Sole Admin.

OK, after a couple of months I am about to give up one of my G3s and assume possession of my wife's G4. When I originally set it up, I gave both of us Admin Rights but when I log in, I cannot make any changes. I have both the original CDs that came with the G4, plus a full retail copy of OS 10.4. I have had the logic board replaced and would like remove her and make it mine. I know you folks are full of suggestions and that there are a couple of options, which one should I take. Erase and Install or Archive and Pray? Thank you for your consideration. Wayne Loney

Thank you for the response. I have spent the afternoon getting files transferred etc. and, Duh, realized I had to log in to get to my admin privileges. That only got me so far, however. I have dragged her folder from the "User" folder to the trash, entered my password, entered her password, but she is persistent and always shows up in the HD users folder. The worst part is when I restart the G4 it opens to her page, with nothing on it, and I have to go to my log in page. Thanks again, Wa( .y. )ne

  • How do I swap admin privileges between two accounts?

The original, first account on my computer is, naturally, an admin account. I normally operate in this account. How do I create a new account that becomes the sole admin, and change the original, first account to an ordinary user account? The reason for this (security is the motivation) is that I want to still use all the folders and files owned by the account that is currently admin. If I just create a new non-admin account, when logged in as the new user I have no access to my old Library, Music folder, Pictures folder, Keychains, etc. I don't want to duplicate the existing admin user folder and double its hard drive footprint. Is there a simple way to just make the current admin account a plain user and the new account the admin?

Yes! I just did this for the same reason. Create the new account and in System Preferences/Accounts/Security check the box at the bottom to "Allow user to administer this computer". At this point both accounts are "admin" accounts.
[I had the same problem with not being able to access some, but not all, of the folders in the original account. When logged into the original account, I went through each folder that I had no access to when running the new account and changed permissions in the Get Info window and selected "Apply to enclosed items...". to allow the new account access. (BTW, There is an Apple Tech note that says "Apply to enclosed items..." doesn't work for owners or groups.) I ran Repair Permissions many times and changed group permissions on some folders that were "admin" group. I ran Disk Repair. And after many times doing the same thing over and over, suddenly I had access to the original account folders from the new account.]
Now log into the original account and select the original account in the accounts window and then Security. Now deselect the "Allow user to administer this computer" box. This means that to administer the computer you now must be logged into the new account.
I'm still not sure which of the things I did actually made things work, but now I can access the original account files from the new account.
    Good luck!

  • Finder permissions messed up?

I've got a MBP and running Lion 10.7.2.  My wife has a MB and running the same.
A while ago I played around with 'file sharing' in system prefs on both computers (I wanted to access her computer from mine and vice versa) and allowed my user account access to her 'desktop' folder, then I applied these privileges to 'all enclosed items' a while back. I've learned there's a better way to allow access to each others computers and now just log in as each other's admin account for any file sharing we want to do to each other's computer.
I now am the only user account on my computer (admin), and the same for her on hers.
However, when I'm logged in on my MBP, Finder is now asking me for password now for any action I do to a folder.  If I want to move a folder, it asks me to enter a password.  If I want to delete a folder, same thing. It never use to do this.  The even stranger thing is that on some 'older' folders, if I want to move them to another folder, it COPIES them automatically, rather then moving it entirely.  This is not, obviously, what I want, and I have no idea what has happened.  New folders I create, there isn't a problem.  It's almost as if, when I was adding my wife as a user account on my computer a while ago and giving her permission to access my desktop (and all enclosed items) it created some kind of weird permissions issue.
The same thing is happening on her MB too.
We've deleted all user accounts on the computers (except, obviously, for the sole admin account).
I've verified and repaired permissions and nothing works.
Does anybody have any idea what has a) happened, and b) how to fix this?
    Thank you!

It's almost as if, when I was adding my wife as a user account on my computer a while ago and giving her permission to access my desktop (and all enclosed items) it created some kind of weird permissions issue.
Yes. I think what happened is probably due to the fact that the Desktop folder normally carries an "everyone deny delete" ACL, meant to protect it from accidental deletion. ACLs are special types of permissions that do not show up in GetInfo, but can be revealed using Terminal.
    In my system:
    Computer:~ t1$ ls -lde ~/Desktop
    drwx------+ 9 t1  staff  306 Nov  4 11:09 /Users/t1/Desktop
    0: group:everyone deny delete
Such ACLs  can get propagated if you click "Apply to Enclosed Items" on a folder that carries them. Affected subfolders and files  that acquire  that ACL would then require password authentication to move or delete them.
If you used "Apply to enclosed items" only on the Desktop folder (and not the entire Home folder), then I think the following Terminal command (copy and paste it) should remove such extraneous ACLs:
    chmod -RN ~/Desktop/*

  • Permission query.

