Several random osx 10.4 questions

hello- i just updated from 10.2 and im having a few problems.
1) i cannot install windows media player or AIM (4.7, for mac). i download the files and they come up as unreadable. is there a solution?
2) is there a way to change the 'short name' of your computer? you can click the name in the finder window, and yes change it, but the computer then treats the new name like a new user account and ive had to reset my settings, bookmarks, programs, etc. several times now.
is there a way to safely do it without interferring with the user account?
i had another, but i cant think of it right now.
any help with the above questions would be great.
thanks!

Just so you know, there is a Tiger forum, which might have more answers for you, since not all users in this forum have Tiger. However, for you 2nd question take a look at these sites:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106824
http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/mac911/2004/05/000198/index.php
They should help you change your shortname. HTH.

I've uploaded our solution to the random quiz in captivate to

    Good Morning,
I am going to have to create several instances on one box using solaris 10 zone technology. Each zone haveing it's own instance. I need to confirm whether or not that all those instances can use one listerner or does each instance need it's own separate port such as 1521, 1522 etc. for it's listener.

    <br>Hi,
    <br>
<br>As you are going to be using Solaris Zones would you really want to have one listener for all of the instances?
    <br>
<br>Surely the point of using Zones is separation of the environments so why would you want to try and break that by not having separate listeners? If you aren't interested in isolating the environments then Zones seems like an added headache you can do without.
    <br>
<br>On the question of ports... each Zone is going to have its own IP address so it really doesn't matter what port you choose. They could all have the same port for their individual listeners or they could all have different ports. Makes no odds really.

  • Migrating From Exchange To OSX Mail Server Question

I'm switching my small business to a Mac based office from Windows. I'm thinking about OSX Server (or Snow Leopard Server when it comes out). I'm comfortable with everything about it, but not being much of an IT person, I have a question about the Mail Server.
We have 7 employees. Each will have his own email account. We will also have one "group" email account that we will all need to access. On my current Exchange server, it's no problem. I haven't read anything about the Mac Servers that allows this from ALL the clients. Can this be done with the Mac servers and if so, where can I read about it?
I will also need to be able to manage the server remotely. I assume there's no problem with that, yes?
Sorry for what may seem to be naive questions, but this whole point is to be able to get rid of the PC crap and all the complications that come with it. Thank you in advance for your help.

You can set Access Control Lists on mailboxes allowing other users to have access to them. So, your Group email account would be an eighth user per se, and the other seven users would see this user's Inbox in their folder list.
Note that there is no GUI for doing this. You either need to use the command line tools to configure this or a third party GUI tool called SirAdmin.
Yes, OS X Server can be managed remotely, using a variety of tools ranging in complexity and power. It is UNIX after all

  • Mac OSX file format questions

I am using Quicken 2005 and these days I backup my accounts to my USB flash drive. In the past i backed up to zip disk or floppy. backing up to a floppy would be problematic since the Mac version has never supported multiple disk backup which the PC version even to this day still supports. And besides floppy disk access has always been slower and more problematic on the Mac for some reason.
    Okay here is my question.
My quicken files end with a Backup-file.qdfm extension.
But whenever I upload these files (sadly they have to be dragged an dropped with Fetch) they appear as a folder on my FTP server. So I have been using the classic version of Transmit instead of the native OSX version of Fetch to upload my Quicken backup accounts.
My question if I ever had a major disaster (this has happened before) would the folder (what it appears to be) on my FTP server save me or should I be zipping this quicken file before I upload? I have been using Quicken since 1998 for the Mac and PC, and have thousands of bank transactions that are valuable and that I do not want to lose.
Encase you cannot understand what I mean here is a screen shot. The file above is the Quicken 2006 file, and the one below is a older Quicken 2001 file that I uploaded when I had my Performa.
    http://johnw.freeshell.org/voicemails/screenshot.png
    Thank you,
    John

One way to know for sure would be to download the file (folder) and open it in Quicken. Of course I would make and keep a backup on your local drive before doing this.
Like you I have been using Quicken for many years but I back mine up to another hard drive, then I back everything on it up on a regular basis to a CD. I also use .Mac and the backup program included with it to back up my Quicken files off site. The .Mac solution is automatic, and takes place daily which is nice.
"But whenever I upload these files (sadly they have to be dragged an dropped with Fetch)'
Do you want to automate the process? If so, that is what Automator and Applescript are for. Surely you could write a simple script to do it for you.

