[Solved] Auto update of variables

I am modifying another's script by having it call on two variables. The variables need to be able to update automatically after they have been initialized. I sense the solution easy but all my search querys have not yielded any answers. The variables in question are $MONTH and $YEAR. Thank you.
#!/bin/bash
MONTH=$(date --date=now +%m)
YEAR=$(date --date=now +%g)
aurum ()
if [ "$MONTH" == "01" ]; then
printf "F$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "02" ]; then
printf "G$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "03" ]; then
printf "H$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "04" ]; then
printf "J$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "05" ]; then
printf "K$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "06" ]; then
printf "M$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "07" ]; then
printf "N$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "08" ]; then
printf "Q$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "09" ]; then
printf "U$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "10" ]; then
printf "V$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "11" ]; then
printf "X$YEAR"
elif [ "$MONTH" == "12" ]; then
printf "Z$YEAR"

C_YAHOO_FINANCE_URL="http://download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?f=sl1k2&s=SI$(aurum).CMX+GC$(aurum).CMX+CL$(aurum).NYM+^TNX+^VIX+^GSPC+^IXIC+^FTSE+^GDAXI+^N225+^HSI"
while true
do
TICKER=$(curl -s "$C_YAHOO_FINANCE_URL")
clear
echo "$TICKER" | while read line;
do
if [[ $line == *+* ]]
then
echo -e "\e[00;32m$line" | tr -s ',^"' ' '
else
echo -e "\e[00;31m$line" | tr -s ',^"' ' '
fi
done
sleep 20s
done

Really, case?  Array's are your friend:
month_name=(Zero F G H J K M N Q U V X Z)
aurum() {
echo ${month_name[$MONTH]}$YEAR
And this, of course, nullifies the need for a separate function to do this - just use ${month_name[...]} wherever you need it.
Many thanks this was a great fix. Nice and clean.

As for the original problem, why not just restart the script once a mont??
If you really want it automated, make a cron job that kills the script and restarts it on the first second of the first day of every month.
That was my first solution but my friend challanged me to consolidate all the work in this one script. Also, if there's a fix for self-updating variables in a script doesn't that increase its portability? I know many people who would be interested in having a command line market ticker but having to add crons for gold, silver, oil and other commodities diminishes the appeal. Mostly I am interested in the challange of editing the script to have self-updating variables. I don't know if this is possible but I am pursuing it.

And the curl to variable then echo variable to pipe is odd.  Just "curl url... | while read line".  I see the 'clear', which makes me think you don't want to see the curl progress.  But if that is the reason, it still would flash on the screen every 20 seconds.  Instead, just redirect curl's stderr to /dev/null.  EDIT: curl does have such a flag:
curl -s <someurlbits>${month_name[$MONTH]}$YEAR<otherurlbits> | while read line
This single line will cut 30 some lines from your original.
The flash was a seamless blink on each update that rarely caught my eye. Your solution does remove that but now the shell is not cleared on each update and thus the old quotes stay on top of the new. Perhaps I am missing something basic.

  • HP Auto Update

    My HDMI video and audio were fine. However, after HP Auto Update prompted me to update with out any cancel button, and it automatic updated by itself, there was no sound from my TV, and also, the display was bigger than my TV. After that I did a system restore, and my HDMI video and audio are working fine again.
    My question is:
    How do I stop HP Auto Update from updating automatically?
    Please advise.

    I understand that an HP update was installed and you lost the audio and the resolution on the display had been changed.
    You did a restore and everything is back to normal.  You would like to know how to stop the update from being installed.
    Here is a link to Change how Windows installs or notifies you about updates  that will allow you to choose by changing the setting.

  • Hp split 13 X2 does not update to windows 8.1 how do I stop the auto update

    My notebook runs with Windows 8.0 and functions well.  Unfortunately the Windows OS want so to update to Windows 8.1 and my notebook does not accept the upgrade as it will not configure the change.  Even though I have set the Windows update to require my approval before updates are initiated it continues to auto update to Windows 8.1.  When the update fails my PC automatically reinstalls Windows 8.0 and I am back working again.  This has happened 3X in the last 2 months and I am frustrated.  Does anyone have any suggestion on how to stop this cycle?

    I understand that you are having an issue with updating your Windows 8 to 8.1. Although you have set the update to require your approval before installing the update, it does it automatically.
    When the update fails it reverts back to Windows 8 and all is well.

