it seems to be written in ruby, and obviously uses rake) but It seems weird that the server wouldn't catch these dependancies.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

  • Is Podcast Producer ready for primetime?

Has anyone gotten Podcast Producer to work consistently? I only had it work once yesterday for one Blog. After that I was not able to connect to the server from Podcast Capture. Kept on getting an error related to unknown username or password. Even logged into the podcast server I couldn't access either the pcastadmin or pcastuser. Tried to delete the users and start over again. Still no success. Wiped the computer and started over again, I setup everything needed. Xgrid would only show its own controller and agent on the Podcast Producer Server. The agents showed they are connected to the XGrid in the XGrid system preference. Since 10.5 Server came out I have installed and tried to configure Podcast Producer at least 9 times. Finally this morning it would upload the video but it never went anywhere. The logs only showed that there were some permission errors on the external storage that is being used for sharing.
As most Mac software is not that hard to setup or use, Podcast Producer would seem to be that easy also. But I am disappointed that I am having this much problems with it. I guess we are going to have to wait until it is more mature before trying to use it in a production setting.

I did not have any of these issues.
I used a Workgroup setup with augmented OD records and then started using server admin to set up Podcast Producer. I followed the setup instruction in the manual step by step (including the dns server entry they suggest and using kerberos etc.) and it worked.
Once starting using it I encountered serveral(*) problems, but overall it is working.
1: Podcast Producer cannot upload to Wikis hosted on https://
2: Serveral Problems with sizes of the Intro and exit movie
3: Encodings cannot be changes due to lack of a tool for it
4: Using large video files (>20 Gb) brings arbitrary workflow failures
5: The encoding step (transforming in final video format) does not scale (cpus)
    6: etc....

  • Podcast Producer

Trying to set up Podcast Producer, I found the ip address and entered it but for the last few hours I cannot figure out what 'name and password' to put in?  Just made the switch from PC to Mac and I am literally going mad.  Can anyone help me?  I have tried my wifi network name and password and it keeps saying server not accessed or some such thing.  It is my home computer so no 'admin'.
Any help truly appreciated! Thank you.

You really need to put your codes between the
    [\code] tags
    see http://forum.java.sun.com/features.jsp#Formatting
for more infoCode tags might make it look a little better, but there's still too darn much code. We're volunteers, after all. It'd be a lot of work to review all of this stuff. Can you demonstrate your problem with something smaller? Learn out how to do a combo box with just a page or two and then appy that to your big problem. That's how I'd do it. - MOD

  • Podcast Producer Youtube workflow fails. Script produces runtime errors

A guide was written regarding creating a Podcast Producer workflow for YouTube. Unfortunately, the completed script (even with all of the relevant API bits installed properly) returns an exception when trying to upload the video (client ID, data API have been substituted into the script). The Java script compiles and runs. However, when it failed, I decided to toString() the exception which was called and found out that Google was returning "Bad Request," meaning something with the way the Script was trying to talk to Google was bad. The code is still the reference code with the CID/DevKey subbed in, but because of the Bad Request exception passed by Google, it fails to upload, and thus, fails entirely.
Is there a proper working YouTube workflow anywhere?

Apologies: I just found the Podcast Producer forum, so I'm going to mark this one as answered and repost the question in the Podcast Producer forum now that I know a specific forum for it exists.

    Greetings!
I need to configure MAC OS X Server 10.8.3 with the version of software to work with a dynamic IP via dyn.com / dns / or what is a better way.
And we must port the Podcast Producer to version 10.8 the fact that it supports both free software server package to version 10.7.5 (this package can be downloaded for free on the site aple.com since the program itself is free).

  • How do I set a methods error out value in an XControl?

I'm working with an XControl and have created several methods.  I can see two possible ways to return status when a method is invoked.  One is by providing an output parameter in the method (this is my fall back).  The other would be to set the error out value of the invoke node from within the facade VI.  Is there a way to do this?
From what I've seen in the documentation it appears the facade runs after the method VI, so I don't see how it would be possible to return a value for the method VI to use in it's error out.

    Steven,
In a nutshell, I created an XControl that on the user interface is just a ring control, but always has '<Other...>' as its last option.  If the user selects <Other...> a dialog is presented allowing them to add a new item to the ring.
One of the methods I created is to load the ring strings from an .ini file.  This method has input arguments for the .ini file path and section name.  If there is an I/O error, say the specified .ini file doesn't exist, I was hoping to be able to return error info to the VI invoking the method via the error out on the invoke node.

