Slackware user - Arch install process and package management questions

I currently am using Slackware 12 with updates.  It has become increasingly cumbersome to compile new software given the number of dependencies that also have to be compiled, and have their own dependencies compiled, etc and so on.
Other than the fact that the adoption of new packages is somewhat glacial, and that there is no automatic dependency resolution, I really like Slackware.  Its fast, relatively easy to configure, and easy to use.  I'm conversant in commandline-ese.
I've been led to understand based on the Arch wiki that Arch is very similar to Slackware in its layout, but with bleeding edge packages and dependency resolution, so I would think it would be about perfect.
However, I also understand that the install is more difficult that Slackware.  How much more so is my question.  Is it impossibly confusing and unhelpful like Debian installation was, or just slightly more difficult than Slackware or FreeBSD (both of which have very smooth installation scripts)
Also, for packages that have to be compiled from source, are dependancies easy to satisfy from the arch repository, or do dependencies for new software have to be compiled with their dependencies.
I'd probably just be trashing everything but /home, and doing a clean reinstall.
Is Arch the right distro for me, or am I better off staying with Slackware?  Like I said, I really like Slackware except for the package management issues.

You are right about that.

They are quite similar, but Slackware provides more help when doing tasks like - how can I partition my harddisk and so on. But If you're comfortable with Slack's install procedure then installing Arch is much easier, just read the install guide.
I think Arch is good for you, because currently I have both - Slackware and Arch and both suit me fine for my needs.

  • Available APIs for process and package management

Hello All and welcome to my Hello All:
Welcome to my inaugural post. I am a complete noob to Solaris (although I have been using Linux for 5+ years) and am in the process of trying to get a handle on what local C/C++ APIs (if any) are available for management. Specifically, I am looking to find out about process and package management.
For process management, basically I would like to know is there some kind of interface to the the prstat application (ie. Memory and CPU utilization). Does something like this exist?
For package management, I am looking for the ability to add, remove, and query the package database. Correct me if I am wrong, but the Solaris package database seems similar to that of a Debian system (at least from the perspective that the informational files are stored as plain text in a well-defined directory [ie /var/sadm/pkg/]).
I have installed Solaris 10 on an x86 machine with a full installation; however, of the installed development kits (listed below) nothing jumped out at me.

I've placed orders for Solaris Internals and Solaris Performance & Tuning (that should arrive tomorrow), but I was hoping that someone could give me a gentle push (or perhaps a swift kick) in a general direction. :)
    Thanks.

For process management, basically I would like to
know is there some kind of interface to the the
prstat application (ie. Memory and CPU utilization).
Does something like this exist? Not prstat (although you could 'truss' it and see some of what it's doing to collect the information). kstat is available with a C interface and through perl/shell. It has several CPU fields. It's certainly useful for monitoring, but read-only. I'm not sure what you're looking for in terms of "management".
Also 'dtrace' can provide tons of dynamic information, but that's not necessarily what you're looking for.
For package management, I am looking for the ability
to add, remove, and query the package database.
Correct me if I am wrong, but the Solaris package
database seems similar to that of a Debian system
(at least from the perspective that the
informational files are stored as plain text in a
well-defined directory [ie /var/sadm/pkg/]).Yes, although it's based on the SysV packaging system. I don't believe there's any API for it outside of the 'pkg*' utilities.

  • Is the Arch install process the same as Mint's?

1.)Taking into consideation that it took me a few trys to even register for the forum (facepalms) and that I have only ever been a Mint user, how does the Arch install process compare to that of Mints?
2.)Will the install for a duel boot with Windows 7 be just as easy with Arch as it is with Mint?
3.)Are my questions an indication that I am probably not ready for Arch? (laughs)
4.)I really only use the Linux half of my duel boot when I am on unsecure networks while travleing and it makes me feel safer etc.. and when I do use it it's really just for browsing the internet. Should I just stick with Mint if thats all I really do?
I have heard only good things about Arch and if it's not going to make me want to rip out my hair, I would certinly like to reaplce Mint with Arch. Thank you for your time and help.

I came from Mint to Arch, via Debian and LFS. With regards to Grub, I'm still using the same grub installed by Mint two years ago, even though I no longer have Mint on the system. However, I do use a separate /boot partition and I'm comfortable editing grub.cfg directly when required. It does, however, mean that I never have to worry about adding a new OS for dual boot. Having said that, it's certainly not something I would suggest to anyone with limited experience.
Don't let others put you off with the "Arch is high maintenance" thing. If I'm honest, I don't find Arch significantly more high maintenance than any other Linux distro, though certainly during install and initial set up it helps if you have a reasonably good understanding of how the system is configured. Whereas the likes of Mint and other pre-built general distros have most of the system configuration done for you out of the box, on Arch you have to walk the extra mile and do it yourself. Linux is like women. The more you have to do to get them, the more you will get out of them in the end
Nevertheless, I fully agree with the "Test in a VM and get comfortable" philosophy first. This will help when you eventually come to a full install significantly. I did two test installs before a complete one, noting down where I had to pay particular attention. Also make sure that you don't need any firmware files, especially for network, when installing for real, or at least get the files and put them on a USB stick. Nothing worse than installing a system them not having any network to get the firmware required to get the network working. Catch 22 anyone?

