Slow predictive typing in Address Book

When I type a name in the search window of Address Book, the letters are very slow to appear and the find is delayed; however, if a name is pasted in the find is very fast.
When left deleting letters in a name the deletion slows down, especially when approaching the first two or three letters, but when the whole name is selected and deleted there is no delay.
This seems to be problem with predictive typing, if so, does anyone have an idea about how it might be cured?

I'd start by doing a shift-login; i.e., hold down the shift key just after you enter your login password and keep holding it until the desktop appears. That prevents your login items from loading.
Then try moving your AB database in
Library/Application Support/AddressBook
out of the way and creating a new one. If that isn't it, try the preference files,
Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
Then there are various cache files you can delete.

  • Cursor moving unexpectedly while typing in Address Book...

    I recently upgraded to Lion.  I'm also now using MobileMe.
    The new Address Book is a huge step backwards.  Now I have to click back and forth between its cutesy pages to change groups.  Thanks!
    But my problem is that while I'm typing in the "Notes" section in a Contact, the cursor often moves, unexpectedly and for no reason, to the beginning of the notes section.  So when I get done typing, I find that the text I enter is all over the place.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Is there a solution?
    I'm entering the information on my iMac using Address Book (not in iCloud via a browser).

    Same cursor problem here, on a MacBook Air running Yosemite. Any help would be appreciated

  • Keys not typing in address book

    I was adding some numbers to my address book in my new Pearl and the numbers won't type. It worked the first time I did it but when I went back to add more, it won't work. I can type names and email addresses, but no phone numbers. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix it?? I've tried holding the alt key and still nothing happens.
    Thanks!

  • Slow access to address book functions due to shared address books

    We have recently migrated from GW v8.0.3 on NetWare 6.5 to GW 2012.2 on
    SLES 11.3. Single PO system, with only 65 users.
    We have been experiencing 10 second hangs/delays the first time any GW
    address book functions are accessed. Some users are on the GW 2012.0.2
    client, others are still on the GW 8.0.3 client, all experiencing the 10
    second delay issue. We did not experience this before the migration to
    GW 2012.
    Testing indicates that the issue is due to shared address books.
    The 10 second delay always occurs the *first* time we access an address
    book function after starting the GroupWise client. For example, once
    the GroupWise client is newly started, if I open the address book, it
    takes 10 seconds to open. If I then create a new mail or appointment,
    while adding recipients to an e-mail, selecting a new addressbook from
    the address selector drop-down menu takes almost 10 seconds for the
    drop-down menu to respond to first being clicked on.
    Once I've accessed an address book function, though, accessing that
    function is much quicker on successive uses. But it does take doing
    each of those things once (suffering through the 10 hang) before they
    speed up. If a user makes the mistake of closing GroupWise, I'm back to
    square one with the first use of each of those address book functions
    being slow again.
    *BUT*, if I delete all address books that have been shared with me,
    there is no 10 second delay, even after restarting the GroupWise client.
    No slow access to any address book feature on first use.
    Unfortunately, we use shared address books very heavily, so deleting
    them for all of my users is not a solution.
    Besides running PO/user maintenance, I've looked at possible
    communications or DNS issues with no luck.
    Any ideas what's going on or how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    -Greg

    We have been dealing with this same if not similar sounding issue, opened a SR, and engineering is looking into it. For us it also impacts message compose ( address completeion ) as well as opening mail. We have yet to identify a workaround. What we see is "roughly" a 3 second delay per shared address book, occuring intermittently after a period of the client being idle. We also see on the POA that periodically the client will login to these shared accounts, but instead of those logins happening quickly ( sub 1 second for all of them combined ).
    This is not a constant problem for all users with the 2012 client, and seems to run in fits for a given user. We see it, perhaps 1 -3 times a day for a given user.
    If you enable Verbose logging on the POA ( via the HTTP console ) and look for the IP address of the workstation with the problems, you should see a pattern of logins as follows:
    Code:
    1204poa.028:18:41:32 F059 C/S Login Windows ::GW Id=Kxxxxr :: 192.168.1.110
    1204poa.028:18:41:35 F059 C/S Login Windows ::GW Id=Sxxxxk :: 192.168.1.110
    1204poa.028:18:41:38 F059 C/S Login Windows ::GW Id=Exxxxr :: 192.168.1.110
    1204poa.028:18:41:41 F061 C/S Login Windows ::GW Id=Sxxxxk :: 192.168.1.110
    1204poa.028:18:41:44 F051 C/S Login Windows ::GW Id=Kxxxxr :: 192.168.1.110
    1204poa.028:18:41:47 F061 C/S Login Windows ::GW Id=Dxxxxr :: 192.168.1.110
    1204poa.028:18:41:50 F061 C/S Login Windows ::GW Id=Kxxxxr :: 192.168.1.110
    ( Using something like grep -i "GW Id" 1204poa.??? | grep -i "Login Windows" | grep x.x.x.x <== IP of the workstation when in /var/log/no*/gr*/POA_Log_Folder )
    Note the 3 second delay between each of the shared account logins. This typifies the problem we are seeing. Under normal circumstances you would see these all happening with the same time stamp. Perhaps you can confirm this is the same looking issue.
    I'll keep you apprised of our progress.

