Size of the Block

Hi, I am beginner to Essbase. I have a doubt regarding the size of the block and the number blocks.
Can any of you tell me How do we calculate the following....
The size of the Block,
Number of the Blocks in the Cube,
Number of the potential Blocks in the Cube.
Please answer these. This will be a great help to me.
Thank you in advance.

There have been a number of posts that have described what you are asking for. In addtionion, the Database Administrators guide goes into great detail on how to calculate block size, the number of blocks in a cube and the potential. I suggest reading that section to get an understanding. Once you do, if you still have questions, please repost with something more specific

  • Is there a limit on the size of the input for the Solve Linear Equations block?

    Hello,
    I'm trying to figure out why the Solve Linear Equations block will properly function with some sets of data and why it won't with others. What my program is doing is taking a signal and comparing it with a batch of sine and cosine waves to try and pick out patterns in the data. I have different sample sizes and it seems to work when I throw 3900 points at it. However, I have another set with 4550 points and it gives me incorrect amplitudes for my sinusoids.  Is there some limit to the size of the matrices that I can give this block? Or is there some other workaround that still allows me to keep all of my data?
    Thanks,
    David Joseph

    Well, the best way to show what I expect is to see the entire program. It's pretty evident that when looking at the graphs, something isn't right. What is supposed to happen is that the runout amplitudes are found, and then those sinusoids are subtracted from the initial data, leaving tooth to tooth data and noise. When I use the larger arrays, it seems as though not all of the data gets through (count the peaks on the product gear runout graph vs. initial) and the amplitudes are much to small, such that nothing is really taken out and the tooth to tooth data looks like the initial data.
    Also, we will also be using an FFT, but it will be limited to only determining the frequencies we should check. I've fought with the fft blocks quite a bit and I just prefer to not use them. Plus, the guy I'm writing this for wants exact answers and does not want to pad or resample the data or use windows.
    The exact number of data points isn't important (ie. 4550 vs 4551) since I use the array size block to index the for loop.
    As for typical values, they can change a lot based on materials. But, the original 3900 data point sets and the 4550 data point sets used practically identical gears. So, use the original 3900 sets I've included as references (check the RO array block numbers to compare).
    I've included 3 3900 samples, 3 4550 samples, and 3 4550 samples that have been truncated to 3900 or so as constants on the block diagram.
    Also, the check for additional runouts (like 3 per rev, 4 per rev, etc..) is optional, but if you choose to use it, use positive integers only.
    I don't know how much of this program will make sense and I have wires running everywhere.. so good luck. Keep in mind I'm only a student and I hadn't touched Labview until about 2 or 3 months ago.
    Thanks,
    David Joseph

  • Will block size effect the calc script performance?

    Hi Experts,
    I have a cube called RCI_LA:RCI_LA, now I have created calc scripts and working fine. But those calc scripts are taking too much time than expected (normally it should not take more than 15 min but those are taking nearly 1 hr or more some calc scripts.)
    In database properties I found that block size is 155896 B i.e. 152.KB but this size should be 8 to 100 KB & Block density is 0.72%
    If block size exceeds more than 100 KB will it impact the performance of Calc scripts?
    I think answer to the above question is “yes”. In this case what should I need to do to improve calc scripts performance?
    Could you please share your experience here with me to come out of this problem?
    Thanks in advance.
    Ram

