Slow webpage loading (using dsl connection)

Hi, I've been having some huge slowdowns upon browsing the web (just loading google takes some time, sites does not load at normal speed, browsing is not that usable 100%). I've confirmed this that it only occurs on Arch because when I try browsing on my XP the above problems doesn't occur at all...I'm not using a networkmanager atm, I just do a
#dhcpcd "interface"
.  Could this problem ISP related? I have no idea why this is happening...Also, downloading packages via powerpill or pacman shows correct dl speeds...I'm using kdemod 4.2 and tested my browsing on both my netbook and desktop with browser's Firefox,Opera,Konqueror...:( I will supply more info if it will be needed...

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by dhcpcd "interface", but the correct way to do DHCP in Arch is in the file /etc/rc.conf  You only need to edit a couple of lines and then DHCP should be working on boot.  By default, there is a line that reads:
eth0="eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
You need to edit this line so it reads:
eth0="dhcp" # eth0 is whatever interface you are using
INTERFACES=(eth0) # again, replace eth0 with the interface you are using
and
ROUTES=(gateway)
should be
ROUTES=(!gateway)
The default settings tell the network manager to use a static IP as well as a static gateway, which is not what you want if you are getting DHCP from your router.

  • Slow webpage loading on all browsers

    Hi,
    I have the problem that webpages tend to load extremely slow on all browsers under the latest Mountain Lion on a Macbook Pro Retina Mid 2012. I say tend, because sometimes pages load instantly, but very often it takes minutes to open or a page loads only partially. So there is some random element of surprise mixed in. The problem exists on all browsers I have on my system. It does not on my Windows laptop. I have tried anything I could find on the web that is even remotely related to this issue. I will just list, what I have tried so far:
    1) I have deleted my wireless connection under network preferences and setup a new one.
    2) I have tested other DNS servers, Google's amongst then (8.8.8.8).
    3) I have deactivated DNS prefetching on Safari.
    4) I have tested Chrome and Internet Explorer (via VMware Fusion).
    5) I have done several speed tests with two ISPs.
    6) I have tested the disk permission verification and repair tip.
    7) I have tested a different wireless router as well as different wireless standards (g vs n).
    8) I ran a traceroute which turned out fine.
    9) I have tested several FTP severs. The problem seems to be isolated to HTTP browsing.
    Can't think of anything else I have tested, but that should cover most of it. I do not want to setup a new system and postpone the issue. I want to find the cause of this.
    Maybe anyone can help we resolve this issue.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login. 
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
    When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
    If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
    *Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Extreme slow down when using wireless connection

    I did not have a wireless network prior to purchasing the airport express and needed this as I purchased a macbook. My intention was only to use this device as a wireless network. I have my cable modem connected to a linksys router which is connected to the airport express. The internet connection on my macbook is extremely SLOW! I have reset and reinstalled my airport several times, called apple support and trouble shoot for over an hour, however still experiencing the same problems...slow internet connection. In my troubleshooting I have determined that cable modem and connection, router and airport are all working properly. So the only other thing is interference issue. I've tried changing the channels, use interference robustness option however still no results. I just want my laptop internet connection to work fast. This is my last hope otherwise I'm going out tomorrow to buy a wireless Linsys N router. Any suggestions????

    Well it turned out to be a DNS configuration problem on the MacBook. If you go to Networks-Advanced in the System Preferences for the Airport connection, then select the DNS TAB. In there I had a spurious DNS entry. I deleted the one that was manually entered in (it's in black text) that way the one I received from the Airport Express was the only one in there (it is greyed out and you can't delete it.)

  • IMac, sudden extremely slow webpage loading problem

    Hi guys,
       I had this problem all of a sudden, not sure whether it was caused by malware, my own python scripts or the 10.8.2 update. However all the other devices in my wifi network work just fine. And also my iMac is not disconnected from the internet, ping "www.google.com" is fine, and other IM apps are working properly too.
       I tried different browswers (chrome, firefox, safari) since then, and all the other suggested solutions (resetting DNS, using static ip address, clear cache and etc.) None of them actually solved the problem.
      My friend told me to reinstall a clean OS X, which could be a huge pain for me.
      However, I accidently found out some softlinks and permissions are messed up in my superuser directories. So I did a "repair disk permission" , now the browsers are back on the horse. That actually makes sense to me.
      Long story short, verify/repair disk permissions (in Utilities/disk utility) might solve your browser page loading problem! I just wanna to share with you guys if you are struggling on the same issue as I was.

