Small office (5 users) - Accounting - wanting to secure ingress/egress of docs..I haven't seen this answered for an office of this size.I have the need for a relatively cheap software package or guidelines (I'll still keep the search active) for how to block, or at least alert, of sensitive data from leaving the company.I know that I'll have challenges on:1. Blocking certain attachment types from being sent, via webmail, web site attach, email. I am sure someone's written a how-to but I'm darned if I can find it. Suggestions?
2. Blocking certain programs from running (whitelist/blacklist) - not really wanting to be deep in their pockets every time the application is updated, so not sure if a hash list would be a good idea based on a GPO security policy, or if black/white lists are best?3. Web blocking - I'm thinking I am wanting to...

  • 2 user accounts want to use the same program

Unfortunately when I downloaded firefox I didnt specify at install that it was for both user accounts.
How can I without downloading the whole program set it so it opens in both accounts the admin where it does now and my standard account?

I thought when you wanted to install software you just double clicked the installation file and away it went.
a few apps do install that way, but not Firefox. Most Mac apps are "drag and drop."

  • OD network user accounts with radius secured wireless

    ok.
i'd like to use radius security on my wireless network.
i also have 300+ OD users, who log on using both wired desktops and wireless laptops.
however, once radius is up and running, i no longer can access the "other..." user login option on the laptops, as the laptops can't conenct to the network to get the OD user info.
how to i work around this? do i add the OD bound  laptops themselves to the allowed users?
    ta

Well, folks, it turns out that the network user list is in fact displayed, but there's a slight catch that had me fooled. I've got a single local account set up. This local admin account is selected by default and displays the password field. When I hit ESC to clear it, that local account only is displayed for about 15-20 seconds. This fairly long delay made me think it would never happen... whoops. AFTER about 15-20 seconds, the full login list is displayed. Unless you clear that pwd prompt by hitting ESC or clicking Back, the list is never displayed.
Now that I've created a second local user account for other reasons, the pwd prompt does NOT automatically appear, and the network user list is displayed after 15-20 seconds, despite WPA.
Problem solved. Now we'll just see if 26 users can log in simultaneously over wireless... I won't hold my breath for too long!
    Thanks for your time.

  • Two Users/Accounts: Want separate views of purchases. Possible?

    Hi!
Grateful for advice on setting up iTunes/Store so that when I purchase music my tracks appear in one list, and when my wife signs in on her account she can see her own songs.
We have just set up an account for my wife, but when she signs in the 'purchased' list shows the items I bought through my account. So, it looks as though our separate purchases will all pile in together and appear in the same list as time goes on. We really need to keep things separate for the sake of sanity.
    Can this be done?
    Help save our marriage!
    Cheers
      Windows XP

The best way (and perhaps the only way) would be to have separate accounts in Windows and each of you log into Windows using your own account. That would keep your iTunes libraries completely separate.

A security feature of OSX. It encrypts your entire home folder.
See: [Mac OS X 10.6 Help: About FileVault|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8727.html]
Do you not remember turning this on, via +System Preferences > Security > File Vault?+

  • User Account File Sharing

I've searched this forum to find my answer, but I'm shocked by what I've read, and although it makes sense, I can't believe OSX (10.4) has been set up this way and want to double check with you guys before I give up.
I want to have two user accounts on my Mac. I do not have a broadband connection so, obviously, I don't have a .Mac account.
I want these user accounts to share the following:
    • various files/docs
    • iCal
    • Address Book
    • iPhoto
    • iTunes
I know how to share files (use the shared folders).
Sharing iCal and my addresses w/o .Mac involves either third-party plug-ins or moving stuff around and making symbolic links. In either case, some users have said that updates made by one user may not be automatically seen by another...something that I'm not going to mess with.
Sharing iPhoto and iTunes seems pretty simple, but those programs run into problems when they're updated to, right? Can I share these libraries, add content to them, and have both users see the new content without having to manually update the library?
For what I think should be a pretty easy thing to set up this all looks like a pain and when all is said and done, will not have the functionality I enjoy now with only one account. Is this really the current state of affairs for those of us without .Mac accounts?

You need to create a shared folder in which both users will have read+write access to everything added inside. Prior to Tiger this was not easily done. But now it can be done with a quick trip to the command line to enable ACLs:
    1) Log in as an administrator and go to /Users/Shared.
    2) Create a new folder inside, call it something like SharedLibraries.
    3) Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, and enable ACLs by typing:
    sudo fsaclctl -p / -e
    4) Set ACLs on the new folder by pasting all of this at once:
sudo chmod +a "USERNAME allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
    addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" \
    /Users/Shared/SharedLibraries
Replace USERNAME with the short name of one of the users to whom you wish to give access.
    5) Repeat step 4, replacing USERNAME with the short name of the other user.
    6) Close Terminal.
    7) To share the iPhoto Library, log in as the user who has the library you want to share.
    8) Open up two Finder windows, one showing /Users/username/Pictures and the other showing /Users/Shared/SharedLibraries.
    9) Drag the /Users/username/Pictures/iPhoto Library folder to /Users/Shared/SharedLibraries to move it to the new shared folder.
    10) Command-Option-Drag the iPhoto Library back to its original location. This will create an alias to its new location.
    11) Log in as the second user, and command-option-drag the iPhoto Library from the new shared folder back to the user's ~/Pictures folder.
    12) Repeat steps 7 to 11, moving the appropriate libraries (iCal, Address Book, etc) for the apps you want to share.
Once you are done, both users will be able to use and edit the same shared libraries, just as if they were that user's own.

