SNMP and Forte
I tried to post an answer earlier, but it seems to have
gone astray.
There is shareware information and source code for
an SNMP interface on the Forte home page. Look
under "Technical Info" and then under "Shareware."
This will show you how to build an SNMP sub-agent
using tools from SNMP Research, and establish
a gateway between Forte and SNMP. The same
assembly of tools should enable you to generate
SNMP trap instructions from events generated by
your Forte programs.
Hope this helps!
All my best,
Geoff
configure: error: This build is using a GNU C compiler (gcc) while Perl has been compiled with a non-GNU (or non-working) compiler (cc). This likely won't work for building with Perl support. Either specify a different compiler (--with-cc=PATH), disable this check (--disable-perl-cc-checks) or build without Perl (--without-perl-modules).The perl supplied by Sun should be compiled with Sun Studio and the error mentioned above seems to reflect this.
So, either build perl first with sunfreeware's gcc and then move on to net-snmp or install and use Sun Studio instead of gcc so perl is happy.

We have no problem using JDK 1.1.5. However, we are using Orbixweb. If
you are accessing the applet and the IOR file from the same host (exact
host name), then one other possibility is the JVM compatibility for your
browser. Using Javasoft's Activator or appletviewer should resolve
that.

1. I have been able to make my Java client appllication call-in to a
Forte service object with success. However the tricky part beginswhen
I try to do the same with a Java applet. I get an exception returned
which is an AppletSecurityException. I understand that running a Java
applet in a browser has two limitations, one being the Java applet
sandbox and the firewall restriction. As I am only running my Java
applet and the Forte service object on the same node, this rules out
the latter.
I have tried running the Gatekeeper from the same directory as myJava
client application, which includes all the client stub files
(including stub files which are generated from Forte supplier plans
such as those in the Framework folder). However, I still receive the
AppletSecurityException.
How can I go about making this operation successful?
**AppletSecurityExceptions can be caused by many problems--trying toaccess
machines other than the class download machine, or trying to accessserver
side classes outside the defined directory structure in the webserver. I'd
look closely at the classes that are being brought into memory (forexample,
Visibroker's ORB shows you each file as it is loaded) and make sureyour web
server is defined correctly. If you follow the Forte technotesclosely, it
usually solves this problem.
2. Has anyone tried implementing a 'fat' client, one that combines a
Forte web application, JavaScript, and a Java applet client toperform
operations such as validation and a tiny bit of data processing allon
the client side, relieveing the application server from such
operations? If yes, how do I implement the solution, and are thereany
tech notes from Forte that specifically tell me how to do this?
**We have created a Java framework that follows many of the designpatterns
and naming conventions as our Forte framework. The Java classes canbe
extended to marshal and unmarshal scalar data structs passed acrossthe ORB
boundary to instantiate 'thick' functional objects on the client, andas much
processing and as many business rules as wanted can be developed inthe
client
Java objects. If you look at the exception information in the iiop manual it
discusses exteneded propties DefaultThrowsClause, ThrowsClause and
IsThrowable.
If you mark your exception class with IsThrowable it will show up in the
IDL as an exception. If you use either DefaultThrowsClause(project) or
ThrowsClause(method) you will get the appropriate raises in the idl.
This will cause the idl2java to produce code which will allow you to catch
the exception.

Of course it should be caught from the Java side.

Re: Crystal Reports 5.0 (32-Bit) and Forte 2.0H16 on NT3.51
Dear Silke,
Crystal's default for identifying a table in the report design is
<schema>.<table>. You can change that by going to the Database Location menu
item and cutting the schema prefix off. You should do that for every table in
the report. The PESetNthTableLogOnInfo function will, I believe, not change
the schema prefix of a table, since it assumes you really want that schema,
i.e., as an override. Also, if you are using the propagateAcrossAllTables
feature of the function make sure that every table has the schema prefix cut
off, otherwise those tables will be skipped, since the propagate feature applies
to all other similar tables only. For example, some of the tables could be
Sybase, etc.
I believe you can change the default behaviour of the CR Report Designer in the
File->Preferences menu, so that when reports are designed the schema prefix is
not automatically attached.
I have compiled some guidelines on designing reports to make them work properly
with Forte. I will try to send them to you next week. Crystal Reports and its
C API are a good product, and you will get good performance once the report
design is set up properly.
Yours very sincerely, John Hodgson.

Hello,
I wonder if we have a similar problem.
We are using Crystal Reports 5 and Forte 3.0.F.2. For
the interface
between Forte and Crystal we have in Forte a Lib using
C-wrappering to
the C-API of Crystal.
We have developed a report on a database in our
development-environment. This report comes up with data
and works
correct. It's no different if we have saved the report
in Crystal with
data or without.
If we want to use the same report on another database
in our
test-environment the window from crystal reports comes
up and when
starting there is an error from the Crystal API
function.
Both environments use the same version of an Oracle
Database and are on
Open VMS. The client for the test is in this case
always the same.
From the C-API we use the method PEStartPrintJob after
we have specified
the rest for the report.
Is there a possibility that this is the same error you
mentioned? Or do
you have any other ideas?
Any help is appreciated.

