Skype Intrusion Attempt (again)?

Hello. Until recently, I've pretty much had no problems with Skype at all as I'm using version 6.6.0.106; however, just a few hours ago I have noticed multiple intrusion attempts on my comptuer originating from Skype.exe. Below are some pictures that my Norton Antivirus has detected:
I have read an earlier article about the same incident located here:
http://community.skype.com/t5/Security-Privacy-Trust-and/Skype-y-u-be-attacking-my-computer/m-p/1759...
It appears to be that the problem is 'resolved' but I am still getting these intrustion attempts every few hours or so which is quite frustrating and annoying. Has this issue truly been resolved since the previous post? Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

It seems that a flash ad and / or code that Microsoft has ported from Windows Live Messenger will randomly and spontaneously open your default webbrowser to a survey. There are multiple traces of this dating back to ~2005 and no clear solutions on any forum posts, so it seems as though it may be some legacy code from Windows Live Messenger.
Basically it's due to the ads that Microsoft has linked to Skype at present, they're laden with both ad and malware, and Microsoft seems to not want to do much about it.

  • Skype - Intrusion Attempts GNU BASH

As reported by Norton, something in Skype keeps attempting an so-called "GNU Bash".
These intrusion attempts have just started today and originate from SKYPE.EXE. I am not actively Skyping with anyone, have not downloaded anything through Skype today, and have Skype minimized. I do have the ads partly blocked (cannot see them), but they are still possibly there and are likely the cause. There are likely some bad ads going around..

This is more than likely not Skype specific though in this case it sounds related to an infected advertisement.  The GNU Bash vulnerability has pretty much gone rampant online.  It doesn't have to be an advertisement and can be any user or Skype user attacking a range of IPs that their computer interacts with.  The only computers affected by that vulnerability are Linux/Mac users and similar devices that use Bash that haven't been patched.  Bash by default is not installed on OSX unless someone enables advanced Unix services.  That vulnerability would have no effect on a Windows user.  So if any of your contacts have Bash installed on a device/OS you might urge them to get it patched or to uninstal it, if not needed.

  • ANy idea what this "intrusion attempt" means

My router firewall sends me this message from time to time
    Dear User
Your router has detected and protected you against an attempt to gain access to your network. >This may have been an attempted hacker intrusion, or perhaps just your Internet Service Provider doing routine network maintenance.
Most of these network probes are nothing to be worried about - these types of random probes should NOT be reported, but you may want to report repeated intrusions attempts. Save this email for comparison with future alert messages.

    Destination:72.14.243.51, 80 (from WAN Outbound)
It looks to me like a warning that I and sending a "SYN Flood" - I don't know what that is or why - could it be a Trojan horse or something on my Mac?

The only thing that is a little funny about this message - if I interpret it correctly, which is certainly subject questioning - are the addresses.
The destination of 72.14.243.51 (the target??) is Google.
The source of 192.168.2.103 is an IP address from a private address range which should mean something on the network inside your router/modem that is issuing IP addresses.
But, unless it happens again, ignoring it is probably OK.

  • WHEN will Firefox 5.0 be compatible w/ Skype plugin/extention again?

Skype compatibility was lost after updating to Firefox 5.0. When may I expect to have use of this all important tool?
Firefox 4 is not supported and 3.6.18 is too old to drive the Catsone ATS properly!

There is new information from Google since a month ago, they took there sweet time to say they would no longer support their toolbar. Supporting their extension only on older versions of Firefox is not really support, and that will obvious run out. Google dropped support because they said the functionality was already in Firefox (they are including extensions in that assessment).
Google Chrome does not have the Google Toolbar and never did. Google kind of leads the pack on not much in the way of toolbars for the browser itself. Really glad that Firefox is customizable and that we can still have basic functional toolbars. I personally never install any third party toolbars.
'''The Google Toolbar is no longer supported by Google in Firefox 5 and up''', you may be able to get what you want from it for a limited time, the directions to install the Google Toolbar were posted before Google actually announced dropping support.

  • Skype Permissions - Way too intrusive!!! Record au...

    Hi!
When I updated my Skype App, I took a bit of time to read the permissions you guys ask for and they are more intrusive than I could ever imagine!!!
What do you mean by "Allows the App to modify the data about your contacts stored on your phone, INCLUDING THE FREQUENCY WITH WHICH YOU'VE CALLED, EMAILED OR COMMUNICATED IN OTHER WAYS WITH SPECIFIC CONTACTS". Why do you possibly need to modify this type of metadata?? Isn't it enough that you have permission to look at it and store it?
And how about the "Record audio" permission? I am very concerned because I just gave you permission "to record audio with the microphone" and "this permission allows the app TO RECORD AUDIO AT ANY TIME WITHOUT YOUR CONFIRMATION" (that is, my confirmation). I have a few questions:
    1. Why do you need to record my audio?
    2. What do you mean by "at anytime"? Does it mean the microphone of my phone can all of a sudden be activated if Skype is running in the background? Because the words can be so easily interpreted that way.
    3. Why can't you ask for my confirmation to actually record my audio, if you really want to hear what I am talking about?
Do I really have to give away the comfort of knowing I am not recored at any time just to be able to talk via wi-fi to friends who are far away?
It is just so, so, so upsetting.

