Sleep mode in protective case = overheat?

I like to shut the lid to my macbook and then resume instantly later, this leaves the little light pulsating like a heart which means its still on.
The thing is I read in the instruction booklet that adequate space must be given at the vents so that overheating may not occur. But I often put my Macbook in its protective casing (EZ Folder case) to prevent it getting scratched.
So can I leave my Macbook in the case when its on sleep or not? I have not had any problems thus far but I might further down the line..

Of concern is that the computer could be turned on while the lid is closed or the lid could become open while the computer is in a bag. Were this to happen and there wasn't sufficient ventilation the computer could overheat. It would be much better to shut the computer off when you store it like that to avoid the possibility of a problem. Alternatively, you can change the sleep mode to hibernate mode which turns the computer off but saves the computer's state when the lid is closed. The wake-up time takes a little longer than normal sleep but is still shorter than a cold restart.
To change to hibernate mode open the Terminal application and enter the following:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1
Press RETURN
To return to normal sleep mode:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3
Press RETURN
To see which mode is implemented enter:
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
Press RETURN

  • Screensaver / sleep mode password protection does not work

    Hello,
    I am running 10.6.4 and have enabled screen saver and sleep mode password protection from System Preferences / Security / General / Require password immediately after sleep or screen saver begins.
    I have also selected some screen saver - Cosmos. Now, from terminal when I check the settings:
    MINE:~ ent$ defaults -currentHost read com.apple.screensaver
    CleanExit = YES;
    PrefsVersion = 100;
    mainScreenOnly = 0;
    moduleDict = {
    iLifeMediaGroupType = 0;
    moduleName = Cosmos;
    path = "/System/Library/Screen Savers/Cosmos.slideSaver";
    type = 4;
    showClock = 1;
    tokenRemovalAction = 0;
    MINE:~ ent$ defaults read com.apple.screensaver {
    askForPassword = 1;
    askForPasswordDelay = 0;
    tokenRemovalAction = 0;
    So the settings get applied correctly.
    The problem is - after screen saver kicks in or when MacBook goes into sleep mode and I want to continue work - no password prompt appears and I go back to desktop without any authorization!
    I see this behaviour on admin user account, but when I login in as root - prompt appears and asks for password to unlock desktop.
    Can you help me troubleshoot the problem? How can I log /see what is happeining after screen saver is terminated by mouse move or key stroke?
    Regards,
    Krzysztof

    Gals, Gents,
    I actually figured out the root cause of the problem. I am using EncFS to encrypt my home folder and each time the user logs in a script is being executed:
    MINE:~ ent$ cat /Library/Management/loginhook.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    # $1 = logged in usernam
    # try to mount /e using encfs entry in keychain
    PASS=$(security find-generic-password -ga EncFS 2>&1 >/dev/null | cut -d'"' -f2)
    RAW="/Users/.$1"
    MOUNTPOINT="/Users/$1"
    echo $PASS | sudo -u $1 /usr/local/bin/encfs -S $RAW $MOUNTPOINT
    It is executed as a login hook, so:
    MINE:~ ent$ sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow
    LoginHook = "/Library/Management/loginhook.sh";
    LogoutHook = "/Library/Management/logouthook.sh";
    The problem with that is that most probably all the Library settings are first read and only after that is the login hook executed. What it actually does is decrypting the EncFS volume and mounting it to the /Users/enc.
    So... Library folder get's substituted and I can work on Library preferences files from my account, but they are not visible during the login process.
    Anybody know how I can change this process to enable login script before Library is ever read?
    I managed to work around with screen saver protection by adding it globally to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist instead of local ~/Library/Pref..
    But obiously that is not how it should be dealt with...
    Thanks,
    Krzysztof

  • Can I password protect Sleep mode without protecting the screen saver too?

    I don't want to enter a password for the screen saver (I'd have to do it 500 times a day). A password for waking from sleep mode only would be very helpful.
    Thanks for any help

    There is just the one option that password protects both in the Security pane of the System Preferences.

  • Is it ok to put iPad 2 in a plastic bag in sleep mode?

