SMB problem?

When I try to connect to a Windows 2003 disk, in Domain, I get this error:
The alias "XXXX" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.
When I try it with Go/Connect to Server then smb://name.of.the.pc.or.IP/share.name I get prompted that username and password is not correct (but it is, 100% correct).
Thanks for all replays, and sorry if this topic has already been opened somewhere, but I'm at work and really don't have time to find it.
Jerry

Is their a way to do this w/out purchasing software?
Automator is built in, though I'm sure several other people could come up with a better solution, here's my quick one, might see if it works for you.
Open Automator, in it's Library>Applications>, choose Finder, then drag the Sort Finder Items to the right and drop it, choose by Modification Date>Ascending, then under the File Menu, choose Save as Plugin..., give it a name, choose Plug in for:> Folder Action, choose the folder you want watched, Save.
Then what should happen when a file is added/changed in that Folder, it should refresh & sort it.
Does this not work for SMB and if not is that a limitation of the OS?
I think it's just the Finder lagging the updated view of the window.

  • SMB-problem: can see/manage files, but cannot open from Windows 8.1

I have some files shares on a  Mavericks server (clean install, including OSX Server). I can connect and see the shared files from my Windows clients (both 7 and 8.1). I can even create files, rename them, etc. From Windows 7 i can also open and edit them. So far, so good!
From Windows 8.1 however, opening does not work: simple text-files and pdf's don't open at all (server cannot execute instruction/file already open), office documents can only be opened in read-only mode.
In the System log (on OSX Server) are a lot of lines like: smbd[714]: File system does not support 0x0 time attributes (or does not support 0x400000, file attrs).
Using Windows Power Shell, I figured out that there is a SMB2.1 connection between Windows and OS X, which seems
to be correct. It appears that OS X judges that Windows is using one or more wrong parameters in an SMB-system call.
I had lots of SMB-problems using Mountain Lion (Snow Leopard server was fine). I don't want to force my Windows machine to use SMB1 (for all shares) using the commands found in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2696547 (I didn't try yet).
    Any help would be appreciated.

So I have the exact same issues. I actually called Microsoft Support and they tried a bunch of different things. They even tried disabling SMB 2 and 3 on my Windows 8.1, but then I was unable to connect to my OS X 10.9.1 Server share point at all anymore!
Here is what I found out. When I start up from my 10.6.8 Server backup on my Macmini Server, and then mapped the network drive on letter G on Windows 8.1 Pro client machine to that very same share point -  worked like a charm. I can read , write and such all fines on that share. All is well. Leaving the Windows 8.1 client alone, on the macmini server I selected the upgraded 10.9.1 Server volume and restarted the Macmini Server. After restart, guess what, I was able to perfectly access the files from Windows 8.1 on the OS X share point which of course was still mapped as drive G on 8.1 from earlier.
Now here comes the kicker. I went ahead and restarted Windows 8.1 and then everything went haywire! I opened the Windows 8.1 desktop and brought up My Computer. I saw that the mapped drive G is no longer connected (red X). I went ahead and double clicked it and then Windows Explorer simply hug itself and wouldn't come back. I had to force quit explorer and ended up ultimately restarting Windows. After restart I went ahead and disconnected the mapped network drive (G), and then re-mapped it. I authenticated with the very same username and password as before. This time I am able to see all the files once again, but can't open or work with any of them. It is super jinxed. In my opinion there is a severe bug in Apples SMB 2 or smbx or whatever they call it. Why couldn't thy just leave it alone and pay a licensing fee and use Samba? It's just so stupid!!!!
Apple, you must fix this problem. I will tell the server tech that I have been working with the very same thing. They should have never release 10.9. It was premature and not ready for prime time. It's good to know that there is a work around however. It is super teadious, and spastic, but hey, at least I get it to work. Either it has something to do with authentication, or the way OS X 10.9 responds when mapping a network drive on windows 8.1 pro? No clue.
Apple does not pay me to Q&A their software. This stuff should simply work! I am ****** off and have wasted now over 3 weeks of my precious time banging my head against the wall with Apple stuff.
Come one guys, get your stuff straightened out.  thanks.

