Sleep problem, takes awhile to go to sleep, then starts up again??

Hi, when I put it to sleep, it takes awhile for the screen to go black, then I hear the click of it turning back on ... hope someone knows what's going on, I've tried unplugging it, it didn't work. Thanks very much.

Hi Barry,
Here's what I found, I don't know what it says though, does it make any sense to you?
Thanks,
Vicki

• 11inch air turns off when sleep due to unknown problem/takes awhile to fire up

Hello,
Since the update to Mavericks i've noticed everytime i put my macbook air to sleep for longer than a few minutes.. it's shut itself off and when it fire up (after holding the power button for quite a few seconds) it comes up saying it turned off due to an unknown problem.
This never used to happen, I bought the Macbook Air 11 inch in September so its still fairly new. Is there anything im missing here - everythings up to date. I dont know if i should take it to genius bar yet or if theres something i could try to fix it.

You are not alone.  This is a very active topic.  See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5495588?start=0&tstart=0
The remedy mentioned several times in that thread is to reset SMC + PRAM and in check "Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.  It is not a perfect solution.  The problem reoccurs for some people.
SMC reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
PRAM reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
 > System Preferences > Energy Saver
> Battery > uncheck “Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.
> Power Adapter > uncheck “Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.
If that does not do the job, go to an Apple store for a repair or replacement.
Actually, given this is an intermittent problem for others, you may want to take it to an Apple store before you try to make it better to have it fail in their presence.  After that try the fixes and if the problem comes back you will have a documented case for Apple to repair or replace the unit.

• Powerbook G4 goes to sleep while starting up.

My Powerbook G4 won't start up. It gets to the screen where the blue bar starts filling across. It gets usually less than half way and then goes to sleep.
The only way to get any response is to disconnect all power and then start over again. I have tried resetting things by holding down various keys and starting up- all of the different variations that are on the different support pages, but I always get the same result.
Please help.

• Computer from Sleep now starts up and shut downs, starts up shut down, ...

Computer had been running this morning and I was away for a couple of hours.  When I returned I found that my HP S5780t was shutting down then starting up again, then shutting down, starting up, ...  Power supply LED shows green, disconnected hard drive and DVD drive and same condition exists. BIOS screen does not show up.   All three fans working properly.  Monitor shows initial HP screen but machine shuts down before anything can happed.  Tried F10 but machine still shuts down.  Machine will continue in this mode until I press and hold the power button for several seconds.  Looks at some other messages regarding this issue but did not find anything that solves my problem.
Thanks,
This question was solved.

I called tech support regarding repair options and they mentioned $299 to fix it no matter what the problem.  This does not sound like a bad deal.
I'll wait until my new computer arrives, move the information from the dead computer's hard drive to the new one and then send in the unit.
Thank-you for your help.

Consider adding more memory. Be sure you have adequate free space on the hard drive - 15 GBs or 10% of the drive's capacity, whichever is greater. Do not run too many applications concurrently. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving the SBBOD.
Do some maintenance:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
SuperDuper!
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

• MacBook Pro Problems - Take It In?

Hello,
I have a 6 month old MacBook Pro, covered under full AppleCare.
I have had numerous problems with it (both hardware and software) and frankly, I am not too happy.
1. Scratch on case.
My laptop somehow got a thin scratch on the top of it. It was put safely in a backpack with a laptop compartment and there was nothing sharp in the bag. I don't understand why it scratched so easily. And it is a noticeable, black, scratch.
2. Screeching optical drive.
For some reason, when a DVD was in my optical drive, I picked up the laptop and it made a horrible screeching noise when I moved the computer around. I also have an old PowerBook G4 and it does not have this problem.
3. Sleep.
When I close my MacBook Pro, I expect it to go to sleep. Actually, it takes about 2 minutes for the computer to stop humming and go to sleep and the light to come on.
4. Plugging in USB/Charger.
When my laptop is asleep and I plug something in to its USB ports, the laptop turns on (the Apple logo illuminates) and then turns off again. If I plug a charger in, nothing happens. If I pull a charger out, the laptop turns on and off again. If I pull USB out, nothing happens.
5. Sticky Mouse (resolved)
For some reason, my clicker (on below the trackpad) was very sticky for some period of time. Whenever I pressed it, it seemed to click twice. This seems to have resolved itself somehow.
6. 4GB RAM, 7200RPM HDD
I have 4GB of RAM installed on my computer. For some reason, the laptop doesn't seem to be using this RAM because I have frequent freezes of applications and it does not seem to be going faster than a G4 iMac I used to have (1.25GHz, 1.25GB RAM).
7. Airport Card
There seems to be something wrong with the Airport Card on my laptop. For some reason, even when I am right next to a Airport Express, it comes up as 3 bars of signal. I then turn Airport off and then on and it seems to get full bars. Second, I have two Airports in my house, an Express on the 1st floor and an Extreme Base Station on the ground floor. When I take my laptop from my room on the first floor, down to the room where the Extreme is, the laptop, instead of switching to the Extreme, still tries to find the Express, therefore giving me low bars of signal. I then have to turn Airport off and on and then it connects to the Express.
There you have it. Sorry to be complaining so much, but I really am upset with this laptop and would like a replacement unit. Should I go into an Apple Store? What exactly should I ask them and how?
Thanks so much!

Yes, absolutely! Take it in along with a printed copy of the problems. That way if they need to keep it for a few days, you have given the tech folks a laundry list of what needs fixing.
Good luck and report back what you find out.

• Backlight goes on when waking from sleep, then turns off.