Hi and welcome to the community,
It's great to see that you are conscious about your privacy and therefor you check the permissions requested by your Android apps. That's definitely the right approach. And we would like to supply you with the necessary information to verify the permissions requested by the Skype app are indeed necessary.
It's important to note that the descriptions of these permissions are coming from the Android operating system and are not within Skype controls. So for example the app permission to access the microphone (Skype obviously needs to access your microphone for calling and also needs to access it while the Skype app is not in the foreground) includes this general "anytime" reference. The Skype app will only use the microphone during calls, but we can't request a more granular permission for that case as the Android OS is not offering that kind of granularity.
Similar goes with access to your contacts: As we want to allow you to have your Skype contacts shown within your phone's contacts we are requesting this permission. We haven't included (and are not intending to) any feature to change the metadata of any non Skype contacts, but again the permissions description includes that.
Please also read how Skype is dedicated to protect your privacy and personal information all the time: http://www.skype.com/en/legal/privacy/
And finally here's some further reading explaining some of the Android permissions:
    http://www.goandroid.co.in/android-applications-permissions-explained/22691/
I'll talk to the product team to see if we can come up with a more detailed explanation. Thanks again for bringing this up.

  • Why is Skype freezing everytime I try to open it after upgrading to Mountain Lion? Will it help if I delete and download it again? Are others having the same/similar problem?

Skype was working fine with the OS X Lion but ever since I upgraded, it has constantly been freezing. I've decided to drag it to trash and download the .dmg file from the Skype website once again. Are others facing the same problem?
Also, what are the associated files I should delete from the Library (Preferences, Caches etc) to remove Skype completely?

Well, this problem is fixed. I deleted all the files associated with Skype from the Library. Reinstalled it and the main thing, unlinked Skype from Facebook. Now it works fine!

  • Sign in again whilst using skype

I was using skype and in full conversation when a white screen came up asking me if I wanted to sign in using my Microsoft account. As I was in mid call and already signed in with my Microsoft account I pressed sign in and lost the call. It was there in the background but wouldn't let me view. Tried closing down skype and opening again but still the same. Took a while before I could get going again. Slightly worried it might be a virus or hack.

  • Skype - Getting Started, Test Call

I've successfully downloaded v. 1.5 of Skype (I'm using a 733 MHz G4, OS 10.3.9 and understand that the latest version - 2.5 - of Skype requires more CPU power).
I can start Skype up but when I attempt to make the so-called test call (echo123), I drop into an endless "Connecting.." mode without the connection ever being made. The icon to the left of "Test call" is grayed out with a question mark in it as is the one contact I established.
I've repaired permissions several times; even deleted Skype, and downloaded again. Someone on the Skyp forums suggested that this could be a Firewall problem. I haven't attempted to change any of the Firewall settings; I haven't had problems with Internet connections.
Ideas anyone? I have not yet installed a camera/microphone but assumed that this is not connected to the problem I'm having.
Thanks in advance for any input.

  • Migrating to new Skype id + importing 1200+ contac...

