SmoothCam troubling editing process

Just a few pieces of footage I wanted to be ' smoothcamed'.
Definitely not more than 20 seconds.
It takes hours rendering, and adds a lot of trouble:
- No autosave during rendering
- When you want to render audio or graphics, FCP starts rendering smoothcam first
- Turning off smoothcam clip by clip doesn't stop smoothcam-rendering
Smoothcam is troubling my editing process. What can I do?

Smoothcam will review the ENTIRE clip, not just the short bits you want.
Either capture discreet short clips (no Capture Now of the entire tape) or export the short segment you want to smooth cam then reimport it before sending to Smoothcam.

  • Filming to film editing process - best practice?

    Hey everyone,
This is an odd question, and I'm not really sure where to start looking. But basically, I've been doing a lot of film editing for my company. They send out 2 people to do the filming, then hand me the ra footage to edit. I am given a rough storyboard as well.
Now, my problem is this - because the filming is done by easiest access at the time (so it wont necessarily be in the order of the story board) and I'm not involved in the actual filming (so I don't know roughly when things are filmed) it's taking me so much longer to go through all the footage, and figure out what I need.
So does anyone have any good links or advice on how best to bridge these two processes? Or any experience in the industy to help me out?
I get very tight deadlines, and don't really have time to troll through hours of video. Which then I forget and get lost with it anyway, so I have to search through it again.
    Thank you for you help

Or, learn to use Adobe Prelude. I don't use it, but those who do might chime in here with their own opinions on the subject.
It's been a little while since I've worked extensively in Prelude so some of the features and details may have changed but the workflow is the same so I'll give it a shot...
Prelude is an app specifically designed to log and manage your footage before (and during...) the editing process. There's a lot you can do with it to edit metadata, add markers or selectively ingest footage, but at its moist basic level it's good for marking things up into subclips and then ordering them as a sort of rough cut to bring directly in PrPro. But of course that all takes time too, so depending on what your needs and proficiency level are, it still might be better to just use bins and things to organize it all in PrPro and then just edit directly from that.
Any way you cut it, 'logging' is a huge job, big enough that we developed a whole app just to help people do it effectively. That's also wht production houses often have dedicated logging pro's for that reason (but it still often falls to the editor in a big way). The production people in the field could certainly help your plight by trying to organize things a little as they go, but that sort of work comes with its own heavy pressures and priorities so that probably won't happen.

  • And is there a way to preserve track information during editing process?

Because I'm editing the gaps out of all the songs in my iTunes library, I'm spending tons of time re-entering the track information (Name, Artist, Genre, etc.) on every song, and also dragging the album art to the edited version.
It would be nice if I could just paste the edited song in place of the original in the iTunes library or, even better, drag and drop the whole row of info from the original into the cells for the edited version, much in the way that rows of data tables can be copied and pasted.
    Is this possible?

Whoa — I discovered the solution to my problem in, of all places, the iTunes File Menu under Get Info > Options. There (unmentioned in Apple's Help topics) is a place where you can set the start and stop times of songs to skip over any moments of silence — and don't have to edit the songs at all!
This isn't as elegant as cross-fading, but it's good enough for 90 percent of my music. For those occasional songs that do need some refining, I can make do with the more tedious editing process that I described in this forum.
Too bad I didn't find this solution before processing more than a hundred songs the hard way! But thank goodness I won't have to do that anymore.

  • Getting started with the editing process

Recently (about a year ago) took a hammer to all my PCs and purchased a PowerBook.  Since then I have purchased two iMACs for home use.  Also recently purchased (within the past 30 days) Final Cut Pro X, Logic Studio, Motion, Compressor and a few other rather complicated applications; complicated for me at least.  I've purchased a couple of tutorial books, but will admit they appear to be written for a reader who already has a working knowledge of this editing process using terms I am not familiar with.
What teachinig aids can any of you recommend for someone who is lterally starting at "below" ground level for video and audio editing and manipulation?

usually within less than 8-10 years you should understand this bunch of professional tools.
to get a first glimpse of the new interface paradigm of FCPX, spend an hour on the video tutorials for its Lil' Brother iMovie
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/index.html#button-1
it's a dumbed-down FCPX, but teaches you the differences to older NLEs (such as 'no tracks')
after accepting the principles of Events and Projects, skimming and key shortcuts, plus the different nomenclatura (lately some guy asked here, what is skimming - obviously he never touched any of the apps, nor a Mac), switch to the manual of FCPX

  • Editing Process-Inserting Silence not working

I have Captivate 3.0.1 Build 589.  I have noticed recently during the editing process when attempting to insert silence at the beginning of the audio, upon save (ok) the silence is removed completely eliminating the extra time needed to view the screen before the audio begins.  Has anyone experienced this as well?