Tim,
You need to upgrade to CrystalReports 6.0. There isa bug in the
interaction between Forte and CrystalReports 5.0 (Idon't know on
which side the bug resides, but I think that it is onthe Crystal end,
since the problem occurs both through C-wrapperingand OLE
interaction), which does not allow you to invoke thePrintReport

As far as I know, there is no workaround, and theonly solution is to
upgrade to CrystalReports 6.0.
FYI, there is no ActiveX control supplied withCrystalReports 5.0 -
you are actually using standard OLE integration.
Hope this helps...

RE: NT Server Reboot and Forte Partitions[Ref:C943460]
Hi Bradley.
At our customers, we need one of our Forte applications to be running for data
communications to take place. After a reboot, we need this application's
partitions to come online. The way we did this (as you suggested) was to use a
BAT file, and then install this as an NT service (we used a utility that comes
with the NT resource kit - srvany).
This works fine for us. One of the issues we had was that the partitions tried
to come online before Oracle was running - this resulted in the dbsessions
failing and the partitions not coming online. We got round this by preceding
starting the partitions with a loop that polled Oracle until it was up. Needless
to say, piping all output to log files was essential for us to figure out what
was going on.
Hope this helps,

what are my options for scripting this to happen automatically?
Currently the only Forte process on the server which starts up
automatically is the Forte node manager, through the installed NT

and then execute an fscript file to start the required forte partitions.
How is this situation being handled in other environments? Thanks.

I am not sure if this is the right solution in the long run, but if you
login into NT after reebot you can create a simple client that "pings" your
service objects and put the shortcut into the Startup Group. I think such a
client may also be useful to monitor your Forte server for application
specific parameters, instead of relying only on logs/econsole.

Re: Rational Rose product and Forte
We use Forte 3.0 with Rational Rose 4.0 since more than one year on a
medium size project (10 developers). I have not tried Rose98 with Forte,
so what I have to say may or may not apply to Rose98.
In general I am very satisfied with the Forte support of Rose. The code
generation facilities are sophisticated. For example from one attribute
in Rose you can generate a virtual attribute and the corresponding get
and set methods which implement the virtual attribute. You can even
change the naming conventions (how to generate the name of get and set
methods). You can also model all components of a Forte application like
interfaces, events, eventhandlers, constants, domain types etc.
Since access to the Forte repository is difficult, Rose does not read
from or write to the repository. Instead you must export a plan as a
.pex file, regenerate the plan from Rose and reimport the generated file
into Forte. Rose correctly preserves the code that you have written as
well as other information like GUI layout etc. Nevertheless this process
is a bit tedious and prone to errors.
Rose can import a Forte .pex and produce a model from it ("reverse
engineering"). This works O.K. but I use it only on small prototypes
that I developed in Forte to get a "first cut" of a model. The analyzer
has only a few global options (for example whether you want to model
object-valued attributes as associations or as attributes). In addition
it names all attribute types and method parameters with fully qualified
class names so that your methods tend to have very long signatures like
Add(input source:Framework.IntegerData):Framework.IntegerData
instead of
Add(source:IntegerData):IntegerData
On the other hand Rose generates correct Forte code if you use the short
form in your model. So I use Rose mainly for forward generation.
I find the combination of Rose with Forte very valuable, mostly because
Forte does not allow a convenient documentation of plans, classes and
attributes.
If you have additional questions, I will be happy to answer them.

As part of tool evaluation for modeling, We evaluated Rational Rose 98i . We
were able to import forte pex files into Rose model.
We had no problems with reverse engineering but there were problems related to
round trip engineering.
Since Rational Rose 98i did not have a repository based solution for
configuration management, it was quite a task to keep the model in sync with
multiple users updating it. However, I believe you can use Microsoft Source
safe for configuration management though we did not try this.

According to the docs, Forte 2.0 needs an NT machine or WIndows 2000 to run. I also found that the 3.0 version of Forte can run on Windows 98, but I need the
JSDK 1.3.1 (so it says) to run FORTE 3.0.
I am assuming that I can download/install FORTE 3.0
from this site and install with the JSDK 1.4 (hoping for a little backward compatability)........
Does anyone know if this is do-able?????...... I was kind of bummed when I saw that the 2.0 would only work on NT/2000 platforms...
Thanks very much
Mike

ATHanks for the prompt response guys....... I was laid off about 6 weeks ago .... I am an Oracle guy (Developed using Oracle FORMS and REPORTS), but from everything I see and hear it seems that JAVA will be the development tool for Oracle databases.... sooooo, since
I have some "free" time, I've decided to learn JAVA and get my Sun Certification....... lots of work, but I am
quite excited, so if you see my postings and they look kind of weird , it's my learning curve so-to-speak talking,
Sure wish I was in college now as my understanding is that JAVA is one of the required C.S. courses......
Anybody for ASSEMBLER ???? HA

is it possible to have the new podcast down load to the bottom of the list so i can hear them in order. instead of flipping back and fort?
Yes. What I did was create a smart playlist for "Genre=Podcast" and "Plays=0" (don't use Media Type, then it won't syc). Order the playlist by the date of the podcast, and make sure your podcasts are set to skip when shuffle. Works like a charm.

