[SOLVED] Booting Windows from a desktop shortcut

I'm looking for a script or method that changes the default menu entry for the bootloader and reboots the system, but when I reboot (or shutdown) from Windows, Arch Linux becomes the default entry.
Maybe what I'm looking for is a way to save the previous selection as the default. Is this possible?

Ah, now I remember. GRUB Legacy. It's been so long since I last used it... About 3 years I think. It was great. It did what it was meant to do, and did it well. I use Syslinux now.
Here's something interesting:
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Doc/extlinux
5. EXTLINUX now has "boot-once" support. The boot-once information is stored in an on-disk datastructure, part of extlinux.sys, called the "Auxillary Data Vector". The Auxilliary Data Vector is also available to COMBOOT/COM32 modules that want to store small amounts of information.
To set the boot-once information, do:
extlinux --once 'command' /boot/extlinux
where 'command' is any command you could enter at the SYSLINUX command line. It will be executed on the next boot and then erased.
I should probably reboot, press Tab at the "Windows XP" entry and jot it down on a piece of paper or something (on my phone, most likely).

  • Dual boot Windows from Toshiba Recovery CD

Is it possible to dual boot Windows from a Toshiba Recovery CD?
I have a Satellite A45-S120 with a Toshiba Windows XP Recovery CD.
I have XP installed on one partition.  I partitioned the hard drive using GParted, and installed Linux on several partitions.  I want to install XP on a 2nd partition, so I can dual boot 2 versions of Windows from the same hard drive.
When I go to install Windows, the Toshiba Recovery CD says the entire hard drive will be deleted.  Is this the case, or will it only reformat a partition?  I went into GParted and was able to change the first Windows XP ntfs partition to hidden, and now successfully can not boot Windows from the Grub Boot Manager.  However, I worry that if GParted can see the partition, then the Toshiba Recovery CD might be able to.  In addition, the Linux ext partitions could not be set to hidden.  Will the Toshiba Recovery CD overwrite all the partitions, or can it maybe only install itself on the one ntfs partition available?
I read at http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/193560-install-xp-toshiba-recovery-disk-d.html that there may be a way possible, any advice?
    Specs are:
    1.26 Ghz Celeron
    1.256 GB Ram
    40 GB HD

    Satellite A45-S120
I want to install XP on a 2nd partition,
So far as I know, that recovery disc will install nothing. It will restore the entire hard drive (master boot record and all) by writing all the bytes that were on the original drive (byte-by-byte).

  • Boot Windows from VHD

    Hey.
I have to work with Windows Server 2012 for a university project but my laptop doesn't have Intel VT-x. I know that it's possible to boot Windows from a VHD file, in Windows I just need to add the file.vhd to MBR.
Can I boot a VHD file with Windows on it from syslinux? If yes how I install Windows on the file using Linux?
    Thanks in advance,
    Hugo Rodrigues.

GloW_on_dub wrote:Not sure to understand, why not use virtualbox ?
Because my laptop doesn't support Intel VT-x and Windows Server 2012 it's only available in x86_64 and I only can virtualize x86 systems
    ayekat wrote:
It's very unlikely that you can simply boot directly from a VHD file without some sort of hypervisor (since there is a non-negligible amount of virtualisation going on here).
According to this, you are not really "adding the file to the MBR", but rather adding an entry to the Windows-bootloader to take the file into account. I suppose that behind the scenes it's loading some kind of Microsoft Virtual blabla to launch the system that's on the VHD.
This was just to clarify; I cannot tell you whether it is possible from syslinux or GRUB, but it will probably invole a lot of hacking, since you need to load some hypervisor like VirtualBox, VMWare or at least qemu/KVM.
I know it's possible to do it with a VHD with a Linux OS. Look up in here

Is anyone else having problems starting iTunes in Windows Vista Home Premium?
I have to attempt several times to get iTunes to start - using the Desktop shortcut, the listing in the start list and even the listing in the 'All Programs' list.
Once again I am compelled/induced to make a complaint about the effectiveness of iTunes 'Support' ... but I could be just a little redundant - after all how can one complain about something that does not exist???

    please, help me..

