[SOLVED] Automount CD or DVD doesn't work (consistently)

Problem with mounting CD's / DVD's and Device Notifier
DVD's are not mounted in /media/, and the Device Notifier does not show them.
CD's (which aren't actually mounted)  I can always access in Dolphin with "AudioCD:/", but Device Notifier rarely pops up (maybe 1 out of 10 times).
facts:
- No device listing in /etc/fstab for DVDROM
- File in /etc/hal/fdi/information/<device>.fdi has bool set to 'true' (and I tried deleting the whole file as well)
- HAL notices that the CD / DVD is inserted (with lshal -m):
storage_model_DVDRW___DVR_K17B property storage.removable.media_available = true
- Tried deleting .KDE4 profile, but that didn't change anything,
- I've got Ubuntu 10.10 installed on the same hardware, and it mounts / shows everything without problems (conclusion: problem is not hardware-related). Ubuntu doesn't use HAL.
- SystemSettings -> Removable Devices -> Automount on Attach is enabled (just in case),
- USB flashdrives and external Hard Disk are mounted and shown by Device Notifier without problem.
- I do get these errors with cat /var/log/errors.log | grep sr0, but they also appear in the rare event when a CD or DVD is actually mounted and shown by Device Notifier:
DVD:
Sep  7 13:55:05 localhost kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 4096
Sep  7 13:55:05 localhost kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 1024
Sep  7 13:55:05 localhost kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 1025
CD:
Sep  7 13:58:57 localhost kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
Sep  7 13:58:57 localhost kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0
Sep  7 13:58:57 localhost kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 1
(the CD in this case was actually shown by Device Notifier normally! So these errors don't seem to have anything to do with it)
I don't think this is HAL - related, so it must be udev, dbus (not likely), or maybe KDE / device notifier.. ?
How do I troubleshoot this? Any suggestions?

Problem solved:
At one time, I was using the [testing] repo.  Removed it from pacman.conf a week ago, because i wanted to get back to the stable packages.  I re-installed all the older versions of the packages that are in core / extra and that pacman warned me about.  Did not get any further warnings after that, so I assumed everything was fine, and the rest of the system was stable and working just fine.  But something must have been broken, see the above.   In other words: I messed up things without knowing about it. :-S
Today I added [testing] again to check if this would solve my problems, and it did!
Or... is it just the newer version of udev that is in testing at the moment. :-)  Who knows.
This leads me to my next question: how can i safely disable [testing] and return to stable packages, without breaking anything?

  • A65-S159 - I can't use the CD Recovery because my CD/DVD doesn't work properly

Hi, I need help to reinstall the system and drives. It's a Satellite A65-S159. The CD/DVD doesn't work properly. Rarely, the CD/DVD can read a DVD. So I can't use the CD Recovery. What may I do?
    Thank you,
    Cabula, Brazil

There are two ways to run the recovery DVD, one is from Windows.  Instead power ont he computer with the disk in the drive.  And imediatly after powering on start pressing the F12 key.  After a few seconds you should see a boot device menu that you can select the CD/DVD drive to boot from.  Try that and let us know if you got the boot menu, and if the disk worked.

    FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR INTERNAL SUPERDRIVE
This might help. If you haven't done so yet, try installing Apple's SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0, which is on Apple's support site at http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201953 to see if that resolves it. Although it's not specifically for that problem, the firmware update seems to be important for making external SuperDrives work in Yosemite, and it is one step I used to get my SuperDrive to work in a USB external case when plugged into my MacBook Pro.
Please let us know either way, whether the firmware update helps or not in your situation.

    Hi,
since today in amarok (2.4.1) the volume control doesn't work anymore. I can change the level on the switch on the top right but it doesn't change the actual volume.
The volume control in my KDE tray works as usual.

  • [SOLVED]Something wrong with Locale, "ÅÖÄ" doesn't work in terminal.

If you have this kind of problem stated above in the title, or similar, here is what I did...
Make sure you have correct locale, you'll need a UTF-8 one.
As stated in the install guide(or beginner's guide iirc) do the following:
Uncomment  one of the locales in "/etc/locale.gen", it doesn't have to be language pacific if you're only after using UTF-8 which provides more characters than normal ASCII.
then run "locale-gen". Make sure to set your "/etc/locale.conf" to "LANG=en_US-UTF8" of course you can choose whatever locale you want not just "en_US-UTF-8". After that make sure to reboot, it may also work with just log-out and log-in again, but I did not reboot and neither log-out and when back in. If it still doesn't work, run "locale" and "locale-a" if the output is "C" in each column just redo what I stated above, if it still not work, then you have to consult the manual, wiki and if you don't find the problem use a search-engine and if you still don't find answer here on the forums, the people here is really helpful!