A little bit of water got into the keyboard of my iBook G4 14" last night. Mopped it up and it was fine for two hours after that. This morning, the backlight will not turn on unless you close the display lid, and it will flash on for a split second, then turn off again, which is different from most questions I see posted here. Of course, I can still see the image on the display by putting it close to light. Suggestions?

Same issue.
Often my MBP (1.83 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM) will not wake from sleep initially. If I close the cover and wait till the HD goes silent and then reopen, it will wake up. It's interesting though that even while in this condition, if an email comes in, there is a notification chime, so it seems that it is not really sleeping, just that the screen is black.
There is no problem if the computer has been sleeping for some time (more than 5 or 10 minutes) and the mouse is not moved, the power cord or my external mouse has not been connected or disconnected or the machine has not been moved so that the motion detector notices, but if any of those things hav happened, then it is a problem waking up.
I've replaced the RAM twice. At Apple Care's suggestion I did an Archive and Install. They suggested that if that did not work, to do an erase and install and then bring in my programs and data piece by piece. they think that it might have been caused by the initial migration of data from my former computer.
What has Apple Care told you??

• IMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart

Just bought a brand new 27" iMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) which shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart (ie completely dead).
In order to restart, I have to unplug the power cord from the computer, hold power key down for 10secs, replug in and it then starts up. I returned to the store and they spent a couple days letting it go to sleep etc and overnight and for them it was fine. Woke up no problems. They returned it to me yesterday.
So I set it all up again, left it overnight and this morning it was dead again. So now it leaves me to wonder if it's something I have plugged into it.
I have a new Seagate 3TB external hard drive hooked up using USB3.0. This is plugged directly into the back of the computer.
I also have a powered USB hub plugged into the computer which has regular USB stuff such as printer, graphics tablet and another external hard drive (this one is older LaCie 500gb, and have put it into a new USB 3.0 case as well for the arrival of the new iMac (this had an old firewire hard drive case). However this hard drive is switched off at the case and is not being used.
I believe it could possibly be the Seagate 3TB disk causing this problem, but it works fine during the day while I am using the computer, it's just when I either leave it at lunch time to go to a meeting or walk etc or overnight that I come back and it has shut down....leaving me to believe that it's due to the computer going to sleep.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Seagate drive? Today I'm conducting an experiment and heading off for lunch with both hard drives unhooked. If I come back and the computer wakes up from a click of the mouse or keyboard as it should, I will plug in one hard drive at a time and re-test. I will leave the Seagate for last, as I don't think it is the old LaCie disk (which is off).
For reference sake, I also have a NAS running off my network through Airport Extreme etc and have my old iMac hooked up to the network too, but don't believe this is the problem.
Initially I did put in some after market RAM (another 8GB) and though that might be the problem, but I removed and it still reacted the same way (plus store I bought it from again booted up fine and woke up fine at their shop after I had taken RAM out too).
Will keep this post updated with my next test (letting computer sleep without either hard drive in), but keen to hear if anyone has had any similar experiences with Seagate disks/cases and the new iMacs.
Cheers,
Kristin

Hey kristinandmike,
I had a similar problem shortly after I bought my 27" iMac. Here is an excerpt from my discussion:
"As BDAqua suggested, I started the process of elimination by shutting down the externals and just leaving up one of the USB drives and using the computer until time to shut it off. After eliminating 2 of the 3 drives I figured it had to be the last one. That drive is a Seagate GoFlex Desk version that allows different bases with differing connectivity. I had previously used FW800 to connect but had switched to USB3 on the new computer. I went ahead and got a Thunderbolt to FW adaptor cable and switched this drive back to Firewire rather than USB3. So far so good."
For some reason the Seagate I was using didn't agree with the USB3 on the Mac.

You have 2 unreachable statements in this method.
public static int eval(String s2, String op, String s3) {
return lookup(s2);
return lookup(op);
return lookup(s3);
} You're missing a } at the end of this method:
public static int lookup(String s) {
        for(int k = 0; k < symbols.length; k++){
            String symbol = symbols[k];
            if(s.equals(symbol))
                return k;
        }You have some loose } and ; at the end of the file:
public static void main(String args[])
commandline();
}

• HT201150 How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?

How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?
With the position of the power button on the Retina MacBooks, any mistake turns off the screen in the middle of a presentation or any activity using a projector or big screen — a huge waste of time to wake up the display, enter password, have the projector sync back, watch audience disconnecting from what was being discussed, etc.
This is very annoying, and seems to add to the increasing collection of options Apple decided to make by itself instead of allowing the user to choose.
Come on Apple guys, I'm using my Mac because I want options and lots of preferences to tweak to my needs.
If I needed the lobotomized version I'd be using my iPad!
Any way (official or hack) to change this button back to its proper funcionality?
Thanks!

Not what you want, but you can get the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by holding the power button

• New Window takes awhile to open

Whenever I try to open a new window, either by clicking New Window, hitting CTRL N, or clicking on a link to open a new window, it takes the window 30+ seconds to launch. While it is in the process of opening Firefox works normally and I can work in other windows without issue. Creating a new tab or opening links in a new tab works fine. Disabling add-ons did not fix the problem. Neither did uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox (same profile though). Doing a Refresh and having Firefox reset the profile DID fix the problem. However, as soon as I set up Sync again with my primary desktop to restore my settings, etc. the problem came back. I have had this problem for as long as I can remember, but just didn't have time to troubleshoot it until now. I am guessing there is a setting buried in one of the files and I am hoping someone can help me change it so I don't have to start from scratch rebuilding the profile the way I like it. Thanks for your time!

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
* Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
;
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Use the sim tool that came with your phone or a safety pin and just insert it into the hole at the side of the sim tray and push it in and then pull it out.  It is no more difficult than that and then just close it again.
