[Solved] AwesomeWM Java menus don't stay open

Hello,
I'm currently running awesome-git, and having trouble with Java Swing applications. The application I am attempting to use is called Freemind. When I attempt to open a menu, combobox, etc using a mouse click, the dialog immediately disappears. Using the keyboard shortcuts (e.g. alt + f) to open the menu, however, seems to work okay.
I found a lot of information about solving various Awesome/Java issues and tried out several different fixes including disguising the window manager name, but so far none have worked. I also tested Freemind in Gnome Shell to make sure it wasn't an application issue and there were no problems there.
System info:
Awesome 3.5 (2012-12-31, AUR: awesome-git)
Freemind 1.0.0 (beta 9, AUR: freemind-unstable )
java version "1.7.0_09"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.3.3) (ArchLinux build 7.u9_2.3.3-1-x86_64)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.2-b09, mixed mode)
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Keith

Hi tdy,
Including it at the end of rc.lua works!
So for not explaining things better before (It's been a couple weeks since I tried fixing this). I believe the approaches I tried were:
1) the "old" fix (AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit freemind-unstable)
2) and also calling "wmname LG3D" before running freemind -- I checked to make sure the setting took effect (calling wmname without any arguments) and since it returned "LG3D", I assumed that calling it in rc.lua or .xinitrc would not have worked any better. I was wrong
Thanks for the help!

  • Office 365: dropdown menus don't stay open + theme problem

    Hello
I recently encountered some problems that make the Office 365 unusable. Could you help me figure it out?
    Problems:
These problems appear in every office program: word, excel, power point...
Windows are in some very old 98 looking theme
Office programs appear to be in a window within a window (Image 2)
Dropdown menus in ribbon and in settings stay open less than a second - makes them unusable
    Situation:
Office worked well for 2 months, then problems started
Graphic drivers are up to date
    Windows is up to date
All the other programs work normally
    No recent hardware changes
    Comodo Internet Security installed recently
Automatic updates enabled for pretty much everything
When reinstalling, even the installation windows goes to 98 theme
    My actions:
Selected default theme from control panel, no effect
    Restarted, no effect
Reinstalled Office (Image 1), no effect
Disabled Comodo Internet Security, no effect
Tried running in safe mode, no effect
    My setup:
    Acer R7-572
    Windows 8.1 Pro N
    Office 365
I would post some screenshots, but seems that it is not allowed for me.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
Seems you've already tried lots of steps, including a complete reinstallation of Office, but to no avail. As per your description above, I'm thinking it might be something on Windows side that is interfering with Office product.
Have you ever tried to disable the hardware graphics acceleration in Office? Sometimes a recent updated video driver might be incompatible with Office. Please have a try and see if it helps:
Open any Office 2013 component, for example Word 2013, then go to FILE>Options>Advanced
Tick the option of "Disable hardware graphics acceleration" under the section
    Display
If issue persists after the steps above, I would suggest we try to perform a clean boot in Windows and then verify result. This will help to determine whether any program conflict is causing the issue:

    Hope this helps.

  • Saving window don't stay opened

Since I updated all the drivers on my laptop, the saving window where I am supposed to choose the format (jpg, gif, etc.) of copies of my file don't stay opened long enough for me to save in another format than PS. How to fix it?

The OS save dialog (the one you can't keep open) should only close when you hit the save button, or press enter or return to commit the save).
My guess is that something on your OS is interferring with the OS save dialog.

  • Menus Won't Stay Open

After inserting a SWF file (Insert --> Animation), my menu
bar menus will not stay open when I click on them. There's no
problem when I insert a text animation, or a caption box, just when
I insert a SWF file as an animation. If I close and re-open
Captivate, everything works correctly (until the next time I insert
    a SWF file).
I am running Captivate 2.0, and have been since early
December. This problem just started yesterday. I uninstalled and
    reinstalled Captivate, no change.

    Hi TrioRocks.com
This is happening because you have version 9 of the Flash
player. It's a known issue and hopefully a future version of
    Captivate will resolve it.
For now, fortunately there is a relatively painless
workaround. Simply click an object in the library. Doesn't seem to
matter which object. Just as long as something in the Library panel
gets momentary focus. Once you do this, things should begin working
    again.

  • Serious problems in Illustrator CC with OSX Mavericks: Open, Place and Save windows don't stay open

I just upgraded to OSX Mavericks. After that, Illustrator started acting up. When I try to save or open a file, or place an image, the command window opens just for a second or two then closes right away. Even the Save shortcut doesn't work. I've saved the file a few times using Command-S, when I was closing it I got a warning that I had to save it. Of course, I couldn't save it using Save As or Save commands because their windows wouldn't stay open, so I had to just close it. When I opened it again, it was an older version; Illustrator just ignored my last two or three saves.
I tried restarting the computer and relaunching Illustrator, nothing worked. The problem was worse when I have InDesign open too. But just quitting InDesign didn’t always work. This morning, I had to quit and relaunch both InDesign and Illustrator a few times before the problem temporarily disappeared.
I think it might also be worth mentioning that I use Apple Trackpad, and my computer is brand new.
Is anyone else having similar problems? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks. But I always have the List View.
One lame thing worked though. I would hit the command short cut and keep hitting it for a few times. This forces the command window to stay open, and it actually helps getting ridding of the problem temporarily.
I also had a similar but nastier problem in Acrobat. I tried to save a Photoshop PDF file in Acrobat, the Save As window opened and closed right away. Then all the command menus went gray; non of the commands was available including Quit. The only option I had was to force quit Acrobat. However, I didn't have this problem when handling native Acrobat files. The good news is that my lame solution worked.