  • SMB problems with Vista and Samba 3.0.25a

I've got a huge problem with my network setup here. I've read the previous posts about non working samba shares, but I did not found any working tips. I have done some additional tests, and I would like to share them with you, maybe anyone finds the solution based on them.
So the problem is that I cannot access smb based shares. Not on my Windows (Vista) workstation, and not on my freebsd server (samba 3.0.25a). Login seems to be successful. When I enter a wrong username, or a wrong password, the finder tells me that this credentials are wrong. So as far as I can see the problem must be behind the login step.
My samba logfile does not report anything, same for the firewall logs from Leopard. When I try to list the shares from the terminal (with smbclient) it works fine. I even can mount this shares, but the goal was to have it available in the finder.
When I use +K to mount the share the manual way, I can enter the username and password (if they are wrong, I get the right error message), but after that I get only the connecting dialog.
Thank you very much to everyone who might have any idea how that could be fixed.
    Have a nice day.

FYI: This issue was fixed in 10.5.2, and there is a workaround for previous versions: Remote % signs from the password.

  • SMB problems.... printing and virtual homes

I have SMB printing enabled and I am finding that all of the PCs using it show in their queue that they do not have permissions to print, however half of them can print despite the error message....
Has anyone else seen this or know what could cause it?
Also, SMB virtual homes with not let me shut it off. It keeps checking the box back when I hit save.

    Hello Matthias
See Don's reply from Feb 7, 2011. This applies to any version of CRW32.exe. The viewer you are refering to, is simply a "crippled" version of the exe in that it does not let you change db connections, etc., etc. But it still uses the WIN APIs. Re.:
Furthermore, as a customer of the Crystal Reports product (paying for licenses since more that a decade now) we would expect there is a solution to this problem. This means that the print functions offered by the CR runtime should be able to generate an output that can be parsed by external programs (like fax software), just like is was in the previous versions of the CR runtime.
See Don's reply from Feb 7, 2011 where we explains the issue succinctly and in pretty good detail.

  • Lan, NAS, SMB problem with Lion

Hello I have 2 mac on which I installed Lion, unfortunately I have some serious problems with my LAN.
I have 2 NAS which I can not log in, one is STORA of the Netgear (which I hope will update) and an older (a FISC CHD by StoreTech I do not think the update)
... how can I do with it? Do not tell me that I must throw in a stupid update ... it's a NAS RAID 5 with 4 drives ...
I also have another problem with my multifunction printer Kyocera 250Ci, in practice I always use the network scanner so that I would send the files to inside of the machine by entering the IP address and shared folder ... without making any changes, after the installation of LION, the scanner tells me I can no longer find the way, I checked everything and rebuilt 100 times ... but nothing!! has the machine 1 month of life and costs a few thousand of € .... also this is absurd!
Someone can help me to find a way to use my device? SMB protocoll is the same in SL and Lion?
    Tank's a lot!!

    Hi everybody,
same configuration for me (exempt itunes 10.5.2) and same problem for me. I remember a time when it worked, all of a sudden, it stops. If I click on the shared library, the contents is displayed for a second and afterwards iTunes jumps back to main library. So, you are not alone, checked it also with a different user account, no change.
    Keep you informed,
    Thomas

  • Wifile pro - smb problem

I am trying to get WiFile Pro on a Palm TX to connect to a Macbook over wifi. The mac has to have windows smb sharing turned on and I have done that. It connects OK but then the WiFile Pro on the palm reports that the connection has been dropped. If I look in the System log on the mac there is an smbd process crash report starting out with

    Any ideas ?
    Thanks - Michael
PS - I have used wifile pro before on previous macbook and pre 10.5

    Hi Michael,
I've been having the same trouble with my TX. What I can tell you is that it is clearly a Leopard problem, since I can successfully connect to a MacBook running Tiger - and everything worked fine (as it did in the past with my previous G4 iBook under Panther and Tiger).
Also, I did successfully get an ftp connection to my Leopard MacBook Pro via my Airport Express base station. I had all 3 file sharing options turned on and the firewall on 'Set access for specific services and applications'. However, I have not yet been able to get either ftp or wifi to work via a peer-to-peer connection ('Create network' under the Airport menu).
Similar problems plague my efforts to sync with Missing Sync via wifi. I may occasionally have managed to hit on the right combination of settings, but I can't recall them.
Hope this might help a little.
As for me, the iPhone is beginning to appear in my dreams!

