Should I care about BT not available? Or... Is Deep Sleep safe??

As many others here from what I've seen, BT in not available from time to time. I would rather put my MB to sleep rather than shut it down completely. I've downloaded the Deep Sleep Widget and I'm thinking of using this every time BT becomes unavailable. It seems that BT is not available more and more these days.
I don't use BT for anything and I'm wondering if it's safe to use Deep Sleep to put MB to bed each night.
Is it OK to use DS on my MB when BT is MIA?
Thanks

So what does this mean? Does this mean that if I am
going to spawn a thread which updates a Swing
component, that any code which modifies that component
(say setText, or setLocation, etc...), I should wrap
those commands inside Runnable and pass them to
SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait()???If the code that is updating the Swing component is not actually in the Swing thread, then you do have to do that. The Swing thread, by the way, is the one that calls your ActionListeners and other component listeners like them. So you can update Swing components directly from Swing listeners, but otherwise you have to do the invokeAndWait business.
Do I only have to do this if I think there may be
multiple threads accessing the Swing object at the
same thing? I assume so...Yes. And remember that the Swing thread is one of those multiple threads; refer back to the previous comment.
An example I'm dealing with is updating a
JProgressBar. I create multiple threads at startup to
get initial values. These commands take time and it is
much faster to start them all at once rather than run
them sequentially. However, each job then increments
the JProgressBar when it completes. I figured this is
as good example as any of violating this "Thead Safe"
issue, since you have multiple threads trying to
update a single Swing component.Yes, that's a good example.

imho, there is no more reason to decide for SDef.

I have an iPod touch that was given to me, so I don't know much about it. This is the first Apple product I've owned. The specs say it's an iOS 6.1.5
(Model# MC540LL/A) The iPod guide mentions Siri, but I can't find it in the Settings. Should I assume Siri isn't available on this model?
Also, can you tell me how old this iPod is, from the model #?

it could be a 4th gen or lower, if the camera dosent stick out, then its a 4g,
however, it could be a 5g (the only model to have siri) it might of been disabled, to enable siri, you have to reset your ipod touch, then when it a says, use siri? tap use siri.
also if you mesure the screen and it is 3.5 inches then it is a 4g or lower and does not have siri. but the 4g has voice control and its offline, and siri cant be used offline.
    i hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro will not come out of deep sleep unless plugged in

Has anyone had trouble with this? My MacBook Pro (fall 2012) won't wake up from deep sleep unless I plug it in even if the battery is fully charged. It will take it a while to wake up, and then it shows an X in the battery icon for several minutes even when I know the battery is at or near 100%. It eventually shows the percentage and I can unplug it.
I've tried calling support, but the man I talked to didn't really get what I was saying. He kept offering me solutions that didn't really fit my problem. I thought he'd finally understood, and I was supposed to call back after trying a couple of things, but then I got an email from him saying he'd figured out my problem and I didn't need to call back. My MacBook Pro was going into deep sleep, and deep sleep is totally normal. Uh, yeah. I know. That's not the problem. It won't wake up is the problem.
    Running 10.8.4
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Diana

Here's what I've tried so far.
    Reset SMC
    Reset PRAM
    Repair permissions
    Boot in Safe Mode
    Deleted Power Management plist file
Changed screensaver (worked for someone in the discussions forum)
Adjusted Startup/Wake time in Energy Saver (also worked for someone)
Update firmware with 1.8 (suggested for my machine)
    Updated to 10.8.5
Downloaded Smart Sleep--set it to Sleep only, thought it was working for a few days, but machine would not wake up again yesterday and today
Just read about locking the Energy Saver today so will try that.
Mine seems to be connected to the power cord for some reason. I always have to plug it in to wake it up from deep sleep. Then it wakes up ok. The problem isn't awful since I rarely take it with me, but it just shouldn't be happening. My older MacBookPro (2010) never has this problem, but it's still running Leopard.
I have a Genius Bar appt. in a couple of days.