  • Problems with login on iPod after auto update of S...

    My father-in-law "V" uses Skype on iPod. Recently Skype auto-updated and "V" could no longer login into his account. I tried to help, sending his email on file to Skype and getting instructions on how to reset password. I suspected that he just forgot right spelling of his PW. Email came from Skype with instructions on resetting PW, but I noticed that Skype name mentined there is almost right. Almost is because it had extra "1" in the end, which "V" did not have. I had to delete and re-install Skype on his iPod to make it work. I tried to use his correct Skype name in Login space and new password, but it did not work. Then I used his name with extra"1" at the end as in Skype's email and newly changed PW. And it worked, but surely enough, all his contacts were gone.
    How can we restore his login to right name which he always used? This, I assume, would solve problem of vanished contacts. How come his Skype name suddenly changed without "V" himself doing that?

    In reference to the linked article I already had the ipod options set to automatically update the podcasts for selected episodes. I just set it to manual and back to automatic, perhaps this will fix it. The mysterious podcasts playlist has appeared twice today for me so far.

  • Auto updates...is there another way??

    I have a 40GB photo Ipod and so far I have only put songs on it. The computer I use to put stuff on my ipod is my mom's work computer and she doesn't like her itunes library getting more than about 200 songs in it. I share itunes on that computer with my mom and my brother so I chose manual update in order to avoid getting my brother and mom's songs on my ipod. Now in trying to put on my podcasts and photos I can't just drag and drop the way I have been with my playlists. How can I get photos and podcasts on without using auto update? If i change over at this point will all the songs I deleted from the library dissappear from my ipod?
    any enlightnement you can provide is greatly accepted!
    thanks,

  • How do I prevent auto-updating of ATV software?

    My problem is that I have HughesNet, which has a fair usage limit. Unless either I, or Apple, can schedule ATV updates to a 2:00 - 5:59 a.m. window, the updates kick us into slower than dial up for 24 hours.
    I'm running 2.3 right now with my ATV wanting to install an update...probably the one that kicked us into fair access penalty the day before yesterday. I can see no option in the menu to manually control auto-updating. I understand there used to be one, but I can't find it.
    So far my only option is to kill the power to ATV. But that's not going to prevent updates while it's running.
    Any ideas?

    I just got off the phone with Apple tech support. He said that there is no auto-update, but we made sure that ATV wasn't somehow using any auto-update permissions in either Software Update or iTunes.
    Here's what I noticed. When I would turn my ATV back on by restoring the power and go to General, the Update Software line had the spinner going. When I would click on that I was given the choice to continue the update or to do it later. I chose 'later'. Going back to Update Software showed no spinner.
    However, it looked like every time I changed what the ATV was doing and then checked General, Update Software had gone back into the spinning mode. If the Apple tech rep is correct, that spinner wasn't indicating that a download was in progress, just that one was available. I'm not sure I believe that, since something went after 260 meg plus of download the other day when all of the Macs here were asleep and the only functioning machine was ATV. That's what helped in a big way to trigger the fair usage idiocy of HughesNet.
    This morning at 3:30 a.m. I got up and triggered the update. 360+ Meg later it was ready to install when I woke back up.
    Today, now running under then latest upgrade, the Update Software line has no spinner.
    Whether the problem has been solved is unclear. But I have decommissioned any auto-upgrade capabilities on Software Update and iTunes. We'll see when Apple launches the next ATV software upgrade.
    Props, however, to Apple's tech call availability. It's down toward the left corner of Apples's home support page.

  • No Auto-Update for To Do list, session message and toast message

    After LC ES Server hardening, we noticed that auto-update is not working for To Do list, session message and new task notification toast message. Before server hardening, all of them are still working fine.
    Does anyone know why auto-update is not working after server hardening? Is there any specific port numbers which need to be enabled/opened to solve this issue?

    JGroups is an open source project that allows processes to send messages to one another. LiveCycle data services uses it for its messaging implementation (basically it configures the server to multicast messages to all the listening clients...even in a clustered environment across different LAN/WAN).
    In most cases the default configuration will work fine, the problem is that if you are running a firewall on the server (or your local machine...i.e. windows firewall) the ports that JGroups uses for its communications can be blocked. In a local environment its easy enough to disable windows firewall and bounce your server to get things working.
    In a production environment you need to open the ports that JGroups is using. These settings are in the Global Administration settings (as mentioned by WorkspaceUser above). If you export it and look at the JChannelConnectionProperties you'll see the ports its using and you can set your firewall to allow communication to those ports.

