[SOLVED]Can't mount iPhone/Android devices.

Hi,
Since some update (can't tell exact update) I am unable to mount mobile devices on iOS or Android as a flash drive. It appears as "camera" in my "Available Devices" in KDE and when I try to open it with file manager, it appears blank.
In journalctl I can see the reason, but don't know how to fix it:

I've tried to mount iOS device with ifuse, but it didn't work either.
Any idea?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the answers.
ewaller wrote:That looks like it is trying to treat your iPhone as a network interface.  Have you turned on USB tethering on your phone?  What happens if you turn it off?
It's always like this, no matter if I turn on or off tethering.
mzneverdies, donniezazen,
Ok, this seems to work with android devices but not with iOS. Also when I run detect while my iPhone is plugged in, device list is empty:
$ mtp-detect
Unable to open ~/.mtpz-data for reading, MTPZ disabled.libmtp version: 1.1.6
Listing raw device(s)
No raw devices found.
Main goal is to return support of iOS.

Can I use My android device with itune if so how?

Not with a gift card for the iTunes Store, anyway. Apps from the iTunes Store are for Apple's devices only. If you have a gift card for Google's app store, that would be a different matter.

Computer can't find iphone.I can't even hear a device connecting sound.Cable is working.I can't find iphone on device manager and in control panel too

The phone is stuck in this mode because it needs to contact ATT's activation servers when you plug it into itunes. There is most likely a connection issue Firewall/Antivir software blocking certain connections/ports.
Common AV/Firewall programs that cause this issue: Norton, Mcafee, Zone Alarm, and CA (computer associates).
Unfortunately you cant fully "disable" these programs so its a matter of knowing how to configure them or remove them completely using their respective removal tools.
Otherwise, bring the phone to an Apple Retail Store or ATT store to have them activate it for you.
Hope that helps.

Hello archers
Ive recently changed my distro from lubuntu to Arch64. In the way i've read many articles about trying to solve your problems in the wiki and such, the thing is, i made it this far without human help (exept some small talk with a friend) and i have encountered a mayor problem wich i can't solve by my own, i've been walking arround in circles and can't manage to get it working properly

- access the CD/DVD/USB-PENDRIVE files only if i use "sudo pcmanfm" and enter password first

exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session
to my .xinitrc or to my slim.conf i get an error from SLiM that doesn't let me log in "slim failed to execute login command".
The only way that i can start openbox is by removing ck-launch-session of .xinitrc and/or slim.conf
i will post my confs in order to help others to understand what's happening what i don't for lack of experience and knowledge

• [Solved]Can't mount external hdd at boot!

Hi!
I'm trying to mount my new external hdd (Lacie USB2) at boot, but without success.
To avoid random device name (sdx, sdy), I would like to use UUID in my fstab file.
I've read this wiki.
I think my configuration is ok, but there's an error at boot saying "Device with UUID xxxxxxxx doesn't exist, can't mount it", or something like that.
Here are some commands:
[eko@nodrom ~]$ fdisk -l
Disque /dev/sdb: 500.1 Go, 500107862016 octets
255 têtes, 63 secteurs/piste, 60801 cylindres
Unités = cylindres de 16065 * 512 = 8225280 octets

/dev/sdb1   *           1       60801   488384001    c  W95 FAT32 (LBA)
[eko@nodrom ~]$ /bin/ls -lF /dev/disk/by-uuid/

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
But even with /dev/disk/by-uuid/6853-5BA9 in my fstab file, it fails to automount it.
It says "Special device with UUID=6853-5BA9 does not exist".
The weird thing is that I can mount it manually without problems.
(In fact, that's not true, I've the same problem than steven.  May it be a kernel-related problem?)
Or maybe there's a fault in the rest of my fstab line? (iocharset, guid, etc?)
In the case of a kernel related bug, how could I downgrade it?
I've tried with "pacman -U kernel26-2.6.21.6-1.pkg.tar.gz" in /var/cache/pacman/pkg but it broke my xorg server at reboot.

• How can I sync 2 Android devices if I do not have a computer to create a sync profile from?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab running Android 4.0.4 & a Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.1 and no desktop or laptop computer to create a sync profile on. How can I sync my Firefox browsers between these devices?