  • Lion not waking up from Deep Sleep with File Fault 2

MBA13, 2011 - Lion 7.1: My MBA doesn't resume after deep sleep (hibernate) in combination with full disk encryption.
Waking the machine up, the logo on the back lights up but there's nothing to see on the screen. After turning off filefault, it's all ok. Do more people share this experience?
    Regards

This problem has spontaneously resolved itself. Despite what I wrote in my last message, I did not turn off FileVault
Now when I run out of power (triggering deep sleep) and then plug in my computer, instead of the system hanging, I get the usual power-on FileVault unlock screen. After a few seconds (but not a full boot sequence), I then get my regular unlock screen (as if I had just woken up the screensaver).
I haven't applied any software updates (including the recent MBA EFI update), so unfortunately I can't say why this started working for me. I did recently change some settings: I set the system to only require a password 1 minute after going to sleep (instead of immediately); and I gave a second user permission to unlock the computer from power up.

  • Should I care about "Damaged Database" files in ~/Library/Syndication/ ?

    Hi, friends —
    I haven't used RSS much.
I'm curious: What is the purpose of the database files contained in the ~/Library/Syndication folder — and is there any reason to save the several "Damaged" Database files that are retained there?
At the moment, this folder contains a "Database3" and four "Damaged" Databases (~old), one of which is labeled "Broken." Each file is ~8–20 MB.
From the name and contents (I opened and perused a "Damaged Database" file using TextEdit), I'm guessing these are associated with RSS...?
    Thanks!
    Dean

Hi, macjack and Dr. Smoke —
Muchas gracias to you both for your thoughtful replies!
I'd just finished restarting my eMac after removing the Damaged Databases to my desktop per macjack's suggestion when I saw your message, Dr. Smoke. Thanks for your analysis and for the citation.
I had also searched the KnowledgeBase (9 results) and ADC (3) for resources on syndication, but hadn't had a chance yet to read the Safari RSS Developer Release Note. As you've noted, it comes to the point of my question —
Quoting from the Note for anyone who stumbles across this thread and is interested:
    "Purging the Database
Safari RSS stores all news articles in a database. There is not yet any mechanism to control how long articles live, or to delete articles on demand, so the database will grow monotonically.
If the database is taking up too much disk space, you can use the following workaround to delete it. You won't lose any of your subscription data (that's stored in Safari's bookmarks) and the SyndicationAgent will re-fetch all current articles the next time it runs, but older articles will be lost.
        1.   Quit Safari.
        2.   Quit the SyndicationAgent process by entering "killall SyndicationAgent" in a Terminal window.
        3.   Move the directory ~/Library/Syndication to the Trash, or delete it."
    [Emphasis added.]
Thanks for pointing out the potential for growth of this database; it may be worth keeping an eye on for some folks — depending on RSS usage, I guess. Seems an odd design concept to me.
My current Database3 file covers ~ the last 9 weeks — but this may not be comparable to others', since I haven't too big a collection of RSS feeds.
I was ~surprised to find so little documentation about SyndicationAgent on Apple's website (no Man page, etc.). Does that color me naïve?
I scanned through my (Text-archived) log files without finding any close correlations between SyndicationAgent or Safari entries and these databases (in terms of time). Since the latest "Damaged Database" file is dated 4-½ months ago, this issue isn't a big concern — as I said, just curious...
    Thanks again!
    Warm regards,
    Dean

  • Should I care about a dead pixel?

I just got my replacement and I noticed a black dead pixel on the top right. I hate idea of waiting another month or being too picky. I thought I read someone had posted something you can try to fix pixels.

