Solaris 9 Beta

When is the public Solaris 9 beta (x86 version) going to be released? I would be interested in testing it. Please reply directly to me <[email protected]> (as well as the list, others may be interested). Thanks a lot.

I noticed there is a Solaris 9 DCA diskette available for download but I have been unsuccessful finding the binaries... I also would like to do some testing with it when I am able to get my hands on it.

  • New Zones features in Solaris 10 Beta 5

Solaris 10 Beta 5 (otherwise known as Software Express 7/04) should be
available shortly via the download link
    http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/solaris-express/get.html
For more information on what's available in the release, please see the
    already posted documentation
    http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/817-0547
There are some new Zones features in this release that folks might be
    interested in
    * Command line editing and history for zonecfg(1M)
With support from the the libtecla(3LIB) library, zonecfg(1M) now has
command line editing and history support which should help in creating
    and/or modifying a zone's configuration.
    * Configuring UFS, UDFS, HSFS and PCFS file systems through zonecfg(1M)
Starting with this release, users can specify ufs, udfs(7FS), hsfs(7FS)
and pcfs(7D) file systems as part of the zone's configuration. For
example, if /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s7 is a block device that you want to
dedicate to a zone under the name /mydata, it can be added as follows:
    # zonecfg -z myzone
    zonecfg:myzone> add fs
    zonecfg:myzone:fs> set dir=/mydata
    zonecfg:myzone:fs> set special=/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s7
    zonecfg:myzone:fs> set raw=/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s7
    zonecfg:myzone:fs> set type=ufs
    zonecfg:myzone:fs> end
    zonecfg:myzone> commit
    zonecfg:myzone> ^D
This file system will automatically get mounted under the name /mydata
inside the zone when it is booted or made "ready".
    * NFSv4 client support for Zones
Zones can now be NFSv4 clients although in this release the default is
to begin negotiating as NFSv3 clients. To configure a zone to
    negotiate NFSv4, the NFS_CLIENT_VERSMAX parameter in /etc/default/nfs
should be uncommented and set to "4".
    * The new -z and -Z options to ps(1)
The new -z option can be used to select only processes in the given
list of zones. For example, the command "ps -z twilight,16,myzone"
will print those processes from the zones with the names "twilight",
    "myzone" and the zoneid 16.
The -Z option automatically adds a ZONE field to the existing reports
    as the first column.
The Zones team would appreciate hearing feedback from our customers on
these new features and any other Zones issues or questions that you
    might have.

In the README file for the 07/04 release it says that there's a problem with some 64bit runtime libraries missing from the SUNWlibC package. I'm a bit unsure about where to download this package from. Do you have the link to the page it is refering too???

  • Solaris 10 beta 7 boot problem; stops after loading mmu32 module

    Hi,
I'm having a problem getting beta 7 to boot on my system, using boot -v it appears to hang right after the mmu32 module is loaded.
Is there a more detailed debug option I can use on the boot line to track down more precisely where the hang is occuring?
Solaris WAS booting intermittedly for a while, ran DAMN WELL TOO!
Hardware is a VIA CM266 motherboard, Via 1GHz C3 CPU. Solaris is installed on partition 2; NetBSD on 0, Fedora Core 3 on 1. I'm using grub but that doesn't seem to change behavior; booting off the Solaris install CD will hang in about the same place as well.
    Any info/pointers/debugging hints appreciated!

    Hello,
Thanks for the informative post. I am trying to install Solaris 10 on an Athlon system. All works fine except for the nic card.
Can you provide info on what nic card your system uses?
The built in nic on my system is a Sis900 and i have not been able to locate a driver.
I tried installing a Linksys Gigabit card (EG1032). Linksys supports Solaris drivers, but not Solaris 10. (I tried the Solaris 9 driver but it would not install. The error message said 32 bit drivers could not be installed in a 64 bit kernel)
    Thanks in advance.