    Hello,
I am new here to the forums however a long time Skype user. I recently ran into an issue which at first I thought would have been a minor infraction (mainly from my misinterpretation of bulk contact requests) but now has snowballed into a big problem.
I recently decided to migrate from one Skype account and move over to another. Following the normal Skype contact backup and import process, I proceeded to move my contacts over to my new Skype. Once I was sure everything was ready to announce my transition, I then updated the profile on my old account whereas I had changed both my Skype display name and Skype mood with updated info to suggest my contacts to start adding my new account.
While still logged into my old Skype account, I then opened a second Skype instance to log into the new account. From there I was able to welcome contacts as they added my new Skype account (since the process is "instant" from the receiving end after importing - I didn't want to be rude and ignore anyone lol). There were about a dozen contacts that I had clicked the "Resend contact request" link per chat window as needed (to get my "regulars" added back quickly).
By now a few hours had passed and my numbers were slowly growing. I knew I had a ways to go considering having 1200+ contacts, I assumed it would take a while. I also sent out a tweet about it to let my followers know of the change. It was a little more than 3+ hours in on my new account that I had experienced the infamous automatic sign out. After confirming by attempting to login on Skype.com, performing the password reset, and starting the account recovery process, I knew at that time my account had been restricted. I then submitted the support form for ownership verification and later discussions started with a support agent. I had explained my situation (but in greater detail than what I've shared here in the forums) and even re-read the Terms of Use just to make sure that I hadn't overlooked anything and concluded that other than an influx of contact additions (as my interpretation of the process for importing contacts was that incoming requests weren't considered bulk as I wouldn't be sending requests but rather receiving them) that I hadn't violated the Tou policy. I was later given a generic response with that familiar "canned" message response.
The message lightly describes how Skype protects my privacy and security by restricting accounts as soon as they receive information of suspicious activity. In the message, it declared that suspicious activities had happened in accordance with my current usage of which is dependent in Skype's Terms of Use via "http://www.skype.com/en/legal/tou/" and that my account will be kept restricted.
I felt this lightly made decision to be unfair considering the events leading up to it's restriction. I was very truthful and sincere when I made my case but felt it had fallen on deaf ears. From here I then decided to not give up and tried the live support chat session as an alternative measure. I presented my view of events, describing everything I could remember and to my surprise, I was greeted with a lovely support agent that handled my appeal. About mid-way through the chat session, just after letting the agent know I had added the few regulars using the "resend contacts link" per chat window, the agent told me that I should only add 1 or 2 contacts a day. I was bothered by having to be limited by 1 or 2 a day but simply replied back that I would do just that. Nearing the end of the chat session, I was then instructed that the agent would handle my issue and email an update shortly thereafter. She was really pleasant to deal with.
The following email was the response I received...
    Hello <NAME REMOVED>,
Thank you for contacting Skype Customer Service.
I understand that you were not able to use your account. I apologize to hear about the experience. Let me help you out the best way possible.
To inform, Skype has strict security measures that are programmed and systematized that sensitively detects any unusual, out-of-ordinary and suspicious activities on all accounts. Once there are activities detected which are not aligned with our Terms of Use, it automatically restricts the account for safety and security measures on our system and for the users itself.
After we verify the ownership, this is the time that will intensively review the account. We check the reason for its blocking, or what were the cause. We take considerations with orders, payments methods, calls, SMS, log-ins made, IP used, reports by other users, Node, device used, email address, webID's, Skype Manager, etc. Everything is actually recorded in our system.
After careful review and investigation, we follow certain protocol, process and procedure if account can be subjected to lift its restriction. However, in your case, it is regretful to advise that we will keep the accounts restriction as per security measures we have here on Skype.
We at Skype value the security of all accounts very highly and as such we are only able to reinstate the status if our process permits. Given the mentioned situation, we highly recommend for you to create a new account for you to enjoy Skype's services again.
You can also take time reading our Terms of Use to check what things can affect account suspension and to serve as a guide so that you won't get the same issue in the future again.
    Hoping for your kind understanding.
    Best regards,

    Skype Customer Service
I feel that I've reached a dead end with Skype support. I explained how I cannot create a new account as the name was directly tied into my online presence and simply changing to a different name on a new account was simply out of the question. Not to mention that if I had done so, we would most likely end up right back in the same predicament that landed me with having my account restricted. I had even asked about alternative methods for importing mass contacts to not trigger an automated system check that might deem it suspicious but was not given any recommendations (aside of just creating a new account). What I found curious about all of this happened to be how it was just the one account that had been restricted whilst my old account remained active and still signed into Skype.
I am unsure with how to proceed which is what brought me here in these forums. I've spent the past several hours reading related threads and posts while searching for an alternative method but I've since felt that I've exhausted further action to take.
My platform is Windows 7 64Bit w/SP1 and use both the latest 7.x build of Skype and on rare occasions, 6.21.0.104. I have no trouble logging info my old Skype account. If you need additional information, I will try my best to provide. Please accept my thanks in advance for any advice given, it will be appreciated.

    Hi there,
I signed up for a skype account few days ago. I added $30 credit to the account. Yesterday when I wanted to use the service my account was blocked. Myself I feel I reached a dead end. What will now happend with my credit ? It feels bad that I might loose the money I already added to the account. Also I believe I don't qualify for live support chat. I don't find a link to live support chat. I can not speak live with a person. I feel that they are not trying to solve my issue. I replied to this thread because I received an exact email from skype customer support.

    Hi, Levi999,
I arranged to merge your second post with your first post as these two circumstances look to me like they are related:  if you are attempting to recover your account (your first post), then auto-recharges and subscription renewals (your second post) will not occur until you have restored access to your account.
Please contact Skype Customer Service again, and refer to your ticket number when you do.  The 24-hour customer service access you refer to is the instant message chat access ( https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA10656/what-is-live-chat-support? )
By way of reminder, your Skype Number will be held on your account for 90 days following the subscription's expiration date, so you have time to sign on to your account dashboard and reactivate the subscription once you have restored access to the account.

