Slow MacBook Pro with frame lag issues

Hi,
When I switched on my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) today it was very, very slow booting and very slow in OSX (Mounatin Lion, 10.8.4)
The activity monitor showed that the CPU-usage constantly was around 50% for a couple of minutes but then went down to 1 - 10 and I couldn't see any specific app that ate all the CPU-usage. Same thing with the disk activity. The memory used 2 GB after boot.
However, after the CPU-usage, the disk activity and the memory "cooled off" the computer was still slow and laggy. With laggy I mean that I had frame lag issues playing videos from internet or DVDs or when I used the mission control or scrolled down a website. Kind of like when drivers for a graphic card aren't installed on a PC.
I can't remember I did anything out of the ordinary before this happened, except installing a few apps that I've now removed.
I've run the Apple Hardwaretest, repaired the file system with both Disk Utility and fsck and I've also checked these: http://osxdaily.com/2012/10/11/mac-running-slow-reasons/
I'm thinking about buying an SSD disk (already have 8 GB memory) or wipe everything clean and install fresh. You think that would help? I'd rather see another solution to this problem because the computer has worked flawlessly before all this happened.
Best regards
/Axel

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
{ sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
{ launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
Step 4
ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal.

  • Configure New TM on a New Macbook pro with retina display Issue

I have bought a new New Macbook pro with retina display laptop (Lion moutain OS)and a new TM (2TB).
I have an internet router with wireless connect.
I plugged TM to the router with an ethernet cable.
Connect my TM to my macbook with an ethernet cable.(at this point I still cannot see TM on my Mac)
then I choose Time capsule from WiFi as shown below:
Then the airport utility (version 6.1) opened and start configuring TM but it gives an expected error when it is starting to join the TM!!!!
I have reset the TM several time but with no hope.
PS: I can configure the same TM on a normal laptop with windows 7 installed and Airport utility 5.6
I am struggling on this issue for weeks and I cannot yous TM on my macbook pro.
    Help please.

Time Capsule .. TC is the hardware box you bought.. Time Machine is the software you use in the Mac computer.. so what you generally refer to as TM is really TC.. !!
I can configure the same TM on a normal laptop with windows 7 installed and Airport utility 5.6
That is great.. you do not need to setup the Time Capsule at all then. It is already setup.. forget using 6.1 utility.. it is useless toy version.
Just use it.. open Time Machine and see if you can connect to the TC drive to do backup.. and to the wireless.
    From your statements..
Connect my TM to my macbook with an ethernet cable.(at this point I still cannot see TM on my Mac)
You are trying to connect with both wireless and ethernet at once.. This can mess things up. choose wireless or ethernet.. not both.
If you keep running into issues.. reset the TC.. I know yet again.
Set it up using SMB names.. for both the TC itself and wireless.
Then lock the wireless channel for 2.4ghz.. use channel 1, 6, or 11 (13 in europe) and see how it goes.

  • New 15" Macbook Pro with periodic charging issues

    Hola a todos,
I've had my Macbook Pro (2011, 15", 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, still running Snow Leopard, blahblahblah) for two months now, and it's been having charging problems on and off since its first day out of the box. Basically, when it happens, it will be plugged in and the battery display will cycle from "Not Charging" to "Calculating" to showing charging times like "30:00." It also cycles between green and amber lights when this is happening. Even when it's showing these supposed 20+ hour charging times, it doesn't charge at all. It also tends to run really hot when this is happening, even with minimal usage (i.e., the CPU sometimes gets as high as 90°C with leisurely web browsing when this happens, and the fan runs like the computer is trying to take off from a helipad).
Updates, SMC and PRAM resets, and the like don't help. And it's definitely a computer issue - when it does this, it continues to do it no matter what power adapter I plug it into or what wall outlet I'm using.  However, calibrating the battery usually will keep it from doing this for a couple of charge cycles, which is why I briefly thought this wasn't an issue, but it keeps returning - and I can't run a full calibration cycle every time I need to use my computer, since sometimes I need to use my computer continuously without letting it die... and calibrating every 48 hours shouldn't be necessary with a new computer. Sometimes it stops on its own (without calibration) for a while and starts charging normally
What is going on? Is this the battery? The MagSafe board? Something else? Has anyone else experienced this? I'm sure I can get it fixed, especially since I have AppleCare, but I'm hoping I'm not going to have to leave my computer for someone for an extended period to have this fixed, since I can't function without it for school/work... blehhh.
Thanks so much if you have any wisdom to impart about this weirdness.

That's definitely the plan whenever I finally have time to do that, but in the meantime I'm just curious if anyone has had this problem or if anyone knows what might be wrong (and how much trouble and time it might take to get it fixed). It also doesn't seem to be getting worse, but I guess I need to know if it's the sign of something that could get worse so that I don't put the repairs off too long. I am usually pretty capable of diagnosing my own computer problems, if not fixing them, but this time I'm baffled.

  • 2008 MacBook Pro with wifi connectivity issues

    Hello all,
My MacBook Pro has stopped connecting to my wireless internet at my house. Works fine when connected to the Ethernet, but no luck with wireless. My iPad, iPhone, and wife's MacBook Pro have no issues picking up the signal. When I attempted the network diagnostics, the wifi will not turn on. The button that enables you to TURN ON WIFI does not respond. I made a trip to the local apple store where they reset the wireless and it worked fine in the store. Took it home and same problem still existed.   Diagnostic report at the apple store showed no problems with wireless card.
Any thoughts, comments, or wisdom would be appreciated!

