Solaris 8 02/02 Scrolling

We have an application that provides a circuit diagram window that is scrollable. We have a diagram that is large and has many crossing lines. This app works fine with Solaris 8 10/01on our Sun Blade 100. When we install Solaris 8 02/02, scrolling this diagram causes the app to terminate and returns us the login window. Any known problems with the 02/02 version? Has anyone else experienced problems in the graphics area?

Power on the system and while the "Initilizing Memory \ " is going hit STOP-A. once this drops you to an ok prompt then enter boot cdrom.

  • Solaris 9 & JTable Scrolling

    Hi,
I've got an application that runs fine on Windows and earlier Solaris versions, but has a problem on Solaris 9. The application has a JTable in a JScrollPane that displays dynamically captured data. In Solaris 9, the table is not repainting properly when scrolling up/down by a row or page. The old information is not erased before writing the new information, so it becomes a big garbled mess when scrolling. When the block is grabbed with the mouse and moved, the table is repainted properly.
Has anyone seen this? Any ideas for workarounds?

    many thanks for your test!
I need to install it in the next couple of weeks so I will keep this issue in mind.
Perhaps you can let the BU to update the ReadMe with this information - otherwise it could result in some frustration when installing it on solaris 9...:-)

  • Installation problems with Solaris 8 on Intel

    Howdy,
I am having some problem with my installation of Solaris 8 on Intel. I am installing the system on a P133 (Asus TX97 motherboard). When I first start the installation and perform the system scan I get the following error:
The PnP ISA: IDE Controller programable device was unable to be programmed.
This could be caused by two possible reasons:
    - Lack of resouces available
    - There is a conflict with the following already-existing device: 8086,7111 - Bus Mastering IDE Controller
When I bring up the View/Edit device settings and I scroll to the IDE controller there is an ! mark beside the PCI IDE controller. The controler is specifying: Bus 0, device: 1, function: 1 port 1F0-1F7, 3F6, 170-177, 376, E000-E00F, 0 IRQ 14, 15
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this conflict? I tried removing the PCI IDE interface and then installing a ISA IDE interfact (for IRQ: 14, IRQ 15 automatically put a PnP IDE controller there). This seemed to resolve the conflict but then I received a: No Bootable devices have been found.
If anyone can help out with how to resolve the conflict, or what the No Bootable Devices have been found error it would be greatly appreciated.
Currently there is a partition set up with NT on it, but I wish to basically get rid of everything on the HD and install Solaris on it. FYI, when I check the HD's in NT it mentions I/0: 1F0-1F7 IRQ 14 and also I/O 170-177 IRQ 15.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
    Regards,
    S.

When I close down Solais in the CDE I am taken back to the logon screen
and I turn the PC off.Don't do that. If you simply turn off the PC, the OS has no chance to
write back cached / modified disk data back to the HDD - this is also the
reason why solaris has to check the filesystems on the next boot and apparently
    has to repair filesystem defects.
What you have to do is shutdown the machine, before you can power it off.
Login as user "root" and use the command
    init 5
    or
    halt
"init 5" will shutdown system services, by executing commands from
/etc/rc0.d/K* with argument "stop". Then it'll sync all modified disk blocks to
the HDD, kills all remaining processes and unmounts all filesystems. In this
state it's safe to power off the machine!
"halt" is a quick-and-dirty shutdown. It does not stop system services (the
/etc/rc0.d/K* commands are not run). But, it syncs all modified disk blocks
to the HDD, kills all processes and unmounts all filesystems. "init 5" is preferred,
especially if you have services like a database server running on the machine,
which needs to be cleanly shutdown. On the other hand, with a default solaris
installation and no extra services, a simple "halt" should be OK.
Btw. if multiple users are logged in on the machine, you should also have a look
at the shutdown(1M) command. "shutdown" sends warnings to the logged in
users that the machine is about to be shut down, ...

  • No scrolling when viewing man pages with Gnome terminal?

    Hi all,
I have just installed Oracle Solaris 11 on x86. For a long time I've used Solaris 9 on SPARC. I like the new OS, but I'm having a problem viewing man pages with Gnome terminal. When I view a long man page, e.g., "man newfs", I don't get a functional scroll bar on the right hand side of the window. And although the space bar works to advance the page, when I reach the end, it doesn't return to the command prompt. It just beeps, prints "END", and I can only exit by closing the window. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Chris Tidy

It does sound like you're using "less" instead of more. When you see the "(END)" prompt you can simply type "q" and it will exit back to the command line prompt making it unnecessary to close the window. See the "less" manual page for more detail on the less command. Under Solaris 9 the paging was done with the "more" command. If you set the PAGER environment variiable to "more" the man page will use more and revert to the behavior you'd be used to with Solaris 9. Less erases the text you've already read when you type that final "q" which is a behavior I don't like. I didn't bother to determine if there is a way to fix that with less, I just went back to more. The choice between "more" and "less" is a personal preference.