  • App version of Skype won't sign in

For some reason the Skype app on my install of Windows 8.1 Enterprise will not sign me in. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it a couple of times.
I've tried the steps outlined here: http://community.skype.com/t5/Modern-Windows-for-users-on/Oops-there-was-a-problem-Please-restart-Skype-or-try-again/m-p/1271790/highlight/true#M3388 I tried sfc /scannow still no luck.
Still can't get it to sign in for some reason. My login works just fine for the desktop app, but I like being able to snap the Skype app to the side of a monitor for chatting, but for the life of me I can't figure out why it won't sign in.
It just sits there attempting to sign in for roughly 3 minutes and then fails with Oops...There was a problem, please restart Skype or Try Again. Any further ideas on this?

Then why the heck do you still have it on the store like it works? And why just a generic "Something went wrong" error message than having it say "we can't sign you in because this version of Skype has been deprecated"? I wasted four and a half hours this morning troubleshooting this because nobdoy at Microsoft stopped and thought to have the common courtesty to maybe have an actually informative error message about the failed sign in and remove the non-working application from the Microsoft Store.
Jeez, and here I was thinking Microsoft was a professional company that cared about end user experience. Nope, they just leave you with a cryptic error message making you think it's something wrong on your side rather than the truth...
Also, thank you so much for removing wonderful features that worked without any problems whatsoever before. I don't know what I would have done had I been able to keep using Skype conveniently...
And that isn't even to mention how it breaks the People app too. It has your Skype contacts in there, but now since Skype doesn't work when you go in there and tell it to IM or call someone it just goes "durr, I don't know what to do."
If you're going to change a workflow like that, at least tell the other places that rely on the Moden Skype app to gracefully redirect to the new worflow.

  • Is there a problem with skype at the moment?

    Hello folks.
I'm running a G4 and 10.411 using an old version of skype with a software patch that I found in one of the skype topics on this site. It has been working fine for months now. I don't use video just audio. I have a subscription to call land lines. The problem I am having is that I can call out and hear the person I am calling, but they can't hear me. Is there a problem with skype today? Or have they made changes as of today that do not permit people to use the patch and an old version of skype? Any information would be much appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The problem has seemed to have gone away. The problem started yesterday on two different computers. Today, on one of the computers I ran a utility called Mcjanitor that I had installed years ago but very rarely ran it. I neglected to try skype prior to running the utility. On computer #2 I tried booting from an old utility disk called techtoolpro. I was unable to boot from the disk after several attempts and restarts. Both computers are running better and skype now works again on both. I sent an email earlier today to a tech support guy from my ISP about my recent problems with skype. In conclusion I can't explain why skype now works on both computers. I can only guess that I reset something when I used (attempted to use) a utility disk. The other possibility is that my ISP guy did something on his end. Or, lastly, that skype had problems that were remedied by skype today.

  • Northern Colorado, USA - Skype number has been dis...

As with the others here, our incoming Skype number rejects all calls with "You have reached a number that has been disconnected." or something equivalent, depending on the calling carrier. There's no way to do any workaround like forwarding or voicemail, as the call is rejected at the very incoming level. We've had this number for over 4 years, and now it's useless. There is plenty of credit sitting there in Skype Manager, so there's no reason from our end for it to be disabled.
I already have an escalation with Skype support that has been in for 1.5 days so far with no effect on the problem.

    Hello Elaine,
Thank you for your assistance. Since we became aware of the outage at approximately 9AM, Dec. 24 US Mountain Time, I have been making use of Skype support's "live chat" to try to get information or any sort of feedback about what to expect. The first live chat session was at 9:17 MST on Tuesday, but given that Skype has generally been able to resolve outages like this fairly quickly in the past, there was no escalation at that point and I was not very worried. When the problem was still happening Tuesday evening, I used support chat again close to 8PM MST. The technical escalation was put in close to 9PM Tuesday night. At 5AM MST, an Email came in regarding the "SRX" escalation, but the email was completely in Chinese, and any attempts to use Babelfish or Google translation were unsuccessful in retrieving anything intelligible from that email.
Last night, after another full day of outage, I once again went on Skype live chat support and interacted with a support person who was very empathetic, but really had nothing to offer other than "All we can do is wait."
At this point, it's been yet another full day since then with no change in the problem and zero usable communication from the "technical escalation" aspect of the situation.
I have probably "overcommunicated" here, but I thought it was worthwhile to make clear that I have been communicating repeatedly (3 times so far) with "first level" Skype support, but I don't know that there would be reason to expect it would do any good to chat with them again tonight.
The "just waiting in the dark" goes on.
    Thanks again!
