Shift keys change focus

I have a MacBook running OSX10.6. Someone else was using it the other day and now whenever I hit my Shift key, it changes the focus to either the task bar or the other open app(s). I have reset the keyboard settings in System Preferences, tried another keyboard and still have the same issue. I created a new user account and the Shift key functions properly in the new profile. Any ideas where else to look to restore the normal behavior?
Thanks!

I'm having the exact same problem.
using a mac mini, OS X 10.7.4 and wireless keyboard.

  • Key-changing focus in JLists

    Consider the following JList -
    String[] testData = {"one", "two", "three", "four", "five"};
JList testList = new JList(testData); When testList has focus, pressing 't' will cause the selection to traverse between items beginning with 't'. This also happens when pressing 'f' or 'o', although the behaviour is somewhat inconsistent in all cases (e.g. it doesn't work all of the time).
How to disable this behaviour? The API documentation makes no mention of it, so I assume that it is specific to PLAFs (I use Metal by default). The only solution I have found to work thus far is to invoke the following after JList initialisation -
    EventListener[] listeners = testList.getListeners(java.awt.event.KeyListener.class);
    for(int j=0; j<listeners.length; j++) {
      testList.removeKeyListener((java.awt.event.KeyListener) listeners[j]);
}However, this seems like an absurdly heavy weight solution to such a silly problem. Is there a getter/setter I've not seen? I've already tried tinkering with InputMaps and ActionMaps, but they don't seem to have an effect.
    Cheers,
    Damien.

I tried using the div tag and changing focus to an transparent screen so that it is seamless to the user.
That does not work too. When you change focus by burring and then focus on the transparent screen the cursor acts wierd and remain in wait state all the time.
Any idea what am I doing wrong here?

  • Shift key won't work

I am trying to reset my son's ipod touch.  When asked to login, the shift key changes the letters to numbers and symbols and gives no options for capital letters which means I can't even get the machine configured.  Help please.

First try a reset and try again
    - Reset the iOS device.
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next reset and try setting up via iTunes
    - Then try restoring again.

  • Want it change right shift key to be new paragraph

Hi, I want to change the function of the right shift key to oda new paragraph.   I checked the users guide but it didn't answer my question.

The return key just above the right shift key stars a new paragraph. You'll have to be satisfied with that cause you cannot reprogram they keys.

You do not tell us what OS version you have. In OS 10.8.2, do this:
Apple Menu / System Preferences / Language and Text / Input Sources.
Select the language you want. Mine is set to Canadian English.

  • See the changes with shift key

In iPhoto it was possible to see the result of the different effects or changes applied to a photo by pressing the shift key, is it possible to still do it in Photos OXS?

In Edit mode, press the M (for Master) key.

  • Closing lid to suspend and then resuming causes capslock and shift key failures

When I close the lid of my NB205, the computer enters hibernate.  When I open the lid and press the power key to resume, the computer starts back up but the caps lock key light is on. The keyboard responds the same as if the caps lock were on and the shift key were depressed at the same time.  Typing any letter results in a lower case.  Typing on the upper row of numbers produces the symbols (same as when shift key is depressed).  Also, my bluetooth mouse is not functional but the cursor can be moved using the keypad.
By pressing the caps lock key a couple of times I can get the caps lock key light to go off.  Then the keyboard still functions like the shift key is depressed - producing capital letters plus symbols for the upper row.  I have to press the shift key a couple of times to fix that and then press Fn+F8 to restore bluetooth to get the computer to work correctly.  I tried changing the lid suspend action to Standby in lieu of Hibernate but the result was the same.  I do not have these problems when resuming from hibernate or standby if I enter them using the start/shutdown commands.
The computer worked fine for the first two months before this began. I have tried scanning with McAfee virus scanner and have restored the system to a restore point well before the problems began but nothing helps. Does anyone have any ideas I can try before I return this under the warranty?

Ok - I see the list of issues and will ensure our X300 specialist takes a look at it.
Please do understand that while you have put together a very coherent list, I try to ensure priority to threads in which multiple customers are focused on a single issue, as we deliver the most benefit to the community in working on those.   This forum is primarly a peer to peer discussion forum rather than a Lenovo chat / tech support where we try to solve each and every issue put forth.
Individuals with a long list of issues on a particular machine may find benefit from either contacting technical support and working through their list, or publishing it as you have done and wait for other users of the same system to share their experiences.