  • Can't install Solaris 10 Express on my AMD64 Laptop!

I was all excited to try out the latest and greatest Solaris OS and so I downloaded all the ISO's and burned them twice (made a mistake the first time around), and then rebooted my computer with the bios settings set to boot from CD.
At first it seemed to load the installer fine; but then again, I wouldn't really be able to tell since I'm a Pro Windows user, but a Noob in everything else. But it scrolled some very normal linux looking text on the left side of the screen and then gave me four options for how i wanted to install.
Here's where the problem occurs. Regardless of which choice I make the installation crashes and reboots (restarts) my laptop. I've searched the web, and these forums thoroughly looking for an adequate source of community support but it seems that there's not much of a community developed yet...and hence no one able to help me out.
So I have no idea what I'd need to do to get Solaris running. Frankly I don't care if it's running in 32bit or 64bit mode, as long as it runs.
    My system:
    AMD64 3400+ Mobility
    2GB DDR Memory
ATi Mobility Radeo 9700 Pro w/128mb Ram
60GB Hard Drive (running at 7200 rpm)
    DVD/CDRW Drive (writes @ 24x)
802.11g/b Build-in (Atheros chipset, Gigabyte distributor)
    (3) Usb slots
    Multi-format Card Reader
Infared Communicator (I don't care of this works or not)
    S-Video In/Out
    A/V Coax In/Out
    Serial Port
    Additional Monitor Port
    Parallel Port
On-board 56k Modem (don't care if this works or not)
    Firewire
VIA 8235 Onboard Sound (Realtek AC97')
    VIA K8T400 Chipset-based Motherboard
I appreciate any help anyone can provide!

Please accept my apologies for hyjacking your thread.

Q to Nullvision: Assume the version you installed was b72 for X86 ? )
    Richard,
Thanks for your reply. I was not looking for Athlon support, but indeed wanted to know if it works.
I'm aware that this Solaris Express is still a work (of art) in progress, but before asking Santa (= my wallet) for a new MoBo, I wanted to have this so called gray area demistyfied.
As you say, by default, solaris will boot/install 64 bit, regardless of the type of AMD64 processor used !
Therefore the bootstring earlier reported could have helped someone to get his machine booting, but is in a normal situation not needed by default.
So thanks to Sun and Santa, we might be running X86 64-bit Solaris next year. I started with S10 b48 in the beginning of this year on X86 32 bit, followed by Sparc 64. What will be the next step, Solaris on HP machines or AIX? We will see !

  • Oracle 8.1.5 & Solaris 8

    Hi,

This will not work. We have not built the native libraries to work with
    Solaris on Intel..
I suggest trying the platform independent type 4 JDBC driver available for
free from Oracle. It is supported (as is any JDBC driver) with WebLogic
    Server. To download it:
Go to http://www.oracle.com and select the "Download" option.
From the resulting page, use the "Select Utility or Driver" dropdown to
    select Oracle JDBC drivers
From the resulting page, scroll down a little (since SQLJ stuff appears at
    the top).
    Or, to go directly there:

  • Installing Solaris as a guest OS on VirtualBox-1.6.0

I am using VirtualBox-1.6.0 as my VM on an AMD ATHLON 1800+ with 1GB RAM running Fedora 9 (uname -r = 2.6.25.3-18.fc9.i686). My first attempt to install Solaris was with Solaris10 11/06, while the second attempt was with Solaris10 05/08.
Solaris10 11/06: 1. Default screen resolution created a window too long with the bottom off screen.
Is there a recommended resolution when the host screen resolution is 1440x900?
    2. Guest Additions failed to install properly
What is the appropriate method for installing the Guest Additions for Solaris?
Solaris10 05/08: 1. Install hangs when installing as a networked system at system 77% initialized prior to the actual install.
    2. Install hangs when installing as a non-networked system when system is at 100% complete and about to reboot. I manually powered off the VM
unmounted the DVD image and then restarted the VM. When it rebooted, it complained that there wasn't a system on the hard drive.
In both installs, I went with the default config of the VM (512MB RAM, 8MB Video RAM, creating a dynamic virtual disk starting at 20GB limit), and the install media were iso's, 11/06 5 CD iso files and 05/08 1 DVD iso file.
    TIA