    Kappy wrote:
You will find that many displays have one or two dead pixels, and this is considered normal. Apple will not replace a display with one dead pixel.
Whether it's 'considered normal' by Apple or not is irrelevant. They only state this knowing that it will put some people off from doing anything about it. As it's perfectly possible for Apple to produce a Mac without dead pixels, there's no reason to accept anything less. Everyone pays their hard-earned money to buy a new Mac. It isn't a lottery as to whether you get a flawless display or not. If I get a perfect example and yours comes with dead pixels, wouldn't you expect yours to have the same level of quality as mine? Would you be happy knowing it was possible to have a dead-pixel-free display but got the next one off the production line? Whether you use your 14 day 'cooling off' period to return your Mac due to dead pixels, and here in the UK we pay no restocking fee, or whether you insist on a replacement instead is up to you. You are entitled to receive a fully working machine and that includes ALL the pixels.

  • Cpufrequtils: Why should I care, and acpi-cpufreq vs. p4_clockmod

I'm a cpufrequtils newbie. In the years I've been running Arch on my laptop, I've never set it up.
I wonder, why should I care about cpufrequtils? What should I know about the technology as a laptop user? Does the fact that I rarely unplug make a difference?
I also wonder what module I should be using for frequency scaling. The cpufrequtils article recommends acpi-cpufreq, but the article for my specific laptop recommends p4_clockmod (for some unspecified reason).
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just modprobe both acpi-cpufreq and p4-clockmod, only one of them should be able to load.
    the article wrote:
For older Intel CPUs, the command above may return with:
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq ([...]/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device
In this case, replace the kernel module acpi-cpufreq with speedstep-centrino, p4-clockmod or speedstep-ich.
CPU frequency scaling saves power and keeps your processor cooler. It's worth using on a desktop or a server, not just a laptop.
If you use the ondemand governor, and add:
    (sleep 5 && echo 11 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold)
to /etc/rc.local, you'll have basically zero performance loss. Usually it scales up the CPU at 95%, with this it will do it at 11% (you can't go lower atm).
You can load the  "cpufreq_stats" module and see what it's doing with cpufreq-info. You should notice your laptop fan spin down quite a bit once you set it up.
If you have a watt meter, you can take out the battery and see the power use drop from something like 17w to 12w.

  • IMac G5 - Deep sleep - Will not wake up + Fans rev-up.

iMac G5 ( not under any recall programs and no bloated capacitors )
will not come out of deep sleep and the fans start to rev up after 1 min and
    stay revved up on hi.
    Tried all possible solutions:
Via keyboard : Reset pram + Open firmware
Reset SMU via power cord and the internal smu button.
    Sleep light firmware is installed
Reinstalled 10.4.0 and went to 10.4.7
Tried to scare him with a glass of water, still nothing.
With iStat all temps a cool.
External fan on the PSU to keep it cooler.
Forced the iMac to have the fans on hi by booting in single user mode.
Rebooted. Fans still on hi. logged on then let it go to sleep on its own.
Monitor set at 1 min and HD at 5.
Monitor went to sleep but not the HD.
Forced deep sleep and it worked.
    But Same symptoms on wakeup.
    Removed the cover:
From a cold power up to video display all 3 led's light up.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301283
    Deep sleep:
Leds 1 and 2 stay on, led 3 shuts off, normal .
    Wake from sleep:
Led 1 and 2 are still on.
Led 3 lights up for a fraction of a second and does not come back on.
Checks the disk drive then spins down ( when a disk is present )
Checks the HD then spins down.
1 min later the fans start revving on hi.
    Force reboot is required.
Symptoms started after 10.4.8 update. ( Yes I know about unsanity docks )
Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. I wait until that fat lady sings.
Please keep this post to the specific symptoms and to PPC G5 imacs.
Has any one ( iMacs G5) with these symptoms been cured?.
How can you uninstall the sleep light firmware patch to reinstall it?
I know that it stops the fans from revving.
    Any known Open firmware manual?
PM B&W G4 1Ghz Sonnet :: And still strong   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   If it aint broke, tweak it. If it breaks then fix it and tweak it again.

If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still didn't work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.
    Cheers!
    DALE

  • Verizon does not care about customers!!!