  • When Podcast Producer says it's running but isn't (apache fails to start)

We've set up a new Intel XServe up with Leopard Server (10.5.6) and are having trouble persuading the Podcast Producer engine from starting.
First, we've set up all the accounts and settings exactly per Apple's PP documentation. Yes, I'm aware of the need to significantly tweak the defaults and that you don't just click "start" We have a fully functioning OD Master on this machine, plus DNS, Kerberos, XGrid, QTSS and our regular web services (on port 80) via Apache.
We try to start the Podcast Producer in Server Admin. The dot goes green, indicating that the service is running. However, no one can connect to it using the Podcast Capture application (and yes, users attempting that are clients of the OD Master).
The logs show what's not happening, but not why:
The pcastserverd_out.log shows many repetitive instances of:
    Thu Jan 22 16:27:33 +1100 2009 -- Starting pcastserverd apache...
pcastserverd_error.log shows many repeated instances of:
Unexpected exception in check: Failed system command: /usr/sbin/httpd -f /usr/share/podcastproducer/apache/httpd.conf -k start (256)
    and, less often:
Unexpected exception starting mongrel instance: Failed system command: /usr/sbin/httpd -f /usr/share/podcastproducer/apache/httpd.conf -k start (256)
I have traced this error to the execution of a ruby file:
    /usr/share/podcastproducer/pcastserverd/lib/pcast_server.rb
where there is a routine that obviously attempts to check "mongrel and apache" for something. Here's the routine:
    def check
    ASLLogger.debug("Checking mongrel and apache...")
    begin
    if (!check_apache)
    start_apache
    end
    if (ServerPreferences.mode == "main")
    @mongrelbase_port.upto(@mongrel_baseport + @num_mongrels - 1) do |portnum|
    start_mongrel(portnum)
    end
    end
    rescue Exception => boom
ASLLogger.error "Unexpected exception in check: #{boom}"
    end
    end
Here's the question: how do I further trace this fault to work out what's going on and how to fix it? Why does SA insist the PP engine is running when evidently it isn't? Why won't this instance of Apache launch properly?
I am assuming that the PP invoked instances of Apache and it's "mongrels" (whatever they are) are using SSL on ports in the 8xxx range, and that these are entirely unrelated to the web services I've already set up for webmail, wikis and blogs elsewhere in SA.
    Your advice is appreciated.

When you are charging what are you plugged into?
You should plug the nano either into a power brick or directly into the back of your computer. Do not use USB hubs, or the USB ports on the front of the computer at first. Just confirm you can get a full charge on the USB connection at the back or from the power brick.

  • Lion & Podcast Producer?

Does anyone have an idea of the implications of Lion on Podcast Producer?  Initially, information on the Apple website seems vague on whether PCP will be included/integrated with Lion Server.  It seems odd to think that support would disappear, but I finding mixed thoughts on how PCP will look in Lion.  Is anyone out there testing a beta version of Lion?

I got from Apple Enterprise that there are 2 different apps - Podcast (as in Server App) and Podcast Producer (which is the legacy app from Snow Leopard Server).  Podcast Publisher in Lion works with Podcast and integrates into the Lion Wikis.  Podcast doesn't require Xgrid to run as where PCP did.  You can still use the workflows from PCP in Podcast.  PCP is in there and we had it running, but opted to go with the new Podcast app.
It's very confusing and not clear at ALL in the Advanced Server Admin manual, but we're finding that the new Podcast app seems to be more user friendly via Podcast Publisher.   In addition, being able to have non-IT people manage the podcasts via the GUI (wikis) as opposed to the CLI pcast commands to edit the feeds is a plus in our environment.
With your error message above, your DNS setting are all good for your server?

