Setup USB printer wirelessly using Leopard Server

Heres my problem:
I have a HP Designjet 130nr. It does NOT have an ethernet connector at all, I connect it via USB.
I have it connected upstairs to a G5 tower (the tower running Leopard Server) and the G5 is connected to an AirPort Extreme. I have have unsuccessfully tried to find the printer via AppleTalk but it just will not be found. I do NOT want to connect the printer directly to the AirPort because I want to limit the users who have access to it. I have connected to the printer using Bonjour, but it will only find the printer, it won't actually print anything... And it won't give me any control over who has access to it...
I am trying to use Workgroup Manager and Server Admin to setup the printer and limit the use of the print to specific users and also set the limit of those users quotas.
Thank you for any help you can give, if I have been too vague please let me know how I can clarify!

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I have never configured a USB printer via Server Admin. All of our printers have Ethernet so I have them configured via LPD and advertise them via Bonjour. I also don't use AppleTalk, I've never liked it as a protocol as its unstable with large spool files. So I cannot reply based on experience but I would still expect you to be able to see the advertised printer if AppleTalk is enabled on your server and clients.
Note that 10.6 doesn't support AppleTalk, so if there are any 10.6 clients you would have to look at using some other protocol.
Note that you don't have to use Server Admin to share the printer. I suggest you just install it first as a local printer on the server and then share it to check if the clients can first of all see it and print to the share. If that succeeds then you can look at using Server Admin to control the access to the printer and to set how the printer can be found on the network.
I suggest you have a read of the following document about Print Service Administration.

I can't print wirelessly using Airport Express.  I have my HP printer connected to a USB hub, and the hub to the Airport Express, but when I select the HP from the printer list, my MacBook says the printer is "off-line" - even when it is not.  I've tried several USB connectors, and several different ports on my USB hub; same result.  I need to have the HP connected to the hub 'cause from there it's connected to our desktop Mac.

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

  • HT4260 Can I make a USB printer wireless with a bridged Airport Extreme?

I am trying to make my USB printer wireless, and am using my AE as a bridged router. Is there a way for the printer to work when connected to it?

The fact that the AE is bridged should not stop the printer being available to the network when plugged into AE..
If you are having issues, are you setting up the network printer correctly.
One big lack in the new utility is the missing printer section.. which is available in the old utility.
There are methods to load 5.6 utility into ML so you can actually see what is going on. Very helpful to have it.. strange to miss it out.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Can I use Leopard Server for a few things without a static IP/DNS mapping?

Caveat: I'm pretty capable at setting up and running macs, but not a crack server admin or anything like that. I don't write code and my eyes start to glaze over when you start talking about Kerbos and the like...
Question: I'd like to use Leopard server for a few things on my local network - with some vpn access to the same services:
    - iCal server (the most important feature) for 3 users
    - File server services for Time Machine (yes, base Leopard can do this)
    - vpn access into the iCal server for one user
Do I have to go through the headache of switching over from a dynamic IP to a static IP, setting up DNS mapping, etc? Or is there a simpler way?
    Any help appreciated. Thanks

  • Sharing Canon Wireless Network Printer on Snow Leopard Server

Trying to setup a wireless printer to share on the LAN via Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server, however the sharing option is not available.
    Configuration:
Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server (latest updates etc.) (static IP)
    TimeCapsule Wireless network (static IP)
Canon MP620 Wireless printer (static IP)
    Two MacBook's (DHCP)
Printer drivers (network drivers, and scanner drivers) from Canon installed on Mac Mini and printer is connected and setup via wireless network on Mac Mini; it is operational and can print from Mac Mini directly without problem
Sharing option on Mac Mini for the printer is missing in Print Settings (missing checkbox), so unable to share the printer on MacBook's via the Mac Mini, also under Sharing Settings the printer option is not there (assuming because share this printer option is not in the print settings)
Ideally, I want to setup the printer on the Mac Mini as a print server, without having to hardline (USB) the printer to the Mac Mini.
Thanks for any help, ideas etc.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
On OS X Server, you need to use the Server Admin utility (Applications > Server ) to share the local print queue. This requires the Print service to be added/started and then a queue created for the local printer.
Seems unusual that you would want to share a wireless printer from the server. The MacBook 'clients' would still be able to connect directly to this printer without having to connect via the server share so without knowing all the details of your setup it just seems an odd requirement.

