Slow Lion Animations

I've got a mid-2011 21.5" iMac and today after I download Thunderbolt Software Update, Lion animations became very slow and sluggish, any help?

Nope, all you have to do is:
Lunch the Mac App Store
hold down the OPTION key and click on PURCHASES tab
You can see the OSX Lion and the gray Install Button.
If you do this correctly, there will be a "Install Mac OS X Lion" app in your application folder!

  • Native logic windows (like 'Go To') have a SLOW 'spring' animation

I'm new to Mountain Lion, and the first thing I've noticed while trying to get any work done, is hitting "Go To" to open the "GO To Position" window results in the window opening with this really silly spring/zoom effect.  I've tried everything I can think of, and I can't get rid of it.
I move FAST in Logic, and I'm used to not pausing after hitting my 'go to' key.  I'll hit "goto" and then immediate the Time Code or Bar number.
However, now, my input doesn't take because I'm doing it while that spring/zoom thing is happening.
I've tried disabling the 'spring folders' preference in Finder, and removed "Animate opening info panels and desktop icons" via TinkerTool.
Can anyone help me solve this problem?  It's a major groovebuster.

Yet another reason not to move to the ugly ML beast.
Sorry to be of no help, the "Go To" key command windows open lightning fast (as you know) in Snow Leopard.
I wonder if it's yet another symptom of the graphics slow down problem that has plagued other users. The one where Logic freezes if a plugin with an animated graphic interface is opened. (Logic's channel eq in hi-res analyze mode)

  • Slow gif animations from photoshop

Hi all. I have to create two small gif animations. Each one is only 10 frames and the file size of my animations is under 40k when exported. But no matter what timing setting I use, they seem sluggish when viewed in any browser (FF, IE, Safari). I've tried 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, and even 0.0 between frames. The animation should really only take half a second to complete but they seem to take up to two seconds to complete when view in a browser.
Yet I can view other gif animation on the web that are much larger in size and they seem to animate quickly and smoothly (compared to my slow and choppy ones).
is there a trick to getting fast, smooth animations from photoshop?
    Thanks!

    > via the gif animation import
There is no such feature in DW. DW knows nothing about GIF
    images other than
the fact that they are images. I'm guessing that you did not
    properly
export the animated GIF from Photoshop. When you open that
    image in the
    browser, does it animate?

  • So disappointed with the slow Lion performance & don't know what to do

I am an apple fan and I'm expressing my sincere disappointment! I guess those people who gave Lion 4-5 stars either installed it on their brilliant macbook pros or on those huge imacs or haven't used it before voting! I have a 2GB ram macbook and after installing lion it's gone terrible. Even text edit which is relatively a very light programme is not functioning many times!
I care about Apple and I think if they don't do something asap it's gonna turn to their version of Vista and change the OS game's balance.
I'm thinking of going back to Snow Leopard, that was way much faster. One funny thing is on AppStore it doesn't let me review the product saying you should have bought it from AppStore. Well of course I bought it from AppStore and you have it in your records, why don't you let me save others from this disaster. It takes a lot of my time now to go back to Snow Leopard. Honestly, with all due respect, and not in an angry mood Lion is bad! And makes your computer run much slower. DISAPPOINTED

Apple says 2gb of ram is the minimum needed for lion. If you have an older machine and just the minimum ram lion will be slower than SL. I worked with a friend who had a MacBook model with minimum ram. When he upgraded the ram to 4gb his machine was about 40% faster.
Memory is relatively inexpensive these days so you might consider buying some to get to 4 or 8 gb.

  • Slowing down animation...

    Hi All,
Once you have a fairly complicated sequence built up, is there some EASY way to slow the whole thing down? I thought I could just select everything and set a new out point, but all the keyframes/timings in the animations stay the same, and the end just extends to the new out as opposed to reworking the timings in proportion to the new length.
So far, I'm going in layer by layer and resetting points by hand as I can't seem to find an alternative.
    Thanks,
    ~Chris

I hope you get some decent advice, I have none to offer, sorry.
In After Effects, it's easy to select all the keyframes and drag them out so they adjust proportionately. It's a cool feature I could never live without. But I approach Motion projects slightly differently (probably incorrectly).
In Motion, if you had been using behaviors instead of keyframes, all you'd do is make some adjustments to the HUDs. I sympathize, I find this incredibly difficult to do.

  • Mac Pro 2013 Slow UI Animations

I have just got a new Mac Pro, its a six core model with d300's and 64GB of RAM. My problem is that i am having real slowdown when using mission control and when sliding between spaces using the mouse. I am running 2 4K displays with "retina" mode on scaling them to 2650x1440... Though i have tested with scaling off and i still have the problem albeit slightly better than with it on...
I am beyond disappointed with this and i am really considering sending it back, is this normal or could there be something wrong with my model? My 2011 iMac handles this better even at 30 hertz its much smoother. When i use only 1 screen the animations become smooth again.. Even after a reinstall of Yosemite i still have the issues..
Is this normal? Should i send it back?

