I've followed the instructions in the Wiki exactly, but I can't get a Compiz entry to show up in the list in GDM. Can anyone help?

    Solved.
    I had to enable KMS
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … Setting.29
    and remove my xorg.conf file.

  • [Solved] xfce4+compiz: conky can only been seen if I miminzed windows?

    I have xfce4 and compiz-xfce4 installed with my Arch Linux?
    I added conky in my auto start-up setting. It turns out conky can only be seen if I minimize all windows.
    When I clicked the "show desktop" button in my xfce4-pannel, conky just cannot show up.
    Thanks,
    (pls kindly see my another question about xfce4+compiz as well: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=177106)

    Solved
    It turns out I have to uncheck the "Hide Skip Taskbar Windows" option under  "General Options"  in Compiz configuration settings manager.

  • [SOLVED] AutoStarting Compiz

    I got Arch running, following the beginners guide on the wiki, got Gnome up, and installed Compiz. I followed the Autostart (no Fusion-icon) instructions, but then realized that because I have an Intel 945 graphics chip that I need a complex command to run Compiz.
    The problem is that the vanilla compiz command (per the wiki) is still active, and every time I login I have no title bars and some other odd behavior. When I run the proper command everything is fine, but I'd like to solve this problem.
    Here's what I've tried:
    I made a script to run the command and put it in the startup applications. I suspect it's working for a second (my mouse theme comes up for just a bit) before the desktop fully loads, but for all I know it's not running properly. The script runs from the terminal fine manually.
    I tried editing the "Exec=compiz" in /usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop specified in the wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Com … on.22.29_2) to the proper command, but no change.
    I also tried to undo the gconftool commands (on the wiki) by changing the "compiz"s to "metacity"s. This had no visible effect.
    I would greatly appreciate any help in troubleshooting this, as I'm not sure where the problem is coming from, but  I suspect the bad compiz autostart overriding my startup script. I tried adding a "sleep" to the start of the script, but no dice. My google-fu is coming up empty, and I didn't see any relevant posts on the forum here.

    just edit /usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop
    and replace the line
    Exec=compiz
    with
    Exec=compiz ccp
    that did it for me (same chipset)...
    for the record, now with intel graphics, you are forced to use UXA and thus, there are no extra options needed (indirect rendering or else...)

    Solved my own problem....
    After a day of poking around and thinking about the error message I figured there is a socket is left open or being used somewhere  and pulseaudio does not know how to handle this. I found a socket file in /tmp/.esd-UID/socket that I rm'd.
    Rebooted my laptop and logged into my Gnome desktop and there is now sound.
    Furthermore I removed the line in /etc/pulse/default.pa that loads module-esound-protocol and have not ran in to any issues.

  • [SOLVED] Can't get GDM to run - what am I doing wrong?

    Alright, I'm running a fresh, up to date install of Arch in a virtual machine, and I'm consistently unable to get GDM to work properly. I pretty much followed the beginners' guide, and tried reinstalling from scratch several times. I've installed gdm, gnome, gnome-extra, dbus, and anything else the wiki recommends, like virtualbox-archlinux-additions. I edited /etc/inittab and /etc/rc.conf accordingly.
    Relevant lines in /etc/inittab:
    #Boot to X11
    id:5:initdefault:
    x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon
    Relevant lines in /etc/rc.conf:
    MODULES=(vboxguest vboxsf vboxvideo)
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus network crond)
    When I start the virtual machine, it displays the CLI login interface along with a bunch of warnings:

    After that, I can still log in just fine, though I obviously never get into any desktop environment because of it. I have no idea where to find the X server log. I skimmed through /var/log, but couldn't find any log file with remotely helpful contents besides 'gdm'. The contents of the 'gdm' file:
    ** (gdm-binary:519): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager
    ** (gdm-binary:519): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out
    I've been bashing my head against this problem for several days now, but been unable to actually fix it. Anyone feel like pointing out what I'm doing wrong or how to proceed?

    Aaaand figured it out thanks to that one. I skipped starting it manually in this VM; got it to work when started manually on a previous install, and hence assumed it'd be fine.
    Turns out, I was doing the installations of the base packages - # pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils - wrong somehow. I think I must've missed that step or something; installing xorg-server and xorg-server-utils through Pacman just now solved my problem.
    Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.
    EDIT: Wonder, you ninja you.

  • [SOLVED] Adding users with command prompt

    I'm doing as the beginers guide says for adding non-sudo users to my installation. I'm using
    adduser
    to do this. For the bash bit is pressing enter to just have /bin/bash, which I assume is default ok? I also pressed enter to have default for user ID. The longer way around it had this as an example:
    useradd -m -G users,audio,lp,optical,storage,video,wheel,power -s /bin/bash archie
    I'm looking in particular at the /bin/bash archie bit at the end. Do I leave it or make sure it's got the name of the user at the end e.g. in my case
    /bin/bash ben
    ? It's just when I tried to do that the first time It gave me some message about it not being there.