There isn't an official way to do this.
Here's a hack which could work but I've never tried it and it's difficult to do:
#Borrow a desktop or laptop with Firefox
#Create a new profile
#Set up a sync account
#Write down your username, password and recovery key <- super important. See, Where can I find my Recovery Key?
#Delete that profile you just created on the borrowed computer.
#On one of your Android devices, set up sync and tap the "Advanced Setup" link
#Enter your username, password and recovery key
#Repeat the last two steps on the other Android device.

• [SOLVED] Booting Arch off USB HDD fails - can't mount real root device

I've installed Arch on the internal HDD (sda) of my laptop, and I attempted to install a second copy of Arch on partition sdb3 of an external USB HDD.  sdb3 is a primary partition that I had prepared beforehand with gparted and outfitted with the reiserfs filesystem.  I skipped section 3.2 (manually prepare hard drives) of the Arch installer.  There was no problem with section 3.3 (manually configure filesystems and mountpoints); I put all of / in sdb3.  Installing packages and configuring the system also went without a hitch.
I wanted to boot this new install of Arch via the boot menu of GRUB that was installed in the MBR of sda with my primary install of Arch.  On the new install, I first did go through section 7 (install bootloader), thinking I would want to install GRUB in the root sector of partition sdb3 (not in the MBR of sdb where the GRUB of MintKDE resides, a boot menu that I want to keep) but that failed, so I then picked "no bootloader to be installed".  With that I exited the new install, since it appeared to have gone to completion.
I then copied the appropriate stanza in the /boot/grub/menu.lst of this new Arch install to the /boot/grub/menu.lst of my primary Arch install on the internal HDD of my laptop.
This stanza reads as follows:
# (3) Arch Linux on WDPP60 blue (sdb3)
title Arch Linux on WDPP60 blue (sdb3)
root (hd1,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/191cc027-43ce-443b-8846-f265d60555ec ro
initrd /boot/kernel26.img
However, I'm not able to boot the new Arch install when I pick this entry from the GRUB menu list.  The new install starts booting, finds sda but not sdb and stops with the following errors, dropping me to a recovery shell:
Root device /dev/disk/by-uuid... doesn't exist. Attempting to create it.
ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid...'
mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid... on /new_root failed: No such file ...
ERROR: Failed to mount the real root device.
Running "mount -t reiserfs /dev/sdb3 /new_root" at the ramfs prompt also fails.
I've tried a number of edits of the menu.lst stanza from the grub> command prompt, such as adding rootfstype=reiserfs, replacing root=/dev/disk/by-uuid..etc. with root=/dev/sdb3 (booting then fails with "/dev/sdb3  No such file"), using "initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img" etc., but booting always fails at the same stage with equivalent error messages.
I have no trouble booting half a dozen other Linux/BSD distros that reside on two different external USB HDD's by the same method, i.e. choosing an entry from the GRUB boot menu of my primary Arch install, after I placed the appropriate stanza in its /boot/grub/menu.lst.
How can I get this new Arch install to boot?

Yes, this was in fact the solution.  I stumbled upon it in this thread:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65844
When one wants to boot from a USB mass storage device, the initrd needs to include the modules for accessing USB devices, and in Arch this is accomplished by adding "usb" to the HOOKS array.  I simply reinstalled Arch to the USB HDD and in the system configuration step now edited /etc/mkinitcpio.conf by adding the "usb" item.  Adding "rootdelay=10" and/or "rootfstype=reiserfs" to the kernel line in the appropriate stanza in Arch's /boot/grub/menu.lst wasn't necessary in this case.  I left the stanza exactly as I posted it above.
Thanks for your input.

• [solved] Can't mount Samsung YP-U3 mp3 player

Hi all,
I have a Samsung YP-U3 mp3 player, which currently I can't use as it won't mount. I've spend a while trying to figure this out, so any help is appreciated!
EDIT: I don't wish to use Amarok etc. Also I've tried mtpfs, but it doesn't show any of the actual files. I'm trying go-mtpfs, but can't install it. I get the following response from yaourt:

Solved.
Firstly, I didn't have git installed. When I did, I could install go-mtpfs, which does a little better than mtpfs by the looks of things.

• Can I mount a firewire device in single user mode?

