Showing af:popup from bean - the new way?

Question

I've been using this approach in my bean, to show a popup:
My bean:

However; I've read that in ADF 11g it should be possible to just access the binded element. Like this +myPopup.show+
If I use the later approach, my popup collapses to a little square in the upper left corner. If I use the javascript approach everything works fine.

        hints.add(RichPopup.PopupHints.HintTypes.HINT_ALIGN_ID, source)
            .add(RichPopup.PopupHints.HintTypes.HINT_LAUNCH_ID, source)
            .add(RichPopup.PopupHints.HintTypes.HINT_ALIGN,
                 RichPopup.PopupHints.AlignTypes.ALIGN_END_AFTER);
        popup1.show(hints);
AdfFacesContext.getCurrentInstance().addPartialTarget(popup1);Regards,
