[Solved] Arch (0.7.1) and vmware - pacman network trouble?

I've installed Arch 0.7.1 using VMware on Windows XP to test it (only the base system so far, mostly due to my problem: I can ping hosts, even arch mirrors, but when I do an 'pacman -Sy' it just stalls at 0% downloading/syncing 'current' package database.
Any suggestions?

Do you have winderz firewall running?
Are you using a vmware 'bridged' network connection, or a vmware 'nat' network connection?
- No Windows Firewall, but my router is also a firewall, but it allows "all" outbound.
- I'm using bridged network. I can ping the vmware host (windows xp) from arch inside vmware (and internet sites such as ftp.heanet.ie (one of the mirrors) and www.vg.no etc.
I've commented out every repo in /etc/pacman.d/current except for ftp.heanet.ie (which I can ping from arch), but it just stalls. I'm on a 2Mbit SDSL connection btw.
If I just let it stall (if that's what it does) for a while, it restarts or something. At least the
current [ ] 0% 0K 0.0K/s 00:00:00
line repeats, at 0%.
I also disabled extra (community and testing was already disabled) in pacman.conf and tried a 'pacman -S lftp'. It stalls just like with sync-refresh, trying to download expat package (which was a dependency for lftp).
I had no problem downloading the file from the same location from windows (ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.archlin … pkg.tar.gz).

  • [SOLVED] Arch linux won't boot after pacman -Syu

So yesterday I upgraded the packages on my system along with installing steam.
There was one conflicting package but I don't remember exactly what it was (something containing usb?). I just hit Y to continue but in retrospect maybe should have investigated more.
Now when I start my system it gets up to "Started Accounts Service" and then the rest of the output is on a single line as if the newline characters aren't being printed. It stays like this for around 30 seconds before my graphics cards fans max out and then it reboots the system.
Any help debugging this would be appreciated.

  • [SOLVED]Arch Linux, and Windows 8.1 Dual Boot issue

Hi guys. I recently bought a new laptop, and decided to run Arch Linux and Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 first as recommended by the beginners guide, and then installed Arch Linux. I made sure UEFI was enabled in my BIOS, and made sure everything was on a GPT partition. The install itself went fine. My laptop loads grub, and Arch Linux shows up and boots, but there is no option to boot into Windows 8.1. The only way I can boot into Windows 8.1 is by accessing my motherboard, and choosing to launch the windows boot manager instead of the grub launcher. How can I get Windows 8.1 to show up in grub? Thanks in advance guys.

Yeah just ran this after installing os prober
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
and it works now. Sorry for the crazy posts guys. Thanks for the suggestions and help.
Yeah I'm sure I'm doing something wrong lol. I did not install OS-Prober. I think that's where the issue is. I'm missing the menu entry in grub.cfg right? Do I just run os prober or do I have to manually edit grub.cfg.
If that's not the case then here is what I did up until now. What I did was start with a blank SSD drive. I used cgdisk to make the disk use a GPT partitioning scheme. I installed windows 8.1 and checked in windows to make sure it boots into UEFI-GPT mode and it does.  I then installed arch linux using the beginners guide. I made sure to use cgdisk to create any extra partitions, and installed GRUB to the efi partition that windows had created ( I did not format this partition ). I then finished the installation and rebooted, and Grub only shows arch linux. I don't think I'm dealing with anything MBR related. I made sure I used the GPT partitioning scheme....i think lol.
All you need to do is run os-prober then run grub-mkconfig. It should pick up Windows at that point.

  • [SOLVED] How to get sudo and kdesu to honor my user password?

    Hi folks,
Well, I must be missing something. I think I've tried everything listed here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=143487 and in the referenced links, but I still have the problem of my system rejecting my password for some uses of sudo and kdesu but not others.  I've included my /etc/sudoers file below.
My problem may be due to screwing around with users:  I started out using bruce (1000), then switched to bbraley (1001), then deleted bruce in kusers, then changed bbraley to 1000. When that created more problems without solving the original one, I switched back to 1001.  I've played with adding and removing my user from groups, including creating a sudo group, making sure I am a member of wheel group, etc.
What seemed to be everyone's magic fix,
    pacman -S pambase
didn't work when I tried it successfully with my bbraley password, then later, when that began failing, using the root password. pambase reinstalls, but there is no resulting change in the behavior of sudo.
Side question: Most of my experience is with kubuntu in which I never created a root user and never had any trouble having my user password work with sudo or kdesu. Is there a reason Archwiki beginners guide suggests assigning a separate root account and password?
    Can anyone help?
    Here's the output of