Does anyone have any experience using the Oracle pipes facility from an Oracle
stored procedure to talk to a Forte Service Object. We believe its possible, but
would like to hear some war stories.
Thanks,

FWIW, as of three days ago we have:
OpenVMS v7.1
Oracle v7.3.2.3.2
Forte v30G2
The local Forte apps are limited and small to date. Testing (including Y2K)
failed to show any problems with Forte and Oracle.
I'd be interested to know about any specific problem you have with Oracle
v73232 and Forte (30G2).

What is the most recent version of Oracle in use with Forte
under VMS, and
what version of Forte are you using with it? We're at Forte
3.0.G.2, but
still at Oracle 7.3.2.3.0, because when we tried 7.3.2.3.2 it
wouldn't link
(and no, I don't remember the version of Forte - sorry!).
Forte support
keeps telling us the current version "should work", but I'd
like to know
what "will work".
Thanks,

R: (forte-users) ASP and Forté
Hi Kenny,
I suggest you to use XML in order to publish your Forté services.
There is a Forté Library called HTTPDC that let you start up a listener that
answer to HTTP Request.
So you will have a ASP/Forté integration via HTTP/XML
Hope this helps.

Subject: (forte-users) ASP and Forté
Hi everybody!
I'm a new Forté developer, so i have some question about it, speciallyone:
I want to access Forté service objects through an ASP script. To be more
precise, I want to get back some informations (like, for exemple, the
information of a customer's account) from the Forté world and to make-upthe
web page in my ASP script.
Is it possible writing an ASP script (in VisualBasic for example) witch
calls Forté service objects?
How can I do that? Maybe by using Web Enterprise's libraries, but itseems
to me that Web access service objet returns only HTLM pages.
Any suggestions and explanations would be appreciated.
Thank's in advance for your replies,
Kenny,

Ps: Sorry for my bad english. ;))

Bonjour,

Comment signifier à l'IHM qu'une donnée a été updatée ce qui lui permettra

merci d'avance pour toute idée sur ce sujet !

Help needed with connectors for Netbeans and Forte
Im using Forte for Java
my biggest obstacle is connecting sub j-frames to the main j-frame
i have created a main J-frame and sub j-frames in one package
in the Main J-frame there are buttons that you click to go to the next frame the same way "a-href" in HTML works in the same window and back
what my problem is how to declare the connectors for each button to go to the sub-frame
what code generators are required and the process and how to lable each sub-frame to be called
my project is a finance program
i.e
Main Frame
Menu:- ( TVM) ----------> button
(simple interest)-------> button
etc
when you click the (TVM) button
it should open the TVM frame (subframe in the same window)
this is my problem your help please this is a project which i have a deadline to meet ive done research through out but couldn't come across any useful or relevent material
this is a lot easier with pascal but Forte is a compulsory and java
if you want the screenshots ill post it thru mail just drop your adress and ill forward it
thank youmatt010385 wrote:
Thanks
I have already tried all of the things that site suggests, there is nothing wrong with the servers, or the service, I have tried all the work arounds that they suggest, but I still cannot get it to work.
Having a quick read i see from a link there that you might need to open ports(port forwarding).
Are you using a HH3, if so, I believe that it does have trouble with port forwarding, you can try a search here.
I am not into games as such, so will have to leave it for others to possibly help with some info.

Java 2 v1.4.0 and Forte --- how to install on Win98?
I just received the CD labelled "Forte for Java 4," intending to use this to learn the language. There are no instrauction with it, and even all the readmes fail to give actual directions. So I found what seemed to be the install executable for Java (a few levels down) and ran it. I had guessed right and it went through the installation as I accepted defaults. Then, trying to install Forte, the installer balked by saying that it could not handle a path with a space in it. So why did the defaults for Java go ahead and put it into the usual "Program Files" folder if the associated software could not handle that? Why can't Sun provide installation instructions someplace where they can be found? Well, do I have to UNinstall Java and redo it with a different path, or what? I would appreciate any help from those who have figured out these initial hurdles.
Note to Sun: Forte is a far better name than Studio 4!dont install java sdk in pgm files or any folder with space in its name.i install jdk in the default directory which is c:\jdk1.4 something.while installing forte it'll detect ur jdk and no prblm.and about why it cant be installed in dir with spaces u have to report it to sun ;)