  • [SOLVED] Adding layouts and changing them per application

    Hi
    I have just installed openbox not a long ago, and I was wondering,
    how can I add another keyboard layout? (Hebrew for example)
    I heard that I can do it through xorg.conf, but then, changing layouts
    will be globaly and not per application.
    How can I add another layout to my openbox and change layout with
    alt+shift per application?
    Thanks

    Problem solved thanks to DHeart!
    I created /etc/hal/fdi/10-keymap.fdi:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <!-- -*- SGML -*- -->
    <deviceinfo version="0.2">
    <device>
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keymap">
    <append key="info.callouts.add" type="strlist">hal-setup-keymap</append>

    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys">
    <merge key="input.xkb.rules" type="string">base</merge>
    <!-- If we're using Linux, we use evdev by default (falling back to
    keyboard otherwise). -->
    <merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">keyboard</merge>
    <match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name"
    string="Linux">
    <merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">evdev</merge>

    <merge key="input.xkb.Options" type="string">grp:ctrl_shift_toggle</merge>

    I installed xxkb, and added "exec xxkb &" to my openbox's autostart script.
    And it works almost perfect!

  • [SOLVED] Gnome + Compiz troubles

    Hi!
    Since a couple of "yaourt -Syu" ago I've noticed that Compiz freezes Gnome. I mean, I can move the mouse and switch (Ctrl+Alt+F1) to a console (in order to kill gdm), but any other input to the desktop environment doesn't  work, e.g. can't move, resize, close windows, input any text, launch new apps, etc.
    If I kill gdm and login to Gnome again it runs without a window manager and there I can launch metacity or openbox and run without problems. But the moment I run fusion-icon it freezes again. So, it's compiz related.
    Any clues???
    Thanx
    Edit: PC is Athlon XP2 with Nvidia 7200 graphic card, proprietary drivers.
    Last edited by pendor (2011-04-16 00:51:07)

    While running gnome with metacity, you could try issuing '/usr/bin/compiz ccp --replace' from a terminal and watch for any errors printed.
    If you are using gdm you should also have an ~/.xsession-errors file, maybe it contains useful messages.
    If you started having this problem simply after a package upgrade then check /var/log/pacman.log and see what was upgraded recently. Pay attention to relevant packages ( xorg or compiz or nvidia drivers or gnome...) and maybe try to downgrade. Hopefully you can remember the date you started having the problem and can then identify which of these packages was upgraded that day by checking pacman.log.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME 3.16 + GDM Login & Background Image

    It's being surprisingly difficult to understand what's needed in order to have a login screen that does not contain the default noise PNG as background.
    Apparently now the default theme is a gresource so common css overwrite don't seem to make it.
    How did you folks solved this problem?
    Apologies if already discussed, it's just that the problem is NOT the GNOME Desktop Background, and NOT the lock screen, just ONLY the gdm background screen during login.
    Other tricks seem to not work neither:
    sudo -u gdm dbus-launch gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver picture-uri '/new/picture.png'
    Thanks for any sort of help with this and Best Regards

    I finally got this to work. The wiki needs updating as of now it only states that gnome shell theme is now in a binary format, but not how to extract and repack it afterwards...
    Anyway this is how i got it to work.
    Use this script to extract gnome-shell-theme inside your choosen working directory
    extractgst.sh
    #! /bin/sh
    #change workdir to suit your system
    workdir=/home/merlin/temp/GS/test
    gst=/usr/share/gnome-shell/gnome-shell-theme.gresource
    mkdir theme
    for r in `gresource list $gst`; do
    gresource extract $gst $r >$workdir${r/#\/org\/gnome\/shell/}
    done
    Once you've run the script you should have the theme extracted to the theme folder which was created inside your workdir.
    Now you can proceed to add a background image to this folder and edit gnome-shell.css by following the wiki page.
    You must now create the file gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml inside the theme directory. Simply copy paste the xml code below into  gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml,  making sure to change the line that refers to your background image. On my system the background image is named login-background.jpg
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <gresources>
    <gresource prefix="/org/gnome/shell/theme">
    <file>calendar-arrow-left.svg</file>
    <file>calendar-arrow-right.svg</file>
    <file>calendar-today.svg</file>
    <file>checkbox-focused.svg</file>
    <file>checkbox-off-focused.svg</file>
    <file>checkbox-off.svg</file>
    <file>checkbox.svg</file>
    <file>close-window.svg</file>
    <file>close.svg</file>
    <file>corner-ripple-ltr.png</file>
    <file>corner-ripple-rtl.png</file>
    <file>dash-placeholder.svg</file>
    <file>filter-selected-ltr.svg</file>
    <file>filter-selected-rtl.svg</file>
    <file>gnome-shell.css</file>
    <file>gnome-shell-high-contrast.css</file>
    <file>logged-in-indicator.svg</file>
    <file>login-background.jpg</file>
    <file>more-results.svg</file>
    <file>no-events.svg</file>
    <file>no-notifications.svg</file>
    <file>noise-texture.png</file>
    <file>page-indicator-active.svg</file>
    <file>page-indicator-inactive.svg</file>
    <file>page-indicator-checked.svg</file>
    <file>page-indicator-hover.svg</file>
    <file>process-working.svg</file>
    <file>running-indicator.svg</file>
    <file>source-button-border.svg</file>
    <file>summary-counter.svg</file>
    <file>toggle-off-us.svg</file>
    <file>toggle-off-intl.svg</file>
    <file>toggle-on-us.svg</file>
    <file>toggle-on-intl.svg</file>
    <file>ws-switch-arrow-up.png</file>
    <file>ws-switch-arrow-down.png</file>
    </gresource>
    </gresources>
    now the only thing left to do is to run
    cd ./theme
    glib-compile-resources gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml
    It will create a gresource file that you can swap in /usr/share/gnome-shell.
    Good luck and hopefully I will save many some headache. Took me quite a while to get the whole thing working