    Hi there
If you can't make the insert silence work, please note that you are also able to move the audio waveform on the slide in the Timeline so it starts a short while later than it does at the moment. Pretty simple to do. Just click and drag it to the right.
Other than that, I've seen Captivate balk at inserting pure silence at the beginning of a clip. Normally it helps to try inserting a teensy bit beyond the "White noise" of the clip. Actually, what I do is to select some of the white noise and copy it. Then paste it as needed. Makes for a smoother sounding audio clip.

  • Speeding up the editing process on slower computer with noobie editor

    Hi, All!
I seem to spend a lot of time sitting and waiting, and would like to know if anyone has ideas for speeding up the editing process without spending thousands on a new computer.
Marking "ins and outs" in the viewer before putting into the sequence/timeline sounds like the first one, to save rendering all of the captured material..... Is this what "real" video editors do? Is it recommended to make subclips, or just to drag into the timeline and then mark new in and out?
Any other work habits that might help an inexperienced editor-person work faster?
I've heard that it's possible to "edit in low resolution and output in high resolution". Is this possible? What might be involved? I have tried lowering the render % settings, but there seems to be no way to go back and re-render the edited sequence.
Can I edit in DV and output in HDV? By re-capturing? Is that what "Capture Project" is for? Given that DV and HDV are not just the same thing with a different number of pixels, will the edits be at the same frame (etc)? At what point in the editing would I want to do a "low res to hi res" conversion?
Is there a piece of hardware that could make my editing faster on this machine? Video card with more memory, for instance?
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thank you!!
    CD

You should not have to render your captured material. If the capture settings match the sequence settings (conform this by checking item properties for both) then no rendering is necessary except for effects and filters.
Offline editing (editing in low res and capturing in full res) is not a function available in FCE.

  • Unable to edit process in Processes tab

    Hi
We've got some processes set up in our processes tab and in ES were are able to edit this.
Since we upgraded and created a new ES2 server these seem to be read-only.  When I try to edit one of the processes in the Process tab I get the message:
"You can only view and edit this process in the Applications view. If this process was created in a previous version of LiveCycle, create an application and import the process into it."
I can copy this process into my application and edit it in the Applications tab, but I can't find any way to get these changes back into the Processes tab.

  • Film Edit Process Q's & Reconnect Conflicts

I am one of two assistant editors on an independent feature film, shot on 35m, transferred to BetaSp pal for edit. FTL files (from the lab) are imported,
Batchlists and Database folders created. Our clips are then digitized from the batchlists in FCP. We edit at 24fps, video is converted through Cinema Tools and merged with the audio tracks when synced in FCP. (we are using the basic sync by clap system) Assistants have now started editing on multiple computers. We copy the editors project, all of the respected folders
(FTL, BATCH CAPTURE, DATABASE, etc) the media and seperate sound folders to our two 250-500GB Lacie fw drives. We work seperatly, finish a sequence, then take project files back to the editor's station; copy bins/sequences into his project and reconnect to the media that sits on his drives. Video always reconnects fine. When working with sync clips and reconnecting audio, I get this window, "some attrubutes of one or more files have chosen do not match attributes of original" 99% of the time the attribute conflict is listed as, "media start and end". Sometimes additional attributes: "reel, rate" are listed. I have the option of chosing "connect" anyway, and I've done a test with
this and even with "conflicts" sync appears fine. I want to be sure that everything happens smoothly with our audio post (sound designer working on a seperate system from our exported OMFs) and I want to be sure
that we output a good EDL. (we will be making a film cut to scan into "Luster", a DI system, and printing to negative from there) Also, what should we just
watch out for in this work process described? What are some pitfalls that I could be missing in copying media around, taking media off the assistant edit
drives, etc., as we work? Also for organizational purposes, I want to rename media folders (capture folder), where the clips were digitized into on the
editor's machine. (would like to reorganize media in general, intial organization untidy) Will this be a problem, most concern again for the EDL. Forgive me for some ignorance, first time working with film in edit. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks-
    amysands