  • BPM Process and data management

    Greetings,
I want to ask a question related with best practice topics. What is the best way to manage the information generated by process execution?. Its ok to have a database different from the workflow database to store the most important data.
I know this could be somethig redundant, but its easier to manage the data this way because managing an accessing the "BLOBs" in the workflow repository is not easy. Its there any advice in relation to this topic, any link or document ?

    Hi Christian, thanks!
What I'm missing also within Process and Task Management Facade is the link between ProcessInstance and related TaskInstances.
I know I can get tasks for a user by Status or ID. But I see no way to get a set of tasks for a certain process Instance.
Will Process and Task Management Facade also be enhanced for SAP NW CE 7.3 EHP1?
Is it already known what new features will be available or is this information published during TechEd?

  • Installing Security and Compliance Manager on Windows 8.1

    Hi
I am trying to install Security and Compliance Manager on my Windows 8.1 workstation.  The install is trying to install SQL Express 2008 which seems to not be compatible with Windows 8.1 and that is were the install ends.
I tried installing SQL Express 2012 and then running the install but it looks like the database is not installed.
Is there a new version of Security and Compliance Manager that addresses this or does anyone know how to set up SQL to accept Compliance Manager?

Open Regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
Delete this key under Session Manager "PendingFileRenameOperations". Restart the installation and it will work fine.

  • Installed Extensions and Package names

I've read through reams of documentation about installed extensions and have experimented with putting jars into %JRE%/lib/ext, etc. My question is - is it possible to put jars that contain classes with system package (java.*) names and use them?
This might sound like a strange thing to want to do, but I've been experimenting with the Long Term Persistence mechanism (http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/articles/persistence2/) which comes as a jar with classes of the package 'java.beans'. To use this from the command line I have been using the -Xbootclasspath option to include the jar. However, I want to deploy my app through Java Web Start and cannot (as far as I know) use that as a JVM option.
My last hope is that I can install these jars as extensions on the client and see if I can pick up the classes there. Is this a security violation though - using system package names for extensions?
    Cheers
    AlanB
P.S. I could use JDK1.4 which has the persistence mechanism as standard but the app server I'm using has 'mucho grande' problems with clients using 1.4!

My last hope is that I can install these jars as
extensions on the client and see if I can pick up the
classes there. Is this a security violation though -
using system package names for extensions?Unfortunately, I do believe this is the case... the only classloader that is permitted to load java.* packages is the bootstrap loader.
There is one way to know for sure, though... ;-)

  • Install process/script stops by itself and reverses install process and will not complete.

I go to install acrob XI pro and I go thru the majority of the install process until it seems to hit the file adobepdf.cat and the install process stops and reverses itself and them uninstall everything and end telling me that it did not install because it got interrupted. I have not security setting to stop the install and I have the administrator rights.  Please help!!  Bought it in September 2014 and still can not install.

I am using Windows 7 Professional.
I did disable all of the anti-virus programs. I worked with my IT staff for
about 4 hours and finally was able to have version 8 of Adobe Acrobat and
that would install.  We have licenses for versions that go back to Acrobat
5, but XI, X and IX versions all had the same problem with "rolling back"
the install.  Otherwise we received no error message other than the "wizard
was interrupted before Adobe Acrobat XI could be completely installed."
Attached is a gif of the screen message.
Later, I plan to save my setup and then try to do an update to Acrobat XI
and see if that will work.  For now, I am just happy with having any
    version on my system working.

  • Insert new user column in pick and pack manager window

    Hi all,
Exist a way to insert new column in pick and pack manager window?
I try  by code too but i can´t. Is possible to do this?
    Thank you all again.
    Regards.

    Hi Aitor,
Unfortunately, I don't think it is possible to add columns to this particular window. I had a requirement to do this a while back in SBO 2005A SP1 and I ended up designing my own pick and pack window.
    Kind Regards,

  • Package manager - question?

    Hello folks,
I wish to know why Package manager in openSolaris is so
slow application. I know that it is written in Python, but
I still do not understand why somebody did not offer some
patch for that application. I will help honestly in programming
    if you need coders.

Please send your question to [email protected] That is the best place for discussion OpenSolaris packaging tools such as packagemanager. This forum is better for Solaris installation issues (from Solaris 10 and SXCE, for example).

  • Does arch install library and header files into system when using abs?