    Is it ok to put iPad 2 in a plastic bag in sleep mode. Will it overheat? Or should I turn it off completely?  I need to seal the iPad in a 1 gallong plastic bag to protect it from rain, and I am worried about it overheating in sleep mode, since it is still running some functions.
    thanks, Kevin

    I'd like to slightly echo the comments from "Tex."  I have a possibly illogical objection to putting any heat-producing object inside a plastic bag.  If there is some reason why you don't want to turn the iPad off, leave the bag cracked open and hold it with the opening down (but carry it such that the iPad doesn't fall out).
    I had a friend that went by the nickname "Tex."  He was from Louisiana but didn't want to be called "Louise!"

  • T6x: IP Conflict after sleep mode using Symantec Endpoint Protection server.

    Here is the problem I'm having: We have several t6x laptops running various versions of Vista (business, enterprise, ultimate, x86 and x64), and we have Symantec Endpoint Protection server with client distributed to laptops.
    Every possible thing is at the latest level downloadable from MS, Symantec, Lenovo. HW is not malfunctioning in any way.
    If a laptop enters sleep mode and wakes up, windows return an error stating there is an IP conflict with the other computer on the network (with the same IP address and the same MAC addr !?). Other than that bluetooth and tpm drivers fail as well.
    If Endpoint protection is uninstalled laptops wake from sleep/hibernation without problem.
    If anyone has a clue what is going on please share the info...

    Hello redrum781, welcome to Lenovo forums!
    I have done a forums search for "symantec endpoint protection".
    It reveals there were a lot of problems with it, wireless disconnects or C++ errors.
    I would suggest to use a different antivirus solution, if this is applicable for you.

  • T440s display won't wake up from password-protected sleep mode

    The display on my new T440s stays off and cannot be recovered, when it is in password-protected sleep mode (or when it has gone to sleep from password-protected screen saver mode). The only way to recover is to press the power button to shut down completely, and reboot the computer.
     When I remove the password protection from sleep mode,  the display turns on and off as expected during sleep/wake cycles.
    Have any of you experienced this?  Is there a fix?  I do want to use password protection in sleep mode for security.
    Thanks.

    I posted this yesterday on another Mac site and thought I'd post it here, too, since my experience is similar to rmckillen's, and BobThe Developer has an explanation for it (thanks!). I've had my 15" MacBook Pro for almost 3 months, and it's been working fine until now. Tonight after it went to sleep while open, I tried to wake it up and the screen stayed dark, though you could faintly see what was on it. When I tried pressing the power button, I could see through the darkness that I was getting the usual message asking if I wanted to shut down. I waited for the approximately 2 minutes for that to happen, and then the machine appeared to shut down for a few seconds--only then the dark screen with faintly visible image of what was really there appeared again. I tried closing the machine and opening it again, but that didn't help, nor did clicking the mouse. The only thing that worked was forcing a quit by pressing command-control-power all at once. The machine shut down, and then when I turned it on again, everything was back to normal. My question now is, should I bring my machine in to Apple about this--will it be something they can fix, or is it just a problem I'll have to live with (or will the next operating system address it?)? Thanks...

  • Is the hard drive protected in sleep mode?

    Can I transport a macbook pro in sleep mode with as much confidence as if the computer is turned off?

    Only thing I can add to the excellent explanation is that you make sure the Mac is sleeping before jostling begins. When fully asleep, the white pilot light up on the front edge should be pulsing ("breathing"). When you first sleep it either via menu or by closing the lid, the pilot will turn on at full brightness (cause the screen and GPU have shut down) and will remain like that while the sleepimage is saved on the HDD. Only until "breathing" begins will the HDD have spun down and parked safely. How much time this will take depends on how much memory the Mac has (size of the sleepimage).

  • Sonnet eSATA PCIe card prevents waking from sleep mode

    Tried 2 x (removing card and then reinstalling). If the MacPro goes into sleep mode with the E4P card installed (v2.1.7 driver), then it will not wake up (mouse, keyboard or power button). Only recourse is power off.
    Looks like a new driver required from Sonnet.

    A new driver, version 2.1.8b1, is available.
    Email Neal via [email protected] to obtain it.
    He said that 10 users have already installed it and so far are happy.
    Be sure to provide him with feedback in case it needs a little more tweaking.