  • Another smb problem

    hello,
on my network I have 12 macs and 2 win machines. on the server the windows services are activated with Primary Domain Controller on, guest access on, Wins server enabled. I have two users in workgroup manager who are the pc users, with their own uid and pwd.
The problem is that everything work fine, but every few days the win machines cannot see the server in their neighborhood (but they receive their IP from DHCP, can have access to internet through the server, send and receive mail). If I restart the server everything works fine again. If I connect from a mac using smb, it works... It seems that there is some service app closing, apparently without any reason. Anyone has any idea?
    Thank you

I'm having this same problem. It cropped up after 10.4.5 update and wasn't fixed with the 10.4.6 update.
I tried this with mixed results.
In windows services from the Server Admin App stop windows services and change to a stand alone server. Then restart Windows services. Then Stop it again and switch it back to whatever you had it and restart Windows services again. Then I rebooted the server. Prior to this my windows boxes would drop connections to the server every 10minutes to 24 hours. Since this proceedure, it's been holding now for 48 hours.... we'll see...

  • SMB problems still exist after 10.5.6, plus more instability

I have an issue that I have documented with Apple concerning mounting of SMB shares to Windows servers (see jyappleconvert.blogspot.com) on 10.5.5. I had been getting around the issue by running VMware Fusion and opening shared folders and documents with apps running under Windows.
Although I didn't see anything specific about this issue I installed 10.5.6 in hopes that it would solve the issue... As soon as I got it installed I attempted to mount an SMB share and got nowhere. I messed around with it for a while. Either it wouldn't mount... just spin and spin, or I got a request for credentials... which I shouldn't need since I'm using my AD credentials (Mac is bound to AD), but even when entering correct credentials it wouldn't connect. I even tried unbinding and rebinding to AD. Finally, it started to work... not sure why but I was able to mount the shares. Then I ran my test that I had been running to get the Kernel panics to appear and I was not able to do so... so I assumed that it might be fixed.
I dropped back in my AppleScript to mount the shares on login and it seemed to work. Today, when I logged on, I choose the mobile user icon instead of the Other user icon and when I got in I noticed that my shares were not mounted... when I tried to do it manually I was back to the same thing as yesterday. So, I logged out and back in using the Other user icon and the script ran fine and the shares mounted.
I was gone most of the day and I had logged off my Mac. When I logged back on, I went in via the Other icon and now not only aren't the shares mounting, but I'm getting the colored spinning beach ball when I try to do anything involved with Finder. I was able to get the system preferences up and I removed the applescript login item for mounting the shares, and relaunched Finder and quickly logged out. Then I logged back in and it seems OK now. So, although I don't seem to be getting the kernel panics like I was before, I'm also starting to have other serious issues relating to mounting Windows shares.

I looked through the log files for the time frame in question and didn't see anything relating to Kerberos. So I did some more experimenting. It's preliminary, but the problem may have to do with a third-party addon that I use called Default Folder X.
I don't run this on my test Mac Mini, which I haven't updated to 10.5.6 yet, so I know that this wasn't the problem in 10.5.5.
However, I quit DFX... hmm just noticed that when I typed the abbreviation for the application, it's the same abbreviation that I found in the log file this morning... wow...
Anyway, after I quit the program, I was able to once again mount my SMB shares. So I thought that perhaps I hadn't upgraded to the latest version and perhaps that was the problem... but no, I was at the latest level. Tech support info on their web site led me to a problem that can occur with a corrupt preferences file. I followed the instructions to delete the old preferences file, reregister the app and start again. After this, I logged out and then back in and DFX started OK and I am now once again able to mount the shares. At least for the moment, the problem is (once again) fixed.