I went to replace a utility that needed to be updated (the printer repair utility) but when I dropped it into the app folder it wouldn't let me replace it because I didn't have permission. It did not ask for authentication!
I know I could change the permission of the single app trash it then drop the new app in. But I wanted to sort this problem out once and for all.
The permissions on the repair utility were owner: unknown Group: Admin.
Some other apps like photoshop are owner: System Group: admin.
I changed the permissions on the Application folder to owner: System Group: Admin But when I checked 'apply to enclosed items' it said I didn't have permission even though I'm an admin user.
    So I have two questions.
One. Can I use terminal (read: what is the full terminal command) to force all the permissions and ownership in the app folder to be Owner: me, Group: Admin then do a repair permissions to change all the system apps back to Owner: system.
Two. Is there any problem if all the my own installed apps in the app folder are set to Owner: system Group Admin.
I'm the only user of the computer.
    emac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    What does 'DU' mean.
My plan was to make all the permissions in the app folder to be 777 and the owner to be user and the group to be admin, then I was going to do a repair permissions to return all the System apps back to their normal permissions thus leaving all my own apps with me as the owner.
I could do all this by hand one app at a time but there are 124 to go through. I was hoping there was a terminal command to do this.
The reason the permissions are screwed is that this computer was once mine but it is now my wifes and she is the sole admin. I'm just wanting to make all the permissions to be what they would have been if she was the original owner and installed all the extra apps herself.

  • Macbook Password Problems

A little bit confusing?   As I went to log in, it asked for the password to the account(Jeff Wit {w/ admin priv.}).  While there is a password hint, it is providing a hint to the password, which I believe was a hint to an older password, never updated.  I have gone through in the Owner account, and deleted the loging password keychain files (which is what i want to suggest the help files suggested doing), and it did not remove the passwording.  No help.  I tried accesing the file by "get info"ing" the Jeff file on the "C" drive, to change its attrib., but when I changed them from a root account, its characteristics were not changed and my files still unavailable.  Any possible solutions gryffindor?

I got access to the files by removing admin priv. from my own account from the other admin acct "owner", leavng "owner" as sole admin.  Changed "Jeff's" home folder attributes from"jeff" and "everyone" to include "owner".  Why "everyone" doesn't give all admin's control is a big ? for me.  I did a reset after removing root from "jeff" usting the master password, and rebooted.  The help files aren't exactly clear on this process.
Thanks for the help in advance!

  • Documents edited by multiple users reverting changes to previous versions

    Hi All,
I've got a problem where multiple users are working with the same network-stored file (but not simultaneously) wherein one makes edits and saves their changes. Later, that same file does not reflect the changes--it has reverted to some prior version of the
file. Sometimes the changes are a day old, sometimes they're a few days old. I have no idea why this is happening or how to troubleshoot the problem. Anyone?
(Note: It doesn't happen to every file, and it doesn't happen every time.)

    Hi,
Based on your description, did you mean that this issue occurred when you edit a Document in a SharePoint Document
Library? Or just edit files which store in a shared location?
Just files stored in a shared location.

I've got a problem where multiple users are working with the same network-stored file (but not simultaneously) wherein one makes edits and saves their changes.
Would you please let me confirm whether get any error message when you edit and save changes in that file?
Meanwhile, please check if same issue occurred when just use one administrator account (no other account) to edit and save this
    network-stored file.
There are no error messages. The file saves normally and silently. I will test with a sole admin account
    today and report back.
In addition, would you please let me know the file type? Were all .txt files or .docx files? Please check if
this issue still occurred in other file types.
They are docx files only (so far--that's all we've noticed).
By the way, would you please let us know more details of the server environment where this issue occurred?
It's a SBS2011 Essentials server. The files are stored on a shared drive accessible to a couple different
user groups. What else would you like to know?
If anything I misunderstand or any update, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
    Hope this helps.

  • New, Wrong User On Start Up. How to Change?