In traditional make way, when compiling a package, I must install some library or header file or tool packages to satisfy its depends, but after compilation, I do "make install", and run it. At runtime, library and header file and tool packages are not needed....
This make a lot of unuseful packages are left in the system.....
In arch linux , when I using abs to make a package, does these packages are left in the system ?
How abs separates the compile-time depends and the runtime depends ????

Who remove them ? user or the abs ??
I think the best method is file dependence , not package dependence.....
Software is arranged by package. but its dependence is file. When Install a package, pacman check its file dependence, and install the packages which include those files....
If a  not explicit installed package 's file does not required by any other packages , it can be removed automatically !
In this situation ,pacman can find packages that not needed after compilation, and remove them.

  • PP-PI - Process message processing and batch management in PI_CONS message

    Hi All,
Hope you can help me to find the better solution... I will try to explain my scenario
Scenario: to control the production run PP-PI module is in use. Process order are created in SAP system and then transferred to the process control system where the execution of the process order is controlled On-line. Once per month the confirmations are transferred from this control system to SAP. In the Process control system batch are not managed. For good issue posting standard process message PI_CONS is used.
Now we have the situation that some raw materials used for process order processing are managed with batch. During the process order creation the batch related with this raw materials can be determined, only during the month when the raw material is entered in the plant is where the batch is determined. At the end of the month the batch of this materials is available in the SAP system (not in the process control system). Due to behavior of PI_CONS regarding batch if this characteristic is not informed in the process message or in the reservation an issue is trigger. My doubts are:
1.- If I need inform the batch  during this confirmation ,an even split the quantities in the process message according the batch availability, I'm force to use a custom process message or there is other workaround? (remember is not feasible send the batch to the process control system)
2.- probably i miss something because I'm can't debug the execution of the process message. How can I debug the execution of a manually created process message?
Sorry for the long explanation I try to explain my scenario as better as possible.
Thanks in advance for your valuable inputs.

    Thanks for your replay.
No really I don't like to make  the batch mandatory, during the good issue is not feasible inform the batch due to it is not managed in the Process Control System. Due to the behavior of PI_CONS if for batch managed materials the batch is not informed in the message or in the reservation an error is trigger. In the reservation snot feasible inform the batch because in that moment is unknown.
My question is if it is feasible some how have like FIFO batch determination when the process message is processed without creating a custom message.
    Thanks in advance

  • Process and Form version question

a few questions related to the versions of Forms and Processes:
    1) in WorkSpace, launch a process, then put the form in "Draft".
then modify its XDP, the form gets a new version in the repository.
what's going to happen to my Draft?
when I launch the Draft again, will it use the new version or old version of the XDP?
    2) launch a process, starts the workflow,
    before the workflow completes,
(say, it has 5 user tasks, only 3 users have processed it)
I update the process map and/or the forms.
will that unfinished process instance follow the new workflow map? or the old?
    3) when there are unfinished 'running' process instances in the system,
    I deactivate the process.
what's going to happen to those unfinished instances?
will they still be able to complete?
    4) when there are unfinished process instances in the system,
but I don't want anybody to launch any new instances from WorkSpace,
    how do I do that?
do I remove its "TaskManager" endpoint? or?
    thanks
    James

1)Itll re-render the form so it will take the latest version from the repository.
2)It will follow the original process. Only initiating new processes will follow new process map. As for the forms, the new version will take effect immediately.
3a)what's going to happen to those unfinished instances?
Theyll stay in a running state in the database
3b)will they still be able to complete?
Not until you re-activate the process.
4)Yes you can remove/disable the endpoint.

  • CalDAV and Profile Manager question

I am attempting to set up CalDAV in Profile Manager for our mobile devices. I am applying these settings to a group. I can't complete configuring the CalDAV payload because Profile Manager tells me that a CalDAV username is required. Again, this profile is for a group, so each user should be entering his own username to connect to his personal calendar. I've included a screenshot below to illustrate what's happening.
Is there something I'm misunderstanding about how CalDAV needs to be configured, or is this a bug?

  • Training and event management questions

    Hi all,
as I am new to this topic I am facing some problems and did not found a solution yet. I hope that someone here can help me. Below the issues.
    1. How can I change the Info message which notifies you that the maximum capacity of the attendees have been reached therefore you will proceed to waiting list into a  Warning  message ?
    2. Is it possible to customize the Move up procedure for cancellation in such a way that one would be able to select not only  people from the waiting list, but also people from the prebooking list?
    3. Even though the factory calendar is selected the training still counts weekend days as training days, does anyone have a clue how can i fix this?
Thank you all in advance for your time.

    Hi,
thanks this one is ok, the one which I can not find is the info message for when the maximum capacity of the attendee list is reached:
'Optimum capacity reached, only essential or wait list bookings possible' This one I want to change into a warning message.
    br,
    Ovidiu
And I have a new question as well
In the Attendee List layout is it possible to add columns which are not in the column set from customizing e.g. Personnel subarea,
    Employee subgroup, Employee group etc?
    Thanks
