Small & Beautiful but ergonomically flawed...

Hi there.
I just got my 2nd gen shuffle recently and was blown away for the first 30 hours when it was sitting down on my desk, getting recharged for the first time - this is my first 'apple' device btw.
However, I need to say that the face controls of the shuffle have a major ergonomic flaw which, I believe has been sacrificed (inadvertently maybe), for the sake of aesthetics or just to follow 'ipod' conventions.
I am talking about the signs used on the controls, of course. If you rotate the shuffle around, it is so uniformly designed (square-ish) that it is hard to tell whether it is upright or not.
Why is this important? Well simply because (incidentally), the signs used on the controls are almost all laterally symmetrical!! This means that if you put the shuffle upside-down, the forward key becomes the backways one, and vice-versa. The play and volume functionalities are pretty much error-free.
Why am I being picky? Well because with its small size and ability to be clipped onto your shirt/jacket (thus, easily inverted), controls should be un-ambiguous.
The forward/backward track signs are traditions we have kept from the days when music devices that tiny were never an issue. Today, while trying to stay user-friendly but at the same time greatly altering the nature of the devices, such ergonomic flaws crop up in even the best of devices...
I know that most will argue that the asymmetrical position of the button as well as other factors such as the stereo cable jack output should tell a user which way is up and down. But isn't the circular, slightly convex button surface designed exactly for the opposite goal - read: blind operation or the ability to operate the device without even looking at it and without thinking twice.
Well next time you skip to the next track and get the previous one, remember to remember this little heads-up.
Cheers to all!

I have thought this too. Perhaps some kind of "tactile" bumps would help. Eventually, I memorized the interface based on the earplug port...but if you are excerising with this, I would hesitate to touch that area of the shuffle too much due to sweat trapping issues.

I have a few hundred duplicates in my iPhoto library, but the file sizes are different.  So one is 1.3mb and one is 567kb.  I want to delete the smaller ones, but short of comparing each duplicate, is there a way to do this?  I've been looking at Duplicate Annhilator but I don't think it can do it.
    Thanks!

I just ran a test with iPhoto Library Manager, Duplicate Annihilator, iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner, Duplifinder and Photodedupo.  I imported a folder of 5 photos into a test library 3 times, allowing iPhoto to import duplicates.  I then ran the 5 photos thru resizer to reduce their jpeg compression but all other aspects of the file the same.
None of the duplicate removal apps found set that was reduced in the file resizer. That's probably due to the fact that the file creation date was being used as a criteria and the resized photo would have a different file creation date even though the Image Capture date was the same.
They all found the 3 regular duplicates and some of them would mark two and leave the 3rd unmarked.  iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner can sort the found duplicates by file size but if the file was edited to get the reduced file size it might not be found as it would have a different file creation/modification date.
iPhoto Library Manage was able to find all duplicates and mark them as such if the file names were the same the the filename option was selected.  Otherwise it also missed the modified, resized version.  It allowed one to select the one photo to save before going to work on the library.
So if a photo has been reduced in image quality or pixel size it will not be considered a duplicate.

Why Quicktime doesn't recognize my camcorder HVR-A1 on a smaller Macbook but does on the 17" one using 400 Firewire adapted to 800?

I'm baffled why the mic works fine with Dictation but not with QuickTime.
QT likely uses core routines which are compatible with your Lion OS and what can be seen in the "System Preferences" window. On the other hand, Dictation may be using an alternative workflow which can still see/use your mic. To add to the confusion, it appears Lion included changed audio handling routines which, according to some, were released before proper test had been completed and finalized with the release of Mountain Lion. (I.e., Snapz Pro X and WireTap from Ambrosia are still scrambling to update their system audio capture software for these changes but ScreenFlow's routines seem to work already.) In any case, I suspect your problem may be related to the Lion/Mountain Lion audio handling modifications but have no way to confirm such at this time.