  • My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).  The key behaves the same for the laptop keyboard and for an external Apple keyboard?  This just started in last week after 6 months of use

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

    Hi Abu-Bakr,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Notebook and the shift keys not working correctly. I find that in most cases a keyboard that stops responding or some keys don't work is generally a keyboard is stuck cleaning might be the only option. Here is a document on how to clean the keyboard.
If a small vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment is available, use it to clear the keyboard of debris. A can of compressed air can be used to blow out particles that get in between the keys. I would be happy to assist if needed. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Please respond with which Operating System you are running:
Which Windows Operating System am I running?
    Please let me know.
    Thanks.

  • [Solved] Shift key doesn't work correctly

    Hi!
I have a strange problem for a while. If I hold down the shift key and type the computer releases it itself. Example: I press down the shift key and type some upper case chars and suddenly I am writing lower case chars without releasing the shift key! I already tested another keyboard and nothing changed. And I have the feeling that the problem only occurs with Linux, not with Windows, which is installed on the same computer. But I dont know for sure, because I don't spent mach time with windows ;-)
    Here is my xorg.conf:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidiacard"
    Driver "nvidia"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "screen0"
    Device "nvidiacard"
    EndSection
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Builtin Default Layout"
    Screen "screen0"
    EndSection
    And this is my /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <!-- -*- SGML -*- -->
    <deviceinfo version="0.2">

Before that I had a static configuration with the same problem. Any idea?

Okay, the question if the problem occurs in console was good - no it doesn't!
I played a bit and started X11 with only xterm (no windowmanager) and there
were no problem. I had also no problem with openbox and xterm. So I moved
away my xfce-config and started with a clean one. No problem. I add
everything of my config again (one thing after another) - and there are no
problems any more!?!? Don't know what happened, but I could work again,
    thank you!

  • Save for the web - Colors and Shift key

    Hi Everyone,
With CS3 and Save for the Web, while saving a transparent image using GIF, you could use the Eyedropper Tool (i) and hold Shift key to select multiple colors at a time ON the image itself.
Trying this in CS4 and it doesn't look like it's working. Anything changed? No I have to select the colors one at a time and this is painfull when you're on 256 different colors.
    Thanks!

It would appear this functionality is no longer available. Shift clicking on the swatches is, though that doesnt help much here.

  • Selecting Multiple Files With Shift Key

Am I right in understanding that the only way to select multiple files with the Shift key in Finder is by using File view? Seems kinda silly.
    Thank you, Scott

I'm at my Snow Leopard machine right now, and I'm not sure that nothing was changed in Mavericks, but I never noticed that it was.
I have four view modes: Icon, List, Column and CoverFlow.
I almost always use Column view, but I am guessing that you are calling Icon view File view. In Icon view, Shift clicking seems to work the way Command clicking does in Column view (and probably the other views as well): it allows you to add randomly selected files to the selection. In Column view, Shift clicking works like it does for most things (like text selection); it selects every thing between the previous click and the Shift click.

  • Enter and shift keys not working. HELP!!!

A few days ago my mouse started behaving erratically all of a sudden. It would move by itself, click apps, and switch tabs rapidly all on its own. I've had this computer for over 2 years and this has never happened before. Restarting and rebooting into safe mode didn't work, but one user suggested a PRAM reset and that fixed the mouse problem. However, my enter and shift key on the right side do not work now (this is much less annoying than the mouse problem, but still very inconvenient!). Restarting the computer and doing another PRAM reset doesn't work unfortunately. I also used the keyboard viewer to confirm that all but those two keys work. I don't think the issue is with keyboard lint because both keys worked fine before I tried the reset. Booting up in safe mode also doesn't fix the problem. It would be great if I could find a way to fix this here since I won't be able to go to an Apple genius bar until December!

    Hello sandi3s,
The troubleshooting detailed below may help restore functionality to your MacBook Pro's keyboard.
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond

  • Can't get letter "s" into higher case using shift key!

When I press the shift key and the letter "s" at the same time, the computer does nothing and then a few seconds later makes that noise as if you are typing, when not selected in any program.
Should I re-install Leopard or take back to the store, orrrr wait for an Apple update to fix these keyboard issues?

Check whether either the speech or listening keys in the Speech pane of System Preferences have become set to that keystroke, and change the setting if either has been.
