[SOLVED] All applications lost their data

Hi, today I started my computer, logged in with the same user as usual, but all the data of the applications are gone. My chromium lost its passwords, thunderbird lost the accounts, KDE lost all my panels and settings. Every file in my home folder is still there though.
Someone has an idea on what this could be?
Thanks already!

If the files are still there and not broken (e.g. because of bugs/damage) maybe the file and dir permissions were somehow changed (to another user account or something) and the current user is not allowed to read the files in the thunderbird directory (for example).
Check the owner and permissions of the files and dirs with (for example)
ls -alnd ~/.thunderbird
and compare them to the UID of your logged in user account:
id
[EDIT]
As illusionist wrote, maybe check the permissions and owner of "~/.config" too, I don't know for sure where apps store their settings these days.

  • [SOLVED] All applications lost in Arch Linux Gnome.

All installed softwares are not accessible even through terminal
I am not sure where I made the mistake. But the Gnome application menue was empty in my system. I was installing cairo dock when this happened.
I added the following lines in /etc/pacman.conf
    [archlinuxfr]
    Server = http://repo.archlinux.fr/$arch/
    and run
    $ sudo pacman -Syy yaourt
This made some error saying some signature issue. And roll backed the installation.
When I restarted my system I was in the shell not in Gnome. I installed gnome again by using pacman. It did not download the packages again from the repo, but installed it.
Now I can open gnome but all installed softwares are not accessible even through terminal

  • Apple Developer Center lost their data between 7/16 to 7/18

First, I'm korean so please understand my english is so poor.
in 07/18/2013, apple developer center server had down and opened after 1 week.
but when i checked my account after server up, it has lost data betwwn 7/16~7/18 (KST)
so i guess Developer Center has broken at 7/18, and Apple restored from 7/16 backup.
and my second account, which is registered and paid at 07/17 is back to normal account, not developer account.
but apple doesn't tell us.... *****
I think much people should know this.
please check your account and your UDID and Certicifates are okay.
    from http://www.clien.net/cs2/bbs/board.php?bo_table=park&wr_id=22994681&page=2&sca=& sfl=&stx=&spt=0&page=2&comment_page=1&cwin=#c_22995577

Make a note of the settings for all your Mail accounts -- everything you'd need to reconstruct the settings from scratch. Quit Mail. Move the following items in your home folder to the Desktop:
    Library/Caches/com.apple.mail
    Library/Mail
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist
Relaunch Mail. It will behave as if you were setting it up for the first time. Go through the setup process with one of your accounts, using the information you noted earlier. Test. You may need to import one or more of your mailboxes from the Desktop in order to do that. Does Mail still crash?
If so, quit Mail again and put back the items you moved (replacing the ones that may have been created in their places.) Download the 10.6.8 combo updater and apply it. Try again.

  • All applications lost after a 4.2 upgrade

    Hi,
I have lost all my installed applications after an upgrade to ios 4.2. Does anybody know how to recovern them?

Go to the App Store and do exactly what you did when you got the apps the first time. You will not be charged again.

  • Many videos from iPhone that were in iPhoto no longer work and all have lost their thumbnails. It won't let me import videos at all now.

After installing Yosemite many of the videos I had in iPhoto won't play at all. All the videos (including missing ones) now have dashes around a thumbnail shape instead of the thumbnails that were there. When I click on the thumbnail shape of any of the ones it won't play it says "The operation couldn't be completed (OSStatus error -54.)"  These are videos that were there in Mavericks before I installed Yosemite and worked fine then.  Also now I am unable to import any videos from my iPhone or my desktop, even ones that it took before. It says the file is an unrecognized format.
What I want to know is - is this on purpose?  Did Apple suddenly withdraw all support for videos in iPhoto and in the process destroy the ones that were there or is something wrong with my system? Do other people see thumbnails and are able to play videos and import new ones in iPhoto in Yosemite? I wouldn't be surprised if something is wrong with my system since after upgrading to Yosemite ALL the thousands of carefully organized songs in my iTunes playlists were missing and I don't think that was on purpose but the fact that I can't import new videos makes me think this is on purpose.
If this is on purpose, if iPhoto on Yosemite is really no longer able to take videos what can I use instead?   In iPhoto my many videos were organized into folders and subfolders and sub-sub folders.  I can't do that in iTunes and also can't adjust thumbnail size in iTunes so videos take up way too much space there. Any suggestions on third party programs that will let me organize videos into folders and subfolders, etc and see thumbnails at small sizes?  I just need to be able to organize the videos and click them to play.