On Sunday, December 9th, I visited my local Verizon store in
    Inverness, Florida.
I was excited about getting a new phone and had already
decided on the new Galaxy S III. The store was pretty busy, so we I to wait,
after waiting for about twenty minutes a very friendly sales representative by
the name of Jay was ready to assisted me. I explained to him that earlier this
year I had purchased and returned a phone but that my account had not been
reset to show that I was eligible for upgrade. He then called into Verizon and
spoke to someone named Brandy (<Phone Number deleted>) who stated that she
could not do anything about this situation due to my lack of having a package
tracking number from the phone I had “so-called returned” because it was not
shown as being in the warehouse inventory. After numerous attempts by the sales
representative, as well as myself, to further explain to her that I had
documentation printed from Verizon showing my account being credited monies
back after the phone had been received back into inventory. In an attempt
extinguish the animosity between myself and this Verizon representative, Jay
asked her if there was anyone else, possibly her superior, which we may speak
to. She then put us on hold while she contacted said superior, which reiterated
exactly what she had previously said. My store sale representative had kindly
put his phone on speaker so that I might also be privy to the information given
by these two female representatives. Along with my frustration of the
situation, I had to also sit by as the two of them exchange casual niceties, as
if the store sales representative or myself were not even present. By this
point, I was extremely offended by the utter disregard for myself, being a
loyal customer and for the embarrassed store representative. The superior
explained that even though I had documentation showing the previously purchased
phone had been returned, Verizon did not have any documentation from their
warehouse as ever being received or restocked. She stated that she would have
to file a form to investigate if the phone was indeed received. I was concerned
because this issue was from the beginning of the year and it was now December,
what if they could not find anything? I asked her that very question and she
responded with the answers I dreaded the most: You will have to wait and see
“if” we can find the phone, you are still under a contract because of your
upgrade, and you will be eligible for upgrade again October 2013.
I can not even begin to emphasize my disappointment in
Verizon. I was completely shocked by how not only I was treated but how these
female representatives had also disregarded a fellow Verizon employee too. At
several points he actually had to ask if he could speak without being talked
over by one of them. I would not refer any of my friends, family, or even total
    stranger to your company.
The phone call ended with Brandy stating she would get back
in touch with me with an update (which never happened). It is now December 20th
and I am yet to hear from any Verizon representative. Earlier this evening, I
called and spoke with Jennifer (Badge ID#<Deleted>) who was extremely helpful. I
explained the prior situation and provided her with the exact information that
I had provided previously to the store sales representative which then verbally
relayed the information over the phone to the two female representatives. In
matter of minutes, she was able to find a tracking# (<Tracking Number deleted>)
that was received by the warehouse on March 2nd. She could also see
that there was not a name documented for the Verizon employee that sold me the
phone, which came up during my prior conversation because I had to keep
defending myself that I had purchased the phone not in a store, not online, but
over the phone when someone from Verizon contacted me. Jennifer placed me on
hold while she contacted someone else to help her. It wasn’t long and she came
back to the line reporting that she had been able to reset my eligibility. She
apologized for it taking her so long, but I explained to her that when I had
went into the store, I had to wait almost two hours without getting any
acceptable results. I am glad to know that your store representative (Jay) and
your customer service representative (Jennifer), still care about providing
good customer service. If it was not for them, I would honestly believe that
Verizon did not have one ethical employee who believes in doing the right
thing!  Even though I finally got it reset, I have never received any response from customer service regarding their employees nasty attitude and lack of professionalism! After the way I was accused of not returning a phone that they had records of receiving, I think they should give me my upgrade for free!

Photos should be copied to the computer and synced back via iTunes.  They are unrelated to the Apple ID unless you are using PhotoStream.
Depending on how the contacts are synced the the device, chaging the Apple ID may wipe them.
Why do you want to change the Apple ID?  If it's an email address change, simply change the email associated with the Apple ID.  Do NOT create a new Apple ID.