    I believe Sandeep was trying to say "Dynamic" rather than "Intelligent".
    The ideal block size is a factor in all calcs, but the contributing reasons are many (The main three are CPU caching, Data I/O overhead, Index I/O overhead).
    Generally speaking, the ideal block size is achieved when you can minimize the combination of Data I/O overhead and Index I/O overhead. For this reason a block size that is too large will incur too much Data I/O, while a block size that is too small will incur too much Index I/O. If your Index file is small, increasing your block size may help, although the commonly acceptible block size is between 8K and 64K in size, this is just a guideline.
    In other words, if you test it with something right in the middle and your index file is tiny, you might want to test it with a smaller block size. If your index file is very large (i.e. 400 MB or more), you may want to increase the block size and retest.
    Ways to increase/decrease it are also many. Obviously, changing the dense/sparse settings is the main way, but there are some considerations that make this a touchy process. Other ways are to use dynamic calc in the dense dimensions. I say start at the top of your smallest dense dimension and keep the number of DIMENSIONS that you use D-C on limited. Using D-C members in a dense dimension does NOT increase the index file, so it could be considered a "free" reduction in block size -- the penulty is paid on the retrieve side (there is no free ride).

  • Is ther any way to prevent implicit data typing in the block scriptd

    System build /autocode  implicitly define the type of variables that are not defined by the user in a block scripts based on  the value assigned to them.
    As an example, if there is no type definition for the variable A in a block script,  depending which of the following lines appears first in the block script the type of variable will be defined differently in the autocoded model:
    A = 1; -> RT_INTEGER A;
    A = 1.0;-> RT_FLOAT A;
    This behavior can cause undesirable result in certain situations.
    Is there any way to flag the variables in the block scripts with no type definition during analyze  / autocode? or alternatively, disable the implicit type definition such that any variable without explicit type definition in the block scripts will result to an error during analyze  / autocode.
    Thanks

    Hi Farshid,
    It is the default behavior to pick up the type from the first assignment. However one can explicitly type variables as seen in the BlockScript user guide page 2-7. For instance, one can declare
    Inputs: U;
    Outputs: Y;
    Parameters: (UBrk, YBrk);
    Float U, Y(;
    Float UBrk(, YBrk(Y.size,;
    This forces all the parameters and local variables to Float.
    Let me know if this helps, there is not a way to turn off implicit typing, just a way to explicitly type.

  • How to change the size of the caret in a JTextPane

    I have text of different font sizes and the default caret height is the height of the text with the maximum font size. How do I change the caret height so that it matches the height of the text with the specified font size ?

    This has been a real pain in the butt to figure out, but I think I finally got it. If you create your own caret (subclass of DefaultCaret) then you override its paint() and damage() methods. I was having all kinds of problems with this though. I was getting pieces of carets left behind when I moved with the arrow keys, etc... from the helps I found. The arrow keys were my big problem.
    I think I finally figured out that the damage() simply does need to specify an area a little bigger than the old caret so it can blank it out. Then I think others had a logic problem, and Sun does not make this problem clear. What happens it that I think repaint() calls paint() who then uses the bigger x, y, height and width parameters that got set in damage(), which was causing my problems because the damage size was bigger than the size I wanted to create my caret with. What I do is figure out my area from the font I am using (another trick) and make them (the charWd and charHt) variables class variables. I calculate them in damage, use a bigger area to blank out my old caret in damage, and then used the correct caret size I calculated in damage() in paint(), instead of the rectangle values that seem to get passed from damage() to paint(). That was the problem in other examples.

  • How to get the size of the backed up datafile in a backup set with rman?

    Oracle 10gR2 and catalog is in place.
    Since RMAN only backups the used blocks(does not take backup from NEVER USED blocks), what can be the explanation of some extra space during backups?
    And also how to trace this space allocation by datafile with v$% - rc_% views or any rman command?
    Thank you, best regards.
    Tonguç

    Before 10G R2 rman does not backup never used blocks but it backs up blocks which have been previously used. So, dropping or truncating a table does not make the backup size smaller since the blocks of that segment are not "never used" anymore.
    Starting with 10G R2 a new feature named "unused block compression" comes into play. With this feature rman does not backup unused blocks (even if they have been used before). But it has some restrictions like: you need to backup to disk unless you are using Oracle Secure Backup, the datafile needs to be locally managed, etc...

  • Oracle10gR2 indexing changes the block ?