I had never used it, either, but I misread some reference and thought it might help. Since you say it causes the behaviour I'm trying to eliminate, I will get rid of it, as suggested. However, the behavior preceded my addition of this line in the file, so I don't think this will correct the problem. Edit: Removing it kept the root password from being universally required (I can now edit /etc/sudoers using my user password) and returned it to requiring it sometimes (I still need the root password to use kdesu).
As for some other distro not having a root account, that is simply impossible.  There was a root account.  If you didn't have the password for it, then that installation was severely crippled.
Sorry, you're right. I should have said that kubuntu does not expect users to assign a password to the root account and instead expects primary users to access that account's privileges via su, sudo, or kdesu only.
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo
By default, the root account password is locked in Ubuntu. This means that you cannot login as root directly or use the su command to become the root user. However, since the root account physically exists it is still possible to run programs with root-level privileges. This is where sudo comes in - it allows authorized users (normally "Administrative" users; for further information please refer to AddUsersHowto) to run certain programs as root without having to know the root password.
Thanks for responding to my request for help. Any other ideas?
Edit:  Here's what I keep getting that only accepts the root password, not my user password

  • [SOLVED]Arch Linux / UEFI / BTRFS using Grub2 & Windows 8 in a 2nd HDD

    PROBLEM:
    ====================================================================================
    Dear fellas
I just purchased an new HP TouchSmart 17.3" laptop that comes with Windows 8.1 pro (1 tb HDD + small SSD for cache only ) and still have space for one more HDD or SSD.
I Google a lot and read a lot but many questions emerged since seems that no one has the same scenario (maybe I pick the wrong choices) like me.
The problem is.. I didn't wish to re-install Windows 8.1 since it came with from factory.. so I purchased a 750 gb hdd and put it into the free slot to install Arch Linux in a different HDD.
As I am not familiar with UEFI what I did was to reorder the hdds. I just put the Windows HDD as second disk and the new disk (For Arch Linux) as primary and changed into Bios from UEFI to compatibility mode and installed Arch Linux into the primary one.
I reaaaally need help to add to grub the correct "path" to Windows 8.1 disk that came with UEFI..
    Anyone could please help me?
    Thanks in advance!
    ====================================================================================
    SOLUTION:
A huge thanks to @TheSaint and other users for their help and assistance!
    More sources:
    http://www.kossboss.com/linux---arch-in … -grub-boot
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=METZCp_JCec#t=146
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1390741
    Step by Step Summary:
Use gdisk to create partitions on /dev/sda:
        - 512MB - EF02 type partition (for EFI boot)
        - 690GB - Linux partition for the BTRFS.
    - Create an EF00 (ESP) with 512mb
    - Create a Linux System partition with the rest of space
Make the FAT 32 system for EFI boot:
    # mkfs.vfat -F32 /dev/sda1
Make the BTRFS partition. If it complains about existing filesystems just add a "-f":
    # mkfs.btrfs -L arch -f /dev/sda2
We will make out a root subvolume for sda1, this will be a folder called root located at the root of sda2. The way we will design this is that When the system boots we will not see /root, we will be inside root. Inside root you will have all of your etc, sys, proc, whatever folders etc.
    # mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
    # cd /mnt
    # btrfs subvolume create /mnt/root
This should show you your root
    # btrfs subvolume list -a /mnt
Something like this: ID 256 gen 5 top level 5 path root
    # cd /
    # umount /dev/sda2
Now we will mount sda2 root subvolume as /mnt and we will dump the arch system into there with pacman. We will also enable compress to utilize btrfs compress feature.
    # mount -o defaults,compress=lzo,subvol=root /dev/sda2 /mnt
NOTE: the command "mount" will not show which subvolume is mounted, to see how subvolumes are mounted you need to look inside proc (cat /proc/self/mountinfo):
    # cat /proc/self/mountinfo | egrep sda2
The line for the mount of sda2 looks like this:
    43 21 0:34 /root /mnt rw,relatime shared:30 - btrfs /dev/sda2 rw,compress=zlib,ssd,space_cache
We can see that the subvolume /root is mounted to /mnt from the device /dev/sda3
Notice how with regular mount command its missing:
    # mount | egrep sda2
    /dev/sda3 on /mnt type btrfs (rw,relatime,compress=zlib,ssd,space_cache)
Pacman will dump stuff into a boot folder, so we better mount our sda1 EFI boot partition to it. Or else all of the boot stuff will go to sda3 instead of sda1:
    # cd /
    # pacstrap -i /mnt base base-devel
Let us create the directory and mount the EFI partition
    # cd /mnt
    # mkdir -p /mnt/boot/efi
    # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi
    Let us generate the FSTAB:
    # genfstab -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
Let us chroot into the arch installation:
    # arch-chroot /mnt /bin/bash
    Change password:
    # passwd
Then pick the right one like this and associate it with a link to /etc/localtime
    # ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Pacific /etc/localtime
Let us generate the initial RAM disk
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
Let us setup the bootloader (GRUB)
    # pacman -Syu grub efibootmgr
Let us generate the grub configuration
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Let us install grub into the HDD
    # grub-install /dev/sda
    # umount -R /mnt
    # umount /mnt
    # reboot
From this step you can go straight and forward with the https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_guide