  • Adobe PS Element 2 auto-update 2nite causing problems - suggestions please

    I understand that this is really an issue I should post on the Adobe forum [on their web-page] since it is their product that is causing this problem, and I will as a last resort if need be.
    In a nutshell, I'll be brief with my problem.
    -I'm using PS Elements version 2.0.2 (which I did purchase)
    -Program worked super until tonight
    -tonight when I opened it [to play around with a photo], it attempted to, what I think, attempted to auto-update itself via the internet
    - I'm on DSL but gave it plenty of time to auto-update 2 files
    - visually, screen gave me a bar indicating time remaining for update to finish, however, even when bar indicator is completely full the auto-update won't proceed further [just hangs there with a full bar]
    - forced quit. rebooted. opened again. Elements again goes through same routine and sticks at a full indicator bar and I can't proceed.
    Brief technical info. on what PS Elements tells me it is installing
    - AWEX Files.txt to Mac HD: Library: Application Support: Adobe: Web:
    Conclusion: I could care less if it updates itself, I just want it to work again. If I need to delete files in folders I'll do it - whatever it takes, please help.

    Geez, I thought Adobe finally fixed that bug. You might try unplugging your computer from the Internet and then try launching Elements. Without a connection it ought to just shrug its virtual shoulders and then launch without the stupid, and to you completely pointless, web crud update. There is not now, nor will there ever be again, any updates to Elements 2 of any interest to the actual user. If does indeed launch without the Internet connection, you can then go to Elements->Prefences and at the bottom of menu select Adobe Online... and then set the "Check for updates" to Never. Click OK and your problem should be solved.

  • Auto-update not working on 64-bit Windows Firefox Aurora

    I realize the correct directory to download Aurora builds would be http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-aurora-l10n/, but it does not have 64-bit Windows build which is unfortunately the only way to solve severe stuttering problems in Flash.
    Previously I had used nightly builds, while they did work fine most of the time sometimes there issues that forced me back to standard builds, and stuttering Flash.
    So instead I've been trying to use 64-bit Aurora I downloaded from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-aurora/. It's been a smooth experience otherwise but auto-update doesn't work. First it attempts to install small patch, which fails. Then it tries to install full update, which again fails.
    Here's a screenshot of the full update failure message: http://i.imgur.com/8HmPjTE.jpg

    Thanks for the feedback. The topic linked above suggests that the problem with auto-update lies with CA certificate. I've submitted feedback to Moziilla and linked here just in case.
    If the cause of failing auto-update is the CA certificate, hopefully Mozilla is willing to correct the problem.
    Stuttering Flash in 32-bit Firefox is simply unbearable and I have to either use 64-bit Nightly or Aurora builds, or go Chrome.

  • Flash player silent auto update not working

    I was glad to read the news about the new feature of silent auto updates of the Adobe Flash player, but unfortunately this is not working on my machine. Has anyone had the same problems and was able to solve them?
    Some information on my setup:
    I had previously installed Flash player version 11.1.102.63, both ActiveX and Plugin version (installed through the .msi files, deployed via Active Directory/GPO - no further configuration, just plain original .msi files).
    To test the auto update feature, I decided to install the new 11.2.202.228 version, but only the ActiveX version. I installed this via the .exe installer (install_flash_player_11_active_x_32bit.exe) manually, choosing "Install updates automatically when available (recommended)" in the last step of the installation, as seen here:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/background-updater-windows.html
    When I open Control Panel -> Flash Player, under the "Advanced" tab I see:
    "Install updates automatically" is chosen, but greyed out (no admin rights with this windows user)
    ActiveX version: 11.2.202.228
    Plug-In version: 11.1.102.63
    The file "mms.cfg" under C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\ contains:
    AutoUpdateDisable=0
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=1
    The task "Adobe Flash Player Updater" was created and is scheduled to run every 1 hour. I can see that it is started ("last start time"), the result code is 0x0 which means "no error".
    So everything as expected. But the auto update is not working, since the plugin version of flash player never gets updated!
    I edited the "mms.cfg" and added:
    SilentAutoUpdateVerboseLogging=1
    After manually starting the task, there are some lines added to "FlashInstall.log" in the same directory:

    Some more information:
    Windows XP SP3, all windows updates installed, german
    Avira Professional Security anti-virus software
    Machine is behind a proxy server, but this is set up in Control Panel -> Internet Options
    I suppose this is a problem with our proxy server. Does the auto updater not use the proxy information from the Windows Control Panel settings?
    Kind Regards,
    Martin

    Hey Hans,
    After reading of your sucsess I attempted to replicate it.
    I am happy to say that I managed to update from Adobe Flash 11.2.202.228 to 11.2.202.233 on serveral different windows 7 notebooks and desktops sliently.
    I went into the windows task scedular and ran the Adobe Flash Player Updater task (I didn't need to change anything in the task or the service for it to work).
    The only issue I found was that if I ran the task again without restarting the computer no requests from the client would show up in the logs from my web server but if I restarted my computer and then reran the task it would work again. I'm assuming that it will only sent requests out every 24hours is talked about in page 18 of the Flash Player 11.2 Administration Guide.
    My Web Servers logs look like this:
    2012-04-27 05:45:01 W3SVC1967680676 10.135.12.38 GET /pub/flashplayer/update/current/sau/11/xml/version.xml - 443 - 10.135.13.17 Get+Flash+Player+version+xml/1.0 200 0 0
    2012-04-27 05:45:05 W3SVC1967680676 10.135.12.38 GET /pub/flashplayer/update/current/sau/11/install/install_all_win_ax_sgn.z - 80 - 10.135.13.17 Download+Flash+Player+Installer/1.0 200 0 0
    My mms.cfg looks like this:
    AutoUpdateDisable=0
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=1
    SilentAutoUpdateServerDomain=proxy.tallangatta-sc.vic.edu.au
    I think the biggest issue I had during testing was that I forgot to my web servers certificate into the windows certificate stores trusts root certs of my notebooks/desktops. EG: http://blogs.adobe.com/livecycle/2012/04/rights-management-how-to-get-windows-7-to-trust-a -self-signed-server-certificate.html
    I have since deployed the mms.cfg file and added my web servers certificate into the trusted root certs via group policy to all my clients and it is working very well. I have also writen a batch file to download the needed files from adobe for that backgroup updater and to put them on my web server. I created a daily task on my web server to run the batch file. If anyone wants the batch file or shell script please email me and I'll forward it on.
    My batch file pretty much looks like this:
    @echo off

  • How do I stop Fire Fox auto Updates?

    all of the boxes are properly checked and it still updates. I want total control of what goes on my computer. I hate auto updates, I want to tell it when and if to update. I am about to uninstall Fire Fox and change if I can't solve this. How do I stop you from over riding my settings of NEVER check , never update ? I do not let any one or any program change anything on my computer NO MATTER WHAT! SO what gives, how do I stop you from doing it?

    I had uninstalled said update and was not any issue after that for last day (3,4 hours working).
    But today i have been embraced again with same error. But a clue further to this is that my machine got updated by automatic updates earlier this morning as well.
    I have rechecked from my windows update section that your said KB is not in the list; as i have uninstalled it and the windows auto update havent reinstalled it.

  • Shockwave Player 12.0.7.148 prompts for an auto update. Even though Auto Update is disabled.

    We have been re-packaging Adobe Shockwave Player 12.0.7.148. Application is prompting to upgrade new version i.e. auto update even though auto update functionality is disabled. Can any one please help in this? When we right click on shockwave frame over an internet page and check the properties, we can see an Autoupdate is supress.
    Thanks for your return.

    Thank you for your reply. Like I said in my post, I have been having this issue since the summer of 2011, when I was still using regular firefox. In fact, I had made the switch to Aurora in the hopes that this would be solved, given the ongoing changes to the update process. Going back to regular Firefox, which seems to be your only suggestion, would therefore not solve my problem, and it would rob me of the opportunity to enjoy and give feedback on other new features.
    In addition, like I said in my original post, I have tried several of the most common ways of dealing with such issues, to no avail. After an extensive search, I also couldn't find anybody else with this bug. That is why I turned to this support forum. If you know of a way this problem could be solved, I would very much appreciate it.