  • Adobe acrobat 9 pdf files wont print wirelessly using Snow Leopard

I am able to use Acrobat using a wireless router.
    Try the following:
Get the latest update from Manufacturer. Then go to printer setup utility and remove the current version. ( Do this anyway even if the same version).
Next plug Printer into a direct USB Connection. Now install Driver. Go back to Printer Setup Utility. and add Printer.
Now print a document, to verify printer works.
Now quit application, then shut down Computer.
Now switch usb printer connector from USB connector on computer to USB connector on your router.
    Restart Computer.
Now open an application that uses a printer and open a document. go to Printer and Look for the Following:
Disregard the printer I have listed here that's my printer. If you see a Printer like this add to list by choosing the printer.
Now go to Printer Setup verify it has been added. Make it the Default printer.
Now Acrobat "should" be able to print from you printer.
(Please note information is given by an Experienced User of Acrobat. I am not an employee of Adobe.)

  • Compatible Wireless and USB Printer Lists using AirPort Extreme

Long night researching this issue. I bought a new AirPort Extreme (802.11n) yesterday and I LOVE IT. Very fast and no lag whatsoever. Then I tried to setup our printer via the USB port and BAM - issues.
Here is a short summary of what I learned (thanks to all the guys who posted a lot of this info on separate posts)
    - Unfortunately not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. - The AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
Go to iFelix for a "short" list of compatible and incompatible printers:
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/index.html
Please note, there is a workaround for "some" printers - trial and error is the only way to see if your printer will work:
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1300.html
I believe most retail printers that use Postscript, PCL3, PCL4, PCL5 and PCL6 interfaces should work.
I learned the hard way that printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to the computer directly and will not work via the AirPort Extreme USB port.
Here is a list from IBM support of HP printers and which interface they use:
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas1ba0863cfa6463903862569c10078c9 03
    GOOD LUCK!!!!

Remember that when you attach a USB printer to the AirPort, the AirPort will perform the function of a Print Server. As you can imagine, if the server cannot locate the printer (for whatever reason), it will treat it as unavailable and not attempt to share it out.
However, like you expect, you wouldn't have to restart a dedicated print server, and thus, you shouldn't have to do the same with the AirPort. Of course, anything is possible.
I would suggest a couple of things to see if they would help: 1) Even though you have a single printer attached, I would suggest in investing in a powered USB hub. Plug the hub into the USB port first, and then, the printer into the hub. You can then power cycle the printer as required. 2) Completely remove the printer and associated printer drivers that were installed and reinstall it.

  • Shared usb-printer unreachable in leopard

i upgraded to leopard and cannot access our printer in the office anymore.

can anyone help? tried everything i know - no results
    thanks,

You need to configure the queue for your USB printer using vi Server Admin, using OS X Server's Print Services.
You cannot do it using System Prefs > Print & Fax.

  • How can I make my USB Hub Wireless using TimeCapsul

I have TimeCapsul and I use a 7-port Dynex USB hub. It has an external AC powersupply so it does not need to draw power from what it is plugged into. I would like to take advantage of what apple advertises that TimeCapsul can do, making my USB Hub wireless. However when I plug the hub into the TimeCapsul, the things i have plugged into the hub aren't available. Am i doing something wrong?

The USB port on the TC is used for a disk drive or printer.  It doesn't make any other devices accessible.  For disk drive or printer you must configure the TC using Airport Utility to share the device, and you need to turn on Printer Sharing and/or File Sharing via the Sharing preferences.  Read the manual that came with the TC for configurations.

  • About connecting USB printer(s) from Windows Server (NT or above).

My friend have a Power Mac G4 which have Mac OS 9 installed.
He found out that he could not add a printer in his LAN, which used Windows NT server as the main server in the LAN. He have tried to configure "AppleTalk" and "find neighbourhood" in USB printer sharing, both trials were unsuccessful. In find neighbourhood, it returns "No zones found".
He was sure that all cables and LAN cables are properly plugged to the G4 and was sure that the networking device in G4 works fine.
    Any solutions to this?
    Thanks.

  • HT3500 Is it possible to connect via wi-fi a Windows 7 PC to a printer configured to print wirelessly using Macs?

We have three Macs and a PC using Windows 7 in our family. While the three Mac users are able to print wirelessly to the printer using an Airport Express, I haven't been able to figure out how to connect the PC to the printer. The printer is simply not seen by the PC on the same network. Is it possible to connect both a PC and a Mac to the same printer using w-fi?

Download and run the installer from there (just like installing any other program on Windows). Windows systems require this to be installed and bizarrely it doesn't auto-install along with AirPort Utility.