TheSaint wrote:As UEFI BIOS is a boot loader itself. You should make on each HDD an ESP.
When you want to start win8 you go to BIOS and chose its entry, so will do for Arch the same.
For this way I suggest you write to boot the kernel directly from the BIOS. It just take some reading on this topic
Other option you set on you second ESP the boot loader of your liking and it will try to find win8 partition.
    Thanks for your reply.
For the second option, may I use the compatibility mode and install the booloader into the first partition along with Arch?
Or in case the first option is still the better option, could you pleaaaase give me some directions from the scratch? Do you have Google Hangout?
    Thanks in advance.

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux Duke (2007) Fails to Boot

Folks, I have a unique and challenging problem that has exhausted my Arch Linux skills, and so I am now turning to you.
I have a vintage Pentium Pro 200 system (that’s 200 MHz folks! – 200 MHz 686 architecture – the original 686!), two CPUs, running a dual boot between Windows NT 4.0 and Arch Linux Duke (2007). It has 512 MB of RAM and a 120 GB hard drive, partitioned up between Windows NT and Linux. I built this system new in 2007, hence the dated version of Arch.  It has run like a charm all these years, granted not getting that much use. After about a year of no use at all, I fired the system up last week to help with a little research for a blog post I was writing on networking Windows NT 4.0 and Mac OS 8.6. Windows NT 4.0 fired right up with no issue, and after I was done testing what needed to be tested I tried to boot over to Arch.
After a year of disuse, Arch unexpectedly and stubbornly refused to boot. The boot process started up just fine, but towards the end, it declared that it could not mount the root file system on the root device and took a kernel panic and stopped. My Arch skills have gotten a bit rusty in the last few years, but I dusted them off and went to work. My guess was a file system or superblock error. Arch wouldn’t boot, but I dragged out my trusty RIPLinux 2.9 Rescue Live CD and fired it up. It came right up and ran, and I was able to mount the Arch partition and view all the files… everything seemed to be there; it just wouldn’t boot. Windows NT 4.0 AND RIPLinux both boot and run on the machine, so the hardware is fine as well.
A little information on the disk layout. Windows NT 4.0 is in the first partition on the hard drive. The extended partition has a second Windows NT 4.0 partition (sort of a /home partition for Windows NT 4.0), followed by the main Arch partition (the one I am trying to boot), followed by a swap partition and then the largest partition, which I use to share data between Arch and Windows NT 4.0 (I have loaded an ext2/3 driver into Windows NT 4.0 and it happily accesses the Linux partitions on the box).
RIPLinux’s e2fsck did find some issues with the Arch partition and I had it repair them all. I checked again afterwards that all the files were still there, and they were. With the partition now known to be clean, and the superblock repaired from one of the backups, all should have been well. However, Arch still wouldn’t (and still won’t) boot.
RIPLinux has a kind of a chain loader function, so I had it attempt to start up Arch for me. However, this was flummoxed by the fact that Arch addresses all my hard drive partitions as /dev/sdax and RIPLinux addresses them as /dev/hdax. Hence, without a common language, it was hard to get the one to start the other. Still, using this function, I have been able to get a crippled version of Arch running on the machine again. No modules had been loaded, and so it couldn’t do almost anything, but there it was (and is), Arch Linux Duke, at the CLI level. From there, I can see all the files, I can move freely in and out of my user account and the root account, but I can’t make the thing actually boot properly.
If you have read this far, you are a trooper.  Summarizing what I know, the hardware is good, the file system is clean, the superblock is good, I can mount it cleanly from a live CD and I can chain load a crippled version of Arch. Here is the boot process blow-by-blow. When I try to do a normal boot, the Windows NT 4.0 loader passes control to the Lilo boot sector I have placed on hda1 (sda1 in Duke’s parlance). Lilo takes over, present a menu and when I select Duke, takes off. Arch Linux Duke starts to boot. It gets a good long way along, all the way along to:
    :: Loading udev events                [Pass]
    :: Mount root Read-only
    :: Checking file systems
    This is where it stops.
The next thing I see is:
    /dev/sda6
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else) then the superblock is corrupt and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
        E2fsck –b 8193 <device>
I then get a sort of character based splash screen that says
    **********FILE SYSTEM CHECK FAILED ****************************
    *   Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root file system
    *   is currently mounted read-only. To remount it read-write, type:
    *   mount –n –o remount,rw /.  When you exit the maintenance