  • Black screen after windows auto update

    New laptop in use for 3 weeks.  After Windows auto update restart I get to splash screen and am able to enter Windows password to log onto desktop.  After successfully entering password I am not able to view my desktop; I get the black screen with cursor function; cursor disappears when moved within an inch of left or right of screen (seems to go behind something).  I believe I am at the desktop but just not able to view it, because I receive app popups on the black screen (need to update McAfee, etc).
    In safe mode I restored to pre auto update date; manually installed all Windows updates;  worked fine until NEXT auto update, same problem.
    Graphics Card:  Stock Intel HD Graphics
    Monitor:  Generic PnP
    Why would it be fine with the manual update and not after auto update?
    I do not have an external monitor to attach this laptop for diagnosis.  I have run windows partition checks and hard drive partition checks with no issues to resolve.
    I did get an error message once when running a diagnosis (can't remember which) : Windows Update Error 0x80070490
    No real luck finding anyway for me (the average Joe) to resolve this issue.
    If this is a harddrive issue I don't want to keep pussyfooting around while my warranty window shrinks.
    I have downloaded driver updates from HP, but cannot get the Synaptics Touchpad driver to download.  I don't think this is my issue though.
    I am going to manually update all my drivers then manually update Windows.  We will see what happens on the next auto update.
    Please advise if this is an issue I need to just give up on and return this laptop for replacement.  It seems like this is not a completely unheard of issue, but I'm shocked at what we are asked to do to attempt to resolve it.  Out of my depth.

    Hi @Justanothermom
    Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
    I understand that you are having troubles with a black screen after an update. I am happy to help you with this.
    Firstly, there is nothing wrong with modifiying your update settings. I was going to suggest it myself as I read through your post, and then saw you ask the question. Sometimes updates can have unintended results by the creator. With all the different combinations of  hardware, and the fact that updates come from different sources, it is one of those things that is hard to completely control.
    Please see the following for how to make adjustments to your update settings.
    Turn automatic updating on or off - windows.microsoft.com
    Or if you know which update seems to be causing the issue you can take a look at this page:
    win 8.1 August 12 updates - black screen after 2nd reboot - answers.microsoft.com
    Let me know if this helps at all.

  • Auto Update Bug Returns

    I had a problem, which was solved here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2433769
    However the problem has recurred, swcdn.apple.com 80.67.74.160 no longer seems to work... Updates are no longer showing as available, despite knowing that at the very minimum iTunes 10 should be available for download.
    To recap here is my original post: "
    I think I am having a problem with the Auto update function on several of the computers in my household. I am using OS X 10.5.8.
    The problem seemed to appear around the time iTunes 9.1.1 became available. Since around that time my software update has not shown a single update to download. When I open it manually to check for new updates it checks, and I get the message: "Your software is up to date. Software Update doesn’t have any new software for your computer at this time."
    However whenever I load iTunes (Version 9.0.8) I get the message that iTunes 9.1.1 is now available, and it asks me whether I would like to download it. When I click yes, it opens the Software update program, it checks for new updates, and I receive the same message: "Your software is up to date. Software Update doesn’t have any new software for your computer at this time."
    I finally manually downloaded iTunes 9.1.1 to see if that would solve the problem, however I am still not receiving any new updates to download.
    Has anyone else had this problem? I could not find anything through google searches on the topic.
    Does anyone have any suggestions, or possible solutions?
    Thanks for any help!
    Cheers. "
    And here was the solution that worked previously, but no longer works:
    "There was a recent thread in the Tiger forum about a problem involving all software updates, not just iTunes:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2430574
    The fix that finally worked for him was described in this very recent outside post:
    Mac Software Update Not Working – Solution
    http://thinlight.org/2010/05/15/mac-software-update-not-working-solution/
    It contains the following:
    I found that the software update app downloads information from swcdn.apple.com, but the resolved IP for me is not working – as it’s CDN, users at different locations may get different IP addresses.
    The solution is simple – add the following line to your /etc/hosts file:
    80.67.74.160 swcdn.apple.com
    and go back to check software update.
    and also contains:
    Notice that most complaints of software update started in May... I don't know the relationship between ytcdn.net and Akamai CDN, but if ytcdn.net is really expired, it is a serious fault. Apple is using Akamai as its CDN, and Akamai redirects some users to ytcdn.net. As I know, most of these users are in China, but some users in other countries are also affected.

    Thanks for any help. Sorry for the repost, but the original was archived.

    Hi,
    I had the same problem.... update worked for awhile then no more auto updates. Unfortunately, it turned out to be my logic board that was a lemon. They replaced it and all is well. See the link below as someone else was trying to help me and his links there may help you. Good luck!
