Slow down continues unabated and unresolved...
this started a few days ago - I received some responses but nothing seems to work. Now that I've tried eveything I can think of (even switching the hard drive...) I thought I'd start fresh here...
I had been out of town for a few days, left my Mac Pro turned off & unplugged, which I thought made sense.
Ever since I've returned, the same blankety-blank thing keeps happening: I restart and everything is fine. But after an hour or so, especially after 90 minutes, the whole system gets slower and slower, until it creeps down to a crawl. I hit a key on the keyboard and you can count the seconds before the key appears. The application switcher CTRL-TAB ceases to work at all.
Then I restart and the system is fine again - for about 90 minutes. It's time consuming and annoying to keep restarting, which takes a while. Obviously this is NOT a solution!
nothing fixes it - I've tried disk utility in the repair partition (fixing the permssions, verifying & repairing the disk),
I've tried zapping the p-ram - nohting..
this is a Mac Pro with plenty of ram - 16GB - the activity monitor does NOT indicate anything is hogging the ram...
also sufficient disc space - 42 GB free out of 265GB on the startup drive...
my best thought was to switch startup drives - I have a good backup from a month ago. So I re-started with the backup drive as the startup - no dice! That was my last resort. Whatever problem is in the system, the backup drive also slowed to an unbearable crawl after 90-120 minutes or so...
* I'm hoping maybe there will be an OS update shortly (don't know if I can wait)...
* I don't have anything I don't think that's still covered by applecare (unless it's the OS itself, which is less than a year old, I'm running the lates 10.7.... - I wonder if that would be supported by applecare - my hardware is from 2008...)
please some suggestions! a little help, please!
okay, this is when the system is fresh (everything is working fine), not when the slowdown is happening - I can post that in 90 minutes or so (alas!).

(can't remember the exact numbers... can't retain three of these numbers in my head long enough to write them all down, but that's generally the idea...)

Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:

After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.

About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup

Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. You calculated the time elapsed before sending in a server request - and at that point you have you updated timeLastStateChange yet, which means by the time of the next calculation of time elapsed this apparent delay is not counted in, hence the slow down in animation rate.

EA6200 slows down over time and needs reboot
Anyone with a EA6200 notice it slowing down after about a week of use? I just replaced my e2000 with a EA6200 and its runs very well for about a week. After about a week I notice it slows down. Pages start loading very slow on all of my devices on my 2.4ghz and 5ghz ssids. It slows down to a point where it takes forever just to get logged into the router to and get to the page where I can reboot it so I know its the router. Once I reboot it, it runs great for about another week. Its using newest firmware. I have 2.4ghz set to 20mhz and 5ghz set to 80mhz, channels set to auto. Nothing to customized beyond that.
Try:
Connectivity => Administration => Cut through Forwarding => Uncheck
If IPv6 isn't required by your ISP; Connectivity => Internet Settings => IPv6 => Edit => Uncheck Enable
Media Prioritization => Enable => Check
Media Prioritization => Settings and apply accurate Downstream and if available Upstream values; Initially keep all devices and Apps normal priority
If you have throughput issues on Wifi try Disabling WMM support (EA6200\6400); if no difference is notice re-enable WMM

Dreamweaver CS5.5 Slow down when minimising and loading pages.
Hi there
I'm having a really strange problem with Dreamweaver CS5.5
I'm currently in the process of building a CMS for a client and I am experience slow down in Dreamwever when opening and closing certain pages, it also causes slow down/hanging when opening and minimising Dreamweaver itself if these certain pages are open at the time. Which starts to get very annoying when you're swapping between Photoshop and Dreamweaver all the time...
I narrowed it down to a CSS file causing the slow down/hanging. This being the main stylesheet for the CMS... admin.css
When I comment out the CSS file Dreamweaver minimises and maximises quickly, and the page in question opens fast.
The stylesheet is about 900 lines long at the moment, but I've got php and javascript files (and also other CSS files) which are much longer and none of them cause slow down/hanging.
I've looked myself but from what I can see all of the CSS is valid.
Any ideas guys?

PSE 8 slows down when tagging and captioning
I'll start off will some system specs:
i5 m450 @ 2.40ghz
win7
4gb memory
approx 200 gb of free hd space
running pse8 with approx 39,000 images, very small amount of video clips.
people recognition and auto analyze are turned off.
The issue is that when adding tags and captioning to multiple files the application slows down and sometimes freezes for short amount of time.
Would installing additional ram totaling 8gb help this out or does ram play any role in the performance of the application?
Thanks in advancePSE is a 32 bit application so it is unable to ever use 8gb’s of RAM. If adding information on import try firstly to add the files and start tagging etc after all the thumbnail previews have been generated. Otherwise break your workflow down into smaller batches.