  • Satellite - randomly the arrow keys, question mark key and z key will not work

Sometime the arrow keys, question mark and z key work fine (like now) and sometimes they just don't work at all (like a minute ago).  I will just be typing and they will work and then just stop working, then work again.  They either all work or all do not work. This has been happening since about a week after I got the computer.  It is so annoying.  Can you please help me fix this problem?  I have a Satellite T135-S1309.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
I've posted recently about keyboard problem, and have tried everything as everybody else, finally and oddly :-) the solution for my problem was to reconnect little flat cable that connects keyboard and MB :-D shown in step 10 on the following link:
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-X205/take-apart-laptop-2.htm
..so maybe your keyboard somehow strangely detached itself from mother-board just a bit and started creating all sorts of strange problems as mine... one cable line was without contact because flat cable was not attached properly anymore and mentioned keys stop working... I have also downloaded keyboard tester software that helped me find all keys and combination of keys that stop working ... so guys, try that and good luck!

  • MAC OSX Tiger iLife Question

I just installed Tiger and so far everything is going great. I just wanted to know if the following applications were/are available to me after I installed Tiger.
    iLife, iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, GarageBand.
It shows these applications in the manual towards the end of the booklet, but I cannot seem to find them in the applications on my MAC..
I was wondering if anyone could help me because I had iDVD, iphoto when I first got my mac..
    Thanks,

Hey Klaus Thanks for your reply. Oh so my original OSX disks that came with my mac would have the older versions of the iLife, iphoto, idvd, imovie. Now if I were to re-install these applications, would I be able to update them using the updates feature in mac? And if I dont have the original operating system disk, could I just download them from the apple website?
    Thanks again,

  • OSX Re-install Question

If I re-install OSX on my MacBook Prq what sequence of events happen? Do I lose everything presently installed such as contacts info, e-mail accounts, data, etc

If you reinstall OS X and everything works correctly, the install just over writes the system.
I never trust my data to everything working correctly so I always backup first just in case.

  • Souping Up Lombard 333--OSX, DVD, Partition Questions

    1) Am I right in thinking the reason I could not use my eBay iMac G5 Panther DVD is because (darn) OSX does not support the DVD function on the Lombard 333? Could I install it using my own iMac G5 and an ethernet connection? Will it have to be CDs?
    2) Do I need to partition the drive if it is larger than 8 MB on a Lombard, or is that just the Wallstreet?
Right now I have a 10 GB HD and 320 MB RAM. It came with a 4 GB HD. The 10GB drive was already partitioned with 8 GB Jaguar and 2 GB 9.2. I mostly use the 9, though, because the X doesn't see my wavelan PC card and 9.2 uses it as Airport. And also because I still like 9, the OS that Would Not Die. I would like to upgrade to Panther and re-allot the partitions to give 9 more.
Tried buying a 20 GB drive for it on eBay, and it won't spin up no matter what I do with it. I think it's dead.
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Is there a minimum size for a partition for OSX?
Depending on the version of Mac OS X and the options you choose during the installation, the space requirement can be anywhere from 1.5GB to 10GB or more. Approximate minimum values are 2.0GB for 10.1, 3.1GB for 10.2, 3.8GB for 10.3, and 4.3GB for 10.4; to ensure that Mac OS X has enough space to function properly, set the partition to at least double the minimum requirement unless you're using a computer which limits the Mac OS X partition to 8GB.
Does it matter which partition X is on?
It will not have much effect on your machine.

  • Upgrade OSX 10.5 to OSX 10.6 Question

I  have a 2008 "Black" 13" Macbook (Pro) running OSX 10.5 that I would like to upgrade to 10.6. I also have a 2009 Aluminum 13" Macbook Pro that came with an OSX 10.6 Install DVD. Can I use the 10.6 install DVD from the newer machine to upgrade the older machine? Will this be a complete install or an upgrade (i.e. - will user data be wiped out) and are there any special procedures required before starting the install (other than backing up the original load)? There's also a companion Applications Install DVD with the 10.6 DVD - should I install this after installing the 10.6 DVD?