Just redid the install of Solaris10 11/06 and this time I was able to change the size of the window so that it is within my desktop. I am running 32 bit apps as my AMD processor is only 32 bit, also I originally went with the CDE desktop and later switched to JDE. I was also able to install the Guest Additions for Solaris this time without any errors using pkgadd from the cli. I haven't retried the 05/08 version yet, but will post when I do. One thing in common with 11/06 and OpenSolaris.200805 is that the audio on my system does not work on either VM VBox 1.6.0. It reports that it cannot find any compatible device. It also complains about the UART device, although I don't have Serial Ports enabled. Also does anyone know how to tell VBoxSvr what host name to use with each VM?
    Fri. 27 June 2008
    I was able to install Solaris10u5 (05/2008) on VMware Server using 684MB of RAM and 20GB HDD. I did not have the tools addition for Solaris, I'm not even sure if there is such an animal, so I had to "Scroll the desktop" to maneuver around. I then tried it again on VirtualBox 1.6.2, got through the initial install setting RAM to 684MB, default Video no Serial ports or USB, although parts were painfully slow. I was not able to do the first reboot, it just sat there saying that it was doing system initialization and the indicator just kept on going back and forth. After about 20 min. I shutoff the VM giving up. Also I still can't get sound to work on either the older Solaris10 or OpenSolaris. In OpenSolaris the DDU indicates that 2 drivers are missing;
Audio; Intel 82801AA AC'97 Audio Controller
    Other; ACPI AC Device
Anyone know if and when VBox or OpenSolaris will have these drivers?

  • Creating a warning banner at the login screen in solaris 10 GNOME

Does anyone know how to create a a warning banner at the login screen in solaris 10 GNOME so users have to hit OK or Enter before typing in their username?
    A million thanks,
    Johnny Mac

I have had problems after the 10.5.2 update. I ended up with a frozen computer - unable to restart or shut down etc. Also ended up at one stage with Set Up Assistant screen. With the help of a computer savvy friend, at least I am able to use my computer again.
It appears the actual download did happen but it did not install and the computer tells me I need to "re-start". When I did this, window appeared on plain blue screen saying it was installing software but absolutely nothing happened - no blue scrolling bar etc.
My iMac computer is still under Apple Care Plan and technician told me they are many problems surfacing across the various machines with this upgrade. He has asked me to delay updating the software and to ring back in a couple of days because their technicians are currently working on the problem and he hopes for an answer soon.

  • Solaris 10 on 280R with A1000

We have loaded solaris 10 ( 3/05) on our server i.e. Sunfire 280R with A1000 storage connected to it thru SCSI cable. We have addon SCSI card installed in server. Our A1000 is having only one controller.
    Afterthat we have loaded sun storage RAID Manager 6.22 software to configure A1000 , we have made slices using RAID 5 & using RM6 utility. While rebooting the server we are getting following two errors & keeps scrolling on screen for about 10 minutes , though we are able to access A1000;
    1. Warning : mod_load : cannot load module 'rdriver'
    2. /kernel/drv/spark9/rdriver:undefined symbol 'dev_get_dev_info'
Is any solution to above errors? Is any patch / upgrade / firmware etc for above errors ?
Will it recommended to upgrade to solaris 10 or continue with solaris 9. we are using this as a database server with oracle 10G.

FYI, I think Sun discontinued support for the A1000 h/w in Solaris 10... should be documented.
I only mention this in case you want to have Sun support help you... if it works fine, I generally wouldn't worry. But it is a production system, I might have second thoughts about using Solaris 10 with unsupported h/w.
    My $.02, YMMV.

  • Help with Video Card Install on Solaris 8

I have a video card with nvidia4 chipset. After installing solaris 8 on my system I get a screen that is too big to fit on the monitor, so I have to scroll down to see everything. Plus it displays 16 colors. I tried to install the FreeBSD drivers that are availble on the nvidia site but could not run "make" command. Anyone know how to solve this?

    There are two options:
    1. Install the latest Solaris 8 x86 video driver patch109401-14
    available at:
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patches/xprod-Solaris_x86IntelDrivers&nav=pub-patches
This may add native support for your nvidia chipset. If it doesn't,
then you have the option to try the new VESA driver which is
included with this patch as well - the VESA driver is supposed to work
on all cards that have the necessary VESA support bios routines.
    2. Install the "Solaris XFree86 Video Drivers and Porting Kit"
    http://soldc.sun.com/developer/support/driver/tools/video/video-index.html
It adds support for many video cards by using XFree 4.2.0 video
driver modules. It also includes another variant of the VESA driver.

Trying to install Sol 8 on Compaq Presario 5610, w Pnt2 and 64 mb RAM. Installation proceeds to a point, then aborts and re-boots again from Install CD. Can not get out of this loop.
After the start of "Solaris WebStart Installation" see "configuring /dev and /devices", then fast scroll of what appears as memory loading. Next get "syncing file system . . . done", new line "skipping system dump - no dump device configured" and "rebooting" back to another boot from Install disc ?
Have been sucessuful installing SuSE Linux 7.3 along with Win 98 on this configuration. Any ideas ?

OK, First make sure PnP OS is set to no in the BIOS. Also, knowing Compaq as I do - make sure your BIOS are the latest and greatest. Download the latest DCA diskette image and use it to boot. Does the system find the partition you want to load and start the install? If I remember correctly, the Solaris boot partition MUST be a primary partition so use fdisk or the NT/W2k disk manager to check the partitions. When the Device Config Assistant (DCA) program runs take a look at the list of devices found. Delete the devices that the system cannot fully identify at that time - these may be soundcards, NICs or modems. Let me know what happens then.