  • Search field does not work in Address Book

    Text typed into Address Book's search field just sits there. No hits, no response whatsoever.
    It used to work . . .
    Spotlight itself seems fine. It locates contacts in Address Book.
    I've rebuilt the Spotlight index.

    Same issue....for a couple of months now....starting to see enough of us that it is an issue. I've deleted plists, etc, etc. Anybody have any ideas? I have 1000+ names in my address book....

  • Address book predictive typing is...um..."slow"?

    Is there a way to edit the addresses that Mail has memorized, and possibly delete or at least re-prioritize them? Example: There are several people named "Phil" in my address book, and probably the last 30 times I've typed it I meant my father. But every single time the default suggestion is a former colleague of mine from a job 3 years ago.
    Does Mail make any attempt to guess the most likely match? How does it decide which one to suggest? Can I tell it to do something different?

    you can delete obsolete emails from the previous recipients list. it's available in mail from window menu->previous recipients. but that will only get rid of emails that are not in your address book. there is nothing you can do to tell Mail to offer one email before another one.

  • Address book-predictive typing?

    The old address book versions would predict the entries; city or state or names. The OS 10 version doesn't seem to do a whole lot. Am I missing some preference settings?

    Actually, Address Book has an interesting bug. In the Edit it mode, deleted lines will reappear if clicking to different app. All the previous editing is lost and must be redone.
    Not a lot of effort was put into this system app.

  • Is there a way to send an e-mail to everyone in my address book WITHOUT typing/selecting each address in individually?

    My old e-mail address is going to be discontinued and I need to notify everyone in my Mozilla Thunderbird address book. Is there a way to send an e-mail to everyone in my address book WITHOUT typing/selecting each address in individually?

    Bonjour zmerill
    Yes it is possible and simple to do.
    - In the compose window of TB, display the address books on the left
    - select the adress book you want
    - select normally the first contact (left click)
    - while pressing a shift key, select the last contact (--> all selected)
    - just under the last contact, use the button you want.
    In an address book it is also possible to create a mailing list.

  • Address Book Sync running slow parallels and mac (iCloud)

    Briefly, every time that "address book sync" becomes active on the Mac side, the computer on both the Mac and the Windows side becomes incredibly slow, almost usable. If I disable the "address book sync" through the activity monitor (force quit), the computer on both the Mac and Windows side restores to normal speed. I have 4 CPU's on this MAc book pro and i have configured parallels to 2 for the Mac side and 2 for the Windows side. I have also allocated 2GB of memory to the Windows 7 side which is within the recommended range of 512MB to 4GB (Maximum memory is 16BG).
    I have also noticed in "activity monitor" that the process name "prl_vm_app" can run as high as 200% of cpu usage and vary anywhere from its current level whilst writing this email of 5% upwards. This does not however seem to affect the speed of the computer and again this is being caused by "address book sync". For information I am running Outlook on the windows side and using "contacts" and this is also being replicated on the mac side in "contacts". Whenever I update or enter a new contact in the windows side (Contacts in outlook) then address book sync starts shortly after on the Mac side and the computer slows considerably.
    I have iCloud working on the mac side and windows side syncing my contacts calendar etc.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    I have the same problem too. My iphone is not syncing with my addressbook on the mac, no matter what I try, it is very very frustrating!!

    There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox.

  • Why is the Address Book app slow to update my contacts?

    When I try to import my Google contacts into my Mac Address Book via vCard (.vcf) format, Address Book app takes an eternity to finish updating (like a half hour or more), during which I cannot do anything else in the Address Book.
    The last time I tried to do so, yesterday, my entire system became extremely slow and I had to restart the computer. BTW, I use Mac OS X v. 10.7.5 (Lion).
    I also notice that searching for contacts within the Address Book is an extremely slow process. I begin to type a name and the program is very sluggish to respond or display anything, forcing me to type very slowly.
    What can I do to resolve these issues so I can update and search for my contacts in the Address Book within reasonable amounts of time?

    you have a 4G iPod. As Apple said in June, iOS 7 is not compatible with the 4G iPod.
    All the iOS devices compatible (iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, and 5G iPod touch) with iOS 7 have at least 512 MB of memory (RAM). The 4G iPod only has 256 MB