    " Okey I uncommented sv_SE.utf8 in /etc/locale.gen ...
You're supposed to uncomment "sv_SV.UTF-8 UTF-8", then run locale-gen (with sudo), not "sv_SE.utf8".
    That's what I did.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … ide#Locale
^ Except that you shouldn't use "echo" in this case. That command works well when you're logged in as root, but for sudo, not so much. Check the file with nano and you'll see that nothing changed. For sudo, use tee.
    $ sudo tee /etc/locale.conf <<< "LANG=en_US.UTF-8"
Note: You don't necessarily need "sv_SV" for those characters to show up. Setting a "sv_SV" locale would make programs show up in Swedish instead of English - unless that's what you want. UTF-8 locales will cover those characters just fine (provided that the font from the terminal actually contains those glyphs, of course).
So you mean I can have en_US.UTF8 as locale but still write swedish letters? So the problem is with the font or somthing, not the locale?
If you still have problems, post the output of:
    $ ls -l /etc/profile.d/locale.sh
    $ curl sprunge.us -F sprunge=@/etc/locale.gen
    $ curl sprunge.us -F sprunge=@/etc/locale.conf
    $ locale -a
    $ locale
Well, I did as the guide told about locale.conf, it doesn't seem to work, even if "locale" outputs correct info now, but I'll try with restarting the X server too, just in case.....

  • [SOLVED] vfs_zip plugin for deadbeef doesn't work

    hello everybody here,
    i found vfs_zip plugin here doesn't work,
that is, i can import music files from zip archive, but i can't play them-
if i play those ones, the deadbeef'll be stuck ,even if i try play other files.
so, any solution here? any idea is appreciated, and thanks in advance:-)
    BTW:
i have installed libzip in advance, so i think it's not the cause...
and i've tried deadbeef (from repo) and deadbeef-git (from aur), but still useless, eh

oh my... I found it actually can play when I tested again to see the err output... sorry to bother you for my carelessness, and thank you very much:-)
and also, the only problem is it'll take 5s~30s before start playing after click, which made me thought it couldn't work for a year or two... I should say it's much slower than rar reader(see deadbeef archive reader i packaged in aur, you can try it:-D)
I doubt if it's abnormal, so would you mind sharing with me that how's it going on on your computer? thanks in advanced:-)

  • [SOLVED] KDE Start New Session doesn't work from lock screen

On my laptop, if I lock the KDE 4 session and then click Switch Users > Start New Session, I get a login screen and can log in as a different user. All good.
If I do the same thing on my desktop, it doesn't work. When I click Switch Users > Start New Session, it doesn't start a new session or switch VTs. Instead, I just get reprompted for the existing user's password.
Both machines are running fully updated Arch. Anyone know how I can troubleshoot this? The only difference I can think of between the laptop and desktop is that the desktop has nomodeset specified as a kernel boot parameter. (It won't boot without it.) Could this be interfering with automatic VT switching? Manual VT switching (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1) works fine.

  • File.delete() and File.deleteOnExit() doesn't work consistently..

I am seeing some odd behavior with trying to delete files that were opened. Usually just doing new File("file.txt").delete() would work. However, in this case, I have created an input stream to the file, read it in, saved it to another location (copied it), and now I am trying to delete it.
The odd thing is, in my simple application, the user can work with one file at a time, but I move "processed" files to a lower pane in a swing app. When they exit it, it then archives all the files in that lower pane. Usually every file but the last one opened deletes. However, I have seen odd behavior where by some files don't delete, sometimes all of them wont delete. I tried the deleteOnExit() call which to me should be done by the JVM after it has released all objects such that they don't matter and the JVM ignores any object refs and directly makes a call (through JNI perhaps) to the underlying OS to delete the file. This doesn't work either.
I am at a loss as to why sometimes some files delete, and other times they don't. In my processing code, I always close the input stream and set its variable to null. So I am not sure how it is possible a reference could still be held to the object representing the file on disk.

  • Browser "flip" from portrait to landscape doesn't work consistently

Hi, I just had to have my iphone replaced at the apple store because of a major dead spot in the touch screen. The second one now has a totally different problem. The feature that allows the orientation of the browser to "flip" between portrait and landscape (depending on the orientation of the phone) doesn't work most of the time. It will flip to landscape, but not go back. Sometimes it will flip opposite to the way I turned it, which means flipping the phone over. Now, it works, but only in one direction and won't flip back unless I hold it still for a few seconds.
    Anyone else experience this?

you might want to try re-setting the phone. Hold the on/off switch and the center button down together until the screen goes black and the apple logo appears, then let go.
If it doesn't work, try troubleshooting for the "accelerometer" (thats the mechanism that allows the phone to switch to landscape view mode...