  • [SOLVED] Booting windows 7 kills Arch

    Hi,
I'm dual booting Arch with windows 7 and recently when I boot windows 7, I can't boot Arch afterwards.
After I shutdown windows, I start up my laptop again, I get the grub menu and select Arch. During boot I get a lot of output during the file system check ( I think, it's hard to see because it goes to fast; ) and then Arch freezes. The only thing that I can do is a force shut down with the power button. I boot again and launch the Arch Fallback kernel. That one is then able to boot but freezes when kdm is launched: I get the login screen for tty 1 but when the graphical login managers fires up I only get a black screen and everything freezes ( can't switch to a terminal or use ctrl+alt+backspace ). I have to force shutdown with the power button again. I boot up again, select the Fallback kernel again and everything works fine. After that I can boot with the normal Arch kernel without a problem.
Is there a way to log the output on the screen during boot up ? I've searched the logs in /var/log/ but can't find that output.
This only happens since yesterday. I was looking for CPU scaling modules and loaded the powernow-k8 module according to the wiki. The power manager of KDE needed additional modules, KDE loaded the modules itself and I put all the modules in /etc/rc.conf. Strange thing is that I also lost my wifi yesterday and it still doesn't work, not on Arch nor Windows ( Wired internet does work on both ).
While checking the the daemon.log I found this, don't know if it's really helpfull:

I had windows vista and windows 7 in dual boot with Mandriva linux for a year without any problem and right now I have absolutely no idea what's going on.
    EDIT:
Tried it again to see if I could get some more information.
Apparently the first time I boot Arch after a windows boot, it doesn't really freeze. I tried to write down some of the output and after a while it continued for a second and stopped again and this went going on and on. It seems like it keeps looping the same output. I waited some more but I had to force shut down because my laptop was going nuts and overheating, it started to smell like burned electronics...
I was able to capture some of the output:
    --[end trace 27ebd855... ]---
    Call trace
    [<ffffffff8117c420>] ? proc_lookup_de+0x20/0x100
    [<ffffffff81009ec2>] ? system_call_fastpath
Code ff .. .. .. and a lot more of pairs of letters and numbers
The output at the beginning was to fast to see but the Call trace and Code kept on repeating.
After this I could boot up the Fallback kernel without a problem, kdm worked fine to, then rebooted using the normal kernel image like nothing happened before.
    Any help would be appreciated,

Well since it worked fine first it could only be the powernow-k8 module or the CPU scaling modules required by KDE. I'll check it out and report back.
    EDIT:
Narrowed it down to the cpufreq_powersave and cpufreq_userspace modules. Powernow-k8, cpufreq_stats and cpufreq_ondemand work fine.
I disabled all the modules and then turned them back on one by one in rc.conf ( booting w7 everytime ). cpufreq_powersave turned on gave the strange output during boot but only a short version but completely ran down X or kdm after boot. With cpufreq_userspace I could boot but KDE froze right after login. Combination of the two modules resulted in being unable to boot.
Loading the modules after boot while running KDE gives no problem and since I'm a laptop user I could use the powersave module. I'll see if I can make KDE load that module automatically after login.
Thanks a lot for the tip !

  • Dual boot windows from USB via grub?

    HI all:
I recently had a motherboard failure on an existing PC on which I dual-booted Windows XP and Gentoo.  I replaced that box with a new HP PC preloaded with Vista.  Wiped that immediately, and installed ARCH.  But, I would like to also boot XP, and, since my old hard drive is still OK (I have it in an external USB adapter), I was thinking that I might configure grub to point at an external USB drive like this:
    # Windows XP
    title Windows XP
    root (hd1,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
where "hd1" (I hope) would point at my old drive, now connected via USB.  In this way, I am really booting from my HDD (where grub lives), but "chain loading" from my USB external.  Can this work??
    -dvh

    dvh wrote:
I configured as shown in the wiki, but when I try to boot XP, I get a message that says something to the effect of "missing or corrupted <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe".  I checked the disk and it seems to be there and OK.  I get the feeling that it is either NOT finding the hard disk (or partition) or it cannot interpret the NTFS file system (but grub was able to boot this before,...).  So, two questions...
    1) how do I know what the designator for the external USB hard disk will be?  I have speculated that grub will find it at "hd1", but maybe not?
    2) does the target disk NEED a windows boot loader?  as I said earlier, I used to dual boot it, so there is a grub loader on that disk also.
    ...ok, three questions...
    3) anything else that I should consider??
    Thanks again for any help.
    -dvh
    1) i don'tknow a way to check this, but the
missing or corrupted <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe message comes from the windows boot process,
so it seems grub is configured correctly.
The main problem is that BOTH grub and windows boot need to have the correct settings.
Windows takes the settings for boot from the boot.ini file in the root of C:\ , and that probably needs to be changed.
You will need some way to get read/write access to the windows C-drive partition.
Install ntfs-3g in archlinux (see NTFS_Write_Support ) and post the contents of boot.ini .