    *   shell, the system will reboot automatically
    Give root password for maintenance
At this point, I give the root password and enter the maintenance shell as root. I typed in “mount” and the first entry I got back is
    /dev/sda6 on / type ext3 (rw)
This is exactly the root partition that the start up complains about. It is clearly there.  I can see it, I can walk around it… it is clearly there. Why won’t it boot? Despite the message, the superblock is fine – it passes every test e2fsck can throw at it.
At this point, I did a “e2fsck /dev/hda6 (which is how RIPLinux would have passed it into Arch” and it says it is “clean”. I suspect that the Superblock message is because Arch sees root as sda6, while RIP passed it in as hda6...
Deciding to see what Arch would be seeing as it tried to set things up in the boot sequence, I tried the following next:
    # mknod “/dev/root2” b 3 6
(“3” because RIPLinux refers to my hard drive as IDE, while Arch refers to it by major number “8”, which is SCSI. By the way, it IS an IDE drive – not sure why Arch insists on using the sdx nomenclature instead of hdx)
    Then I entered “mount /dev/root2 /mnt/hda6” and “ls /mnt/hda6”
All was well. I can make the node, I can mount it, and I can see the contents. All is clearly well, but something is clearly wrong enough that Arch can’t boot.
I am totally out of ideas. I have tried every trick I know and am out of tricks. I would welcome any insights as to what I could try to get this venerable Arch installation back on its legs.
By the way, the key section of the /etc/lilo.conf file (lest anyone want to know) is:
    image = /boot/vmlinuz26
       root = /dev/sda6
       label = ArchLinux-Duke
       initrd = /boot/kernel26.img
       read-only
I am stumped. Thanks in advance for any and all pointers you may be able to offer.

Folks, thanks for all your helpful comments, and I wanted to report back to you that I finally overcame the issue, and ArchLinux-Duke (2007) is once again executing flawlessly on my old Pentium Pro 200 system. I won't bother reporting here all the blind allies I went down as I tried to figure out what was wrong, but in the end, literally moments before I was about to give up and overwrite my Arch installation with a new Linux variant (antiX seemed well suited for such old and low power hardware), my attention was drawn to a note I had made in my files back in 2007 about a problem with similar symptoms. In that case, I had just deleted ZenWalk Linux from the hard drive (both Arch and Zen had been on the drive), and merged several partitions to make use of the newly free space. This had changed Arch's view of the drive lettering, and what had been its /dev/sddx root device was now /dev/sdcx. Arch failed to boot, throwing off the same errors I was seeing now. I wish I had recalled that note a month or so ago! It would have saved me a lot of work and a lot of frustration.
At any rate, as a last step, and testing the idea that maybe the drive lettering had changed for some reason, I repeatedly manually booted Arch, specifying root=/dev/sda6, then /dev/sdb6, then /dev/sdd6, and finally, /dev/sdc6. Eureka! Arch now considered itself to be on /dev/sdc6 whereas previously it had been on /dev/sda6. This got me part way there, but the boot failed at the filesystem check stage and threw me into root. I disabled the file system check in /etc/rc.sysinit and got farther. Then I cleaned up /etc/fstab to agree with the new sdc naming, and I was back on the air fully.
So, what had happened was that Arch had changed its view of the drive it was on from sda6 to sdc6. While I could not understand why this "sudden" change had occurred, at least I had a solution, and had Arch back up and running.
Trolling through the rest of my notes, I found the answer. In 2012, the Tekram SCSI card in the machine failed, and I ultimately replaced it with an Adaptec card. The Tekram card did not have a BIOS segment on it. The Adaptec card did. My guess is that this caused the two internal SCSI devices I have built into the system (Iomega ZIP and Jaz respectively) to be enumerated first, claiming the "sda" and "sdb". device names. That left "sdc" for the root device, and that is where Arch went next.  This is my guess anyway.
I should have caught this issue back in 2012, at the time, but from my notes, I can see that I tested the new card thoroughly using the  Windows NT 4.0 side of the machine, but never thought to bring up Arch as well. Hence, this problem lay dormant for two years, before I attempted to fire up Arch last month and blundered right into it.
It has not all been bad. I have learned more about the ext2 and ext3 file systems and superblocks in the intervening time than I will ever need to use. I have learned how to manually boot Linux on a machine whose BIOS is so old that it cannot address the disk cylinder that the kernel is on and I have completely refreshed the many general Linux skills that used to just flow from my finger tips. It has been a frustrating experience, but ultimately a successful and useful one.
Just wanted to let everyone know that this is now [SOLVED]. I would mark the post as such, but I don't see any obvious way to do that. Thanks again everyone.