    THANK YOU!
I noticed this morning a lot of the thumbnails were back that weren't there last night.  It must have very slowly been bringing them back, but the videos that would not play at all were still not working and there were still quite a few without thumbnails.  I followed your suggestion and I'm amazed! That actually fixed everything!  Now all the thumbnails are back, the videos that wouldn't play at all now work fine, and iPhoto let me import the videos that it wouldn't last night .  I hope it stays like that but at least I know what to do if this happens again, if I dare to install any updates.
What does holding down the option key with launching the program do?  I might need to use this again or with other programs.
    Liz

  • Lost all application and file icons and more

Today i discovered that for some reason i could not drag files around on the desktop or moving them between folders. I used restarted the mac - nothing changed. I used OnyX to run all the maintenance tasks, repair prefs, clean caches, optimize system, etc... Onyx asked for system restart - which i did and now i have more problems than before.
after restart all the files on my desktop lost the application associations (ie icon changed from PDF icon to blank paper with folded corner). I opened the Applications folder to find that all the applications lost their correct icons and are now represented by a blue folder - all native osx applications, mail, safari, etc... as well as third-party apps. the only one that kept its icon correctly was Adobe Acrobat 7.0.
Dock lost all it's correct application icons and now just show folders and some gray question marks. Finder and Trash bin still have correct icons. Everything else is wrong. Question marked apps won;t open from dock... (these are mail, safari, and sherlock)
If i click on an application from applications folder (safari for example) it opens fine and does what it is supposed to do. Most other apps seem to still function.
Also stil have problem that files still could not be dragged around or moved around in Finder.
I'm running 10.2.8 on a G4 1.25dp tower that has been very stable for a long time. I have no idea what happened or how to fix.
Please help if you can.. thanks!!
    G4 DP1.25   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I gave up fighting to figure out what was wrong with OS X. I just repartitioned the harddrive after backing up and re-installed the OS an applications.

  • Apps don't have access to their data anymore

Yesterday, to be able to follow evolution in the size of my Applications folder, I decided to add its actual size (4.5 GB) to the name "Applications".
It did not take very long before I realized I had made a big mistake. All my apps were behaving as if I were using them for the very first time. They were all empty of their data. I then renamed the folder to its original name "Applications". But that did not change anything.
What gives me hope that this problem can be solved is that I can see in different Libraries that the data is still there. For instance, the folder Home>Library>Caches>Metadata is filled with hundreds of icalevents. And if I click File>Get info, I can see the title of the event and its due date. But iCal remains empty as an application.
There must be a way to enable my applications to get back to their data, but I don't know how to do that.
Will someone please help me here? All my emails are gone from Mail, all my photos are not in iPhoto anymore etc...
Please, help me if you know how... I'm lost and frustrated.
    Thank you!

Do you have a recent backup copy of your boot drive? If so, your best bet is to recover the apps folder from your backup copy.

  • Solved: PC Suite changes messages date to date of ...