  • Webpage loading is very slow with parental controls enabled

    Hello, 
    My kids were complaining about slow webpage loading (~2 min page) and how they can't do their homework.  I am running Lion (10.7.2) and using latest safari (or firefox)  on a new imac. (4GB).  After a few hours of searching and reading I created two new accounts, one with and one without minimal parental control enabled.  Sure enough, easily recreated the problem, so it is nothing(?) that my kids did to their accounts.  I have tried toggling the parental controls back to no internet site restrictions without changing the browser response.  Thanks for any help.

  • DSL Connection Very slow ONLY when using wireless router

    My DSL connection was running super slow (approx 136 Kbs) - I disconnected the Linksys wireless router and plugged by DSL modem directly into the computer.  Then my internet speed increased to 1.4 Mbs (a 10 fold increase).
    Any suggestions on how / why my speed drops so extensively when using the Linksys wireless routher (wrt45g).

    Are you using the same test each time to measure the speed?
    The reason I ask is that Windows usually reports its download speed in KB/sec (Kilobytes per second).  But most web (internet) speed tests report their speed in Mbps (Megabits per second.)
    A 1.4 Mbps line will typically pass data at about 140KB/sec.
    To help determine what kind of problem you are having, do the same speed test in 3 different ways:
    1)  Connect one computer, by wire, directly to your modem
    2)  Connect one computer, by wire, directly to your router  (all other computers and network devices should be off).
    3)  Connect one computer, wirelessly, to your router  (all other computers and network devices should be off).
    Report back your results, and also, please state what line speed you are paying for.  Once we have this, we will hopefully be able to help you. 

  • Slow page loads, dropped connection

    Hi,
    Looking for some advice here. I write for the web for a living, and spend most of my day online. I'm not happy with the speed of my connection right now, and am considering upgrading to a faster package. I'm currently on the 768k to 1.5Mbps DSL package.
    The problem is, I don't get anywhere near the speed I'm paying for now. Page load times go from speedy to drop dead slow (20-30 secs), and often hang. I'm not sure what's going on, although I can say my mother has the same problems at her house (next town over, same DSL package). I can't see paying for a "faster" package when I don't even get the speed I should be now.

    Has the line been performing any better since the last post? If not, find a time where it is working poorly and register an account over at DSLReports.com if you don't already have one. Fron there, visit their Tools section of their site and perform the Line Quality/Ping test. Be sure that before you start the test, your router/modem is not blocking Pings since this will result in the test having less data. Also, ensure nothing is using your connection before and during the time of the test being ran. Post up the results of the test once it has been completed.

  • Slow first loading of webpages

    I have a problem which I am trying to combat with, but I no longer manage to.
    Archlinux. Firefox (in Opera the same, in Chromium better, but according to what I've read, it has additional cache, or something like this - anyway, it gets this problem somehow round).
    I am opening a webpage, let's say bbs.archlinux.org, for the first time after a longer break. That means, I was surfing through different websites, portals, etc. and I want to enter this forum. It refers, of course, to all the domains. Wikipedia, Google, whatever - doesn't matter.
    What happens? The webpage is loading terribly slow. It can take a half of a minute to open it. Then, after I enter a server, the next subpages open quite normally. The problem is with getting into for the first time.
    I have a few other computers at home - with Windows - connected to the same gateway (Linksys WAG54G2, ones connected via wifi go additionaly through Linksys WRT54GC, which works only as an AP, the DHCP server is turned off in it and NAT is got round by connecting the other Linksys via not WAN but LAN port - anyway, it doesn't matter here). And everything works right there. The webpages load at once, there are some issues with YouTube, but it's understandable with my ISP (Polish Telecom), which is saving money on international links and is pushing all the international traffic through a crowded router in Frankfurt.
    Following sugestions from the web, i turned off IPv6 at all - by means of kernel parameters in the bootloader - but it doesn't help.
    Proxy is, of course, turned off.
    This doesn't seem to be an issue with DNS, because for example I have Wikipedia put into /etc/hosts and it's also loading that slow.

    Basically, it looks as if the query to DNS servers about IP took too much time, but, as for me, nothing confirms this. Moreover, the other PCs use the same DNS addresses and it's OK there.
    Any ideas, suggestions, what can be wrong?

    I tried Ubuntu 10.10 live CD on 2 PCs - mine and another one (where normally Windows 8.1 is used and there is no such problems on it), connected to the same local network via Ethernet cables. Of a different length and connected to different ports of the switch built-in into my home "router" (as I've already mentioned - Linksys WAG54G2) - but I don't think it's possible that it really matters As for me - the only possible problem might be some issues with this Linksys.
    The situation on both PCs with this Ubuntu is exactly the same as with my Arch. It is strange taking into account that I am testing it on a very old Ubuntu version (from the times before I even started using Linux as the main OS ) and I haven't noticed these problems before.