Hi Jim - thanks for your advice, wondering if I should I have headed your warning earlier - I expressed concerns to Steve about EDL export, turns out I ran into some problems recently when doing an EDL test. If you have some time, I'd greatly appreciate any information or help you can offer. Here is my long winded explanation of what happened. (again, I'm an assistant on an independent feature film - finally getting back to the forum after being buried for a bit)
    OUR PROCESS:
    1) Film format: 35m 3perf, (plus some Super 16mm).
    2) Transferred to BetaSp PAL and Digibeta PAL.
    3) FTL files (from telecine)copied and imported to CINEMA TOOLS, Database created. Batch Lists created.
    4) Batch Lists imported to FCP, media digitized at 25fps. Media converted through Cinema Tools to 24fps. Media then “reconnected” in FCP.
    5) Audio (at 24fps) imported and synced with video (using the basic sync by clap system). Clips are “merged” as we sync. Edit occurs in 24fps, timelines.
    6) Finishing with DI - film negatives to be scanned, film print created.
    EQUIPMENT:
    FCP 5.0
    Cinema Tools
    G5, dual processor
    Mac OS X 10.4.2
    BlackLink Card
(assistants also working with copied media on an EMAC
and G4 Lap Top, projects transferred back to G5 system)
    REDIGITIZING AND EDL ERRORS:
Our offline footage was digitized at DV-PAL compression from Beta SP (PAL). We had also telecined to matching Digibeta (PAL) tapes. Recently we tried to re-digitize for a trailer capturing at 8 bit compression. We brought in a Sony Digibeta deck with SDI cable.
    Several problems occurred:
I tried first to export an EDL from FCP. In a new project, I imported the EDL and started to re-digitize. The system immediatly searched for timecode out of the ballpark from the tape (not even the same hour).
I was able to batch digitize from the sequence (still in a 24fps timeline). Media then had to be conformed to 24fps through Cinema Tools. In/Outs for the most part would match. However, maybe because our FTL codes were not broken into individual takes, huge source clips needed to be recaptured. For example, for a 30sec clip in the timeline, 6 minutes of footage was digitized. We had to capture large source files corresponding to our smaller edited clips. This took up more space and time then we had available.
Even after conforming the media to 24fps, some clips did not match the in/outs of the original sequence. 15% of the clips were not even batch digitized; tape numbers or clip names ignored all together in the batch digitize que. This occurred even with selecting “digitize online” clips function.
A seperate issue, but mastering back to digibeta was also unsuccessful. We tried rendering the sequence out at 25fps, (which took a huge amount of time) and then discovered that we could still not print to tape on the digibeta deck. It would not output at all - we got only a fuzzy green screen. We have tried both component / composite and SDI but its the same each time. We've also tried to output to a BetaSP deck - no result. In the end we exported quicktimes and outputted via firewire to DVCAM. I have since read that mastering back to Beta is commonly problematic.
Any insights as to why the digitization is erratic? Why the EDL is not working? The EDL is the most concerning problem - will need to eventually both work with high res footage and scan our negatives for the DI and print to film. Should I create an EDL through Cinema Tools? Am I missing something in the EDL settings maybe? Trying to do some quick reading on this as well - thanks guys for all the help -
    Amy

  • Troubles editing tables with partitions

I'm running SQL Developer 1.5.3 against Oracle 10/11 databases and SQL Developer has trouble with my partitioned tables. Both the schema owner and sys users experience the same problems.
The first time I try to edit a table, I get an "Error Loading Objects" dialog with a NullPointException message. If I immediately turn around and try to edit the table again, I get the Edit Table dialog. That's annoying but there's at least a work-around.
Next, if I select the Indexes pane, I can view the first index but selecting another one results in an "Index Error on <table>" error dialog. The message is "There are no table partitions on which to define local index partitions". At this point, selecting any of the other panes (Columns, Primary Key, etc.) results in the same dialog. While the main Partitions tab shows my partitions, I cannot see them in the Edit Table dialog. In fact, the Partition Definitions and Subpartition Templates panes are blank.
Does anyone else see this behavior? Version 1.5.1 behaved the same way so it's not new.
Of course I've figured out how to do everything I need through SQL but it would be handy if I could just use the tool.
    Thank you.

Most of my tables are generated from a script so this morning I decided to just create a very basic partitioned table. It contained a NUMBER primary key and a TIMESTAMP(6) column to use with partitioning. That table worked just fine in SQL Developer.
At that point I tried to figure out what is different about my tables and I finally found the difference... Oracle Spatial. If I add an MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY column to my partitioned table, SQL Developer starts having issues.
I also have the GeoRaptor plugin installed so I had to wonder if it was interfering with SQL Developer. I couldn't find an option to uninstall an extension so I went into the sqldeveloper/extensions directory and removed GeoRaptorLibs and org.GeoRaptor.jar. GeoRaptor doesn't appear to be installed in SQL Developer anymore but I still see the same behavior.
It appears that there is an issue in SQL Developer with Oracle Spatial and partitioning. Can someone confirm this?

  • Best Mac Pro (2013) configuration for photo editing/processing?