  • Bootcamp and VMWare Fusion, possible problem with Bootcamp, cant see USB.

    Hey,
Would really appreciate your help. So I have MBP mid 2010 with the latest version of OSX Mountain Lion and decided to install Windows 7 on it. I gave it to the professional IT guy, who installed Windows 7 through the latest version of VMWare Fusion. It is not bad overall, but at times incredible slow (which might be because of my slow processor).
So I decided to install Windows 7 through the BootCamp Assistant - USB way. And did the following steps:
1)Format USB, put Windows 7 .iso image on it
    2) Installed the latest Windows software through the Bootcamp (step2 tick). However, it said that the latest version would be installed only after Windows 7 is installed (in step3 tick). I clicked OK and moved to Step 3
    3) I started Installing Windows and had a few errors (which were solved by repairing the HDD after rebooting in recovery mode), but all went fine until almost the end. Before the bar almost moved to the end my macbook went to reboot and I though it was all done and ready. I clicked the alt at *ding* sound and no USB was detected.
I checked disk utility and the thing was portioned.
I was thinking that MBP doesn't recognize the second Windows installed, and VMWare Fusion needs to be deleted in order to run Bootcamp. I haven't deleted anything, wanted to ask for advice first.
Any one could think of what's wrong? Thank you.

You can only install Windows from a USB in one of these computers:
    - MacBook Pro with Retina display.
    - MacBook Air.
    - Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
    - iMac (Late 2012).
Your Mac doesn't support the Windows installation through a USB drive. However, you have installed Windows through a USB drive. What did you do?
You did an EFI installation (or a native installation). Apple doesn't support this option because of the huge number of problems it gives, and you have probably erased OS X (or you erased the Windows partition that Boot Camp created, both possibilities). The error you mentioned in 3) was probably that the Windows installer detected that you have a MBR disk instead of a GPT one, and you erased everything.
First of all, to make sure that you erased everything, hold the Option (Alt) key while your Mac is starting. If you see the OS X partition, start up from it, and make a complete backup of your files with Time Machine.
Then, what I recommend you is to erase the whole drive by starting in Internet Recovery (hold Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting), and use the Time Machine option to restore your files

  • [SOLVED] Fluxbox won't work and mirror problem

Hello all, I recently tried to make the switch to Arch again from Ubuntu. Ran into some trouble though. Obviously I was using the 64 bit version. It installed just fine, but once I booted into it I couldn't use pacman to install anything or even refresh. After a bit of playing I found the file where the mirrors hide. The one I set in installation was uncommented as it should be but not working so up above I uncommented the same one (ibilio) and that fixed that. Is that a normal problem? Anyhow no biggie so I moved on. I go for straight Fluxbox. So I installed xorg and fluxbox. But for the life of me I can not get it to boot to fluxbox. Keeps going to twm. I tried everything in the fluxbox guide from the Arch wiki to get it going with no luck. Finally gave up and went back to Ubuntu. Now I used the 32 bit a time or two on an old computer and fluxbox worked fine. Here like I say startx would bring up twm. And startfluxbox (think thats the right command) would get a cannot connect to xserver error. Any ideas? I sure would love to use Arch. Sorry I can't be more precise on how it went but I no longer have it installed. If someone thinks they can help me with this though I would love to try again. Thanks.