    The moment when the webpage appeared in the browser window is 14:40:25.
    I've measured the time of opening the same webpage in the Windows I've mentioned and it's about 5 secs there. In Linuxes - a few tens of seconds (at my Arch - 25 secs until the images load totally). And it's more or less like this with all the possible webpages.

  • DSL connection gets slower than dial up at night

    For the last week my DSL connection has been getting really slow in the late afternoon and evening. It is fine in the morning. Also in the evening I have started getting error messages such as Request Timeout, The connection was reset while the page was loading, and Can't find DNS server. Verizon has tried to blame my laptop, but the same thing happens with my two desktops and my wife's desktop. Verizon has also tried to blame my Belkin router, which I took out of the equation by hooking the DSL modem directly to my laptop. The modem is a Westell 6100G.
    Could there be too much traffic through the CO in the afternoon and evening that is affecting my connection?

    NDT Test is not showing packet loss yet the line sounds like it's behaving like there is a ton of loss occurring. I'll see if I can get someone. It's hard to say how Verizon has things set up but if 1Mbps is the top speed in your area and the sync rate was set that low deliberately rather than by some sort of provisioning accident, I wonder if your DSLAM is fed by bonded T1 lines. Not too uncommon to find that still to this day where DSLAMs are not fed by Fiber especially in very rural areas.

  • Mac is slow to load webpages and PC is fast, Why?

    I have an iMac g5 with an airport card. The problem I have is that when I open up any web page it takes 3 to 4 times longer to load than my windows based laptop loading the same pages. I have a Microsoft wireless G router set up on my home PC. Now here is the very strange thing. When I connect to my neighbors unsecured network (with their permission) I notice that the webpages load much faster but still not as fast as my windows based laptops or home PC. has anyone had this problem before? Any idea of what I should do? I have thought about additional memory to help with some processing performance, but I know that cant be the solution.

    Joel, under system preferences, energy saver go to options and make sure your processor performance is set to highest. When I changed mine from automatic to highest things started moving a quite a bit faster. I found the following on an old Appleinsider forum:

    I just recently purchased a Macbook pro, however, its been slow to load webpages, youtube videos, etc.  The youtube videos frequently stop playing and I have to reload the page.  Its not the connection and I havent had the computer long enough to have to clear safari chache.  WHY

    Sorry to bump this, but I'm having the same issue, though it's not a poor router problem (upgraded that hoping it would fix it).
    I tried the OpenDNS and it helped once, then stopped loading Netflix (Netflix, Youtube, and Facebook seem to be common problems, as well as "new" webpages that I don't go to often). If I connect directly to my Ethernet the internet works great. My iPhone connected to WiFi works great. It's just my Macbook pro and it just recently happened when I moved to my new house (I had the same ISP at an apartment and had 0 issues). Any thoughts?

  • IMac G5 - 5 Meg DSL connection is slow to connect

    My IMac is slow to connect on my DSL. I have no router in line and have disabled the firewall. It's wierd I'll type in a site and I may have to refresh or just wait before I connect to a site. If I go and check my bandwidth it says speed greater than 4.5 meg... It's like once it start transmitting it screams but to connect it can take over a minute sometimes... Sprint came out to troubleshoot and the connection works fine on his PC laptop... I have also tried the connection on my IBook with the same problem. The IBook works fine at any other location. I'm thinking the Mac's don't like the DSL connection... Any Sugestions? Anyone?

    Without a router, at least you know that it is not a lossy router causing issues.
    It sounds like a DNS issue to me. My ISP has slow DNS servers and I found out on DSLReports.com that 4.2.2.x where "X" is any number from 1 to 6 give very good lookups. I put in those numbers and my page loads improved greatly.

    Contanct your ISP for support but keep in mind, if your Mac is running v10.5.8 as your profile suggests, that is a very outdated OS X and you may have issues loading graphics at this point.
    If you are using Safari, empty the Safari cache then quit and relaunch Safari and try loading an image.
    And make sure there's enough free space on the disk to load images.
    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then click Get Info.
    That will open the Get Info panel.
    Check Capacity and Available. Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.

    tries to connect to the database using the connection information embedded in
    the "reportFileName". This was only realised on checking the ODBC Trace
    Log. The connection itself is not a problem. The problem is that the embedded
    connection information is related to OLD production system. And failed
    connections had raised some concerns.
    Note: I am using
    SetDataSource to populate the data for the report. So I don't need the
    connection.
    Is there any way I
    can disable this auto-connect?