    Hi all,
I couldn't find a reliable answer to this in my searching here or on google, hence I'm posting it here.
I'm going to buy and upgrade to the new mac pro when it's announced this month (Dec 2013).  My primary use will be photo processing in photoshop.
Configuring it with 64gb RAM is the no-brainer part. And probably a 512gb or 1TB flash drive too.
The bit I'm unsure about is whether to opt for the 6 core processor option over the quad core?  For photo editing (adding layers, filters, brushing in, multiple files open at times, running batch edits etc), does anyone have an opinion on whether the performance increase (if there is in fact any increase for photo work?) of the 6 core 3.5ghz would justify paying the extra AU$1300 difference over the quad core 3.7ghz option?
And from my earlier research paying the huge prices for 8 or 12 cores would simply be a waste for photo processing.
    Thanks for the advice...

    Mozzzaaa
I have the exact same requirements, here are my findings based on some observations from Activity Monitor and research based on how the hardware works.
Photoshop does not utilize multiple cores well for many standard editing ativities - therefore one core will be busy while the rest remain idle, however I have noticed over time that upgrades to Photoshop seem to take more advantage of multiple cores as Adobe updates the code. For example, appling filters utilize all of the cores while the filters are computing changes (smart sharpen for example).  Try running CPU monitoring in Activity Monitor (double click the CPU graph to display all cores).
Lightroom utilizes all of the cores for Import, export and other activities that process multiple files.  Being more modern code, it beter utilizes muti cores.
Keep in mind that each core handles two code threads, therefore a four core system is capable of processing 8 "streams" of code, the 6 core can manage 12 threads, etc.
Here is a screen shot of Mac Book Pro running PS CC Smart Sharpen:
All the new Mac Pro run at 3.9Hz Turbo Boost - they are all the same in that respect.  This means that when the processers are not hot, at least one core will run at 3.9Hz - therefore on a relativly idle machine (just editing in PS for example) you would likley be running at 3.9Hz on all the Mac Pro 2013.
There are also the GPUs to consider.  Apple as usual has not made enough information available to easly determine the cost benefits of the more powerful GPUs and I don't know if PS would utiliize the AMD GPUs well now,  or perhaps better utilize them for the future.  Perhaps someone could comment on that.  Here is an interesting article: http://architosh.com/2013/10/the-mac-pro-so-whats-a-d300-d500-and-d700-anyway-we -have-answers/
Clearly the D500 that is standard with the 6 core seems a major bump over the 4 core D300 (therefore the costs of the 6 core reflect that).  I don't know how much the D700 would cost - it would be helpful if this were published so I could consider my order.
There are two GPU in the new Mac Pros - but the purpose of the second one is not toally clear (thanks again to Apples's communication).  It likley will be utilized for all sorts of things that don't really exist now and FCP X is scheduled for a new release better utilize the GPU for video (as nwaphoto mentioned video processing will be a major use of this equipment).
I was interested in your comment regarding 64 Meg ram.  Yes that would be a hudge boost to PS performance, but would it be better to purchase from Apple or wait for OWC who offer RAM at major discounts over Apple.  Once again, no info yet that I am aware of.
I believe the flash drive is upgradable but rumor has it that it uses a proprietary connecter. Makes me want to go with the largest size but once again OWC might be the way to go for an upgrade in a year or two.
In the past, the 6 core 2012 Mac Pro's were somewhat of a sweat spot in terms of horsepower vs cost.  I will be considering that in my decession to upgrade. So I am considering a 6 core,  will check out the Ram and Flash diIsk based on price - which is the infor I don't have.  If you have anything please post
    Thanks

  • Camera RAW editing process

So just a few questions here, I have a process where I go through my RAW D800 photos and do general touch-ups in camera, but have been wanting to do skin touch-ups in photoshop. My problem lies in the photo sizes (45mb per RAW photo to begin with). Is there any sort of way to make a workflow that would allow me to retain the raw photos and seperate photoshop files in a convenient manner?
I'm simply looking to avoid having 2GB folder for just a few images, and wondering if there's maybe some appropriate file formats for that.
    Thanks
    Mike

I don't know what your specific needs for editing are, but if you could do your various touch-ups entirely in Camera Raw, the edits are stored as metadata (meaning a whole separate file need not be stored).  Next time you open the file in Camera Raw it applies the metadata.
I store very few of my edited photos.  I just open the raw files up again and do whatever minor additional prep is needed (e.g., sharpening) for use.
A product I don't use, but which is somewhat suited to this strategy is Adobe Lightroom.  You might want to look into that.
By the way, this is the day and age of terabytes...  A really, really big disk drive doesn't cost a whole lot any more.  Even if you DO generate gigabytes of data you could, for example, store 1000 sessions that generate 3 GB of data on a 3 TB Western Digital MyBook external drive. Such drives cost a little over a hundred bucks.  Or you could burn DVDs.