  • [SOLVED] Boot Windows 7 without the BOOTMGR parition

    Hi guys.
I installed Arch nearby Windows 7, and I deleted the Windows 7 BOOTMGR parition. Do you know a way to make Grub to start Windows 7 without its own boot partition? I can't believe it's not possible ;(
Last edited by Aegidius (2015-04-07 08:54:00)

The "System Reserved" partition contains the files required to boot windows + winre.wim which contains the startup "repair" options. If you deleted the files without moving them to your main windows partition and correcting the windows BCD store (AFAIK) you will have to reinstall with a pre-created partition for windows so it does not additionally create the "Boot" partition. Windows will subsequently be picked up by grub via os_prober.
It may be possible to fix Windows from a Install DVD but I have never needed to recover from this situation and I'm sure you can Google it yourself. Blindly deleting system partitions, in any OS, frequently ends badly...

  • Since updating to Firefox 4.0 I'm getting a popup when I try to access a URL from a desktop shortcut. Target shortcuts work fine.

If the properties dialog points to a URL then I get a windows popup that states "Windows can not find "http:/www.chieftalk.com". This is typical for any shortcut that contains just a URL. I'm using Windows Vista.
These shortcuts worked properly before upgrading to version 4.0
By copying a shortcut that has a Target Application and modifying it to point to the App & URL the problem is avoided. ie:
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" http://www.chieftalk.com/

Try to redo the default browser and make another browser like IE the default browser and then let Firefox do it again.

I am also running a IDE drive on the primary IDE channel set as slave.
I went to the bios and changed the boot order to use the SCSI HD as the first boot device and proceed to intall windows XP. I pressed F6 to install the SCSI drivers and everything went fine until the reboot after all the files has been copied. I would get an error message saying something like:
"NTLDR cannot find boot drive etc"
I have no idea what to do...i tried everything and i am 100% sure that its not my SCSI HD or SCSI card.
    PLZZZZ HELP ME!!!!!!! PLZZZ HELP!!!!!

Found it set your boot order to bootable add in card first in the screen shown here courtesy of HardOCP : http://www.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTA4MjM1MDg3NWxrOFNyWHJRcTNfMl8yNl9sLmdpZg==
    That should do ya.
Also be sure that the LSI controller is configured to use the Seagate drive to boot from. There is usually an option of which channel to boot from in the HBA BIOS.

Not sure it is a good idea to be editing VISA resources while the VI is running.  I'm not even sure it's "legal" which might explain why it isn't there.  If all you want to to is be able to change which equipment to talk to, maybe it's best to just to have a VISA resource control and have the user select from there, or maybe a ring control with pre-defined VISA resources.

    - SSD - kernel, home, and stuff
    - HDD - stuff (and some bindings)
I got it working, but if I remove the HDD, I can't boot. I get the message "no drives detected" (or something like that)
So I'd like to boot from the SSD only.
Both drives are GPT, ext4 partitions (no swap), see:

Any hints on what I can do to fix that?
Also, afaik I'm not using UEFI, i'll upload a pic of the bios in a minute.
    EDIT:

    Thank you all.
    Cheers.
    EDIT-SOLUTION:
This is a Pavilion Ultrabook 14-b006sa
2 hard drives (ssd and hdd), they're united if they are under secure boot (if i'm not mistaken), but it CAN run only on SSD. It was a tricky thing, but got it working with Gummiboot, EFI. the partitionning scheme was not the best one for grub, so I settled with a 512 MiB space for FAT32, and do the thing.