Ah, sorry, I should have specified that you add it to your ~/.xinitrc file, and you will most likely have to make then edit that file (as I did) yourself.
    touch ~/.xinitrc
and then, with your text editor of choice add this line to that file
    exec startfluxbox
and save. If that still doesn't work let me know
You will always get kicked back to the command line, as X cannot find any login manager, and you had no user-specified fallback file that it would look for instead, so it fell back finally on the system-wide fallback, which is TWM.
So you have to rely on writing your own way to start x, which is the ~/.xinitrc file. Otherwise it will always find twm.
If you really don't want twm,  you can easily remove it (I don't have it installed at all) with a simple 'pacman -R xorg-twm'.

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux on encrypted luks partition on USB key

    Hi
I've installed Arch Linux on a USB key following this Wiki page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _a_USB_key
I also used dm-crypt as described in this Wiki page: https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Festpla … iante_1.29
I installed Arch Linux on the USB key using VirtualBox.
To do that, I created a "rawvmdk":
vboxmanage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename ./usb.vmdk -rawdisk /dev/sdd
Everything works fine when I'm trying to start the system within VirtualBox.
Syslinux loads Arch using the following kernel command:
    APPEND cryptdevice=UUID=6aa73872-3755-4bdf-bee3-d1cd7a3fe0bf:main root=/dev/mapper/main-root rw
/etc/mkinitcpio.conf holds the following "HOOKS" configuration:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block keyboard keymap encrypt lvm2 filesystems fsch resume"
As already mentioned the configuration works within VirtualBox. When I'm trying to boot from the USB key on my real computer, I'm getting an error. Syslinux works fine and loads Linux, but Linux is complaining. Here's the log:
    :: running hoock [encrypt]
    Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/6aa73872-3755-4bdf-bee3-d1cd7a3fe0bf ...
ERROR: device '/dev/mapper/main-root' not found. Skipping fschk.
ERROR: Unable to find root device '/dev/mapper/main-root'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
I'm not getting prompted for the passphrase since the cryptdevice can not be found. But why? It can be found when I'm booting within VirtualBox. What might be different? I successfully installed other Linux distributions (but without encryption and using GRUB as bootloader) previously within VirtualBox and was able to boot from the USB key on a real machine afterwards.
Some additional information that might help:
Here's the "lsblk -f output" for the stick:
    sdd
    ├─sdd1 ext4 usbboot bb45e84e-842e-4209-8c44-1af3c7933389
    └─sdd2 crypto_L 6aa73872-3755-4bdf-bee3-d1cd7a3fe0bf
When I'm running "lsblk" or "blkid" from the recovery shell after the failure, I'm getting no output. "ls /dev/sd*" returns nothing as well. The directory /dev/disk does not even exists in the recovery shell. (I'm not sure if this is normal or not.)
    Thanks for helping.

I still haven't solved the problem:
When starting the system on a machine with NVIDIA GTX 560Ti graphics card:
    - X doesn't start using startx or xinit and there are no log entries in /var/log/Xorg.*.log (as I haven't tried to start X).
    - I'm getting the message "Waiting for X server to begin accepting connections .. .. .. ..".
    - I already tried to uninstall xf86-video-nouveau and nouveau-dri with no effect.
    - Additionally: The "default terminals tty1/2/3/..." (which I'm using to start X) from have a poor resolution (I think 640x480 pixel).
When starting the system on a virtual machine or a machine with an ATI Radeon (mobile) graphics card:
    - X starts and runs without any trouble the XFCE desktop environment.
    - Additionally: The default terminals have a proper resolution (I think the maximal resolution of the display).