  • [Solved] Adding Printer Marks to a Pages document in Acrobat

    By "Printer Marks" I mean "bleeds" and "crop marks".
    A bleed is the area of the paper that will be trimmed off after the job is printed.
    Crop marks indicate the exact place where the paper is to be trimmed.
    Background:
    I normally do programming and web development, but, after having spent about three hours fiddling around tryng to transform our Pages-made brochure into something to send to commercial printers, I thought I'd record the process so as not to waste so much time on the next occasion we do something similar.
    I thought I'd share this with other Pages users because Pages has no native support for Printer Marks and PDF files contain this as metadata, so a commercial printer will expect this to be properly set up. I believe their printers may even read the PDF metadata.
    Required:
    Pages and Acrobat Pro. (I have Pages '09 and Acrobat 9 Pro - updated from the one originally distributed with Adobe CS3)
    Recipe:
    Set up a custom page size in Pages.
    e.g. For an A4 sheet size (210 x 297 mm), the Pages "Page Setup" should specify 220 x 307 mm allowing for a 5mm bleed all round.
    'Print' the document to 'Adobe Acrobat PDF' (which, for me, automatically opens up Acrobat Pro 9)
    In Acrobat, go to: Advanced >> Print Production >> Crop Pages
    The excellent article at http://www.prepressure.com/pdf/basics/page_boxes explains the Acrobat box model and points out that  PDF files will embed this important info for the printer:
    The Trimbox  (defining the intended dimensions of the finished page): e.g. A4
    the BleedBox and the MediaBox which are e.g. 5mm bigger all round the A4 sheet and will contain the Printer Marks.
    So: You only need to edit the margins of the Trimbox on "All Pages". Acrobat will add the Printer Marks outside the TrimBox.
    Ensure no other margins are accidentally edited.
    The MediaBox is the imported page size and is not editable in the Crop Pages dialog
    The  Bleedbox you wil most likely want to be the same as the Mediabox so won't need editing. Ensure it's 0,0,0,0.
    The TrimBox is editable - and should be edited - here (e.g. add 5mm 'margins' all round to allow for the bleed.)
    Click OK: Now if you specified margins for the CropBox …. but why would you? ... but this may be default Acrobat behaviour! .. you will have cropped out the screen area where the Printer Marks will be displayed.
    Go to Advanced >> Print Production >> Add Printer Marks
    I didn't check "All Marks" because I had a spurious Registration? "capstan" added in the middle of a page on one occasion. I checked Trim Marks, Bleed Marks and Color Bars. … on "All Pages".
    Click OK; Command+S to save file.
    Good to go!

    Use the Add Printer Marks tool:

  • Solved: Adding CommandButtons to a page with templates VM

    Hi,
    I am trying to add a button on a page generated with JHeadStart. The first I did was drag and drop it from the "Data Control Palete" but the button was lost when the pages was regenerated. So I maked a VM template to generate the page with that button, the problem that when the page is generate the button is on the page, but there is no reference on the XXXXPageDef.xml file, so the button is not working.
    How can I create a template to generate the button on page and on the XXXXPageDex.xml?
    Thanks

    Tony,
    Drag and drop the button again, this will re-add the action binding in the page definition. Then, before generating again, uncheck the group-level checkbox "Clear Page Definition Before Generating", this will preserve your manually added action binding in the page definition.

  • [SOLVED]Emerald/compiz draws window decoration around conky...

    Hi! I've recently installed conky for the first time ever and wish to use it as a simple clock. I have edited the .conkyrc to achieve this, however when I start conky, compiz draws the emerald theme around my conky clock.
    Having looked around the web, a common suggestion seems to be to add:
    !(name=conky)
    To my Window Decoration Window Matching config (it's usually set to "Any") in order to exclude conky from having window decorations drawn. Unfortuntely, this doesn't work.
    Another suggestion was to add "-conky" to "Any", giving me:
    any -conky
    However, this removes window decorations from ALL windows.
    Here is my conky config:

    So,

    Actually, if what you want is the ability to lock the screen you don't have to enable gdm.
    Just add "gnome-screensaver &" to your .xinitrc (before "exec gnome-session").
    The lock screen this way is rather shabby, but better than nothing.