Apple released a firmware update for your MBP model to enable it to charge properly with the new-style adapters, after failures to do so were widely reported. Here's an article about the problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3499
And here's a link to the update:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1311
As with all firmware updates, it's essential to follow the installation instructions to the letter.

  • Slow Macbook Pro with frequent spinning rainbow wheel!

My Macbook Pro suddenly is very slow especially when using Google Chrome. I usually get the spinning rainbow wheel for most tasks and on chrome it often says "waiting on cache" or "waiting on app cache". I don't think it's just chrome because I have had problems with other applications as well. I've tried repairing disk permissions multiple times as well as deleting browsing history and nothing has solved the problem so far. I had a similar problem earlier in the year when I had to go to a store to get theBRACKET,HDD,FRONT,WITHIR/SLEEP/HDCABLE fixed. Any tips or suggestions would help! Don't really want to have to go back to a store to get this fixed again. etrecheck is below

  • 17" MacBook Pro with external monitor issues under 10.6.4

I have a 17" MacBook Pro 2.4ghz "connected" to a 23" Apple cinema display. For years now I've been able to just connect and wake from sleep with the MBP closed and start working. Ever since I've upgraded to 10.6.4 I have had problems getting my external monitor to switch on. I've had them both in the my local service centre and had them tested and they're both working fine individually. I though it may have been a power supply or Nvidia problem but they're fine. I can't get my monitor to wake either with the MBP closed or open. The sleep light will be lit but there is nothing on the monitor. I've zapped the PRAM, reset the SMC, run DiskWarrior and repaired permissions. Nothing works. I've even followed Apples guide to using them together under clam mode. Still no joy. So for now I'm stuck without being able to use my monitor which has been tested and is functioning properly. I'm wondering if anyone else has the same issues.

that works, although the laptop isn't really close enough to my other monitor for that to make sense. I'd still like to know why it's acting this way.................... thanks for the feedback, though

  • Slow Macbook Pro with OS X Yosemite

Hello. I have upgraded from OS X Mavericks to OS X Yosemite recently. My MacBook Pro seems to be working more slowly. Anyone experiencing this problem?Sl

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Retina Macbook Pro with Safari display issues

Is anyone having crazy display issues with Safari on their rMBP? I'm noticing some wierd glitching going on. For instance, as I type this, it doesn't show the correct characters consistently. Sometimes when I'm in Gmail, entire portions of the interface are missing unless I move the cursor over them. Some pages don't load at all and I have to refresh. Other times I'll load a page, click a link, and then hit back to go to the previous page and it's empty.
I'm not experiencing this in third party applications like MS Office, or Chrome, or other parts of Mountain Lion (though I do suffer from the same jerky UI transitions that everyone else has, but that's a different story). Anyone else in my boat? Suggestions?

Nevermind, looks like other people have the same issues: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4145775?start=0&tstart=0
Looks like the "geniuses" have been sleeping on the job. Step up your game, Apple.

I am using an early 2008 MacBook Pro and am having issues with it deleting text on its own (in word, emails, etc.). As I am typing it all of a sudden starts deleting and I can't stop it. This happened once before and it was due to a buldging battery pressing on the track pad. I checked the battery and it appears to be fine. What can I do?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • HT1338 I updated my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion and now it is starting slow and opening with some of the programs. How can I fix the problem?

I updated my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion and now it is slow in starting up and loads a number of probrams. How can I fix the problem?

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the slowness still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.
    Reboot normally and test.

I know many have this issue but i can't find a solution to the problem. i get message saying insuffisiant disk space in the volume iPhoto library and i have plenty of space available. i have the new macbook pro with retina display. i have never seen this message before and i have 2 other macbooks and have had many other also. i am assuming this is a problem with the new macbook retina. does anyone know the exact fix to this issue? i have seen many sugestions to try to fix this issue but none have solved the issue for anyone that i can find in the Apple Support Community. thank for looking into this in advance.
    ******A true apple fan********

Actually your suggestions are the ones that i have tried. i have seen that you have tried to help others with this issue and the only one that i could find that said they found the problem said that it was an ilife update issue and it fixed it and i have no available updates. i know it has to do with something in photo stream because it happens when i create a new library and it is loading the photos but i get the message before i reach the maximum 1000 photos. so i've tried updating, new library(first backing up photos and then deleting them from iPhoto), reinstalling OSX many times, running disc utilities. I called Apple the first day i had this issue and i was the first person to call them for support with the retina display and i actually had it escalated to a senior advisor and we thought we fixed the problem but we did not. i am pretty fluent in dealing with troubleshooting these type of issues and this is the first time i'm reaching out to the community. i figured now that the retina has been out some time now that there would be an obvious answer to this issue. thanks for the quick reply.

  • Flash SDK and MacBook Pro with Retina display major issues

    Hello,
Apple has recently released Macbook Pro's with Retina displays.
I have tested my Flash application on the new laptop, and this is what I observe:
My Flex SDK Flash application looks blurry and strange when I try to check it out from any Macbook Pro with Retina display, while looking sharp and OK from all other machines.
On this screenshot you can sort of see the issue:

(Expand the image to the actual size, and compare the Flex SDK components with browser labels. Browser labels look crisp, Flex SDK components look a little bit blurry.)
    Please fix this issue.
    Andrey

Sure. LR 4.3 even specifically adds Retina support...