  • MacBook Pro doesn't boot (Kernel Panic), even CD/DVD doesn't work anymore

It is a very long story how I came to the point I am at right now, so I'll try to keep it really short:
My MPR stops booting and shows that Kernel Panic message (30s after starting the boot procedure with the grey screen and Apple logo), telling me to reboot. It even does not boot from CD/DVD anymore. Zapping PRAM doesn't help. Booting into Safe Mode doesnt work. Booting into Single User Mode and repairing the drive (/sbin/fsck -fy) did help a couple of times; scanning the system with Onyx and removing faulty preferences even helped a lot as well, everything seemed to work fine. But after the next system crash (happened during memtest procedure), I had the same problem again, this time even Single User Mode doesnt help. Booting from external FW-drive doesnt work. Every time: Kernel Panic.
Since I put in 4GB RAM four weeks ago (without any problems until last week), I replaced the new RAM with the old RAM. Still: Kernel Panic.
How I ran into the whole trouble? I replaced the original internal drive with a new 500GB WD drive. Now problems, until I accidently wiped the whole drive with BootCamp assistant.
At some point, I managed to boot from CD/DVD and (deep-)clean / format the whole internal disk, reinstalled 10.5.4, imported the settings and software from my old internal disk, and maybe f*ed everything up again by doing so. ONYX helped me to isolate a couple of preferences that went bad after that import, and after deleting them, everything seemed to be alright, especially after updating to 10.5.6. Until the system crashed next time, during a memtest. Memory seems to be ok though; as I already said, swapping it against the old RAM doesnt change anything, and TechTool didnt find anything. HD seems to be ok as well, neither Disk Utility nor ONYX nor TechTool did find any hardware fault.
After every crash so far, pcscd.pub was corrupted, with 17 instead of 16 blocks (Single User Mode fsck -fy fixed that), which is more than strange since I don't use any smart card stuff which that file is used for.
Now, even fixing that file doesnt help anymore.
Verbose mode shows that the boot process stops right after
Feb 15 18:00:43 localhost /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOs/loginwindow[57]: Login Window Application Started -- Threaded auth
    Feb 15 18:0046 localhost mDNSResponder-176.3 (Sep 30 2008 16:59:38)[56]: starting
    AirPort: Link Down on en1
It could be interesting to put back in the old internal drive, but I'd like to avoid that at almost any cost since putting back the cases lid was such a p. i. t. a. It doesnt seem to be necessary as the drive itself seems to be ok technically.
The thing that amazes me most is the fact that I can't boot neither from CD/DVD nor from external FW-drive(s) anymore.
Now I'm sitting here with a beautiful 2,5k$ brick and I'm wondering if anybody has a clue what I could do or who to ask (Apple Care won't be available before tomorrow). Thanks a lot in advance!

Alright, "Signal 4" means "illegal instruction", as "info signal" shows.
Rebooting in Single User Mode and doing another fsck -fy shows that everything is as before: a damaged pcscd.pub (incorrect block count) and a "succesful repair" with "FILESYSTEM MODIFIED". Exiting Single User Mode and continuing boot up works this time . Very strange. Verifying the volume using Disk Utility: everything is ok; some of the rights were corrupted though (in detail:
but repaired without problems. BTW, "Die Zugriffsrechte unterscheiden sich für..." means "Access rights differ...", "Soll-Wert" means "reference value", "Ist-Wert" means "actual value".
Testing CPU, RAM, video RAM and USB using TechTool Deluxe: everything is ok.

  • DVD doesn't works in a dvd player

    Hello
I have make dual layer dvd using DVD STUDIO PRO 4. in my MAC PRO is works very nice but when i try to see the movie in a DVD PLAYER doesn't (error display the player).
But if i make the same project in IDVD works in my MAC PRO and a DVD PLAYER.
    What should be?
    i do this:
1-In FCP i export to Quick time self container
2-In Compressor i used setting: DVD best Quality 120 minutes, Dolby Digital Professional 2.0, MPEG-2 5.0 Mbps 2-pass
3-In DVD STUDIO PRO 4: Import assets and etc so burn
Everything works nice . i insert the dvd in my mac pro and it works nice but in a dvd player doesn't works

You may have made a HD DVD, which will not play on styandard DVD Players.
To see if the DVD you burned is HD or not is to look at what is on it in the Finder - if there is something else other than a AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS and possibly a Data folder, you made a HD DVD. If you see a HDDVD_TS folder it means that your project was set up for HD and not SD - in DVD SP prefs you can set default project - SD or HD. I leave as default as SD. If you switch a project from SD to HD (or created a HD Project) you cannot switch back.
    Check that first.

  • Snow leopard dvd doesn't work

I bought snow leopard DVD but it seems corrupted. I put inside the Mac and it spit it out immediately. (I tried both sides ... :-) ... many times).
Other CDs and DVDs works fine.
My question is: since I have an original version and a serial number printed somewhere (I hope) on the Disk or on the package, is there a place where download the Mac OS Snow Leopard from?
    I have Mac OS X 10.5.8
3.06 Ghz Intel Core Duo processor
    2 GB 800 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM

No, you can't download Snow Leopard.  You'll need to contact Apple and they will replace the disk.

  • Lenovo G570 - I delete my recovery partition, recovery DVD doesn't work.

    Hi!
First of all - sorry for my english.
I have problem with my Lenovo G570.
I make a backup DVD with system by OKR (4DVD). Then by accident i DELETED my recovery partition. When i try to boot from these DVD i get error: "The program cannot restore the system partition because its structure is incorrect ,you may have to recreate the partition to continue".
    My partitions looks like this:
C: New installation of Windows 7 enterprise trial
D: Lenovo (default partition with drivers and backup)
Hidden empty partition where recovery was.
    What should i do now?

one key recover won't work when you delete the hidden partition. there is only one way to fix this issue that is shipping back to service to reset the hdd its default ( lenovo may charge you )