  • Umount not possible on Solaris 10

    Hello,
This afternoon, I asked for support on Sun Support Center for a problem which occurs on a new Solaris 10 installation.
Problems on Solaris 10 are not supported by Sun Support Center ... :-(
    (I think a umount problem is not a Solaris 10 problem , but ...)
It's not a critical problem but I'm frustrated if I must reboot for this problem.
We are not under Microsoft OS ...
Sun Support Center asked me to try on Sun Developer site.
    Can you help me ?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
This will depend on how your VM is configured, please have a look at the following documentation and make sure you are using the appropriate networking mode:
    https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch06.html#networkingmodes
Then check your # ifconfig -a output and verify that your interface is marked UP and RUNNING, please refer to the following document for more details on how to set up your network interfaces:

  • Solaris Management Console Server Problems

When I try to run Solaris Management Console, I get an error saying that the server is not running on port 898. I have followed the instructions on hte FAQ. I see no instances of smcboot running in the processes. When I run /etc/init.d/init.wbem start it returns to the prompt with no additional information. When I then run /etc/init.d/init.wbem status - it says the server is not running. Anyone have any ideas ... this is driving me nuts. I have gone so far as executing smcwbemserver by hand, and it returns "smcwbemserver [7]: /lib/functions: not found"
Does ANYONE have any ideas (faint sobbing sounds in the background...)

I've got the same problem on b63 aswell if I start wbem manually I get no error (infact I don't get anything) and the server just dies. Also had the same thing on a previous Solaris 10 beta and through trial and error found it to be /etc/resolv.conf misconfigured. Unfortunately I can't quite remember what I done to fix it , if I remember I'll post back.

  • Buggy pkgrm in Solaris 10

Maybe out of topic, but I had this problem when trying to remove a pkg from a Zone. So I tried the same command in the global zone, and It had the same effect.
We just had a Package named "wd" working on Solaris 7,8 and 9. It istalled nicely on 10, but when I made a pkgrm wd, the result was a little unexpected:
Among a lot of files also these ones go removed:
    /kernel/drv/sparcv9/profile
    /kernel/drv/sparcv9/lockstat
    /kernel/drv/sparcv9/fbt
    /kernel/drv/sparcv9/fasttrap
    /kernel/drv/sparcv9/dtrace
    /kernel/drv/sparcv9/dcam1394
    /kernel/drv/sparcv9 <non-empty directory not removed>
    /kernel/drv/sdt.conf
    /kernel/drv/profile.conf
    /kernel/drv/lockstat.conf
    /kernel/drv/fbt.conf
    /kernel/drv/fasttrap.conf
    /kernel/drv/dtrace.conf
    /kernel/drv <non-empty directory not removed>
    /kernel <non-empty directory not removed>
    /etc/rcS.d/K10dtlogin
    /etc/rcS.d <non-empty directory not removed>
    /etc/rc3.d <non-empty directory not removed>
    /etc/rc2.d/S99dtlogin
    /etc/rc2.d/S89bdconfig
    /etc/rc2.d <non-empty directory not removed>
    /etc/rc1.d/K10dtlogin
    /etc/rc1.d <non-empty directory not removed>
    /etc/rc0.d/K10dtlogin
I suppose that there is a Bug in pkgrm, since also part of SUNWdhcsr got removed:
I think that should be easy to reproduce. You just need to dreate a pkg called wd, and try to install and deinstall it on Solaris 10.

Sorry for not beeing so precise. I do not know how to file a bug report, because I have Solaris Express for non commercial use. If you let me know how, I could file a bug repport:
I have this problem with Solaris 10 beta 51 and 54. The Version I use now, which also has the Bug is:
    cat /etc/release
    Solaris 10 s10_54 SPARC
Copyright 2004 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
    Assembled 01 March 2004
I have also a problem with mountall in Zones, which is probably also a Bug. Where should I report this one?

  • Performance hit in audio playback in Solaris 10

    Hi,
I've noticed while trying out the Solaris 10 beta 72 that the audio playback quality took a major hit since Solaris 9. I was hoping that this would go away in the Solaris 10 release, but it's not the case.
If I try to play an .mp3 file with mpg123 or even audioplay an .au file, there are regular clicks in the playback, audible about twice per second. Booting into Solaris 9, the audio playback is perfect.
My intuition tells me that the integration of DTrace into the kernel is the culprit, but of course, I have no proof. Can anyone think of a way to test this theory? Can DTrace be disabled? Maybe DTrace can be used to figure out what's going on?