Yeah was like this from day one (Yesterday ) and i didn't upgrade from an older OS it came with Yosemite pre installed. I have since reinstalled Yosemite without any change. I have also found a way to turn off "HighDPI" by holding alt to select scaled in display preferences and choosing a low resolution option. This has returned animations to super smooth! This is heartbreaking after buying 3 4K monitors and a nearly 4 grand computer
Here is my output from EtreCheck. I know there are lots of devices plugged in but last night when checked i was doing it with a clean 2 displays \(one via HDMI and one via TB). As i run this check i am not having the issue (explained how above) but i am desperate to use the 4K displays with High DPI.
    Problem description:
Mission control and space switching animations slow when using scaled desktop mode with HiDPI.

  • Slow down animated gif

I created an animated gif in Fireworks with 7 states. I set the properties state delay to 15 for all states, I also try 30 state delay for all states. When I preview in Fireworks, it's works. Then after I export it and open it in Firefox, Safari or mail programs everything gets ignored and the animation zooms through. Any idea how to slow down?
Would increasing the states help? Or using Photoshop instead work better? Thank you.

Are you on a Mac? If so, you can use Preview to view the GIF's contents. Inside Preview, choose Tools > Show Inspector (Command-I), then select the More Info and GIF tabs. From here, you can view the delay time for each individual frame, if one has been specified.
Incidentally, the pink character is a graphic (by Cory Thoman) from this tutorial on creating animated GIFs inside Photoshop's Image Ready: http://www.illustrationinfo.com/2008/09/12/create-animated-gifs-in-imageready/

  • Slow Lion

I was wondering whether anyone else is experiencing Lion as slow.  The install went fine but generally my MacBook Pro is slower with more multi-colored spinning wheels than I had seen before.  It just seems like it is lagging overall.  If anyone has any suggestions that might speed it up, I would appreicate your help.
I have a MacBook Pro, running Mac OS X 10.7, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 GB of memory.
    Thank You.

This is what I did and it seems to have been successful:
    Open Disk Utilities
Run Verify Disk->Use Repair Disk if necessary.
Run Verify Permissions->Run Repair Permissions.  I had a lot of errors.
Spotlight will reindex your disk, let it do it without opening a bunch of applications.
If necessary, restart your computer holding the alt-option key down, choose Recover and run Disk Utilities from there.  I did not need to do that.
Tell me if this works for you.

  • Slow Lion - really high virtual memory use

Lion is running really slow on both my Mac Mini and my Mac Book Pro. Both systems are less than two years old, both with 4 GB of RAM. I checked Activity Monitor (right after restart, running Chrome, Mail, and iTunes only) and I get a VM size of 266.42 GB! Is this normal? And could this be the reason why it seems so dreadfully slow?

    budusa,
Take a really deep breath and let it out. Relax. The universe is ok.
You have to step back at look at what your data is showing you.
    Physical Memory: 4 GB
Virtual Memory: 266.42 GB  < notice this larger than your physical.
Note the amount of memory used by your system, Wired, 675.4 MB. From what I understand so far of how OS X lion uses memory is that your system is using less a 1 gigabyte of memory.
Now note the amount of Inactive memory, 535.7 MB. I bet if you looked for the processes you used the amount they where accessing would equal that amount.
Also note your Active memory used, 1.52 GB. That was currently being used at the moment of your snapshot. Note also it could reflect was used recently also.
Ok, now look at your Free memory, 1.30 GB.
And the last part, the Used, 2.70 GB.
Do you notice something yet? Do you see it?
Ok, you have 4 GB of Physical RAM installed.
According to your information you used only, roughly, 2.70 GB of Physical RAM.
That means you used 2.70 of 4 GB of physical RAM.
Now if you notice your free memory, 1.30 GB.
    If you take 2.70 - 4 = 1.30 < notice the answer, Free memory, 1.30 GB.
Basically your system used 2.70 GB of 4 GB to run the applications listed.
Look at your Virtual Memory, 266.42 GB. Notice it larger than 2.70 GB?
My understanding of how a 64 bit OS works, and the key item why it works better than 32 bit, is the Virtual Address Space. This is how the OS allows programs to run with out taking up all the physical memory. The programs go there to play as I like to say. Another way to look at it is do want only 4 GB's or 8+ Terabyte's of Virtual Address Space?
So, the Virtual Memory you see is ok and is normal.
Do not follow some advice I have seen here about switching programs to run in 32 bit mode. You defeat the purpose of 64 bit.
If you system is running slow then look at your installed programs. Note also that if you have a small hard drive it can cause sluggishness too.
I hope this helped. Maybe it confused. Sorry for making it long as I did.