From the way you are describing it, it sounds like the HD has failed. Please look over Gray screen appears during startup for troubleshooting steps. You can also run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, it may take 2-3 passes for any error codes to appear and each pass takes approximately 30-60 minutes. However either way you should plan on taking it into an Apple Store or AASP for service.

Yosemite 10.10.2 update has slowed down my iMac and Macbook. Anyone else have this problem?
My iMac and Macbook were operating well until the Yosemite 10.10.2 update. Now, the wheel spins when I try to scroll down on pages, or when I try to move from screen to screen. Programs freeze up more often, needing to be forced to quit, or just crash altogether. Safari has been particularly affected. Both computers are only 6 months old. I close all other programs and Safari tabs, but this does not help.
(iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3; specs on Macbook not handy as I post this.)

How to slow down an mp3 and not alter pitch
I'm wondering if anyone knows a simple way to do (what I consider to be) a kareoke trick using Logic Pro 8. I just want to import a compressed file m4a or mp3 from itunes and slow it down without altering the pitch so I can practice along with it.
After trying the "adjust region length to match locator positions" my computer first: couldn't stretch a compressed file, and second: crashed after beginning to "process and convert".
All this seems so very complicated for such a simple task, I'm not overly concerned with quality, it can be a little bit distorted.
I'm sure there's a simpler way to do this! I just don't know it yet.

Thanks You!You can't destructively edit compressed formats in Logic so convert your mp3 to aiff/wav beforehand.
Then either do your adjustments in the sample editor->factory->time&pitch mashine or by using the "adjust region length to match locator positions".
You can also timestretch graphically in the Arrange by pressing option and dragging the lower right of your region to the right. -
so I have an iPhone 5c bought last summer, so it's not even a year old. I have never had any problems with the wifi until a day ago. Yesterday I updated to ios8.2 and my pone became really slow and buggy. And it won't connect to the wifi. I checked on my tablet and the wifi works fine on there. How do I fix this problem?
What troubleshooting steps have you attempted to correct this issue? I have a 5s running iOS 8.2 and have not experienced any problems. User troubleshooting steps are restart, reset, restore from backup and restore as new. Make sure you make a backup of the device before attempting any troubleshooting. If you go through all of the steps, including restore as new and then test the device before adding any content back to it and it is still not functioning correctly, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple store to have the hardware checked. If it functions correctly when restored as new, then try restoring the backup again. If it acts up after that, then there is something corrupt in your backup file. Restore as new again and sync your content back manually.

I have gotten results from, the down load will not start, to I get over 500MB of the 780MB than it stops and I lose it all. I have tried to do small blcks and pause, but whenever I pause the download it starts from the begining again. According to Itunes, my phone and Itunes are up to date. Does anyone have any ideas to help break up the download so I can get it in pieces and eventually have the full update to restore to?

However I do believe the hard drive had other issues that just might have been further compromised by downloading 5. Talked to a couple of others who have also had bad problems after downloading 5 and that is what really concerns me is that my problem is not isolated. I have just got my computer back up and running and am very concerned about continuing with the 5 upgrade that was automatically downloaded and will be installed the next time I start up. How do I prevent the download from installing upon start up next time until I can get some clearer info on why 5 is causing some problems and can avoid them?
My mother just had this problem. After uninstalling a bunch of search malware, i was still seeing the bing tab come up on start up. The way I fixed this is to delete any shortcuts, remove it from the task bar and the start menu list. It appears this crappy malware modified the firefox and chrome(if installed) shortcuts to open bing.
Of course another way is to modify the shortcuts to remove the link that they added. It was easier for me to remove and just re-pin.

IOS 4.2.1 slowing down all apps and reduces battery life on 3G
I am sure there will be many with this issue as most of us had to sign 2 year deals 2 years ago. After updating my 3G to 4.2.1, nothing works as it used to anymore. Anybody any tips?
Add me to the list. This is so frustrating, the battery life of my iPhone 3G (MB496BZ) after updating it to 4.2.1 is ridiculously short. I have noticed that apparently WiFi is always on now (even while on standby) and I really don't think turning it off before putting it to sleep is a viable option. Hasn't Apple tested this thing before releasing it? This is outrageous!
I also have an iPhone 4 (MC605BZ) and, although the battery draining issue is less apparent on the iPhone 4, it also has both "Usage" and "Standby" times exactly the same, hinting that the issue is also there...
Additionally, there was another topic on the forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12791776) that was a little bit more "energic" about this issue and it has been apparently PULLED OFF by Apple! What's going on here? Google cache has some of the history on that thread, but just up to Dec 21st. From Google's cached version, you are able to navigate to other pages on the thread... Very strange!