  • [SOLVED] Spacing between start menu and tray icons lost

    Hi,
I am using KDEmod + Arch
After todays upgrade, spacing between start menu at the left and tray icons at the right lost making the tray icons align to the left side of the tray. An X mark in a red box appeared in between on mouse hover, shows the message that : Unable to load the widget, could not find the requested component: stasks.
    A screen shot is here:
    http://twitpic.com/od3jh
What is to be done to rectify it?
Last edited by absolutevoid (2009-11-05 18:31:36)

    Long:
You're using the stasks plasma widget, which likely just needs to be recompiled for kde 4.3.3, as it was just upgraded from 4.3.2 in Arch's Extra repository and I imagine the same applies to KDEMod.
pacman -Q | grep stask    will likely show you what the stasks plasma widget is called.
If it's a kdemod package or returns nothing (meaning stasks is in some other plasma applet package, perhaps kdemod-plasma-applets or something.. pacman -Q | grep plasm would show all such packages with 'plasma' in the name), you'll need to recompile it with ABS or just post on the KDEMod forum and wait for them to update it. If you haven't rebooted since upgrading, there's sometimes something out of my ability to explain which causes KDE stuff not to show up / work properly even after running 'kbuildsycoca4' or 'kbuildsycoca' or killing and restarting kdm until said reboot.
The two stasks plasmoids I see in the arch user repository are "stasks-manager-plasmoid" (which you're likely using) and "plasma-stasks-patched-plasmoid-hg". If pacman -Q | grep stask shows one of those, simply recompile it via yaourt -S name_of_the_widget, and you should be good to go on logout/in or reboot or what have you.
    Short:
Run in konsole: pacman -Q | grep stask
If it shows something with "kdemod" in the name or returns nothing, you should probably post a bug report with the KDEMod/Chakra guys at chakra-project.org (bug tracker is currently down, use the forums). If it shows "stasks-manager-plasmoid" or "plasma-stasks-patched-plasmoid-hg", recompile it via yaourt -S name_of_the_package and log out/in (or reboot if necessary.. it shouldn't be though).

  • [SOLVED] Arch does not start into gnome desktop

I installed arch from the scratch into a new hard drive due to a disk failure in the old one. After installing it, I booted into gnome3 desktop without problems.
Today I have upgraded it by performing:
    #pacman -Syu
and also I have installed some other no important packages mplayer, banshee, etc... also I have seen that my kernel has been upgraded into 3.11.4-1-ARCH fro 3.10.10-1-ARCH.
After rebooting, my arch does not boot, even in fallback mode. It starts cleaning blocks from the partitions, and then after it is done, cursor is blinking and no other messages are printed out. It stays with cursor blinking forever. I have a GUID Partition table and a LVM2 where all paritions are made.
I can log in into console by pressing CTRL+ALT+F2. Once I have prompted I have no network interfaces, only lo (loopback). If I do:
    #ip link show
    #ip addr list
I only get lo (loopback) interface listed, others like wifi and ethernet cable does not appear.
    If I perform below:
    #journalctl -xn
I do not see any problematic message, only this one:
Failed to open private bus connection
Any ideas why arch is not booting and get into gnome session (login window)?
    UPDATED:
The problem is that once I have performed the full system update with:
    #pacman -Syu
My kernel images has been upgraded and successfully generated into 3.11.4-1-ARCH but I have seen that my kernel, after log in to console and performing:
    $uname -r
it says kernel version continues being 3.10.10-1-ARCH so at startup images genereated into 3.11.4-1-ARCH do not match so cursor remains blinking forever....
I am trying to update the kernel but now I have no internet connection, no network interfaces are shown.... so how to do this now? chrooting?

ewaller wrote:Check the output of uname -a and of pacman -Qi linux and ensure that the versions match.  If they don't, you are somehow starting using the wrong kernel and it cannot find its modules.
You are right, see my updated post, for some reason image were successfully generated into 3.11.4-1-ARCH but kernel has not been updated and it remains in 3.10.10-1-ARCH.... so they do not match and arch does not boot.... so cursor remains blinking forever....