    DB: Oracle 10g R2 x864
    OS: SUSE Linux x864
    DR Product/Tool: Novell Platespin(http://www.novell.com/products/forge/)
    We are using a block based replication tool(Platespin) to maintain a DR of our customer's Database Server(oracle 10g R2 atop SUSE Linux) using Platespin.
    Block based Incremental replication is configured to run on hourly basis over a 30 Mbps dedicated fiber link.
    Maximum changes of data per day(during business hours) wont exceed 300 MB on Production Database Server. During business hours Platespin replicates at least 1 GB at every replication cycle(8 to 10 GB during business hours), while during off hours it replicates 300 to 500 MB per hour(at every replication cycle). We are facing this strange issue with this box only(SUSE 10 + Oracle 10g R2), we have protected MS Exchange 2007 Server based workloads without this strange issue, i.e in case of Exchange only incremental data (delta) replicates from Production server to DR site on Platespin.
    We opened a support ticket with Novell Platespin about why Volume of Incremental replication is too high, Novell/Platespin support says us that Oracle re-indexes its database for better performance, so it is possible that re-indexing causes the blocks level changes on the storage, and since Platespin works on Block level, thats why it replicates so much(even though data is not changed that much)
    here is actual words of Novell Platespin support:
    I think whenever Oracle database Indexing happens, it changes almost most of the Blocks of database and Platespin replicate all those Blocks.
    As you know, Platespin checks the Date/Time attribute of every blocks before replication and if Date/Time attribute changes from last
    replication, it considers as changed block and replicate those blocks on Platespin Appliance. So, my suggestion is just look into the Oracle
    server behaviour before/after Data indexing process and do needful or do some workaround to overcome this issue.
    is there anything we can do at oracle level ? is it really a database(indexing) issue ? any one can please comments/suggest on this ?

    1 - we are doing Block based replication of entire /oracle file system, /oracle is a single file system contains every thing(binaries, database, archiving and logging is under /oracle )

    3 - actually this machine is not just a Oracle 10g R2 DB server but SAP ERP is also installed and we use to check the change of data via SAP
    4 - Maximum data changes per day never exceeds 300 MB
    5 - Normally change of data(delta) per day is about 100 to 175 MB.
    6 - Indexing is configured on SAP level(we have no idea how SAP manages indexing with Oracle)
    8 - no special updates or jobs are configured
    So am I right to understand that if data change is 300 MB then Archiving creates another 300 MB ? means in any case the amount of change
    per day would be like 300*2=600MB, so the block based replication tool shouldn't replicate more then 600 MB per day, while in our case the block based replication tool
    replicates 1 GB hourly during Business Hours, and 200-300 MB hourly during off hours.No. You need to read the concepts manual (available at http://tahiti.oracle.com among other places), and probably should read Tom Kyte's books too. As the others mentioned, you should look and see how much redo is being written. The best way for your system depends on configuration, sometimes it can be as simple as looking at the sizes and times of the files in the archive log (which are actually archived redo logs) directory.
    How much redo is written depends on what is going on. How much undo is written also depends on what is going on. The log writer and database writer processes are doing the actual writing, so the data being replicated can vary from what SAP thinks is being generated. For example, if you are changing a value in a column, the redo only needs to have a change vector for the block that contains that column. But if you are copying blocks, either the copying tool has to be aware of Oracle blocks (I don't know how likely that is for your tool), or you risk having fractured blocks. User managed backup has that problem, so Oracle lets you put tablespaces in hot backup mode, which has a consequence of writing the [url http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/asktom/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:271815712711]entire block to redo the first time it is changed in that mode. That's why I was wondering how your block based tool deals with that. Oracle data files also have a header with system change number information in it, and blocks have similar things, and they all have to be coordinated, so that's why I question whether you are indeed doing block based transfers - Gigabytes implies either files or way lots block changes.

    and also if Indexing is enabled, it wont change the Blocks on Storage so drastically ?Well, not knowing what is going on, we can't say. Does your storage tell you how much writing is going on? Does Oracle see lots of waits on the lgwr and/or dbwr processes? (There are command line ways to see waits, and if you are licensed for performance monitoring there are pretty graphs in dbconsole/enterprise manager).