  • Thinkpad w530 Overheating on Attempted Sleep Mode

    Mark_Lenovo
    I am reaching out to you via this forum, as you appear to be informed and proactive regarding this issue of overheating on attempted sleep mode. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad w530 (purchased which has twice overheated and crashed after I closed the laptop lid. Both times I returned to the laptop to find it extremely hot to the touch and requiring a hard shut down (holding the power key for several seconds) followed by a reboot. It appears that the machine is not determining it needs to go into sleep mode, and the fan is not running, causing it to overheat. I have contacted technical support and they have assigned me a case number and are sending out a box for return. The technical support rep seemed to think it was a fan malfunction and that replacing the fan would be warranted, but based on my experience and what I have read on this forum, I think that is unlikely the cause.
    Can you please contact me to help me coordinate a solution to this distressing problem?
    For those interested, a few weeks ago I had to send the w530 back for repair of a non-functional webcam. It was fixed, but in the process tech support wiped my hard drive, such that I had to reinstall all the software, and windows updates etc., which was a big hassle. So it appears that people’s concern regarding the quality of thinkpads is borne out, at least by my individual experience.

  • Mac book air mid 2013, warms to approx 65 degrees when in sleep mode for 2 to 3 hrs?

    Hello,
    I have recently noticed that my macbook air mid 2013 warms up to approx 65 degs when in sleep mode for 2 hours or when I am doing my normal work. I am running Mevricks and I also use a moshi key board cover. Is it a cause of concern??

    The keys without covers already transfer to a small degree finger oil to the LCD screen of the Air, even the thinnest keyboard covers place pressure on the LCD, however normally this would have no bearing unless stowed away in a pack with pressure, nevertheless causing dirt and oils is increased with covers to transfer more to the LCD, ....Macbook Air as well.
    Beware of keyboard covers and using same
    Beware of using thick keyboard covers on your Macbook, some pretty ones sold online are rather thick and upon closing your monitor, touch the screen and transfer more finger/hand oil to the LCD but at worst press excessively on the LCD display, especially in the case of the Air and newest Macbook Pro Retina. There is ultimately very little purposeful use of these keyboard covers if you keep your hands clean, additionally they do not protect against spills as many people presume they do; directly yes, but at the edges no. They also making typing a more challenging experience and run a fine line between 'serves no purpose' and 'possibly damaging'.
    Screen covers protect against nothing and place an unwanted layer between the LCD and viewing, additionally if you dont touch same or dont have any pets that might claw at the screen there is no logical reason to have a screen shield.
    dust will accumulate regardless.    Realistically what are you trying to protect the screen from.  The back is solid aluminum alloy, the front LCD viewing screen should never be intentionally touched.
    outside of a sneeze or some debris which an extremely lightly damp cloth can remove, all else is dust. ...
    Use a soft paintbrush or makeup brush for cleaning
    One very useful tool for cleaning dust from the LCD screen, the hinge area of your notebook and around the keyboard, is a very soft inexpensive small paintbrush or a makeup brush. The less you wipe your LCD screen with anything like a cloth, the better. This small brush is very handy, quick, and ideal for removing dust from around and on your notebook.

  • IPhone 4 doesn't wake up from the Sleep Mode

    iPhone 4 32Gb doesn't wake up from the sleep mode. When the iPhone goes into the sleep mode, I can't wake it up with the 'Power' button, neither with the 'Home' button. The phone is working, I even can hear the sound of 'unblock' slider if u touch and slide the screen at the place where the 'unblock' slider suppose to be, but the screen remains black. I have to push the 'Home' or 'Power' buttons MAAAANY TIMES to make the screen appear finally. Sometimes I need to push it 30 or 40 times!!! Or I just have to reboot the phone to make it work. But right after it goes into the sleep mode, I can't wake it again But when the phone is connected to iTunes, the sleep mode is working good (one push on the button and the phone is awaken). I tried to upgrade to 5.01 but nothing have changed. Also I've tried to synchronize the phone as 'New', but no luck again, the problem is still on the case. What I have to do? Do someone have the same problem? In Russia we have no official Apple Stores and my iPhone 4 is from Malaysia. So I can't just go to the Apple office and replace the phone. What can I do?

    No, I don't have a case only a protective membrane on the screen... and I've tried to reset the iPhone by holding the 'Power' and 'Home' buttons with no result. After this reset the phone is working normally sometimes for about ten minutes (wakes up after one push), but then it's all repeats. And I repeat, that if I connect the iPhone to the PC with the USB-cable, the sleep mode is working fine, just like it should (I can wake the phone with one button push).