  • LoginHook SMB problem

    Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone could provide some insight into a strange problem I'm having mapping an SMB share in a LoginHook.
    Background
The problem involves the following 2 Windows 2008 R2 file servers, both built from a common image and are practically identical:
    SERVER1.domain.local
    SERVER2.domain.local
I am using domain account test1 for testing, NTFS and share permissions on both servers are correct and should allow access.
The Mac is running 10.7.5 and is bound to AD (no Open Directory).
    Problem
The following LoginHook is successful when logged in as test1:
    if [ "${1}" = "ladmin" ]; then
        exit 0;
    fi
    mkdir /Volumes/Deploy
    chown ${1} /Volumes/Deploy
    sudo -u ${1} mount_smbfs //SERVER1.domain.local/Deploy$ /Volumes/Deploy
    cp /Volumes/Deploy/*.sh /Users/Shared/.
    chown root:wheel /Users/Shared/*.sh
    chmod 755 /Users/Shared/*.sh
    cp /Volumes/Deploy/hosts /etc/.
    chown root:wheel /etc/hosts
    chmod 644 /etc/hosts
    umount /Volumes/Deploy
    dsmemberutil flushcache
    sudo -u ${1} /Users/Shared/login.sh "${1}"
    exit 0
The SMB share on SERVER1 is mounted as expected and the files are copied down from the server. The console has one entry:
    sudo:root : TTY=unknown ; PWD=/ ; USER=test1 ; COMMAND=/sbin/mount_smbfs //SERVER1.domain.local/Deploy$ /Volumes/Deploy
The following (almost identical) LoginHook is unsuccessful:
    if [ "${1}" = "ladmin" ]; then
        exit 0;
    fi
    mkdir /Volumes/Deploy
    chown ${1} /Volumes/Deploy
    sudo -u ${1} mount_smbfs //SERVER2.domain.local/Deploy$ /Volumes/Deploy
    cp /Volumes/Deploy/*.sh /Users/Shared/.
    chown root:wheel /Users/Shared/*.sh
    chmod 755 /Users/Shared/*.sh
    cp /Volumes/Deploy/hosts /etc/.
    chown root:wheel /etc/hosts
    chmod 644 /etc/hosts
    umount /Volumes/Deploy
    dsmemberutil flushcache
    sudo -u ${1} /Users/Shared/login.sh "${1}"
    exit 0
The SMB share on SERVER2 is not mounted. The console has two entries:
    sudo:
    root : TTY=unknown ; PWD=/ ; USER=test1 ; COMMAND=/sbin/mount_smbfs //SERVER2.domain.local/Deploy$ /Volumes/Deploy
    com.apple.loginwindow:
mount_smbfs: server rejected the connection: Authentication error
I have checked the security log on the file server and it does not show any attempted or failed connection from the Mac.
However, if I run the LoginHook after login in the context of root (and passing the username) using:
    sudo /Users/Shared/LoginHook.sh test1
then the share maps as expected!
I've been struggling with this for days so any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance

  • Continual SMB Problems

I really have searched for the answer to my specific problem but nothing has really satisfied my problem as of yet. Much to the chagrin of everyone I work with, I purchased a Mac two years ago. I had major problems getting my E-mail set up with Entourage and the IT folks we hired couldn't do a thing. After much fiddling and researching, I was the one to finally figure out how to at least get my E-mail.
I still do not, however, have access to the server (shared files, printers, etc.). I gave up a Saturday to sit at my computer with our Microsoft Certified something or other as we talked on the phone with MS support and walked through a confusing set of commands in Terminal. It did not net the desired results.
Today, I got this forwarded E-mail from our Business Admin. that came from the company we've hired to take care of our computer needs.
    +Regarding Macs on a Windows Network:+
+We'll need the connection procedure. I spent two hours with Microsoft Senior Technical Support with M-- and the Microsoft commands didn't work on the Mac. It doesn't appear to be a problem with the Microsoft Windows Network, it is a problem with the Macs connecting to the existing network. I would think there would be similar challenges trying to operate Microsoft Windows on an AppleTalk network.+
+F--'s network was not designed with Mac computers in mind. It is a Microsoft Windows network. We are happy to work with non-spec equipment, but it will require Technical Support from the vendor or manufacturer. Please ask D--, M-- or T-- to contact who they bought the equipment from (or Apple directly) and obtain the correct+
+procedure for connecting to the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server network. We'll gladly execute that procedure.+
These guys DO NOT like having to "waste their time" trying to figure out how to get us online (which in our situation, btw, is almost akin to telling the president and two sr. vp's of a company that it's their problem and they'll have to fix it.)
Any guidance from my enlighten brethren and sistren

