OSX Re-install Question

If I re-install OSX on my MacBook Prq what sequence of events happen? Do I lose everything presently installed such as contacts info, e-mail accounts, data, etc

If you reinstall OS X and everything works correctly, the install just over writes the system.
I never trust my data to everything working correctly so I always backup first just in case.

2011 MacBook Pro, 64 bit i7 quad core, upgraded to Lion OSx, Bootcamp installed with Windows 7, wanting to install Windows 8 (don't ask), tried downloading/installing bootcamp 5.0.5033 (both on the mac/windows partitions (actually using a parallel to run Windows)), error message something similar to bootcamp doesn't support this Windows
So the question is am I doing something wrong? Should I just try and install windows 8 through my windows 7 partition and see if I can use the bootcamp 5.05033. Or do I solely have to use the bootcamp to install Windows 8? I'm not too familiar with bootcamp and how it runs.

if you're using parallels and full bootcamp then you're making it 100% more troublesome for youself then it needs to be
bootcamp is running windows directly on the hardware this give full memory and cpu and 3d video game power
running windows in parallels is running a virtual machine where one can't run powerful games and the like but one can have it in a window and change fast between osx and windows
parallels as the only virutal machine (as far as I know) support not have the operating system as a file on the osx harddisk but can access a bootcamp parition as virtual machine but without the benefits bootcamps provides
it's a service parallels provide for those who want both to play games in normal bootcamp and sometimes use windows in a virutal machine
just install it like a normal virtual machine and you need not worry about bootcamp drivers and the likes
plus it would mean that the windows part would be a part of the timemachine bacup of osx
which it is not when it's in bootcamp

  • Can OSX be installed onto a PC?

Sorry, kind of long.... but expresses what I'm looking for, trying to do, and why.
I need a new computer. We used to have two, and then one caught fire (watercooled, developed leak, coolant dripped onto electronics...). Now we have one remaining computer to share. I have options: I can build one from scratch and select my OS of choice (Win8, Linux, Apple), or I can buy a computer from the store and go with either Win8 or Apple, or buy one from the store and wipe it's hard drive and install my OS of choice. Here's the problem.... Macs are insanely expensive and well out of my price range at $1,000+ (even the Mac Mini, with decent performance options plus the needed soft/hardware to get started), Linux requires a lot of user involvement to make it work with everything, and I absolutely despise Microsoft's new Windows 8 abortion.
So here's my main question: can I install OSX onto a PC? Regardless of whether I build it from scratch or buy a ready-made computer from the store and wipe it's hard drive free of Win8?
Secondary questions, assuming "yes" to my first: I looked up the OSX software here on Apple's website, and it's like $26 or something, far cheaper than any Windows offering (even at their upgrade price). Is this a full version of OSX, or an update that just tweaks your current version to bring it up to speed with new stuff? If it's an upgrade, can you buy a full version? Or if it is a full version, can it be installed by a common user onto a fresh hard drive without having to be an Apple employee with special passcodes, permissions, etc, or without having to send it off to Apple so they can install it for you? And will it work with PC components? I've read of people taking Macs, removing OSX, and installing Windows onto it, so theoretically the two OS's don't have problems recognizing and using each other's individual components which means nothing's proprietary....right?
Thanks for any help you guys can provide! I really don't want to be forced to use Windows 8, fuss with Linux, or take out a second mortgage on my house just to afford a Mac. I'm trying to find a compromise of affordability, internal hardware upgradability (which Apple doesn't let you do), and user friendliness (I can deal with Linux if needed, but would rather have something that just works).

Awww, ****. Oh well, it was worth a shot. Thanks for the quick replies guys. I guess I need to go back to looking into Linux..... Linux is a bit of a hassle (trade-off for being free?), but I refuse to have anything more to do with Microsoft now that they have ruined Windows to complete and utter uselessness. It's a kids toy now, not a useful work program for adults. Vista and Win7 were bad enough (although still usefull), but Win8 is a joke.  *sigh*
Thank you all, you were very helpful.  :-)

My new iMac has recently had OSX Lion installed on it and now when I start the machine it looks like its updating something every time, and the wireless doesn't work. So I restart and everything is OK - until I have to start up again the next time - then I have to repeat this again! Any help appreciated.

I've been having the same issue, but have just discovered something on my own that hasn't been pointed out in any of the forums I've visited.  In what I thought would be a vain attempt to help myself, I went to System Preferences, Users & Groups, and then clicked on Login Items.  I discovered that one of the Items that was listed to open automatically upon login was iTunes Helper and that there was an exclamation point beside it indicating that it was incompatible.  I simply deleted that item and now I don't have the situation you described and my wireless is connected.  Hope this helps!

    HI ..
The only way to reinstall OS X on a Mac already running v10.9 is to use OS X Recovery.
Starrtup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to repair the startup disk and reinstall OS X.

  • Free download, and install question

    Free download, and install question.
I need to buy a larger h/d, but till then I would like to put as many programs as possible on a external usb drive that I have hooked up to my PC.  I've been able to do this with some other programs, and would like to try it with my Adobe Reader and Flash.  When down loading and installing it does not give me the option to install in a defferent location other then my C: drive.  Can this be done?  Thanks you?