When my brother send a video from his iPhone 4 Verizon) it come to me very small.  But when I send a video with my iPhone 4 (At&t) it comes out twice as large.  What is my brother doing wrong?

what do you mean exactly by small and large. because iphone won't let you email videos with large sizes, it lets you to email just a sample of the video. if that is the case.
on the other hand while sending pictures it will ask you if you want to use small, medium, large or the actual size for email purpose

  • Small issue but very annoying....

When using the dashbaord to access the calculator in Snow Leopard it would overlay it over the project i was working on. In Lion when accessing the calculator it takes me to a new screen. This is very annoying as i like to see what im working on while using the calculator at the same time. Now i have to swtich back and forth between screens.  I know in the grand scheme of things this is a small problem but its very annoying. Is there a way i can make the calcualtor work as it did in Snow Leopard?

  • Premiere CC exports the timeline in smaller segments, but export crashes on full sequence export. "Serious error has occurred"

I'm running a 2013 iMac i7 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096mb. 24Gb ram. Latest update of Premiere Pro CC.  My sequence is 23 minutes long, XDCAM EX. Most of my footage is Sony AVCHD.
When I attempt to export the entire sequence, it will go approx 75% and then stop, giving the error box: "A serious error has occurred and Premiere must shut down, we will attempt to save your project..."
This happens whether the sequence is entirely preview-rendered or not, and no matter the settings in the export window.  However, if I mark the sequence and export it in 2 pieces, both sides of the sequence will export.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Premiere, tried making new projects, imported the sequence, trashed the render files and media cache, trashed QT plugins, removed filters from clips... no solutions yet.
General response of Premiere seems to be generally slower than usual as well, and this problem has only recently started.  I haven't needed to export my project for a couple weeks, so I'm not sure when exactly it may have started.
Below is the error report, I hope someone is able to help me with this... thank you.

    Kevin-
If I split my sequence into 2, first using only a couple min with 4k footage and NO high res stills, it takes nearly 3 hours, seems to want to crash mid way through  again - but doesn't.
Then exporting the final 90 seconds of the sequence, with a couple small 4k clips and about 2000 high res stills (I left them at 6000 pixels) renders in about 40 min and doesn't hiccup whatsoever.
it does not seem to be related to the stills.
most 4k footage is mjpeg from Canon 1dc
This was on a second machine - a new Macbook pro i7- (if I try to render sequence all at once- same crash as on iMac)

  • I Want To Turn My B&W G3 Into A Server To Host A Small Website, But How?

Hi, I just got a B&W Power Mac G3, and I would like to turn it into a small server to host a small music website. I dont expect alot of traffic. So, I would imagine it could handle this. However, I don't know what I should do to get the G3 up and running the site? I'm doing this with very little money most of it being spent on the Power Mac. So, I need software that is cheap yet reliable. Friends have suggested a few apps but I want to know what you all suggest.
    Server Wishlist:
    1. Cheap or Free OS
    2. Lightweight on CPU
    3. GUI or very little command Line usage.
    4. Friendly to PC
    5. EASY Setup and Install
I asked this question earlier and it was "locked" with no explanation. So here I go again sorry if I posted incorrectly the first time.