It's simply that the bios (computer) itself doesn't see the SSD drive alone. If the other HDD is present, no problems.
You're saying the SSD doesn't show up at all if the HDD isn't present? Are you sure about this? It's not a matter of having installed your bootloader on the HDD or something?
I have grub installed on the SSD. And yes, I just removed the HDD again, went into the boot menu, and I only had "boot from EFI file" and the live usb i inserted.

Maybe a stupid question but are you sure that you don't have a hybrid drive (SSD + HDD) and thus when you disconnect the HDD you actually also disconnected the SSD?
I'm going of the fact that you seem to be using a laptop and to me it makes sense that laptops would be using a hybrid drive to preserve space.
Anyway in case I'm wrong. You should post the output that ANOKNUSA asked for.
I just re-checked, it's "boot device not found, please install an operating system on your hard disk. gard disk <3F0>
The SSD isn't being detected, so it might be a hybrid thing... Or maybe it's just a wrong partitioning for grub.

I am thinking that this is an mSATA SSD that the windows environment would have used as a cache for the HDD.  If that is the case, there may be no way around it.  I too have one of these mSATA slots, though I have never tried to boot with that as the only thing in the machine.
I think this may just be in the firmware design.
Edit: On second thought... if you aren't using that ~30GB ESP to boot the machine, are you sure that grub is actually installed to the SSD?  If it is, then the machine should at least be able to get to the grub prompt I would think.  Even then though, you still don't have anything on the SSD to get yourself any further, so I'm not entirely sure what the point of this excercise is.
When I got this laptop, it merged both HDD's into RAID.
It is installed on the SSD, I just re-checked from a live environment, mounted it, and /boot is there.
I'm quite sure there is a problem with the grub-mbr-gpt setup....
What info would be relevant to post?

  • KDE4.1 Do Not Show Windows From All Desktops

So how do I make my KDE4.1 desktop show windows on their own desktop and hide the buttons in the taskbar when I'm on a different desktop? This could be done in KDE 3 I remember.

It's always right under your nose, isn't it...
    Thanks for the help bro!

  • Booting Windows from external drive

Hi all. I recently got an external Firewire 400 drive for backups, and it's just occurred to me that I could possibly run Windows off of it and reclaim some 60GB of internal hard drive space. I would like to know if this is possible. Yes, I know that Windows supposedly cannot boot from an external drive, but I have read reports of people booting it off of USB drives, and wonder if a similar tact can be tried for Firewire for greater I/O speed. I also know that OS X can be booted from Firewire, so it seems it should be possibly for Windows.
My guess as to how to do this would be to. . .
    - use dd to do a bit-by-bit copy of the Windows partition on my internal drive to a partition on the external drive
    - modify the boot.ini on the external so that it points to the correct location
    - modify a .cfg file to load Firewire drivers earlier in the boot process (?)
The first step is trivial, and the second will be easy since the Firewire drive will appear in the same place unless I have another external or CD attached. What I'm not sure how to go about doing is the third - which .cfg? I can probably figure out the drivers otherwise.
Finally: has anyone else done something like this? If so, links/hints? Thanks.

    i recommend looking into rEFIt:
I've looked at rEFIt before (because I really didn't want to go through all that hacking), but I think the problem still exists: Windows XP does not support EFI (and neither will Vista), so there's still the problem of USB/Firewire drivers loading at boot time. From
    http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-224050.html
some people got rEFIt on the external drive, and that helped to dual boot on that drive, but it still required hacking the Windows CD (it's the registry, that I think goes into the installation itself, that's hacked). It's a Window's problem.
you should be able to do this using esata external
drives with a esata express card for native speeds.
If the expresscard includes drivers that support booting, it may work (hence the mention of the Nitro AV card). I know that not all cards do, and I haven't heard anyone had success with it. But, it would be cool if someone decides to get such cards and try ; )

    Hi there:
You may be able to start up the Mac in such a way as to look
for an OS X volume at the same time using a keyboard comb-
ination at startup... Press key(s) immediately after start tone.
Press Option (opt) key during startup will start in Startup Manager
where you can select an OS X volume or network volume to run.
{There is also a way to choose a hardware test for diagnostic
purposes on startup, too. Some macs have features in the OS
    to include a 'recovery' mode on later models.}

PS: if you decide to remove Windows, you should also
consider Boot Camp to remove the partition it made.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!