  • User account delete?

I am cleaning out my iMac (gift to daughter) and I have initiated a user account delete (the secure option I think it's called).  It has been trucking along for several hours now so I am wondering how long this could take.
Of course, I never thought of trashing all of my pictures and music beofre starting this so I guess this is what is taking so much time.
I don't think attempting to stop would be a good idea.
Opinions and suggestions as always are welcomed.
    Cheers!

Depends on the size of the account.  Could take many hours, as OSX is writing zeros over every byte.
I don't think attempting to stop would be a good idea.
Probably correct;  I've never dared to try it.

  • I want to secure my email account for other users of the i-pad. Is this possible?

I want to secure my e-mail account for other users of the i-pad....
    Is this possible???

    no.
The only way is if you use a webmail app - not the included e-mail app - so you can password protect it online.
The iPad is meant to be a single user device so it has no protocols to partition off any part of it (beyond what restrictions allow)

  • Help-I want to move my stuff out of admin user account to a non-admin user account for security.  How can this be done?

So... I have amassed loads of documents, videos, music, photos, etc. onto my MacBook Pro all under the admin user account I set up for myself.  I am the only one who uses the MacBook.  I now work virtually and am online at different free wifi spots, and I want to access all of my stuff under a non-admin user account for security reasons.
I attempted to uncheck the "allow this user to administer this computer" box under my admin user account, but it is greyed out and I cannot.
Is there an easier way to fix this than backing up all of my stuff and then moving it to a non-admin account?

There is only one solution: create a new Standard user account and set it as your auto login account, if you use that feature.
Using what you describe is mostly a false sense of security. Were someone to hack into the computer they could hack into the standard account, so you would not wish to keep any sensitive data in that account. Other things to consider:
Turn on your Firewall in Security & Privacy preference panel.
Use software to mask your online presence such as ProxyCap 2.03, MacProxy, Proxifier, or Hotspot Shield.

Just bought a 3TB Time Capsule for a small office. Will have 4 users with MacBooks. What would ne the best setup for time machine individual backups and internet sharing in a secure way?

Set up each Mac for Time Machine backups in the normal way.  Time Machine will keep each backup separate on the Time Capsule, so users will only be able to see the backups of their own Mac.
Yes....there are convoluted workarounds that might allow one user to see the backups of another.....IF...they know the administrator password of the "other" Mac.
As far as Internet sharing, all users will have access to the Internet if they have a wired or wireless connection. If a Mac connects using wireless, it is possible to limit the time that they are allowed to connect to the network.
For example, you might limit the ability to connect to the wireless from say each Weekday from 8 AM to 6 PM.
With a wired Ethernet connection, you cannot limit access times to the Internet.

  • Best practices for setting up users on a small office network?

    Hello,
I am setting up a small office and am wondering what the best practices/steps are to setup/manage the admin, user logins and sharing privileges for the below setup:
Users: 5 users on new iMacs (x3) and upgraded G4s (x2)
Video Editing Suite: Want to connect a new iMac and a Mac Pro, on an open login (multiple users)
All machines are to be able to connect to the network, peripherals and external hard drive. Also, I would like to setup drop boxes as well to easily share files between the computers (I was thinking of using the external harddrive for this).
    Thank you,

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.
When you install AD DS in the hub or staging site, disconnect the installed domain controller, and then ship the computer to the remote site, you are disconnecting a viable domain controller from the replication topology.

  • How do i enable office applications for all user accounts on the same machine?

    Hi All,
I just purchased a new MBA and Office Hame & Business. Coming from the windows world I thought that one installation of office should be available to all accounts that I set up on the same machine.  I set-up the user accounts then installed office 2011 for MAC and tried to access office from my daughters account -> can not locate office?  Does MS expect that you need to purchase a separate copy of office for each user on the same machine??  I also don't want to waste precious harddrive space in the MBA to have separate copies of the same application installed.
    Any help would be appreciated....
    Andrew

One install allows all your users to use Office.  All your users have access to the Applications folder where the office apps are installed.  Do you see the office folder from your daughters account in applications?

Can you merge two user accounts on a macbook? my wife has created a new user on her new macbook air then, inadvertently, created a second one when using the migration tool. 1st a/c has her office 365 install, while 2nd has her itunes database, docs and contacts. What is the best way forward to get everything into the one account? Not sure if the office 365 will allow another installation into the second account, otherwise would just do that and delete the first, if that is possible?

There is no merge but you can move data from one account to another via the Shared folder. Data is copied from Shared. Watch your free space when copying. These are large files.  Do one at a time if you are on a small drive. After making copy, delete from other users before you start next copy.
Office365 installs in the main Applications folder and is available for all users on the computer. Activation is tied to the drive not the User.