  • [SOLVED] Asus eee 1000H : netcfg and wicd unable to obtain IP

    Hi,
I just installed arch linux on my asus eee 1000h, but I can't get
wireless to work. I installed the packages:
    - wireless_tools
    - netcfg
I have been reading through the beginners guide and the wireless setup guide,
    but still no success.
    I did
    lspci | grep -i net
And found out I had to add the firmware for my card, so I did that and:
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    worked. So I did:
    iwlist wlan0 scan
And found the network I wanted to connect too, so I do:
    iwconfig wlan0 essid network_id key wep_hex_key
But I dont get associated to any access point, so I tried:
    ifconfig wlan0 down
    ifconfig wlan0 up
Sometimes this gets me associated to the access point, however, it seems to
be pretty unstable. Usually it 'looses' it's association after a short period
    of time.
    Then I do:
    dhcpcd wlan0
However, I just get the output
    dhcpcd: version 5.2.2 starting
    dhcpcd: broadcasting for a lease
    dhcpcd: timed out
I check "iwconfig wlan0" at it says it is still associated to the access point.
I have tried netcfg, but it also just get's timed out waiting for a lease.
I've tried to get this to work for a long time now, but can't seem to get it to
work. I've read somewhere that it might be a bug in dhcpcd? If you have a
suggestion for something to try, please keep in mind that I am not at all
familiar with arch linux and explain accordingly.
I installed arch linux because I want a distribution that forces me to learn
more about linux, I just did'nt think it would be this much trouble, been trying
for a couple of days now, I have allready learned alot though.
    Thanks for any reply.
EDIT: I also tried setting the timeout to 120, it did not work
EDIT 2: I tried using netcfg again. It first returned:
    WPA Authentication/Association Failed
I tried again, and it returned:
    DHCP IP lease attempt failed
Does this mean I have to use wpa encryption? I find this
strange as I am connecting to the same network with
my ubuntu machine using wep encryption.

edit your /etc/rc.conf to blacklist all of the modules that interfere with the rt2860sta module:
    MODULES=(!rt2800pci !rt61pci !rt2x00pci !rt2800usb !rt2800lib !rt2x00usb !rt2x00lib)
don't initialize network with any other services:
    #eth0="dhcp"
    #wlan0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=()
make sure you don't have conflicting daemons running:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus wicd netfs crond)
then restart and try again(or go through rmmod and stopping and starting the individual services)
btw... I am using arch+wicd on my eee 1000h to write this post, so if you have any more problems just let me know.
also check out the eee 901 archwiki page it has a lot of good info and links.

    Welcome to Discussions, Stanley Chung
Sorry you are still having problems even after trying the good suggestions from Ralph and Boomer.
I did not see specifically from your posts that your iSight worked before upgrading to Snow Leopard, but I am inferring from your topic's title that it did. If your iMac came with Snow Leopard installed, please post and tell us whether you erased the disk and reinstalled all your iMac's software before you started using it. If you upgraded your iMac to Snow Leopard, consider the following.
    (1) Until you get iSight working, do all your testing while no peripherals other than keyboard/mouse are attached to your iMac. To eliminate all possibility of any conflict external to your Mac, be sure you also disconnect any wireless devices (iPod, printer, etc) connected to your system.
    (2) If you still have problems with all you have tried, it seems to me that you must have a software issue. You might try uninstalling Skype and VMWare and testing again to see if those installations are causing a conflict.
    (3) Check the support sites for all of your third party software to be sure there are no known Snow Leopard issues and that you are using the latest compatible versions.
    (4) If the problem still exists and you have not already tried this, reinstall Snow Leopard, repairing permissions immediately before and after the reinstall.
    (5) If your problem remains and System Profiler still shows your inbuilt iSight as a USB device, I suggest you backup all important files, erase your disk, reinstall all Apple software, and test to see if iSight works properly. Once it does, you can install any necessary peripherals and third-party apps one-at-a-time, testing after each addition to see if one of them is causing problems.

  • [SOLVED] Arch not showing up in grub after ArchBang install

I have a triple booting machine with Windows7, Arch, and ArchBang.  Windows 7's system partition is where I have the bootloader installed.  I recently installed Archbang and now my other Arch is not showing up in grub.  I tried updating the grub menu by running os-prober, installing grub to the boot partition and doing a grub-mkconfig but it will not find the other Arch on the other partition.  I'm thinking maybe this is a naming issues since they have the same grub entry name?  I don't know.  Any thoughts?

  • [SOLVED] Arch terminal issues

Having some trouble with my terminal in Arch. I currently have Arch running with i3 and using Terminator emulating xterm. Everything is fine except something is causing the terminal instance to wrap the cursor way too earlier (before the end of the columns) and it wraps back to the start of the line rather than the beginning of a new line. I'm not sure how this would have happened or if there is some option to fix this. It works fine when I have no seperate tiles, adding vertical tiles causes the weird word wrap but horizontal tiling doesn't affect it. It's almost like its trying to programmatically figure out the word wrap point but gets halved with you add vertical tiles
    Thanks for any help!