  • Address book applescripting - slows computer via memory drain

    Hi,
    i've just got my new gleaming macbook pro - a return to mac after ~16 years. whew.
    I was a heavy user of categories and contacts in outlook - had two contact folders, A and B, with categories in each. Additionally for some categories there is a third field - location. In total there are 2500 contacts I deal with.
    To import my contacts was not trivial - i used little creatures O2M to bring over my messages, which worked well, but didn't give as great a result on contacts (lost a lot of fields). Then I used Abee on a csv file and found it was great - well worth the $10.
    I mapped my custom fields to related names custom fields.
    After a lot of reading i think that the best location for user defined fields (in my case group, category, and location) is as a custom named URL. This allows me to make Smart groups in address book to sort through these categories.
    So I wrote some applescript to move info from related names to URL fields. It steps through everyone in my address book and if the label "Group" exists in related names and the value is "B" then add a new URL and delete the related name label.
    The script is:
    tell application "Address Book"
    try
    repeat with this_person in every person
    set namestoremove to {}
    repeat with this_label in (get related name of this_person)
    if the label of this_label = "Group" and the value of this_label = "B" then
    make new url at end of urls of this_person with properties {label:"Group", value:"GroupB"}
    --properties of this_label
    set namestoremove to namestoremove & (id of this_label)
    --delete (related names of this_person whose id is id of this_label)
    end if
    end repeat
    repeat with name_id in namestoremove
    delete (related names of this_person whose id is name_id)
    end repeat
    save
    end repeat
    save
    end try
    end tell
    I have to acknowledge Trevor Harmon scripts for giving guidelines.
    I had to add the get statements to resolve properly the related names of the person
    The script works well on a small address book, but on the full book it slows to a crawl and stops.
    Of course I could re-import using abee - but that wont help me learn about address book scripts.
    Anyone see any problems that would cause the script to slow to a crawl? I assume its somehow consuming memory....

    Hello
    Accessing item in large list can be very slow in AppleScript unless appropriate coding method is used. Also the 'whose' filter can be very slow in filtering large collection of objects (though I doubt it is the case here).
    Anyway, you may try something like the script below which avoids the 'whose' filter.
    (NOT tested, for my environment is too for this.)
    --SCRIPT 1
    tell application "Address Book"
    repeat with p in (get every person)
    set p to p's contents -- # dereference the list item reference [1]
    tell p
    repeat with r in (get its related names)
    set r to r's contents -- # derefenence the list item reference [1]
    if r's label = "Group" and r's value = "B" then
    make new url at end of urls with properties {label:"Group", value:"GroupB"}
    delete r
    --delete related name id (get r's id) -- # alternative to the above [2]
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell
    --save addressbook
    end repeat
    save addressbook
    end tell
    [1] Dereferening the list item reference is costly operation in AppleScript.
    So dereferece it once (especially if it is used more than once in the iteration).
    [2] Use 'by ID' reference form if the 'delete r' does not work properly.
    (E.g., if r is in 'by index' reference form and there're multiple related names,
    'delete r' won't work properly due to changing index.)
    --END OF SCRIPT 1
    Or the following one which, in addition, implements a fast method to process large list.
    --SCRIPT 1a
    main()
    on main()
    script o
    property pp : {} -- # define large list as script object's property
    property rr : {} -- # idem
    tell application "Address Book"
    set pp to get every person
    repeat with p in my pp -- # use refenence to script object's property (i.e. my pp)
    set p to p's contents -- # dereference the list item reference [1]
    tell p
    set rr to get its related names
    repeat with r in my rr -- # use refenence to script object's property (i.e. my rr)
    set r to r's contents -- # dereference the list item reference [1]
    if r's label = "Group" and r's value = "B" then
    make new url at end of urls with properties {label:"Group", value:"GroupB"}
    delete r
    --delete related name id (get r's id) -- # alternative to the above [2]
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell
    --save addressbook
    end repeat
    save addressbook
    end tell
    end script
    tell o to run
    end main
    [1] Dereferening the list item reference is costly operation in AppleScript.
    So dereferece it once (especially if it is used more than once in the iteration).
    [2] Use 'by ID' reference form if the 'delete r' does not work properly.
    (E.g., if r is in 'by index' reference form and there're multiple related names,
    'delete r' won't work properly due to changing index.)
    --END OF SCRIPT 1a
    Hope this may help,
    H

  • Why is Address Book so slow under Lion?

    I changed to Lion as soon as it came out, & many of the intial problems have been resolved since. But I find that Address Book has become & remains a very clunky thing, extremely slow in terms of its search function. Anybody else notice this or have a solution?
    Am using a MacBookPro running 10.7.3
    thanks, Pierre

    I followed your suggestion on speeding up address book and deleted all contacts and imported them again from the archive however they only appear briefly before dissapearing. I assume that iCloud is deleting them.
    I have also tried restoring from timemachine but get "Address book cant be modified or deleted because it's required by Mac OSX"
    Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

    Address Book has been mixing up addresses. Many contacts have phone numbers and email addresses from other contacts. It's also become very, very slow. For example, making any change brings on about 30 to 60 seconds of the spinning ball.