Yesterday I wanted to copy all of my messages from my Nokia 6267 phone to my computer. I have a folder for inbox and outbox, and all of my previuosly copied messages are saved as "[first 32 characters of the message].vmg". I opened Nokia PC Suite 7.1 and clicked on "messages", which opened the designated software of contacts, messages and calendar managing. The problem was, when I tried to copy (ctrl+c) and paste (ctrl+v) the files to another folder in my PC, all of the messages lost their date and time, and got the current date and time. Also, their filenames changed to "[original date and time of send].vmg". I could not find away to prevent this from happening, and when I tried to use explorer to explore the phone, the only folder that appeared in "nokia phone browser" was my gallery. I couldn't find help on the internet. I was sure I did this process before, as I had the old messages. I decided to try an older version of pc suite. Luckilly I kept the installer of the 6.8 version, so I removed 7.1, installed 6.8 and the problem was solved! Apparently the phone browser of version 6 allows you to view the deep contents of your phone, while 7 do not, and instead uses other built-in programs to do so.

I guess I am not 100% sure. I just opened PC Suite and checked manage connections and then settings and saw nothing labled manual or automatic. What I do to connect to the internet in PC Suite is connect my phone with the cabe, open PC Suite and then click on the globe to make the connection. Does that help you of should I check something else? Thanks, Greg

  • IPad upgrade to iOS 6 lost apps/data

I have just upgraded my iPad 2 to iOS 6.0.1. I backed it up beforehand, but the upgrade has lost virtually all the applications, and their data as well as the music (which I backed up manually beforehand). Is there any way to recover this?

  • Unchecking "Sync Applications" removes all applications from Touch

Is there a way to prevent this? Not a big deal necessarily.
I have my applications on my Touch that I use. When I plug it in to my comp, it goes through the sync process, and having a very slow computer, this takes awhile sometimes. So I want to stop the applications from auto syncing.
When I uncheck "Sync Applications" it says "all existing applications and their data will be removed from your iPod." That's pretty annoying if you ask me.
I want to uncheck "Sync" but I don't want to remove my applications. Is there a way?

    Thank you for the welcome.
I'm guessing the syncing applications are all updated, so that's why it's trying to sync them.
The reason it's probably slow is an old, old computer being pushed to its limit. P3, 1 GHz (I upgraded the CPU, originally it was 800 MHz). I have a 2.0 USB card install that I'm using, but I'm not convinced it's quality. The computer is just stressed doing anything, much less 2 things at a time.
I imagine if I upgraded my computer this issue wouldn't bother me much.
    Thank you for the reply.

You get one and only one download of audiobooks.  As always it is your responsibility to back up your content.

  • Lost the ability to spell check on all applications

I recently updated my system to Mavericks 10.9.4, since then I have lost the ability for spell checking in all applications. Check spelling while I type is not working and I am unable to check spelling manually through the app menus. Skype, Facebook, Notepad.. you name it, spelling correction functionality is no bueno. Has anyone ever heard of this? I have tried changing languages, booting in safe mode... the only thing I did notice was that the box to check "correct spelling automatically" won't stay checked, but clearly something else is wrong.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Why files in Lightroom mobile and files in the creative cloud not the same? idea- one place(stored date) for all application ??????

Lightroom Mobile is not a cloud storage service. You shouldn't treat it as a way of backing up your files. You are merely storing Smart Previews of your files in the cloud space, high-quality JPEGs of your files regardless of their original format on your desktop. The point is that they are there so you can continue editing them in a Lightroom-like environment even while away from your desktop/laptop computer. The files in Lightroom Mobile can only be used in Lightroom Mobile.
This is very different from what is offered by the Creative Cloud storage, which can be used to synchronize your files between any device (that can support the individual files).
The vast difference in how each service works and its intended use is why they are separate.

Your profile says you have 10.6, so why bother with the original 10.5 OS?
But to your question, before you erase anything, make a backup of your data for safe keeping and restoration. Having an external hard drive for this purpose is most useful.

There is no need to do that, I had the same problem pal! Just do this and all should be fine!
Delete one of the app's and re-install it, then for some reason everythign is restored to as it was!
Hope you get on fine, let me know!