From the MSI you have to create a MST (Transforms). In the MST create now the new property INSTALLDIR=F:\, where F: is your USB-drive. If you use then the command
    msiexec.exe /i [MSI] transforms=[MST]
Adobe Reader should be installed to F:

  • Can't start up with Mac osx after installing windows on partition

    Hello guys.
I installed windows on a partition of 100gb and I restarted the iMac so I can log on to Mac osx.
I hold down the option key after I hear the sound but only the windows disk appears there.
I tried the DVD that came with my Mac by holding down the "c" key but nothing happened. I was holding it down for 2-3 minutes.
    I need some help here
Is there a way to boot Mac again?
Is there a chance I deleted Mac osx by installing windows?
And if there is how the **** am I getting it back since the osx DVD does not boot??
    Thanks in advance

The Macbook will not allow you to startup with your Install DVD while you have Open Firmware password enabled. Disable that first, then try again....

Launch the Open Firmware application to disable it.

  • HELP: Fresh OSX Install Question...

    Greetings!,
I am doing a clean reinstall of OSX in my MacBook Pro and I have a question, when I booted from the OSX disc I went to the installer top bar menu and clicked "Utilities" and then "Disk Utility", after that I selected my HDD from the Disk Utility menu and went to the "erase" tab within Disk Utility. After that I put the new name of the formatted HDD and clicked the "Zero-out" option from the "options" button in DU. Aferwards, I clicked the "erase" button and the warning box dropped telling me that all the data in the partition was going to be lost, but before I clicked the erase button I noticed that I've mispelled the HDD name so I clicked cancel, make the correction to the HDD, and then I just clicked again the "erase" button, and clicked OK in the warning box.
So this is my question, do I run the risk of running into problems after the OSX install is done?
    Thank You for your help.

    Matt Clifton wrote:
Not for that reason. You can call the hard drive whatever you want. I wouldn't put any unusual punctuation marks in it (eg "Drive ##//@*") but otherwise, there should be no problem. And you can also rename it at any time by clicking once on the hard drive icon on your desktop and typing in a new name.
    Matt
Ok. so renaming a drive in SL seems to be easier than I imagined. So I should sleep OK since this will not bring any problems to my install.
    Thank You.

  • Flash Player 9 OSX Install Question???

Greetings! Recently my Flash Player stopped operating, and
prompts came up on screen to go to Adobe's website to download
Flash Player 9 OSX. After double checking which version to
download, I proceded with it's installation. After the download was
over, the prompt came up again as not having the Flash player.
Here's a copy of the prompt:
The page “Macromedia - Flash Player” has content
    of MIME type “application/x-shockwave-flash”,
but you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME
type. A plug-in should be available on this page:
    https://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer
Why does it keep cycling itself back to saying I don't have
the software? Am I missing something here? I've tried so many
times, I've lost count! ANY help, suggestions, etc... would be MUCH
    appreciated.

  • Server OSX 10.5.1 install question

I have an older Mac Server dual 1.0 ghz with 1.5gb Ram. It has a cd drive so I'm connecting it through firewire to a G4 I have. I set the server to firewire mode by holding down the T key during boot then boot off the server CD on the G4. Once the install comes up it says that I don't have enough ram. I figure I could have it select the server to install on but it does seem to allow that. I've tried using Disk Utility and it sees the Mac Server but I'm not sure how to get the installer to load on to it? Can someone please point me into the right direction? Is there a better way through an external firewire drive?
    Thanks,
    RJR

You can clone the installation DVD to a firewire drive and then boot from the firewire drive to perform the install. That may be the easiest method if you have an available firewire drive. If you have another server, you can make the DVD into a NetBoot image and do a network install.

  • OsX Clean Install - What about Bootcamp??

    Hello community!
I have a question. I want to install the new OSX Yosemite on my iMac (Late 2013). There is a HDD with 3TB. On this I have 2 partitions. One with Mavericks, the other one with Windows 8.1 Pro. Now I want to know, what about Bootcamp, when I make a clean install?! Do I need to install Windows Bootcamp again??
I hope, someone can help me!
    Thanks a lot!
    Best Regards
    Kevin

I think that by upgrading there shouldn't be any problems. But clean install on the OS X partition? That's my question too

  • GD2 install question

Trying toi install gd2 on my 'new' g5 xserve.
Following directions found here: "Installing GD on OS X Server 10.5.x" (PDF File) (http://osx.topicdesk.com/content/view/133/41/)
Installing libjpeg went fine. Output for the make is as below:
    UniMatrix-5:gd kaenath$ sudo make install
    Password:
    /bin/sh /SourceCache/php-5.2.8/ext/gd/libtool --mode=install cp ./gd.la /SourceCache/php-5.2.8/ext/gd/modules
    cp ./.libs/gd.so /SourceCache/php-5.2.8/ext/gd/modules/gd.so
    cp ./.libs/gd.lai /SourceCache/php-5.2.8/ext/gd/modules/gd.la
    Libraries have been installed in:
    /SourceCache/php-5.2.8/ext/gd/modules
If you ever happen to want to link against installed libraries
in a given directory, LIBDIR, you must either use libtool, and
specify the full pathname of the library, or use the `-LLIBDIR'
flag during linking and do at least one of the following:
    - add LIBDIR to the `DYLDLIBRARYPATH' environment variable
    during execution
See any operating system documentation about shared libraries for
more information, such as the ld(1) and ld.so(8) manual pages.
    Installing shared extensions: /usr/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/
    Installing header files: /usr/include/php/

RAID5 has performance setbacks with random writes and simultaneous small writes.  If you want good speed and reliability but at the cost of having 2TB of total space, use RAID 0+1.  Most mobos support 0, 1, 0+1, and 5.
Edit: I don't trust really high capacity drives (basically everything over 800GB).  I've read so many reports of failures, I wouldn't want to risk all of my data.  So RAID 0 seems pretty much out of the question.

Please tell me I have not lost priceless pictures, 30 years of music, and important documents. I did a search on the computer for music an it came up empty.