Yes, my technical acumen is quite low which is part of the reason my blog isn't working right now
First things first: *Thank you, Rick, so much for your help!* I am able to access my folder on our server and I'm sure it won't be long until I'm printing over the network. You were very helpful.
I'd also like to clear up what might be a misconception based upon my unclear communication above. I was trying to write like a business person to make it easier to see where I am coming from. I am an associate pastor at a fairly large United Methodist Church. Every piece of electronic equipment that I use (computer, printer, labeler, camera, etc) is something that I purchased for use in my vocation. In the UMC pastors get moved around quite regularly and thus a Mac user might wind up in a Windows only place or vice versa (which happened to a friend of mind who went into a Mac-only environment). It's really not fair to expect us to shell out the money for a comparable Windows machine once we've invested, sometimes in a small church with no staff or network) a couple of thousand dollars in a Mac and its software (check out the prices on the modules at accordancebible.org to get an idea of what we spend on that!). So it's really helpful when we can figure out how to work together on the same server even though we might run different OS's.
I realize I came off a little arrogant in my original post and for that I'm sorry. It's been a little frustrating to not be able to use our network to its fullest capacity for the last two years. Now I appear to be able to do that and I am deeply grateful for all of the suggestions.

  • 10.8.2 SMB Problems

I am running a Mac Mini with 10.8.2 and am unable to connect from a Konica Minolta C550 printer using SMB.  It use to work before upgrading to 10.8.  Anyone know a work around for this as we had been storing all of our scans on our mac sever.

Yeah, I'm running OS X Server also on a Mac Mini and from my experiences, the PCs in the household couldn't connect via SMB to the Mac Mini until I set the Workgroup and Netbios Name in the WINS tab in Network on the Mini after a reboot.
Did any hardware change? Like maybe the router was replaced with a different brand and the Konica isn't getting the correct IP address?

  • Dreamweaver reports file "not found" when attempting to open files from SMB server...

User's work-files are hosted on a Windows Server 2003 SP2 volume accessed via SMB. She's been opening and saving the files from the server successfully in Dreamweaver for years from other Macs running Dreamweaver CS4.
Now she has an iMac running 10.7.4 and Dreamweaver CS6... and it's not the SMB problem you'd expect.
She mounts the server volume. She opens and saves files normally with full r/w permissions from any app... except Dreamweaver. For any file that she attempts to open in Dreamweaver -- whether from the Finder or from within Dreamweaver -- Dreamweaver pops up an alert reporting that the file at the file-path was not found. The same file is easily accessible from other apps and from the Finder. She continues to have full read/write access to the shared volume.
Local copies of the files do not have the problem. It only affects files hosted on the server and it only happens in Dreamweaver.
So, I create a new user account and everything works fine... The user mounts the sharepoint, opens a file with Dreamweaver... perfectly normal. Then she quits Dreamweaver and relaunches it... everything's fine. Repeatedly. It all works normally. She quits Dreamweaver and unmounts the share, then she mounts the share again and tries to open a file in Dreamweaver again... and it reports that the file was not found.
This is reproducible: If the server volume has been mounted and unmounted repeatedly under any user account, that triggers the error which continues occurring under that user account from that point on. A restart will not fix it. A safe-boot will not fix it. (In fact, restarting seems to trigger the problem by unmounting the volume.)
I tried trashing the entire contents of the ~/Library folder in one of the test-user accounts. It doesn't fix the problem. Once it strikes a user account, the only temporary fix seems to be using a new user account. And that's like a ticking time bomb just waiting for the problem to pop up again.
    Any ideas?
    TIA!!

I've seen on two computers so far. Looking at the mount point under unix, the share is being mounted at two different locations. This is normal behaviour for Macs when you mount two different shares with the same name.
    From terminal I run:
    df
    Which returns something like
    /dev/disk0s2                           1951845952 224463456 1726870496    12%    /
    devfs                                         360       360          0   100%    /dev
    map -hosts                                      0         0          0   100%    /net
    map auto_home                                   0         0          0   100%    /home
    //[email protected]/website  204360384  38067872  166292512    19%    /Volumes/website
    //[email protected]/website  204360384  38067872  166292512    19%    /Volumes/website-1
    map -fstab                                      0         0          0   100%    /Network/Servers
Notice that the share "website" has been mounted once as website, and again as website-1. This is the underlying unix name for the share, which is how most programs (99% sure including Adobe suite products) will reference files. So, if it thinks that the file is at /Volumes/website/site/index.html but can only see /Volumes/website-1/ then it doesn't know what to do.
The confusion arises because both will show in Finder as "website". Even more annoying is that Finder does not always unmount shares correctly, so that /Volumes/website might not be accessible but /Volumes/website-1 will be. As far as the user is concerned, the share "website" is still mounted, but as far as Dreamweaver is concerned, it isn't, although website-1 is.
It's the same share, same data, but is being referenced by different names, so does not seem accessible.
    BUT
I don't have a solution yet, apart from force unmounting both (or rebooting), remounting, and checking that Dreamweaver is using the right share (perhaps by removing and readding from within Dreamweaver).
    Tedious.