A Retail Snow Leopard DVD installs 10.6.3. As long as the computer came from the factory with any earlier version of OS X, you can use the Snow Leopard DVD to install Snow Leopard. However, discs that come with a computer are only intended for use with that model. They may or may not work on other models. Furthermore, the software license restricts the installation to only one CPU at a time. So, what you propose is illegal.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.

  • A (sort of) random link generator html question...

    Hello everyone,
Thank you in advanced for taking the time to read this.
I have a site in which I have made ten or so pages with different content on each one. I want to create a link on a main page that will take the user to a different one of those pages each time they click a button. A "random" link generator of sorts, only the "random" is my 10 pages of content.
Is anyone aware of the html that will do this? I am just savvy enough to understand the basics, and any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Severe random white noise problem...who to contact?

i primarily use logic with the vienna symphonic library software and generally things have been great...however.
occasionally when selecting notes in the piano roll severe blasts of maximum volume usually painful white noise will shoot out of the speakers.
this is quite unsettling for many reasons.
i've noticed some threads around the web about this (for example http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2144002&tstart=30 ) and i would like to do whatever i can to help apple fix this.
for me it's pretty specific as it has only happens when editing in the piano roll in a track that has a vsl instrument loaded into it and i click and drag to select multiple midi notes. perhaps it's a vsl issue but the thread i mentioned above suggests there's an apple issue. i'll post this on the vsl forum too.
what's more disturbing is it's happening more frequently but i haven't changed anything in my setup that seems remotely related to this except upgrade to 10.6.3 today which didn't help.
i'm using logic 8.02, snow leopard 10.6.3 on a macpro 2.66 quadcore with 8bg of ram.
so if anyone has any insight on how to fix this it would be wonderful or if someone knows of an address i can send my circumstance to that may help apple fix it that would be great too.

  • Urgent OSX data recovery question

    Hello,
I am in urgent need of assistance with recovering some data. Long story short I have a XServe that had two 40gb ADMs in it. I successfully backed up each disk to DMG files, then upgraded the ADMs to contain 500gb modules. I then blew out the megaraid config and set the new drives up as mirrors. I am finding now however that one of the DMGs that wasn't supposed to contain anything critical actually did, and when I try to open it I get an error that "no mountable file systems" are in it.
To top things off, earlier today the original drive was readable, but I wanted to try and boot back to it to see how the server was set up before. I popped it back into its ADM, and via the Install CD in Terminal I ran "megaraid -create auto" to try and make it boot to it again. The problem is that not only did that not work, but since then the drive cannot be read via any means.
Essentially, I have a drive that thinks it isnt even partitioned any more and a DMG file that won't open, and it is critical that I get some data from it. Does anyone know how I could possibly repair one of the two? The files I need are under the Library folder in a very specific location.

You'll get a cogent answer posting to the OS X Server forum at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96

  • Mac OSX Expanding & Format Question

When I originally ordered my Mac Pro 2 years ago, I ordered it with only the standard 250gb drive.
As many know, the MP only has 4 internal SATA drive bays, and I want to maximize my space for future content so I will put in 4 1TB drives, with the idea of having the primary 1TB drive partitioned for the Mac operating system (the other partition will be for applications and documents). The other three drives will be for (1) music, (2) pictures, and (3) video.
I have an offsite backup solution for all of my media files, so Time Machine will only be backing the operating system files to an external USB drive. (and offsite will also backup Time Machine stored on the USB drive)
What is the most efficient way of making the switch to a new hardrive with all my files? Is their someway I can use time machine to mirror it onto the new drive without having to reformat and start from scratch?
Anyone know of a good way to do this? Is this even a good idea?

As many know, the MP only has 4 internal SATA drive bays
Only? The previous Power Mac G5 ONLY had 2...
So if you are replacing the current 250GB drive, the easiest way is to install the first 1TB drive in the second slot. Download +Carbon Copy Cloner+ or SuperDuper. Run either of those utilities to clone the 250GB drive to the 1TB drive.
When that process completes, run System Preferences Startup pane to select the 1TB drive for startup, and restart. After making sure it is running as expected, you can swap the 250GB drive with the 1TB drive, and install the other 1TB drives.
You can use the Time Machine archive. But for duplicating your current drive as it is right now (no need to go back to a previous state), a cloning utility is more efficient.
If you want to save a few bucks, you should just keep the 250GB drive and add 3 1TB drives. 250GB is plenty of space for your system, apps, and basic docs.