  • Slow, jumpy animation

    Hi there!
Can someone please tell me why the scrolling animation is so

    here .
    Thanks

  • Audio slower than anim

I searched through the forums and found a couple topics on
this, but the solutions were to set audio to stream (which I have
already done). I am creating a cartoon and the animation plays
faster than the audio. It's starts out fine, but by the end, the
audio is way off sync. I have all the sounds set to stream. I have
individually optimized them (trying to stay at 32 kbps, sometimes
lower), the sounds are cut in to small peaces (voice audio cut in
to individual sentences), my frame rate is 24 fps, and I'm using a
dual 2.5 ghz Mac G-5. What is really weird is, I set up a scene
selection menu, and even when you skip to a further along scene,
the audio is still out of sync. If I render the scene individually,
the sounds sync up perfect. It happens when I render the entire
animation... which is on about 3 minutes. I was hoping someone
might have a solution to this problem. Thanks for any help.

I have to guess without seeing it. Is the animation ahead of
the sound or does the sound play before the animation? I suspect
the animation is going too slow and the sound is playing first.
With streaming this shouldn't happen so it is a bit puzzling. Try
to preload everything in the beginning and see if that fixes the
    issue.

  • Slow Lion/MBP

The same with me.  I've tried all the recommendations, verify disk, repair permissions, and I even backed it up and installed it from the original factory settings, installed Onyx, etc.  My version of Lion is not an upgrade and I'm using a brand new Macbook Pro that is only one month old.  I don't have a lot of photos, videos, and third party software.  This computer was slow out of the box, especially when using the internet.  It doesn't seem to matter whether I use Safari or Firefox.  My daughter has an older Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard and she has no issues.  I'm so frustrated and sorry I sold my old Macbook Pro.

Hi, i have recently developed a standalone Flash entertainment system, containing Flash games and screensavers etc., i have also included a third party mp3 player.
The problem i have is the PC is left switched on daily and the system is used quite heavily, i.e mp3's playing in background while screen savers are displayed and games are played.
Everything starts fine but after a few hours the flash animations slow down to about 2 or 3 frames per second, then the PC will finally crash.
    What may be causing this?

Flash isn`t exactly a Pro when it comes to garbage collection. So a running application will constantly feed on your systems memory (it always goes up, never down). Best way to avoid these problems is, to make a task that every 2-3 hours closes tha application and restarts it. There is really nothing you can do about it codewise.

  • [SOLVED] Slow desktop animation Gnome 3

This only happens with my nvidia gtx 460 with nvidia drivers. My laptop with open source intel works fine. The problem is that when I go to the activities with my notification area (bottom right) populated then the frames per second is horribly slow. When the notification area is empty then it works fine. Since the activities is pivotal to using gnome 3 it is the only thing stopping me from liking it and drives me crazy. I suspect it might be a problem with the way gnome works. Anyone have suggestions?

  • Slow Lion Time Machine- 465,335 days remaining...

I have the early 2011 15 macbook pro.  I am trying to do a time machine backup to a firewire connected drive.  First timemachine backup on this empty drive.  Lion logs everything out and the backup fails if I leave for more than 20 minutes.  For the second time, backup failed because of not being able to index a file in the developer applications.  Earlier the backup of 400 GB across a firewire 400 was slated for 5 hours.  After the failure and restart it was slated for three days... erased the external and started again - but then another backup error at indexing.
Now a fourth attempt this one will be finished in 465,335 days.
I don't think this is funny.  If Steve Jobs was still around I don't think he would sit back and let this happen.  Looks like I won't be waitng for 1,273 years after all - another file indexing failed, on the iphone simulator software.
After many years of boosting mac to my friends, I am saddly going to have to start looking for alternatives.  I expect more for the price I paid.

Hey Marlin, yes you are correct, it was not a question (I unchecked the "is this a question" checkbox)
Partly this is my method of documenting my (unfortunately many) issues with my 2011 15" macbook pro, and I think this is a better venue than shouting frustrations at the sky.
The external hard drive is a iomega 500Gb with room to spare, formated as Mac OS extended.  Disk utility finds no problems before running time machine.  After a failed time machine there were errors found, and I reformated and tried again.
The most frustrating thing is that the mac logs me out of the computer if I leave it alone while doing a time machine backup, causeing it to stop the back up!  I have turned off the automatic log out in settings, but it still logs me out.  This happens every time on a first time time machine backup.
Also really cool is the screen I see when I wake the computer - I call it the 'scratch away' screen, since moving the mouse 'scratches' away either black or a desktop.  Ill see if I can attach a screenshot for you.
<hmmm cant seem to attach a 1.8 Mb foto taken with my iphone... click insert imager and nothing>
I will also include my console errors incase that helps.  I have noticed the indexing fails on different files each time.