I recently did a clean install of Yosemite on my mid 2012 Macbook Pro.  I used migration assistant and a super duper clone of my pervious set up.
I created a new user in the Yosemite setup. This is now primary and is an automatic boot option on start up (with the new load bar).  I have to log out out of this user to log back in to my old name where all my stuff is.  I don't need this new user.
How do I make my old user the primary and sole admin for the machine and boot up?
    Thanks

    See migration assistant
I had the same problem, although I migrated from the original boot disk conected externally via USB
By disabling Filevault all accounts now show on the first startup. I Understand that the account created for installation could be deleted now and Filevault enabled again if desired, but I will leave everything 'as is' for a while until I'm totally sure everything is ok and I have a good new backup

  • Where is "md5" command sol10x86 thanks

this should be an eay one for sol admins...
i'm new to solaris and having trouble finding md5 command
    please advise
    kind regards
    phil

Solaris doesn't have the md5 command, so if you're looking to setup checksums for files and such then you could look into "sum(1)" and "cksum(1)" commands, or simply use 'bart(1)' to generate a full batch of file checksums.
However, I think you're looking for the "digest(1)" command. First see if it supports md5 by using "digest -l" and then you can use it. Another option is to grab the md5 tool from an older Solaris version or even Sun Freeware.

On solaris 9, you might want to look at /usr/sbin/directoryserver this might help you.

  • I cannot log in to my admin account.

I am the primary user of my MacBook Air and the sole administrator of the computer. When I opened my MacBook Air this morning, I was unable to log in to my account because the computer rejects my admin password. This password is the only one I have ever used on this computer. It has never been changed.
I hope someone can help solve this problem because I cannot get past the login screen.
    Thanks!

Okay, I was asking the question for Mom. Turns out she had the 'caps lock' button on the whole time she was trying to enter her password, thus the inability to log in. Doh!
All is now fixed. Thank you!
(And if anyone knows how to delete a question once it has been posted to the forum, I sure would like to know how to do that.)

  • Admin server/ config DB

Finally moving to 5.2 and I 'm setting up MM and 2 consumers. I'm having it all configurations stored into 1 config instance but I'll have it failover to the other master if the one confi instance is down w/. and Alteon. I used to in 5.1 have config instance on each server. My question is ... Sun recommends this but what do others do. Do you have your config DB included in your default instance on each server or do you try to just have one config db where they all sit?
My other question is... Do you have an Admin server running on all servers or do you just have it on your masters since thats where your config sits.

Years ago while running the older Netscape/iPlanet 4.0 series Directory server, I has configured all of my production Directory servers to use a single instance of the admin server (and hence, the same config db) located on the sole master. This was fine until we had a hardware failure and for lengthy reasons could not recover the admin server. Thus, I had to rebuild the entire production env from scratch. This was not fun and since then, I've made sure that every single directory server in our env uses it's only local config db and admin server.
Like others, I'm currently building a new Directory implementation using the Sun JES 5.2 Director Server and am wondering if I should go back to a single config db/admin server instance for my entire production directory cluster. I'm very reluctant to do this as our need for truly High-Availability Directory Cluster is a MUST. I cannot have the loss or corruption of a admin server effect my entire production env.
Does anybody else with strong HA Directory requirements have any thoughts on this issue?
Certainly, I like idea of having a single Admin server instance but then I'm very reluctant to put all my "eggs in one basket", so to speak.

  • Forgot admin. password will not let me in have to use guest. how do I get my admin. PASSWOE]RD/

LOCK OUT FORGOT ADMIN. PASSWORD HELP?

Its probably too late for you, but just in case..
You may not be aware that all late Windows OS have a hidden admin called Administrator which is only visible in Safe Mode. (Ever wondered why you can't call yourself "Administrator" - now you know!)  It is used by maintenance people.
To solve your problem, boot in Safe Mode.  Log in as "Administrator" - it has no password.  Now you can reset the password, or delete and re-instate your normal (visible) admin.
By the way, you said you can only log in as Guest.  If you always log in as admin, be aware that this is bad practice.  It gives you much more access than you need for normal tasks, and along with that the ability to corrupt or destroy vital software, including the OS!
If you are the administrator or sole user of a computer, you should have two login names - one for admin, and another for all other uses set up as a normal user (no privileges), preferably with a different password.
Use that admin login only for those things that need it - installing new programs, updates, etc.