  • Java serialization is slow in Solaris 10

    Hi,
I'm think to migrate from Linux to Solaris 10, because of the better support for Java any many other things, but in the first test the java web application, we get a too slower response in Solaris, with a time of 03 minutes and 12 seconds for one transaction, but this same transaction using Linux on same hardware and database the transaction concludes in 4 seconds, I think that this maybe a misconfiguration on Solaris.
In this application, all transaction are via JavaBean serialization over HTTP using an Applet that serializes/deserializes objects to a Servlet, seeing the tcp trace of http requests, after the server receives this requests, we get a pattern of 15 seconds to reply for every request.
Then, maybe a mistake of TCP configuration in Solaris? or Java Applet Serialization to Servlet is slow in Solaris?
Exists a best way to install Solaris for better performance with Java?
Thanks for any help or ideas
    Clvis

I obtained a T1000 on the 60 day try and buy with solaris 10. I've installed my java application on it. On start up the first thing the application does is de-serialize a huge java object.
On my laptop (winXP single drive) this takes about 40 seconds.
On the T1000 (single drive c0t0d0 <SUN80G cyl 65533 alt 2 hd 16 sec 149) it takes about 12 minutes. The application is identical.
The java version on my laptop is 1.5.0_6
The java version on my T1000 is 1.5.0_10
I've doubled check to make sure the read and write cache is enabled on the disk.
This is a major problem for me. Any ideas? The T1000 is doing nothing else. It is 100% idle before I start the java application.
My application runs loads of threads and so I was hoping to get excellent performance which I haven't tested yet. However with a start up time of 12 minutes this is a no go straight away.
I understand it is more to do with the disc and solaris 10, but can anyone explain to me why my laptop should be so much faster?>

  • Mouse in Solaris 10

I have a 2 Way Manual Monitor / Keyboard / Mouse Switch Box which is connected to a Solaris 10 box & a Windows box. Since I installed Solaris 10 beta 69 on the box whenever I switch to an existing Gnome session using the switch box, the mouse no longer responds, the cursor just sits there. The keyboard is fine however. In order to get the cursor to respond I have to restart the x server with Ctrk+Alt+Bkspace, which is very irritating if I have multiple sesssions open. I did not encounter this issue with earlier builds of Solaris 9/10. This problem persists with Java Desktop in the FCS version of Solaris 10 also.
I would be grateful if anyone could advise me on a possible solution to this minor but very irritating issue.
    Cheers,
    Conor

That's bad luck. I tried that combination on my kvm and I couldn't get it to work. Fortunately it also has a USB port and that's how I was able to make it just removing the USB to PS/2 converter. I guess that you don't have a USB port to try in your KVM, right?

  • Solaris 10 on P4R800-V

    Hi!
I had Solaris 10 beta build 72 running on a P4R800-V. It has onboard ATI graphics (128MB). Solaris installed with a resolution of 800 x 600 far below the TFTs optimum 1280 x 1024, so not particularly fun to read from.
This latest Solaris release is even worse than the beta. It installs the desktop at 640 x 480 and the GUI provides no options to increase it. 640 x 480 is the only resolution listed.
I need to determine if the situation can at all be improved for my board, and if so, a step-by-step for the configuration of properly recognised graphics.
Any hints or links welcome, Thanks!

This is a style 2 DLS provider, and it appears that DL_INFO_REQ fails, leading to ifconfig coming out with an error "No such interface".

My company is porting a network traffic-monitoring application to Solaris. We would like to use the Solaris "DLPI" interface to receive packets for analysis. However, my understanding is that DLPI will only provide incoming packets addressed to the local machine. In order to receive outgoing packets also, I understand that DLPI requires that the application place the network interface in promiscuous mode, which we are loathe to do for efficiency reasons. I am hoping that I'm incorrect about this; is there a way in Solaris 7 or 8 to use the DLPI interface to receive both incoming packets addressed to the local machine and also outgoing packets from the local machine? Thank you.

how can i install mouse drivers
secondly- there are no audio drivvers as well
    - there is no internet connection
    - it totally skipped the step to ask me if i was using dhcp!!
    please help

    Hi,
    1. For the sound problem. you have to download and install driver for your sound card. Search using your sound card or sound device name and solaris for the driver. you can also try the following sites if your requirement matches.
    Solaris Audio Drivers 1.0

    2. Mouse problem: I don't think that problem is for optical mouse. Because I use optical mouse smoothly.
It can be easily solved by configuring Xorg. Solaris uses 2 GUI system. Xsun and Xorg. Xsun is the default one. But Xorg comes with some extended features.
to configure Xorg go to terminal and type kdmconfig. Then the Xorg configaration starts. It asks you about your system, resolution, keyboard, mouse etc. Answer those questions properly and save and exit. After restart it works.
REMEMBER: after configuration and before reboot check if the keyboard is setup in US language by typing- gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf . then see in input device > core keyboard section.
if it is not "us", then edit and make the Option "XkbLayout" " "us"
    I think it helps.