The G3 should be more than sufficient for light web usage.
If at all possible, I'd want to use OS X. While it doesn't necessarily meet your first two criteria, it beats any other options in the rest of your requirements.
If that's not possible, you could try Darwin (http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/). The latest binary available (8.0) tracks OS X 10.4 and should install on a B&W. Download the binary, use Disk Utilities to make it a disk image and burn it to a CD. You should be able to boot the machine from that CD.
From there, I would install Webmin (http://www.webmin.com/osx.html), from which you can control the Apache web server that comes installed with Darwin. Webmin is also useful in controlling MySQL or Postgres (not installed) or BIND or Postfix (both installed). Webmin, like it sounds, starts up a secure, SSL web server (separate from Apache) and provides a set of CGI-driven web pages that allow you to control a variety of aspects of a UNIX machine without resorting to the command line. You will need a certain number of command line skills to install Webmin in the first place.
If you want to use the latest/greatest Apache or one of the open source databases, you should get DarwinPorts (http://www.darwinports.com/), which is similar to Webmin in the skills needed for installation. DarwinPorts provides you with a gateway to (relatively) easily download open source applications and install them. A similar environment, Fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net/), is also available.
If that all seems too complex, then your course of last resort -- to meet all your requirements -- would be to install Mac OS 8.1 (the last freely distributed classic OS) and download MacHTTP (http://www.machttp.org/). There are still plenty of sites served by MacHTTP and it was the first web server software I ever used, back in 1995 when I put my first site onto the net. Chuck Shotton is no longer actively developing MacHTTP, but he continues to maintain it. It's donationware -- even with your limited budget, send him a few bucks.
By comparison to OS X, OS 8.1 is extraordinarily light. Darwin too is light.
An alternative to using Classic 8.1 would be to spend about $25 and get a 9.2 installer disk on eBay. But then, for about $10 more, you could buy OS X 10.3 on eBay as well.
Which takes us back to my first point: I'd spend the $35 and run OS X if I could.
    Best of luck.

  • How can I force Firefox to open a new window (tab) a certain size. I need a smaller box but it always opens full screen.

I get tired of having to click on the upper right box every time I need the smaller window, which is VERY frequently. I teach college online and need to see only a portion of the large screen as the rest may distract me while grading. This COULD prove unfair to my students.

Don't know if this is the answer you want, but it gives you an idea of what you can do.
    * Using the window.open method<br>http://www.javascript-coder.com/window-popup/javascript-window-open.phtml
You can resize an existing window with a bookmarklet, but you would have to be able to initiate the bookmarklet from the window.
    * javascript:self.resizeTo(642,364);self.moveTo(0,0);
    * http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/kws.htm look for "resize -" in the k.html file listed.

firefox itself still runs without problems but he icon that displays on my desktop has changed to a blank peice of paper thing with small squares on it. i use windows 7

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Im unable to open my wireless mouse back to change the batteries. The little black button seems to be stuck - I've tried to pry it open using 2 small screwdrivers but to no avail. Will I need to buy a new mouse?ve tried to pry it ope

I am unable to open the back of my wirelss mouse to change the batteries which I've changed several times before. The black release button on the back does not seem to work. I've tried using a couple of small screwdrivers to pry it open but I don't want to break the plastic and therefore the mouse. Anyone have any other ideas or do I need to buy a new mouse?

You may have caused more damage with the screwdrivers.  It can be tricky as it works the opposite way to what you may first imagine.    Hold the mouse, bottom upwards, the black catch nearest to you.   Then flick the black catch towards you with your nail.   (Not away from you towards where a space is showing).

  • I Mac (intel based) with OSx 10.6.8, screen shows blur / hazy rectangular patch in the middle. It was small earlier but is growing in size now. How to get rid of it?

My iMac (intel based) all aluminum, OSx 10.6.8, 2.5 GHz Processor, bought about 6 months ago. It was working fine till now. Last few days a hazy blur patch appears in the center of the screen. It's growing with each passing day. How can I get rid of it? Pl help me to understand the problem and the right solutio.
    Thanks in advance.