  • What happened to the "Block Popup Windows" menu item in Safari 6?

    What happened to the "Block Popup Windows" menu item in Safari 6?  Seems to be gone.

    Shheesh!  Loki is saying that this was a very useful tool/option.  Is there any way to BRING IT BACK TO THE SAFARI MENU?  Not how to do it in Preferences.
    What I am saying is: What incompetent is responsible for this build of Safari?  There was no reason to take that out... plenty of room in the Safari menu.  But if you REALLY want to know why I'm ******, Older people can no longer go into "Appearances" and change the Fonts and Size without knowing how to use terminal or how to make .css files.  (which doesn't work well anyway)
    This build is infuriating.

  • SAP Table index size is greater than the size of the actual table

    Hello Experts,
    We are resolving an issue related to database performance. The present database size is 9 Terabytes. The analysis of response times through ST03N shows that the db time is 50% of the total response time. We are planning to reorganize the most updated tables (found from DB02old tx).
    Here we see that the size of the index for a table is greater than the actual size of the table. Is this possible, if yes then how can we reorganize the index as it does not allow us to reorganize the index using brspace command.
    Hope to hear from you soon, and if any additional activities you can suggest to improve the performance of the database will be appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hi Zaheer,
    online redef may help you (for a little while) , but also check WHY the index became fragmented.
    Improper settings can bring the index fragmented again and you have reoccuring reorg needs.
    i.e.
    check if PCT_INCREASE >0 if you are using Dictionary Managed Tablespaces or locally managed tablespaces  that uses a "User" allocation policy. Set it to 0 to generate uniform next extents in the online reorg.
    select
                SEGMENT_NAME,
                SEGMENT_TYPE,
                round((NEXT_EXTENT*BLOCKS)/(EXTENTS*BYTES))*(BYTES/BLOCKS),
                PCT_INCREASE
            from
                DBA_SEGMENTS
            where
                OWNER='SAPR3'
            and
                SEGMENT_TYPE in ('INDEX',
                                'TABLE')
            and
                PCT_INCREASE > 0
            and segment_name in ('Yourtable','Yourindex')
    In the following cases, it may be worthwhile to rebuild the index:
         --> the percentage of the space used is bad - lower than 66%: PCT_USED
         --> deleted leaf blocks represent more than 20% of total leaf blocks: DEL_LF_ROWS
         --> the height of the tree is bigger than 3: HEIGHT or BLEVEL

  • 11gR2 OLAP - How to define or set the  size of the OLAP PAGE?

    Hi,all!
    Could you help me? How to define or set the size of the OLAP PAGE in 11gR2?

    Hi there,
    The size of an OLAP AW page is automatically derived from the block size of the tablespace in which it is stored (which in turn is typically derived from the db_block_size initialisation parameter)
    Do you have a particular concern about this setting?
    Thanks,

  • Stacked Canvas and No. of records display on the block?

    Any coding to re-size the "Stacked" canvas and no.of records displays on the block?
    Please advice,
    Amy

    u can set the view port and Width and height of the Stack canvas at runtime but not No of Records display....
    set_view_property .....VIEW_SIZE or Width / Height
    for canvas size use SET_CANVAS_PROPERTY

  • Why do copied files show different file sizes than the original files?

    When I copy files (to another drive, folder, etc.) some show the same file size as the original, but others don't.
    I'm guessing this is not abnormal, but what causes it?
    Thanks.

    Hi dymar,
    Copying to another Drive is understandable, they may have a differentnumber of Blocks allocated per file, for insnce a one Byte file might take up 512 bytes, 1024 Bytes, etc, but a Get info should show the actual size of the file within that/those blocks.
    If copying to another Format, like MS-DOS, Forks may be lost also.
    There are ways to actually Compare the files...