This is not a common problem and probably not related to the JRE directly. You have something installed on your system that is doing this. I hope for you it is some sort of trigger happy protection software which you can control yourself, but I would consider doing a full spyware, malware and virusscan sweep using a respectable piece of scanning software.
If you want to believe it is related to Java, then completely uninstall your JRE/JDK, do a ccleaner registry cleanup and then reinstall the JRE/JDK. If the problem persists, it really is not the JRE.

  • Stop bookmark menus from staying open after I move my mouse

I just updated to FF 6.0. My bookmarks menu has multiple folders containing additional bookmarks. When I open one of the bookmarks folders (sub-menus) the sub-menu stays open after I move my mouse. In the old version the menu closed when I moved my mouse. This is a problem because when it is open it obscures the menu below. This means that I have to close everything each time I want to move to a different folder. It also means that I MUST make a direct hit on the folder I want to open - pain in the 'you-know-what'.
I can't find anyway to turn this feature off - and if I can't I will have to uninstall this version.

Currently 664 [exported from FFox Bookmarks to URL Manager for the count] abut never more than 4000: beyond 4000 bookmarks and FFoxs' Bookmarks respond slowly even without Sync active. I currently have 5 computer with FFox set up to use Sync. While I don't expect FFox to manage a huge collection of URLs, I would be nice to be able to access a Bookmark collection of 6000 to 8000 without noticeable delay. It's a simple text file after all, and as I'm only effecting one URL, why so long to update?
fyi: URL Manager tells me that I've amassed about 300,000 bookmarks, some from the late 90's which I still use for research.

  • Why does the print cue window stay open even after job is done?

In Tiger, and every other version of OSX I have any recollection of using, the printer window opens to display what's in the cue when you select to print something. Once printing is done, this cue closes. Since installing Leopard, everytime we print from our iMac, MacBook or MBP, the print cue window stays open indefinitely after the job is done, requiring a manual closing of the window. I can't for the life of me fathom what benefit this brings or who would want this. Is this part of Leopard or a problem with our install? Something I can turn off?

If you control-click (or right click) on the open printer queue in the Dock you can choose to have it auto close once the spool file is sent.
As to why this is necessary in Leopard, well I haven't seen a good enough answer to date...

  • CD Door stays open/Discs don't mount

    Hi all-
Not sure if I need to replace my CDRW burner. When I put a disc in the tray, the tray closes for a couple of minutes, then reopens. Any disc I mount doesn't appear on the desktop.
In iTunes, it searches for recordable media, but fails.
Just before this happened, I had dragged a playlist from iTunes 6.05 into the Toast 5.2.1 window to see if I could burn a CD this way, so I am wondering if this is the problem somehow.
    Remedies I have tried-
    1. Boot into safe mode
    2. Zapping PRAM (4 times)
3.Restarting in firmware window (Apple-Opt-O-F) to reset nvram, defaults & all.
    4. Apple service call-they took me through steps 1 & 2
If I need to replace this burner internally (which I prefer to do) can anyone recommend which model and where I can get instructions. I'll need to install Tiger after this also, and I already had the CD version (5 discs) ready to go.
I don't need DVD capability, I just need to burn music and picture discs. I hope there is an inexpensive fix.
The unit shows up in Sys prefs. It's a Sony CRX155E, ATA device type atapi, disc burning fully supported.
Can anyone tell me how to keep the door closed? It just stays open now.
    Thanks-
    Ray

    Hi
if you do need to replace it, installation instructions including a QuickTime movie can be found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75314
Removing the old burner just involves undoing 4 screws to remove the drive carrier from the computer and a further 4 screws to remove the drive from the carrier. You also just need to unplug the ribbon and power cable, the power cable can be a tight fit so you may need to gently waggle it or pry it off (but don't pull directly on the cable).
The Pioneer DVR-111D is a popular choice. It does burn DVDs as well as CDs but isn't too expensive ($30-$40). Under Tiger it should just work as is, no additional software needed. I recently installed one and haven't had any problems with it.
    I hope this helps.

  • First time client opens java needs admin rights to download, any way to push java runtime from ARD and open so they don't have to have admin credentials?

    Hey guys,
I am the IT admin for Macs in our company. When we put a brand new image on a client machine, it works perfectly. I can install and run packages using ARD. For Java however, when a client opens something required by java it says it needs to download the java runtime etc etc... It requires admin rights to download and install. My Users do not have admin privileges to install things.
Does Apple have the packages they install the javaruntime with on the internet to download as a .pkg or something similar? I was not able to find one that I could use and push through Apple Remote Desktop. Any suggestions?
Basically I need a way to have javaruntime on a machine without me needing to log into each computer individually to download it or needing to give admin rights to the users.
    Thanks!

Nevermind; I found a standalone installed located at:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1421
I install this through ARD before running any update features or anything so the end-user will not have to type in admin credentials since I can do this from my side of things now.

  • Make terminator stay open after command completion? [SOLVED]

I'd like to execute a command into terminator from my Openbox menu and have it stay open after the command completes.
I know urxvt does this with a "-hold" option but I'd like to just use one terminal instead of two or more for different things.

I also found on the crunchbag forums that you can use a --profile flag (not mentioned in the terminator man page </sigh>)
terminator --profile stayopen --geometry 990x500+0+20 --command '{my command}'

Did you check if maybe the port OC4J runs on (8889) is already used by another program (netstat)? Did you check the logfiles?