  • Installing a new Podcast Producer Server

I have tried a few time to install a podcast producer on a new server. I used the instructions pages 21-30 on the pdf from Apple. They really seem very unclear. i have tried many things to get it working.
First it has you install dns, it has you create a primary zone for pcast.private. I am inside my domain. do i need that?
then i do get it set up. i can log into the wiki. i see my videos. when i go to play them i get the quicktime logo with a ? in it. the problem i think is that it is trying to load the video at http://server.mydomain.org/video.
however i can not get the server to have the default page. when i go to
http:\\server.mydomain.org i can not get there.
i create "a" host for that server in my dns. I can ping the server by that name. Howeve i can not get the web page up in that site name. if i could i am sure i can get the podcast to work.
Are there better instructions out there for setting this up?
    thanks,

Since it's a component of OS X Server, there's a much richer discussion forum for it here:

  • Podcast Producer and Xgrid setup - Jobs don't run

I've successfully setup an xserve here to be part of an OD setup, setup xgrid which is running successfully, and have Podcast Producer up and running and successfully running on the xgrid. However, when i open up podcast producer and go through the workflow process and submit, nothing happens except for temp folders stacking up in the podcast recording directory.
Only thing I could find was this error in the podcast producer logs:
Sat Nov 03 00:07:37 -0400 2007 -- Unknown exception while kicking off xgrid jobs: Fail to set key base: Base directory in /Volumes/Puma/Publisher/Podcast/Recordings/32E631A1-0B26-495B-B363-66FDDDDB233B /properties.plist

Not sure if this will fix your problem, but I was having the same problem until I looked at the specs for XGrid, it has to run on an Intel Mac. This is where you can get the specs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306737
Here is what is in the doc:
    Podcast Capture requirements
Any Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iSight camera (built-in or external) or FireWire DV camcorder
    Podcast Producer Server requirements
Any Mac running Mac OS X Server version 10.5 Leopard
Xsan for optional cluster file services
    Podcast Producer Xgrid rendering requirements
Any Intel-based Macintosh Server or Intel-based desktop Mac (a Mac Pro, for example)
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or Mac OS X Server version 10.5 Leopard
At least 1 GB of memory (RAM) plus 512 MB of additional RAM per processor core
At least 50 GB of available disk space
Xsan for optional cluster file services
    Quartz Extreme-enabled video chipset
Note: Quartz Extreme support can be verified in the Graphics section of Apple System Profiler.
Note: If a system is providing multiple Podcast services (for example, Podcast Producer and Podcast Producer Xgrid rendering), the system needs to meet both requirements.

  • Share from FCP X to Podcast Producer Problem

    Hello,
I have a strange (what I think is strange) problem.  I can Share to Podcast Producer from iMovie and I believe QuickTime but I cannot do it in FCPX.  It lets me set it up and connect to the server but the Publish button is never highlighted.  I don't get any errors or any other indication that something is wrong.  Is there a permission or other setting that needs to be turned on to allow FCPX to do this?
    Thanks,
    Todd

Apparently nobody else has ever had this problem or there are no suggestions for what the problem could be?

  • Podcast Producer 2, Jobs Failing

We are in the process of setting up our xserve for podcast producer, but I am running into an issue.
When I submit a podcast, the job shows up in Xgrid Admin but then fails shortly after. When I look at the individual job log, it fails on the same task each time:
task "import-plugin-movie-generated" state change to "Failed"
task "publish-plugin-movie-generated" state changed to "Failed"
When I go to Server Admin>Podcast Producer>Logs>Podcast Producer Server Error Log I get the following error.
/usr/share/podcastproducer/pcastserd/lib/watcher/watcher/watcher.rb:#in 'start' :Ruby threads cannot be used in RubyCocoa without patches to the Ruby interpreter
Please let me know if you have any suggestions, as I can't find really anything about this error online or in any other documentation.

This group is usually reserved for issues specific to the Xserve itself and you are more likely to get an answer - or at least get more experienced eyes on your problem in a more appropriate group. Like the Podcast Producer discussion group:

A very technical discussion of this issue - or at least a very similar one is here at StackOverFlow:

  • Xgrid Job fails on Podcast Producer

Hi all. This is on a fresh install of Server 10.6 with all updates to 10.6.2, repaired permissions, rebooted, etc. I enabled Podcast Producer using its Setup Assistant. Created a test user, and Podcast Capture worked fine on uploading to their podcast, using the default Single Source with small movies. Uploaded 4 episodes. Then, all of a sudden, it stopped working, and I get this

    Thu Dec 10 11:34:53 -0500 2009 -- Xgrid Job: 14 is Failed
This is using both the Podcast Capture app or the web based Capture app, on the server or from other computers. In the error log I get this:

Is this relevant? Already erased drive and reinstalled everything twice, on this Mac Pro, 2.8 GHz Quad Core Xenon.