I've still got this idea I can rescue data from a hard drive that won't mount.
I put my external backup drive on another iMac to simulate what would happen. Briefly,
I plug in the drive, note the device name.
I reboot into single user mode.
The drive automatically powers off. Grrr.
I turn it back on again. It does not show up in /dev

How far did you go under "single user" mode? In "Tiger", running 'sh /etc/rc' (instructions to use this are included among the messages displayed starting up in single-user mode) starts up all sorts of things. Perhaps plugging in the drive after the script has run will have it show up in '/dev/' (I haven't tested this)...

• [SOLVED]Can't mount USB Flashdrive.

I cannot use my Flash Drive in Linux anymore. I've flashed Arch using Win32ImageWriter, installed it, but now, a few days after, I wanted to use it for something else, but it does not mount.
I've opened KDE Partition Manager, my Flash Drive shows up, but it reports a 2.74 PiB size, even though it's just 8 GB.
dmesg | tail  -n10 has the following output:
[ 2302.625827] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdc] Write Protect is off

[ 2302.640161] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk
Yeah, it does not report any partitions, even though I've formatted it in Windows like 10 times, tried to create a bootable GParted USB, copied a bunch of random files.
What can I do? All this happened after Win32ImageWriter, worked fine under Linux Distros before.
Help will be appreciated, Thanks.

I was banging head against this for a few days.  I tried all the udev rules out there.  Then realized they didn't apply if running as root. so I google my device id and saw a post about usb_modeswitch (http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/) I installed the package and problem is solved.
Hope this helps.

• ITunes 12 can't detect iPhone 5 device

I've been connecting to the iPhone fine for days but ever since the iTunes 12 cam out my Mac can't find my iPhone. It may not be able to find any other similar devices but all I have is an iPhone, no iPad or iPod or anything. The keyboard and mouse through another USB port work fine.
Yes I've tried turning both the MAC and the iPhone off and on again separately a couple of times. It's not asking me to verify "whether I trust it".
The only temporary fixes I've found involve reverting to iTunes 11. However, all the guides for this strongly recommend backing up first. I don't have a MAC formatted hard drive to back up to and so this would take a couple of days to do as I'd need to obtain one. No fix at the moment and it's just stopping me from doing any development because XCode also relies on iTunes for finding devices.
OSX 10.9.5
iPhone 5 MD298B/A
iOS 8.1 (12B411)
iTunes 12.0.1.26
Thanks in advance
Ben

If you are using Mac:
01- Quit iTunes 12 and unplug your iPhone.
02- Download iTunes 11 at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1774
03- Download Pacifist http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/6812/pacifist
04- Hold down ( Command + Shift + G ) and a screen will pop-up.
05- Key in this ( ~/Music/iTunes/ )
06- Find a folder called ( iTunes Media ) and move this folder into your Desktop. Do not delete this. This is your music library.
07- Launch your Pacifist app.
08- Open your downloaded iTunes 11 but don't install.
When you opened your downloaded iTunes 11 you should be able to see 2 files,
        ( Read before you install iTunes.app ) file and ( Install iTunes.pkg ) file.
09- Drag the ( Install iTunes.pkg ) file to Pacifist.
10- Now you need to uninstall your iTunes 12 by using sudo code.
Go to open your Terminal app.
               Type this: sudo killall iTunesHelper
Hit Enter/Return and ( if you have password it will ask you to key your password )
Type this: sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app
                     Hit Enter/Return
11- Now go back to your Pacifist screen.
Select this ( Contents of Install iTunes.pkg ) and then click ( Install ) on top of the Pacifist menu bar.
12- You should see a message pop up and asking you if you want to install with Admin's privilege? Click ( Yes ).
Another screen will ask you if you want to replace the files.... Select ( Yes ) to replace all the files.
13- Hold down ( Command + Shift + G ) and a screen will pop-up.
              Key in this ( ~/Music/iTunes )
                   Delete this file ( iTunes library.itl )
Now move back your folder ( iTunes Media ) that you moved to your desktop.
14- Close all the screens now.
15- Open your iTunes 11. It should be at your Applications.
16- Plug in your iPhone and your iPhone should be appearing on your iTunes 11.
17- If yes, do a back-up.
After finished back-up now check your iTunes for updates and you can go ahead to update your iTunes to iTunes 12 and
everything should work like normal again.
Please let me know if this help!