  • SMB Slow connection with upgrade to SnoW Leopard and Windows Clients.

    <pre>
    Dear,
I have now upgraded my MAC OS X LEOPARD 10,5,8 to new SNOW LEOPARD 10,6,2 and if some problems disappear I have a newer big one !
Now every time a Windows CLient try to connect to a SMB Share of SL server that take a long time about 10-15 seconds to open after that depending on client OS that could be nice for a moment (windows 7 and XP) or browsing stay very slow like for 2003 server connecting to Share on S.Leopard.
    Could you please help me.
My SL are the main SMB share computer with all data it is connect like other clients to AD (SBS2003).

and a Server 2008 acting like Terminal Server also member server of domain.

    Dear CarlosGBA,
So when you put 2 computers of your network in WORKGROUP in place of DOMAIN the 38 others works fine ? Strange ?
I have about 15 computers, some are already in workgroup other are linux smb other MAC, the data server are MAC OS X SL, the problem appear for all windows machines, I have try to dissable NTLMV2 and Kerberos since it is probably the faulty element with opendirectory, but always without success !
I don't know what I can do to trouble shout, I hope next release 10.6.3 come soon and correct about all SMB problem ! Probably a dream only ! Since I ask my self if Apple want to correct something andwhy is this problem let without solutionso long ! For a company it is a big problem.I suppose that Apple never read this forum and never answer our problem ! May be I should contact the support phone to be helped !
    Thanks for you help.

  • Cannot save file 2nd time CS4 ID=-54 om SMB server

    Hello,
We have a problem with saving .ai files in Illustrator CS4 on a Windows 2003 server with SMB filesharing with OX 10.6. If we save .ai files for the second time, Illustrator gives the error: 'cannot save illustration. file is locked or in use. ID = -54'.
If you save a file on the OSX 10.6 workstation, it gives no errror. It is an illustrator .ai smb problem. .eps or .pdf on SMB gives also no problems.
    Does anyone know a solution?
    Thanks!
    Percy

    Percy,
Saving to the harddisk is the safe and troublefree way. Saving through a network is a known troublemaker.
Maybe you can reset the network connexion somehow. You may try disconnecting and reconnecting between savings and see whether that solves the issue; at least it may show the nature of the issue.

  • Smb sharing packed up on 10.6.2?

    Hi all,
So we recently deployed a shining new 10.6.2 mac mini OS X server, to replace our ruddy 10.3 server box, and after the initial upgrade, everything has been up and running perfectly.
Suddenly, and for no reason, it appears as though SMB sharing has stopped working. Although our network consists of 99% apple clients, we still require SMB file sharing because we have one or two indespensable windows machines on the network.
So again, suddenly no clients can connect to the server via SMB. Not just windows machines - OS X clients also cannot resolve a 'connect to smb://aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd' request.
We've tried restarting the SMB server many times through Server Admin. Looking at the logs provided some interesting information, and this is listed below.
Again I'm not sure why this started happening. I should point out that when the problem started happening, i ran Disk Utility and it did find a hefty number of incorrect permissions. This has been rectified (through the usual repeated runs of 'repair disk permissions'... although the SMB problem persists.
Just to be sure there's no odd file system errors, I'm thinking about:
1)making a disk image of the entire drive,
    2)backing the thing up
3)booting to another mac whilst connected in target disk mode
4)deleting the partitions and restoring the image.
but obviously, it sounds like a good amount of work. Any other way to get samba happening again? Again, see log below.
    Thank you!