    Trying to decipher the system log seems to indicate a problem with my USB hub, the iMac doesn't seem to be able to communicate with it. This has happened before - usually there are no applications open and the computer is in sleep mode. The problem then occurs when I try to wake it; usually a light blinks on the Iogear hub for a short time and then goes out - when I get a panic, three lights stay on continuously, the fans are whirring and absolutely nothing happens, the screen remains black. There also is no pulsating light on the front bezel of the iMac. The only solution is a forced shutdown. Once I restarted, all seemed well again. BTW, this hub (hub/card reader combo) does not have any lights on when everything is working as it should.
    I also just remembered that occasionally, my keyboard or mouse (both plugged into the hub) will become unresponsive; once I unplug them and plug back in, they're fine. I've already tried a different hub (Macally) and the very same thing happened. I don't know if these could be related?

    Hi, Barbara.
    The line
    Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x400 - Inst access
    in your panic log indicates an 0x400 (Instruction Access) panic. An 0x400 (Instruction access) panic occurs when the processor cannot access the next instruction to be executed.
    Potential causes include RAM problems, hard disk corruption, and programming errors. "Programming errors" in this case can include invalid instructions and violations of protected memory, however it is often difficult to differentiate a programming error from a RAM or hard disk problem since the latter two issues can cause a valid instruction to appear invalid. Likewise, this opens the door to the potential for processor errors, i.e. defective processor or other problems with the logic board.
    Kernel loadable modules in the backtrace are flagging
    com.apple.iokit.IOSCSIArchitectureModelFamily(1.4.4)@0x52c000
    This indicates an issue with "...SCSI, USB (Storage), FireWire SBP-2 and ATAPI devices."as described here.
    It could very likely be the USB hub/card-reader combo you cited, or it could be a deeper problem with your Mac. Does the problem occur when you have media in the card reader of the USB hub/card-reader combo?

  • What is a good protective case for the ipad 4th gen?

    Hi,
    I recently bought my first iPad (ipad 4). I want to get a protective case in case I drop it. Some of the features I want include, 360 degree viewing angle, auto wake and sleep (doesn’t have to have this but would be nice) I don’t want big case like the otter box cases. I want a folio case with different viewing angles.
    the reason i want it to rotate is because i want to record lectures. so if you know of any cases let me know!
    if you could help me out that would be great! I have been researching for over a week! You guys have never failed me before!
    is the ipad smart COVER offer any protection?
    Thanks
    Austin

    For drop protection, you aren't going to get much better than the Otter, but yes it will add some bulk to the iPad (really any high level drop protection case will). That isn't to say other cases will not offer some protection against dropping, but not as effective. The Apple Smart cover offers no back protection at all, and the Smart Case only minimal.
    Not sure what you mean by "360 degree viewing angle" or why it would matter. Any case offering a portrait and a landscape orientation should work. (also not so sure how effective at recording lectures the iPad would be). There are literally hundreds of polio type cases available. Most will offer a number of angles in landscape mode, but fewer for portrait mode.
    Even some fairly inexpensive folio cases offer the smart cover function.
    I would recommend a trip to a full service electronics store such as Best Buy and have a look yourself. Really the only way you will be able to make a decision.

  • Iphone 4 battery draining while in sleep mode

    I have noticed over the past few days that after putting my iphone 4 into *sleep mode* and not using it for several hours that the battery percentage is significantly lower after powering it back up. I first became aware of this after waking up to find my battery was at 50% (8 hours before I went to sleep it was 90%). Just today I was using my phone and the battery was at exactly 85%, I turn it off and an hour later I check the battery at its at 77%!!! I then go for a 45min run (leaving the phone at the house) and coming back I see that it is at 73%.
    I don't know if this is a battery issue or a problem with the wifi/3g working when the phone is in sleep mode. My parents both have the 3GS and they do not experience this with their phones.
    I have had this phone for 2 weeks and I don't want to have to send it back so please tell me this is a software/settings problem and not with the hardware!!
    I haven't changed any settings or downloaded any apps since I got the phone (Except for the free case app). I did however sync my email address with the phone so it may be a problem with that I don't know.
    I am also on the original firmware that came with the iPhone 4 I have not updated that yet.

I put the phone upstairs in my room last night where the is better AT&T signal and my battery has not dropped off at all.
    That could be the issue. Your phone is only getting 1 signal or no service, and is trying to work hard trying to find good service in your basement. Try setting the phone on the first floor where you get good signal and see if that fixes your battery issue,.