Did you buy this from an individual, retail computer business or Apple reseller?
Do you have or did you get any type of warranty?
Before I make an assumption that there is something wrong with the LCD screen.
Both sides of the iMac's protective glass may just need cleaning.
The protective glass on your iMac is held on by strong magnets.
Power down and unplug the iMac.
You need two small suction cups to remove the glass from the iMac.
These suction cups maybe able to be found in hardware store or home improvement store.
These suction cups are of the type that can be used on window panes to hold small ornaments or hanging items attached to the window glass.
Place the suction cups at top right and left sides of the glass, make strong suction with the cups and slowly pull the glass forward toward you.
Once you have the top loose, grab the top opposite sides of the glass and pull the rest of the glass panel away from all of the magnets.
Place the glass on something soft like a soft heavy terry towel.
To clean the glass, use a non-ammonia type glass cleaner with a non-abrasive cloth.
A fairly decent size micro fiber cloth will work fine.
Throughly clean both sides of the glass, and replace the glass by putting the suction cups back , line up the bottom of the glass and attach the bottom of the glass, first.
Then slowly move the glass panel inwards holding the suction cups and get the glass close to the top and allow it to "snap" in place.
Restart the iMac and see if the blurriest went away.
If it didn't, then you may have to bring in your iMac to an Apple store or authorized Apple service center for servicing or a replacement LCD panel.
Depending on how much you paid for this iMac, get an estimate for repair.
It may cost more than you paid, for the iMac
You may have to consider purchasing another computer.

  • How to i resize a larger 72ppi image to better quality smaller image but for correct size to paste into flyer

Hi, I am trying to resize a larger 16cm wide image saved at 72dpi to a smaller better quality 5cm wide image for invites for an art exhibition I am having. I figure there must be lots of information in the pic given that it is large, I just want to condense it into a smaller image. If I adjust the size to 5 cm wide it changes the dpi to 230 which would be better for printing (the 72 dpi is way too grainy). However when I paste it into the flyer I am making in photoshop it pastes as a massive picture. I then tried to drag the corners in to make it the right size and it became even grainier than a 5cm wide 72dpi image. I hope that makes sense to someone. So basically I need a 5cm wide document size that I can put in my small flyer that is the best quality I can make it! Thanks in advance!

Up-sampling from 72ppi to 300-600ppi can result in blurry images.  It's always best to start with a good quality, high resolution image if you can.  Go to Image > Image Size.  When up-sampling, use Bicubic Smoother setting.  When down-sampling, use Bicubic Sharper.  See screenshot.

  • Small Issue - But it is really BUGGING me !!

When I type in what SHOULD turn into links (letters turn blue with a line under them and allow you to click on it) in either my emails or mainly for me in this situation now its my signature,,, email links seem to work but not actual web addresses.
It kills me and I can't figure it out. I looked for prefernces, searched in forums, etc... no answer.
Let me give you a exact example. In my signature (and also in some emails) I type in my web address and my email (along with name and number too obviously) for contact info and other various reasons. WELL when I either look at the "sent" email I JUST typed and sent, or if I look at it once I get replied back to from the receipiant, I see the EMAIL I typed has turned into a link, BUT the web address hasn't !! ?? It never does, and NONE of them (web address's) do.
    WHY ?
I am typing them in the same way I do anywhere else and it works, why not in Mail ?
Also, is this JUST how I AM SEEING IT ? or is this how my receipiants are seeing it too ?
I want them to get the LINKS, not just typed letters.
Ever since I used computers I noticed once you type either a web address or a email, it AUTOMATICALLY turns into a link,,,,,,, So what gives here ?? How can one thing be turning into a link, but the other thing aint ?
    Thanks --

David, you are quite correct. In my first response I posted this:
    1) If you type a web address starting "www." it may not display on the recipients computer as a link.
    2) If you type it starting "http://www." it will.
I didn't think to explain how an individual email application parses text in messages it receives!
RR wanted a solution to ensuring that his url appeared in all circumstances as a clickable link (at the recipients end, {regardless of his composition view}), and composing in Rich Text and entering the complete html tag accomplishes this, and in the post I did state that the message had to be composed in Rich Text for this to work.
In the original post I did also explain that typing in www. was not sufficient to have the url represented as a link in all cases at the recipients end, but that one must type in http://. He was unwilling to do that.
Having said that, your correction about the advice on Signatures IS accurate, and is simply a reflection of observations of my email progam and that of those I send emails to. Hopefully RR will read this and better understand.
I have learned that there is always room in your mouth for your other foot!
